6. True Grit (2010, Ethan Coen, Joel Coen) FTV

Its been a long time since I've seen the original, but from what I remember, I think I prefer this version. Hailee Steinfeld is marvelous and Jeff Bridges is superb as always. I'm not a big fan of Matt Damon, but he's pretty good here too. A funny, violent, and surprisingly touching movie.

7. Red River (1948, Howard Hawks, Arthur Rosson) FTV

A classic that I should have gotten around to much earlier.

Summary: The First 10 Days

Welcome to a statistical summary of the challenge thus far. I'll also deliver a 20-day summary and an end-of-challenge summary.

Headline Stats
We currently have 20 participants, with a cumulative total of 169 points. That works out to a mean score of 8.5 points and a median of 5 points. Flavo5000 currently leads the challenge with 32 points, followed by PUNQ (30) and gunnar (24).

Bonus Challenge #1
Gunnar currently leads this bonus challenge with a score of 6. Unsurprisingly, the modern Western is more popular than the early modern Western -- challenge participants have collectively seen 15 movies set after 1900 and only three set before 1830.

Bonus Challenge #2
Congrats to Tngy and PopperTheKungFu-Dragon for watching my recommendation!

Years
The most popular years so far are 1966 and 1967. The median year is 1967. Here's a breakdown by decade:
1930s - 12 points
1940s - 19 points
1950s - 25 points
1960s - 37 points
1970s - 18 points
1980s - 6 points
1990s - 7 points

4. The Good Bad-Man (1916): 5/10

In this early silent western, Douglas Fairbanks stars as an outlaw who never knew his father. He sticks up places but hardly takes any loot, and he gives most of it to the needy. While staying in a town terrorized by a gang of bandits, he learns more about what has happened to his parents.

The scenes with "the girl" were kind of nice, but overall I wasn't too impressed. The villain is supposed to be considerably older than Douglas, but they look about the same age. There's also a lot of useless shooting in the air throughout the movie.
Seen
1. The Mississippi Gambler (1953)
2. Billy the Kid Versus Dracula (1966)
3. Blazing Saddles (1974)
4. The Good Bad-Man (1916)

25 - El Infierno (2010) - 8.5/10 - #1900 - Benny Garcia is deported back to Mexico after 20 years in the U.S. He returns to his hometown and finds that his younger brother was a much feared cartel member before being killed years earlier. Drugs and violence are rampant in the area. Benny doesn't have any interest in that life, but is eventually drawn into it by necessity. The film is very violent, but also very good.

26 - Jeremiah Johnson (1972) - 8/10 - After the Mexican War, Jeremiah Johnson (Robert Redford) moves to the mountains of Colorado and looks to take up the life of a hermit. He eventually gains a Native American wife and an adopted son and life seems good. However, he eventually comes into conflict with the Crow and wages a one man war against them. The film is pretty scenic and I enjoyed it.

27 - White Sun of the Desert (1970) - 6/10 - #1900 - A Red Army soldier is wandering through a desert when he comes across a man buried in the sand. He frees him and continues on his way, later encountering and escorting a group of burqa wearing harem girls who were abandoned by their husband. They end up at an old museum by the sea and have to fight off guerrillas led by the husband of the harem girls. It was a mishmash of different genres and the result was just okay.

This gets me the platinum on the IMDb Western list to go along with the bronze I picked up earlier on the Spaghetti Western list. Next year, I'll probably go for platinum on the Spaghetti Western and BFI lists.

3. Sky High (1922) * 49 min.  #1900
Immigration agent Tom Mix infiltrates a gang smuggling Chinese aliens from Mexico. Definitely a contemporary western (the cars with license plates, a truck and an airplane are from the teens or later), with excellent use of the Grand Canyon location and Mix is likable and athletic, but the "humorous" anti-Chinese racism is unpleasant.

Just one more batch of modern Westerns to go, and then I'll see if I can find some old ones to watch.

31. Band of Rebels (2022, Christopher Forbes) [*]
--- A Christopher Forbes specialty.... the worst confederate stuff you'll ever see.

32. Above Snakes (2022, Tyler Smith) [*]
--- Another stinker of a western. This one felt like a day-time soap opera.

33. Jesse James: Unchained (2022, Henrique Couto) [*]
--- The story of Jesse James, how you definitely don't want it.

34. The Bounty Men (2022, Brett Bentman) [*]
--- Barrel scraping western. Got to commend the actors putting on their most serious faces while making this, but even that looks hilariously bad in a no-budget western like this.

