Image

Asked by a former girlfriend to investigate her husband's disappearance, a cynical private detective finds himself in hot water when the husband turns up murdered here with everyone soon suspecting that the detective and his old flame are in cahoots. The film tries to pack in a bit too much beyond this though for a relatively short feature, but there is something neat in how it almost morphs into a western in its final half-hour as the detective ends up in a small country town with a sheriff who dislikes him. He also meets a moody gas attendant who unintentionally offers him clues in every sentence he utters.

1. The Woman in the Window (1944) #Nov19 - Memories (flashback/amnesia/false memory etc.), Edward G Robinson was great in an excellent suspense.
2. To Have and Have Not (1944) #Nov16 - Set in a bar/Featuring a singer, Slow build up in the beginning, but gotten very interesting 2nd half. Humphrey Bogart played a similar guy as in Casablanca. Lauren Bacall's film debut.
3. Out of the Past (1947) #Nov11 - Featuring a Femme Fatale, Excellent movie with a complicated story of betrayal. Just about an hour and half, but a lot went on.
4. Scarlet Street (1945), #Nov1 - Stuck in an unhappy marraige, another Edward G. Robinson and Joan Bennett collaboration like The Woman in the Window. I like this one evne more.
5. Edge of Doom (1950), #Nov5 - On the run, An impulsive and impoverished young man wanted a big funeral for his mom. Problems resulted. Interesting story, but the the young man gets a bit of annoying. Some miscasts, like Dana Andrews playing a pastor.
6. Woman on the Run (1950), #Nov26 - Featuring a female protagonist - Ann Sheridan played the wife of a witness to a murder, who is disappeared. Very much Hitchcock like.
7. Dangerous Passage (1944) #Nov7 - Featuring foggy scenes - A guy traveled on a ship to collect his inheritance, but ran into questionable people. Interesting story, but cheap quality.
8. Suddenly (1954) #Nov28 - Involving an impostor - Assasination attempt on the President in a small town named Suddenly. LIke a play, but very intense. Hard to go wrong with this one when starring Frank Sinatra and Sterling Hayden.
9. He Walked by Night (1948) #Nov8 - 40's noir - Following the cop procedure in capturing a cop killer. Narrated like a documentary, which took away some impact of the story.
10. Kansas City Confidential (1952) #Nov27 - A heist story/involving thieves - A guy got mistaken for a bank robbery and decided to search for the real robbers. I did not care for it that much the first time. I don't remember why. Must be because of lots of question decision among the characters. I enjoyed much more this time around.
11. The Big Caper (1957) #Nov13 - Involving manipulation - Planning a heist, the big boss' girlfriend falls for a guy falls as they pretended to be married couple during the planning. I liked it a lot.
12. Behind Green Lights (1946) - #Nov15 - Story focused on conspiracy/corruption - A whodunit, while a politician tried to frame the daughter of the opposition during an election. Short, but effective.

16. The Stranger (1946)

After watching Orson Welles' most well known and highly regarded film noir, I figured it'd be fitting to go back and watch this earlier, lesser seen or discussed stab at the genre from the man. For a while, this actually used to be my favorite Welles noir film, around the time I first watched it over a decade ago. Since then, Touch of Evil has risen a bit more in my estimation, but I still have a soft spot for this one and would probably say that I like them both equally.

12. The Missing Lady (1946) * 60 min.
More noir and less comedy than the first two Monogram takes on the Shadow, but scant mystery, with Lamont Cranston getting slugged a lot and solving the case with the evidence of witnesses that should have taken in the first fifteen minutes of a competent investigation.

33 - Blackmail (1947) - 5.5/10 - A smart talking detective gets hired by a rich businessman who is being blackmailed. Before long, murder is added to the mix. I found the detective's patter annoying. It probably was faithful to the source material (pulps), but it didn't translate as well to film.

34 - Blind Alley (1939) - 7.5/10 - A gangster who escaped from prison is on the run with members of his gang. They arrive at a lakefront home and take a psychology professor and his family/guests hostage while waiting for a boat to arrive. The film has good atmosphere and characters.

