120. Tajikistan - Luna Papa (1999) - something about the ton of the movie never perfectly fit for me, but some of the magical realism moments were fun - 6/10

121. Afghanistan - Osama (2003) - really dark reality - 6/10

122. Federated States of Micronesia - Papa Mau (2010) - solid little doc about a Hawaiian group learning traditional navigation from a Micronesian navigator so that they could sail traditionally from Hawaii to Tahiti. Good look into Micronesian culture as well - 6/10

123. Kyrgyzstan - The Light Thief (2010) - the visuals were great for this movie, the director clearly has a great eye for it, but story just needed more polish - 6/10

124. Christmas Island - Big Brother of Christmas Island (1999) - good doc about a man who lead a strong union on Christmas Island. Really a shame how the Australian government was treating those people before the union - 7/10

125. Liberia - Murder in the Cassava Patch (2012) - not too much to say, solid movie. After reading a synopsis of the book, it seems like they changed some of the story around - 6/10

126. Paraguay - Paraguayan Hammock (2006) - One of the movies made for Mozart’s 250th birthday. I’ve had a really good time with these Mozart movies, Daratt has been one of my favorites of the whole challenge and I enjoyed Opera Jawa as well. This one is really slow, and really wants you to feel how the characters feel while waiting for their son to come back from war. It does a great job of capturing a waiting feeling - 7/10

127. Hungary - Song of the Miraculous Hind (2002) - I love Marcell Jankovics, so I was excited for this movie. It tells the story of the Hungarian people through their legends. Animation style is normal for the people telling the stories, but Jankovics’ psychedelic style really comes through and shines when the legends are on screen. My only complaint is a personal one, just being unfamiliar with Hungary’s history it was hard to keep up with the movie as it talks about a ton of different tribes moving through the Eurasian steppe before settling in Pannonia - 7/10

A so-called film, actually a shaky 3.5 minute video apparently shot with a cell phone, at some kind of airport I believe.

Yeah, it’s someone’s tourist video, they got off of a cruise ship I think. Really doesn’t belong in IMDb at all. There just barely anything for Saint Kitts.

A feature length movie called A Rose Between Thorns has been screened, and according to the director, they are trying to find a streaming service for it. Hopefully it gets a place online soon.

Anyone can add something to IMBd, I’ve added some videos for a few countries that were in TMDB or on YouTube but not in IMDb. I’m not sure how diligent they are about making sure something belongs, which can be good or bad.

There are a few different tourist like videos for the countries with very few options. A Pitcairn documentary is just some polish college kids who really wanted to visit Pitcairn. Niue has a 14 minute long short about a college kid visiting the island of her ancestors and trying to reconnect.

The Saint Kitts one is just especially terrible.

018. Thailand

Tropical Malady (2004)
The first half follows two men who are in an increasingly-romantic friendship. While the second half is about a soldier stalked by a tiger spirit in the jungle. The tiger spirit is searching for affection as well as fresh meat, so its more of a complicated relationship between the hunted and hunter. But I can’t help but make the connection between the “predatory” nature of the two stories (as one of the two friends is rather innocent). That we’re supposed to equate the two stories and the role desire and advantage plays in both. It comes across more as homophobia than anything else. Despite that, I enjoyed the slow pace of the film and the way it interweaves religion and mythos into the story. It made me bemoan the lack of monsters and wandering spirits in Western culture. Why can’t we have these stories about our forests and wildlands? There should be more unknowns and mysteries in everyday life. For a world without monsters is one without charm.



Tears of the Black Tiger (2000)
This is another disjointed film, with some serious tone issues. Its at times a fun and exaggerated Western, with blood geysers and plenty of humor. Then it will switch to a super stock melodrama. I’m not sure if the melodrama is intended to be played for laughs, but it certainly didn’t come across that way. Its just odd to have a marriage sequence that’s part love triangle, and part rocket launchers impaling people against walls. Or have Thai men doing John Wayne impressions in front of a painted sunset, while playing the harmonica in remembrance of their forbidden love. I’m just not entirely sure what to make of this film – and what Thai audiences were expecting from it.



Magic Lizard (1985)
This is one of those “guy in lizard costume gets chased for 100 minutes” sort of movies. Of course this was aimed at really little Thai kids in the 80s and I have to imagine its revered as a Thai Goonies. You know you’re off to quite the cinematic experience when it opens with Magic Lizard rollerskating down a freeway alongside a bunch of kids in lizard masks. The copy we watched wasn’t subtitled + we weren’t sober, so there are some gaps in our understanding. Aliens steal a jewel and then disappear completely until the last 30 seconds. Or characters just show up and steal the focus for 20 minutes only to disappear again. There’s just so much of this film where its like “well, I guess we’re doing this now for awhile.” The chief rival is a crocodile which is equal parts terrifying (going after people who fall in the water) but its also super goofy looking. Other cinematic experiences to marvel at: Magic lizard riding a bull to Morricone music (said bull then shits on Magic Lizard’s face in gruesome detail); two random doofuses in a cave where everything’s alive (including an amorous skeleton + a fire breathing golden cow); and a big chase sequence on the actual Bridge on the River Kwai. Magic Lizard can best be described with a: “WTF did we just watch?” I’ve no idea whether this was amazing or terrible, but I think it just needs to be experienced for yourself.