35. Dead for a Dollar (2022, Walter Hill) [****]
--- Barebones western with some prominent names attached to it. Walter Hill behind the camera, Willem Dafoe in front of it. At first it felt like a nothing experience, but it slowly grew, much thanks to a Defoe sneaky character and even doing a whip fight straight out of a Lash La Rue film! Still a very toned down wild west picture that could have used some fireworks to elevate the experience.

36. Terror on the Prairie (2022, Michael Polish) [****]
--- The brutal life out in the remote wild west. Bloody affair, and stripped of happy moments. There certainly are a violent scenes that make an impression, but at the same time there is little to balance that, and lacks a better story to make it about more than the savagery.

37. The Long Rider (2022, Sean Cisterna) [*****]
--- That certainly was a journey. A cowboy-style trip from Canada down to South America and Brazil. One would think a it would be a lonesome peaceful ride, but it was anything but. Apart from horse tragedies, tip-toeing around drug cartels and finding places to sleep, the biggest problem was bureaucracy, trying to get across the various boarders. All about a man, his horses and their goal of reaching their destination.

38. Jews of the Wild West (2022, Amanda Marshall Kinsey) [****]
--- Tells the story of several Jews out in the old wild west. Don't go in expecting many outlaw stories. These were more about people who established business or was figures in society of these pioneer towns. A part of history that's not told very often, even if there wasn't that many exciting tales to tell.

39. Murder at Yellowstone City (2022, Richard Gray) [***]
--- I liked it at first. It was cooking up something, but then it got increasingly dull and uneventful. I didn't give a shit by the end.

40. The Last Manhunt (2022, Christian Camargo) [**]
--- A western so simply shot it simply fail to thrill in any way.

41. Der junge Häuptling Winnetou [The Young Chief Winnetou] (2022, Mike Marzuk) [***]
--- Simple children's adventure with the young version of the German created Native American character Winnetou. Easy going without a very thrilling plot. Not sure how interested European kids are in cowboys & indians anymore, especially the European variety.

42. BlackWood (2022, Chris Canfield) [***]
--- Not the worst of westerns, but story wasn't really catching on. More some violent scenes that were okay and kept it alive.

Spoiler
1. Sheriff of Cimarron (1945, Yakima Canutt) [*****]
2. Marshal Law (2015, Patrick Stark) [*]
3. Marshal Law: Insurrection (2018, Patrick Stark & Tom Smith) [*]

A western that curiously turns genre expectations on its head as it weaves a story of a pregnant woman bonding with three outlaws in a time of widespread corruption and cheating during the Gold Rush. The first time that we see the title characters, they look scary and daunting as distanced silhouettes on a horizon, but as we soon discover they have hearts of gold. It is also interesting than the true antagonist here wears a white hat. And a brief actual rush scene is quite a technical spectacle with horses and wagons speeding across the desert, often right towards the camera. Some hilarious comedy parts too.

12. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Ethan Coen, Joel Coen, 2018) 10/10 (re-watch)
13. Scalawag (Kirk Douglas, 1973) 2/10

I think with Scalawag and Posse (1975), Kirk Douglas has directed two of the worst westerns I've ever seen.

4. Man Without a Star (1955) - 7.8
x. Susuz Yaz [Dry Summer] (1963) - 7.8 - not a western, but shares a lot of themes common among westerns, and wouldn't feel out of place if the action was moved from southwestern Turkey to southwestern USA.
Seen Films
1. The Gunfighter (1950) - 8.0
2. Da uomo a uomo [Death Rides a Horse] (1967) - 7.2
3. Il mercenario [The Mercenary] (1968) - 7.4 - #1900 - takes place during the Mexican Revolution

A surprisingly enjoyable ride for the lowish ratings, chronicling the mentor/mentee relationship between a mute grocery store worker and an outlaw who takes him hostage and gradually begins to like the companionship. The two men find intriguing commonality in how they are smarter than others give them credit for and both Paul Hogan and Cuba Gooding Jr. are effective in the roles too. The chemistry between them is divine, despite the occasional weird moment (Hogan teaching Gooding how to ride women to make love to them). More bungled bank robberies would have not hurt, but this is pretty amusing.

Another classic that I'm late getting around to. Good movie though I didn't love it as much as most.

28 - Lonely Are the Brave (1962) - 8/10 - #1900 - Kirk Douglas is a cowboy who doesn't have much use for modern society. He has no fixed address and sleeps wherever ends up. When he finds that a friend of his has been placed in jail for two years, he decides to get himself arrested in order to break him out. Douglas is very good here and the movie is pretty entertaining.