35 - Bodyguard (1948) - 7.5/10 - A police detective (Lawrence Tierney) has problems with his boss and leaves the force. He is approached by a man who wants to hire him as a bodyguard for his aunt, the owner of a large meat packing facility. He initially refuses, but is drawn into the situation anyway and is later framed for a murder. While evading the police, he sets out to solve the murder he was framed for along with the problems at the meat packing facility. He is aided by his fiancée (Priscilla Lane) who is the secretary for his former lieutenant. I liked both Tierney and Lane here.

36 - Bury Me Dead (1947) - 6.5/10 - June Lockhart stars as a wealthy woman who arrives home from a trip to find that she is thought dead in a stable fire. She attends her own funeral with her face covered, wanting to investigate and find out who was trying to kill her before going to the police. There are a number of suspects, including her husband, the woman who who was raised as her sister, a boxer that she was seeing, and the woman that her husband was seeing. The film is fairly average, but I enjoyed it.

37 - Chinatown at Midnight (1949) - 5/10 - The theft of valuable Chinese objects to sell through an antique shop sparks an investigation which later turns into a murder investigation. The police are on the hunt for the killer, who also happens to be suffering from malaria. It's a fairly boring film.

38 - Dangerous Intruder (1945) - 5/10 - A female hitchhiker is hit by a car. The man brings her into his home to recuperate and his family treats her well, especially the young daughter. Then the mother dies and the hitchhiker decides to investigate because she thinks something funny is going on. Not really a very interesting film for the most part.

39 - Destiny (1944) - 6/10 - Cliff Banks can't catch a break. He's wanted by the police for a crime that he didn't commit. He's been trying to live life the right way, but circumstances dictate his getting into trouble. Then his girlfriend betrays him for the reward and he goes on the run. He ends up on a farm with a blind girl who seems to have some influence or power over nature.

Roberto Gavaldón's Mexican Noirs

25. The Other One / La Otra (1945), 8.5

My favorite of this batch. A poor, humble sister murders and replaces her recent-widowed and now quite wealthy sibling. She essentially gets away with one crime, but steps into another. Dolores del Río is great in the duel roles of twin sisters.

26. The Kneeling Goddess (1947), 5.0

A tale of obsessive love whose twists and convolutions aren't especially clever or well-executed. This is still worth it as a showcase for María Félix and her incredible wardrobe.

27. In the Palm of Your Hand (1951), 7.0

A charismatic clairvoyant tries to blackmail a young widow and gets in over his head. Great characters, barbed verbal sparring, and many shades of moral grey. Unfortunately a couple critical scenes are a bit underdeveloped including a key shoot-out and the unconvincing ending.

28. Night Falls (1952), 6.0, #Nov9 - 50's noir

A tale of betrayal and revenge set against the rarely-featured backdrop of professional jai alai. The main character is so infuriatingly arrogant that it's hard to believe every woman falls for him. The audience is immediately rooting for his inevitable downfall. I think the film would be more compelling if he was charming and likable, but with athletic arrogance as a fatal flaw.

I just rewatched Fantomas (1913) by Feuillade and want to make sure how to log it probably later today. The way I see there are 4 options:

- They are five films, each is longer than an hour, therefore they count as 5 points.
- It's a mini-series so I should count the minutes and divide it by 80, which would be 4.5 points.
- It's one film separated into segments for limitations of the time, so it counts as 1 point.
- It's not even a noir so it shouldn't be counted.

I thought it was an early inspiration for noirs. It's a crime drama romanticizing an elusive thief that cannot be caught and a relentless detective that would go to extraordinary lengths to arrest him. However when I checked the toplists I didn't see it included in any of the various noir lists available on iCM despite its popularity.

Thoughts?

Assigned to protect a female lawyer, a rugged cop uncovers a KGB plot in this action thriller starring William Baldwin and Cindy Crawford. The film was the supermodel's attempt to branch out into acting, something that never quite happened with the poor notices that the film and her performance received, but both Crawford and the overall movie are not that bad. It definitely takes a while for things to warm up with some terrible comedy involving Salma Hayek, but once Baldwin begins to protect Crawford, the film gets a lot more dynamic as the Russians have all sorts of absurd ways of tracking the duo.

Kinda cool about smalltown ostracism and gossip, and about a protagonist who isn't sure if he is really the killer. Short and sweet. There is a weird child actor who screams like a banshee several time in the short runtime.

