South Dakota:The Exile -- Micheaux, 1931.
Part of this first African-American-produced talkie is set in South Dakota ranchland/farmland. The majority of the film was shot at studios in Fort Lee, New Jersey. There are shots of grassy farmland that couldn't possibly have been taken at the studio, though they may not even be stock footage of South Dakota, despite Micheaux having spent a number of years there. (I'll probably chance on a better match filmed in SD sooner or later, and then I may update this entry.) The film suffers from the same problems that a lot of early talkies have: line delivery better suited to a large theater than a camera, a fair amount of very stiff acting, and iffy sound quality. Still...interesting to see for its historical significance.