29 - Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969) - 7.5/10 - James Garner stars as a man 'on his way to Australia' who visits a lawless western town undergoing a gold rush. He witnesses a murder in the saloon his first day in town and after he takes the job of sheriff, arrests the murderer (Bruce Dern) and puts him in jail. One problem is that the jail cells don't have bars yet, but that doesn't stop him. The arrested man has a father and brothers who do pretty much whatever they want. This is a fun comedy and Garner is pretty good here. Harry Morgan and Walter Brennan also have supporting roles.

30 - The Shooting (1966) - 6/10 - A couple of miners agree to escort a woman across the desert to her destination. They are trailed by a mysterious gunfighter (Jack Nicholson). The film looks good and starts out fairly well, but I didn't really enjoy it all that much.

31 - The Terror of Tiny Town (1938) - 5/10 - The all dwarf cast plays it straight and it isn't really appreciably worse than other b-movie westerns that I've seen from the 1930s, but it isn't great.

32 - Run of the Arrow (1957) - 5.5/10 - A Confederate soldier can't accept losing the war so he leaves home and heads out west. He befriends an older Sioux scout and earns the right to join the Sioux. He serves as a liaison with the U.S. Army cavalry regiment that is negotiating to build a fort in Sioux territory.

33 - The Naked Dawn (1955) - 7/10 - #1900 - A bandit encounters a farmer and his wife and hires the farmer to drive him where he wants to go. He also convinces him to partake in a robbery. The farmer starts dreaming of wealth and embraces the seedier side to an extent while his wife sees an escape from her current situation in the bandit.

34 - Vera Cruz (1954) - 8/10 - Gary Cooper stars as a soldier who heads to Mexico after the Civil War to fight as a mercenary in the war between France and Mexico. He meets a gunman (Burt Lancaster) and his men soon after arriving in Mexico. They are hired to escort a Countess to Vera Cruz. There is also a subplot about a valuable shipment of gold. Cooper and Lancaster give very nice performances here in a pretty good film.

35 - Meek's Cutoff (2010) - 6.5/10 - A group of settlers in a wagon train get lost in the desert while on the Oregon Trail. It's got nice cinematography, but is pretty slow moving.

These are the last modern westerns I had lined-up. For the most part a depressing bunch. I checked-out TV-series Yellowstone (1918-2023) to see if it was something for me, and I'm hooked. So expect me to watch the entire thing in a few days...

43. R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned (2022, Paul Leyden) [****]
--- R.I.P.D. goes Wild West. Doesn't have the star power of the 2013 film, but I guess they made the most of it. Absolutely a silly movie. Perhaps a little too loose to hook an audience, but one can have fun with it if one let it.

44. Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch (2023, Anthony C. Ferrante) [**]
--- A far cry from Butch Cassidy of old. Bruce Dern saves parts of it, but this was never any fun.

45. Gunfight at Rio Bravo (2023, Joe Cornet) [**]
--- Your typical cheap modern western. The likes of Matthias Hues help give it some personality, but it's still the same bland stuff these types of films are filled with. No true purpose beyond just making a western.

46. One Ranger (2023, Jesse V. Johnson) [****]
--- Modern era Texas Ranger in England helping British Intelligence find a terrorist. More or less a standard action flick, but with heavy western vibes at times, even when in Britain. While a lot of this felt clichéd and cheap, quite a bit of it was also well done for the B-level ambition it had. Funniest thing was John Malkovich speaking almost like a computer.

47. Good Ol Girl (2023, Sarah Brennan Kolb) [***]
--- Documentary on Texas cowgirls. Strong women in a traditionally male dominated professions. Potentially a interesting perspective, but I felt what they delivered was a very thin drama.

48. Two Sinners and a Mule (2023, Raliegh Wilson) [**]
--- Boring western. They tried to add a bit of sleaze with two whores, but whoever made this didn't know what real sleaze was, so even that aspect was a letdown.

49. The Old Way (2023, Brett Donowho) [*****]
--- And then it's on to the wild west picture I'm most excited to see this year. Good or not, it's Nicolas Cage doing a Western! And you know what? The Western is in such a shitter, that this might be the most fun pure Western this year!

3. Terror in a Texas Town (1958) 6/10

When I saw Sterling Hayden in an easy to stream western, I jumped on it. I was deeply annoyed by the awful accent they had him use, which put a damper on the whole experience. I also thought Nedrick Young struggle to feel as imposing as he was to be. Nevertheless, I want more harpoon westerns.

36 - Ulzana's Raid (1972) - 7.5/10 - Ulzana is an Apache warrior who breaks out of the reservation with a small band and goes around raiding - killing, raping, stealing from those in the area. A group of U.S. cavalry along with a couple of scouts, one of them Apache, are detailed to capture or kill Ulzana. It's a pretty good film.