7. Lady in the Death House (Sekely, 1944) #Nov8 - 40s noir
They wrapped this story in one flashback and one meta story, the man character is having flashbacks while walking the last mile to her execution, and a psychologist is recounting the story. It's not very exciting though, very skippable.
Edit: I messed up and used the tag for #Nov26 twice. I will switch it out with #Nov8 - 40s noir

I took the challenge hosting on this month due to having extra time since I lost my job at the end of last month but I didn't realise the effect that would have on me with sitting around all day again, plus the stress of not having any money outside of my wife's welfare payments to feed the family, which has basically left me incapable of doing much. I'm basically unavailable for the weekend due to Cricket commitments (that is basically the only thing I have done the last few weeks that has given me any mental strength) so it will be at least two days before I can attempt to create the scoreboard.
Any updates?

95. Gambler and the Lady (1952) I think I reached the section of Too Bad it's Good of the tspdt noir list. I actually enjoyed how terribly funny this was.
96. The Strange Woman (1946) Lamar plays the meanest femme fatal, almost cartoonishly mean.
97. Five Days (1954) Plays on one of the most enjoyable tropes of all crime stories ''I'm hiring you to kill me'' lots of fun.
98. Jigsaw (1949) Spotting the various star cameos was more fun than the actual film. Insanely quotable however:
-I'm Barbra.
-Good.
*
-Would you miss me?
-Like my next breath!

Noir revisited:
99-103. Fantômas (1913) [rewatch, favorite]

Wikipedia wrote:The books and films that came out in quick succession anticipate current production methods of Hollywood, in two respects: First, the authors distributed the writing among themselves; their "working method was to draw up the general plot between them and then go off and write alternate chapters independently of each other, meeting up to tie the two halves of the story together in the final chapter". This approach allowed the authors to produce almost one novel per month. Second, the film rights to the books were immediately snapped up. Such a system ensured that the film studio could produce sequels reliably.
So those writers essentially created an elusive thief and a serial killer that can never be caught to keep the publications going, sort of an unstoppable force that plagues society. And they had to one-up each other to come up with more convoluted heists and escapes to keep up the momentum. And eventually creating the immovable object in the character of Juve the detective who's sole purpose in life is to bring Fantomas to justice.

It's a highly romanticized story about thieves and detectives, it probably also one of the first, and finest, narrative story of cinema. Broken into five parts each part in three to four acts for easy viewing. Shame that the last episode were missing some scenes that had to supplemented by text to explain them. An extraordinary masterpiece that pioneered Feuillade's career and set the standard for his future films.

I'm counting it as one entry for now until I get a ruling on it. (my argument is a few posts above)

17. L.A. Confidential (1997)

I'm sure I've watched this for past challenges, but when it's so easily available to watch online (which it isn't always), then might as well take the opportunity. Undoubtedly one of the better American neo-noirs of the past thirty or so years, not much else to say at this point.

40 - Escape in the Fog (1945) - 7/10 - A nurse has a very realistic dream where she witnesses a man being murdered. After she wakes, she meets the man that she saw getting killed and he turns out to be a federal agent. They start a relationship, but circumstances seem to be leading to a repeat of her dream. Short, but pretty solid.

41 - Fall Guy (1947) - 6/10 - A man wakes up in a hospital bed with police wanting to know why he has a knife that is covered in blood. The man was drugged and has vague memories of the previous evening, including finding a dead body in a closet. He escapes and then tries to find out what actually happened and if he did indeed kill the girl.

42 - Fear (1946) - 6/10 - A medical student has money problems with his scholarship being canceled and not having the money for his rent. He gets a bit of money from a professor who has a sideline as a pawnbroker, but needs more and may need to take more extreme measures.

43 - Follow Me Quietly (1949) - 7/10 - The police are on the trial of a serial killer known as 'The Judge' who kills people on rainy nights. A detective lieutenant is in charge of the investigation and receives some aid from a female reporter trying to get a story, but with insights into the evidence.

44 - Following (1998) - 6/10 - A writer who is currently stuck follows random people on the street hoping for inspiration. One day, a man he is following confronts him. It turns out that the man is a thief and he draws the writer into his world of breaking into people's homes. The film isn't bad for what it is, but I didn't really got drawn into it until the last 10-15 minutes.