Emmanuelle (1974)
Based on a popular erotic book of the same name (written by Emmanuelle), this softcore porn set in Thailand played into the adult film craze of the early 70s. Its essentially a string of sex scenes connected around a bare-bones plot about Emmanuelle exploring her sexuality and sexual freedom (IE: everyone wants to have sex with each other). Its one of those movies where when they’re not having sex, they’re talking about sex. Not appreciated: the like three times that Thai men have sex in the film – they’re assaults, which comes across as racist sentiment, given the film’s focus on whites in Thailand. Emmanuelle does manage to have sex with every white person in Thailand though. For some reason this spawned about 50 sequels and spin-off series, with Emmanuelle even making it to space! There’s not really any appeal to this film nowadays other than it being a curio of its era, unless of course you want to see a woman smoke a cigarette from her vagina.



Mysterious Object at Noon (2000)
The story of a boy who uses a wheelchair and his teacher – as told by a changing host of narrators who each add onto the story (including some kids who make it about tigers and aliens). So its sort of a quasi-documentary as the hosts are all real people, and their unique additions to the story say a lot about their lives and personalities. My problem is that only about half the stories are actually filmed, so most of the story is told through simple rambling narration as opposed to the few stories where there’s filmed visuals as well (like the alien/tiger story isn’t filmed). That and the director kinda railroads one woman when she was telling the (frankly more interesting) story of her own life, to have her tell him a new story – which begins the whole process… why couldn’t her first story be the basis for the movie instead? I like the concept with this film, but none of the stories really add up to anything compelling or make for an interesting watch. Granted, its more about the storytellers than their story, but we learn nothing about them either.



Anna and the King of Siam (1946)
Ten years before the Rodgers and Hammerstein film came this non-musical adaptation of the story of Anna Leonowens and her attempts to “modernize” (aka Westernize) Thailand. This film was far more factual + I found it to be a far better film than the musical version (but I personally really dislike Rodgers and Hammerstein, so I’m biased). Interestingly, the 1951 film was banned in Thailand for showing a romance between the King and Anna; whereas this was generally more accepted – since it left any notion of romance between the two as vague at best. I’m of course legally obligated to point out the Hollywood ethics of the time: no Thai (or even Asian) actors + immediately calling the country “half barbaric” – (and not really doing much to dissuade that judgement). But despite that, the film has some serious merits for its depiction of female empowerment – where Anna and the King really vie for control – with the King usually having final say, but always realizing that Anna is correct – and deferring to her judgement. For a 40s Hollywood film, this comes across as relatively feminist – especially as they don’t even develop a romance. But for those who can look beyond its 40s Hollywood limitations, there’s a fairly interesting and mildly historically accurate film here.

I thoroughly enjoy these posts. I really like the way you go "overboard" on the cultural immersion (a bit more this time around, even, than usual, no?). I'm sorry the food wasn't quite what you were hoping for. I recently made this Tom Yum soup (non-cream version). It was really good, but plenty hot so the kids passed on it. I'd give it a shot, but add a step where you strain the soup before adding mushrooms, shrimp etc. I didn't care too much for the galangal and lemongrass bits in it since I couldn't eat them, so there was an element of "can I swallow this bit or should I spit it out?" that I'd rather do without. Other than that I found the soup delicious. I couldn't find "bird's eye" chile around here, so replaced them with 4 serrano chiles. I'll use 2 next time.

Aww, thank you so much for reading them! I'm glad that someone enjoys them. All of my friends are like "Uhhh that's interesting...," but I suppose I've always had weird hobbies / passion projects (like visiting the highest point of every county was my big thing a few years ago). Icmforum lends itself to internationalism, and it feels right at home here between the world cups and all of these country lists y'all have been working on. Hell, you're even planning a "best of each country" decade long project - this is all fantastic!

We definitely went overboard, more so than usual for Thailand (much to the annoyance of my partner) -as I enjoy being thorough and covering as much as possible. My favorite part was definitely the entheogen - but that's going to be difficult to do for every country, so I'll probably just post it as a fun fact - which - Fun Fact: most entheogens are also highly toxic, its just they're hallucinatory at a step below lethal (like jimsonweed in the US). I'm sure I'll keep finding more interesting stuff for Thailand over time and keep adding to it, since I treat this blog as a never-ending project. At the very least I hope to find more obscure gems like Magic Lizard (ok, maybe a step above Magic Lizard).