29. Long Arm of the Law (1984), 6.0, #Nov27 - A heist story/involving thieves

An early, influential Hong Kong gangster epic about a team of scrappy mainlanders planning a doomed jewelry heist. Gets off to a rocky start, but improves as it goes along. I wished I liked it more, especially on the strength of its best moments (including a memorable Kowloon Walled City shootout), but the acting is distractingly bad, the pacing stop-and-go, and the lack of production values lets down some of the good ideas.

30. So Long at the Fair (1950), 7.5, #Nov25 - Involving a disappearance

A woman's brother, and indeed the entire hotel room where he was staying, seemingly disappears when she stays at a ritzy hotel in 19th century carnival-season Paris. A noir formula in an unusual setting once again works for me, and Dirk Bogarde and Jean Simmons bring attractive star power.

31. The Kill-Off (1989), 5.0, #Nov30 - Directed by a woman

Too much substance, not enough style. The underlying story is good; I may check out the Jim Thompson novel it's based on.

32. M (1951), 6.0, #Nov22 - A remake

This remake is unnecessary, lacks the power of the original, and fails to add anything new. But all that said, the 1951 M isn't bad. Joseph Losey directing is decent and there are plenty of solid bit characters.

33. John Wick Chapter 4 (2023), 4.0, #Nov19 - Memories (flashback)

I let myself get too hyped. I have little patience for the nonsensical lore and self-important delivery, while most of what I liked about the original is long gone. I miss the small focused scope, the lean narrative, and the primarily practical effects. There are still some brilliant fight scenes, set pieces, and neon compositions, but it's bogged down in bloat, CG, and aging male actors playing redundant characters that never develop. (Bonus game tag is due to wife flashback at the very, very end.)

Thoughts?
IMDb has them on separate pages so I will allow 5 points as separate movies. As to classing them as Noir I will allow any movie anyone believes will fit. If there is any objections that is when decisions will need to be made.

10. My Favorite Brunette (Nugent, 1947) #Nov28 - Involving an impostor
KInd of an unwilling or accidental impostor, but the baby photographer tries to be the private detective he is mistaken for. It was a lighthearted noir, more towards comedy. I didn't enjoy it that much, but it was entertaining.

Two by Joseph Losey:
104. The Big Night (1951) John Barrymore's son and Drew Barrymore's father is the playing an angry teenager who wants to be a big boy, with lovely Losey unique directing style.
105. Blind Date (1959) the protagonist was on a date with his girlfriend when he entered her open house for the first time, and when he didn't find her he just sat there waiting, only the police showed up. Brilliant but would've loved it a lot more if it didn't have useless flashbacks exploring their self-important characters.

Japanese Noirs by Kinji Fukasaku:
106. Fûraibô tantei: Akai tani no sangeki (1961)
107. Fûraibô tantei: Misaki o wataru kuroi kaze (1961)
Image
Image
Director debut of Fukasaku, who shat four films on his first year of making them. These two are presumably the first ones, are about a ''Drifting Detective'' who goes around solving mysteries, helping damsels in distress, and beating up bad guys with a rifle. If I had to categorize this I'd say it's ''Japanese western noir B-movie'' yes it also feels a lot like a western because for some reason they use revolvers and ride horses. A bit of harmless fun if you don't take the hole-ridden plots too seriously.

108. Jingi naki tatakai (1973) One of the more famous yakuza films. Lots of executions, after the 17th one I stopped caring who lives and dies, a story that spans more than 11 years told in 100 minutes, It has style and memorable characters but I don't believe it fulfilled its potential.

4. Shock (1946): 5/10

Subpar acting overall, but I thought the plot was interesting and, for the most part, believable enough.

2. The Desperate Hours (1955)

1. A Woman's Vengeance (1948) - 5/10 #NOV1
Image

I watched this a fortnight ago so it is a little shaky in my memory. Overall I wasn't a big fan of this one. I never got invested into it, never got invested in the characters and therefore the story. It just didn't offer anything that better done Noirs offer.

Finally we have a scoreboard in the OP.

msainy has a handy lead scoring a respectable 108 so far. Current runner-up is flavo5000 on 62 and 3rd is WalterNeff on 55 with Simba63 just 1 behind.

As to the bonus challenge FilmWalrus is just 1 movie off finishing with Simba63 at 27 and frbrown at 21 the only other 2 having finished 2/3 of the challenge.

Let me know if you see any problems with the scores.