I'm a notoriously picky eater, so its difficult for me to enjoy very much, although I've gotten better at trying new food, just not so good at liking new food. Which says a lot coming from the offspring of my parents - who returned an instant oatmeal to the store because it had chia seeds in it - and the thought of eating chia scared them from even trying it. But that all said - I did love the second coconut curry dish we made - and its gotten me wanting to try Thai restaurants in town to see if I also enjoy their curries. I just can't eat seafood (by choice, not medical) - which limits my options with a lot of Asian cuisine, but my partner would love that soup. I had to look up galangal - which I'm surprised you went hardcore authentic instead of just going with ginger. Now if I get you to pair a meal you cook with a movie, then you're just a step away from your own protracted blog!

I definitely feel that way about visiting a lot of countries - where you stand out too much as a certain type of person just by visiting/existing. Its tough as a 6ft tall trans woman, as I'm sure people would be like "so you here for THE surgery?"

Thai cuisine is one of my favourites, and when I lived in Malaysia it was really easy and inexpensive to get great Thai food at restaurants or food stalls. There are a few decent places here in Canada, but also a lot of disappointing ones. I also make my own Green Curry from a paste, which I quite like. Throw in some coconut milk, vegetables, meat (optional), and cashews, and serve over rice, and you're good to go! Oh, and mango sticky rice? Chef's kiss!

I've been to Thailand thrice, once to Bangkok with friends for a weekend to celebrate a birthday, once to Chiang Mai for a week by myself to get away, and once to Koh Lipe with a friend to relax after a team retreat. Three very different Thai experiences (big chaotic city vs. cool mountain town vs. chill island beach), and I wish I could have gone more often when I lived close by.

To your concern, Knalds, I don't think it's something you should worry about, especially if you're travelling with family. In Bangkok there is for sure sex tourism that colours everything, but it's not in your face and I never encountered it - I think it's the kind of thing you need to seek out instead of it seeking you.

I assume this is because it's a popular destination for sex tourists. Well, I've been, and I don't think this fact should discourage you from making the trip. Many, many, many people visit Thailand who are not interested in sex tourism. And there's plenty of beautiful places to visit and interesting things to do that won't take you near the seedier areas of Bangkok or other major destinations.

All that being said, on the whole, I enjoyed Cambodia and Vietnam more.

Sorry. Most of those are second nature to me since I've been using them for over a decade, I forget not everyone's a geography buff as well.
I'm flattered someone's paying attention to what I watch, though.
They're what I use in my spreadsheet to keep my columns narrow. Most are derived from either the IOC country codes for the Olympics or the ISO country codes. A few are my own modifications to make the code more recognizable at first glance.

Your abbreviated naming system is incredibly frustrating for anyone wanting to track down the country you watched. I know its just me, but reading through your abbreviations feels like a Sporcle quiz.

"MDA, ok so its either Moldova or North Macedonia or Madagascar or Maldives, wait that doesn't have an A after the D, ugh which is it?! *Google search later* ok I guess Moldova wins"

Sorry. Most of those are second nature to me since I've been using them for over a decade, I forget not everyone's a geography buff as well.
I'm flattered someone's paying attention to what I watch, though.
They're what I use in my spreadsheet to keep my columns narrow. Most are derived from either the IOC country codes for the Olympics or the ISO country codes. A few are my own modifications to make the code more recognizable at first glance.

CIV is Ivory Coast / Côte d'Ivoire.

Pffft, I'm a huge geography buff. The vast majority I can figure out just by looking at them. But some of them you use the official name like People's Republic of North Korea; or using native language for some - España

Well the ISO is based in Switzerland, and presumably the committee that devised the three letter codes is as multilingual as the state that hosts the organization. Us anglophones can't get our way 100% of the time although we did get our way for like 95% of them. The IOC is bilingual, using only French or English for its codes. Hence why the IOC uses SUI for Switzerland, as the French name is Suisse. The ISO uses CHE, from the Latin Confoederatio Helvetica.

ZAF is an ISO code evidently derived from Dutch Zuid-Afrika, though that's a little dated now as Afrikaans would use Suid-Afrika. Other peculiar ISO codes include KHM for Cambodia (presumably coming from Khmer), DZA for Algeria (comes from the Algerian Arabic al-dzāyīr), and HRV for Croatia (from the Croatian word Hrvatska).

The more I look at the ISO list, the more I hate it. They just decide at random when to respect the country's own way of spelling their country's name. Like Germany and Spain are fine, but then why not Suomi or Sverige? And who the fuck uses the Latin for Switzerland or not even update South Africa since the like 1800s. Or why is Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic - ESH? This is like the most horrific thing, so I hope you're happy Ferg.