37 - The Hired Hand (1971) - 5.5/10 - Peter Fonda stars as a man who has been drifting from job to job for many years after leaving his wife. He tires of this and decides to return home, accompanied by his friend (Warren Oates). They run afoul of a man in a small town who killed their other companion. The film is slow moving and light on story.

38 - They Call Me Trinity (1970) - 7/10 - We first meet Trinity as he is dozing on a travois being pulled by his moving horse. We later learn that he is nicknamed the Right Hand of the Devil due to his incredibly fast draw. His brother is the Left Hand of the Devil. The two team up to help a group of Mormons who are threatened by a greedy landowner who wants the valley that they are occupying. The comedy here generally worked for me and I enjoyed the film.

39 - Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970) - 7/10 - Clint Eastwood stars as a mercenary in Mexico who rescues a nun (Shirley MacLaine) from bandits who are about to rape her. The nun was raising money for the Mexican Juaristas and the mercenary agrees to escort her to their camp. The mercenary agrees to help the revolutionaries capture a French fort for a large share of the money there.

40 - High Plains Drifter (1973) - 8/10 - A mysterious stranger rides into the mining town of Lago. Word is out that three outlaws are out of prison and likely headed for Lago so the people of the town hire the stranger to protect the town, giving him free rein on whatever he wants. He takes full advantage of this offer. I'm pretty sure that this one is a rewatch, but I didn't remember anything about the film so maybe not. I watched a lot of films on cable back in the 1980s.

4. Lightning Jack (1994)
5. The Pilgrim (1923) REVISION

One of Chaplin's less memorable features, The Pilgrim still feels like a lesser film upon second viewing. The final few minutes are certainly heartwarming and funny and there are some funny bits and pieces involving a mischievous toddler (see above) but the movie gives Chaplin few chances to flex his comedy muscles. It is also really weird seeing the Tramp as a hardened criminal. He does soften by the end of the film and reform his ways a bit, but within the economical 47 minute runtime there are not enough scenes dedicated to him falling in love with the town and its residents for his softening to click.

4. True Grit (1969) 7/10

I've seen Coen Brothers rendition a couple of times, but never Henry Hathaway's take. I enjoyed this more than I intended. I had a good time with it and thought the film was well told. The acting is occasionally shaky, but overall this was a fun film.

6. Lemonade Joe (1964)

Sponsored by a lemonade company, a singing cowboy rides into a crime-ridden town with plans of cleaning the place up and sobering up its citizens in this Czech western comedy. The film is visually inventive throughout, shot in black and white with silent film style colour tinting; there is also a bunch of comedic jump cuts and several shots from weird and wonderful camera angles. The basic idea is fun too with the title character getting the upper hand on the baddies because he never lets alcohol impair his vision or judgment. The songs are not that great, but it is hard not to embrace the sheer imagination.

5. Rio Grande (1950) - 6.5/10

It had some of the John Ford preoccupations I don't care for. The details surrounding military engagement and social engagements. Singing soldiers. A weird obsession with the Confederacy. The tone of the film is also imbalanced, at least the attempts at humor weren't bad, but I could never settle into what the movie was. But man does this film look gorgeous. A true master of the camera and I also think there is a relatively nuanced John Wayne performance (though Ben Johnson steals every scene he is in).

41 - Rio Bravo (1959) - 9/10 - I watched this multiple times on cable back in the 1980s and loved it. Rewatching it now for the first time in 35+ years hasn't changed my feelings toward the film. John Wayne is an older sheriff who arrests the brother of a prominent rancher for murder. All he has to keep him secure in the jail is the town drunk (Dean Martin) and an old geezer (Walter Brennan). He gets some assistance later from a young gunfighter (Ricky Nelson) and love interest gambler (Angie Dickinson). There's plenty of humor and a fair amount of action and I think the film holds up pretty well.

42 - Rio Lobo (1970) - 7.5/10 - This was another rewatch after 35+ years, but I didn't remember much about this one. I've seen it described as a Rio Bravo remake, but it really only borrows from Rio Bravo toward the end of the film. Even then, it lacks the tension from the earlier film. Still, the train heist at the beginning of the film is pretty good and the film is certainly enjoyable on its own. The supporting cast isn't quite as good this time around, but isn't bad. The film starts at the end of the Civil War and then follows a U.S. Army Colonel (John Wayne) as he travels to Texas in search of the traitor who sold army secrets and caused the death of the Colonel's friend. The Colonel is joined in his hunt by a former Confederate officer that he met during the aforementioned train heist escapade.

43 - Sagebrush Trail (1933) - 5.5/10 - John Wayne stars as a man who was sent to prison for a murder that he didn't commit. He escapes and goes in search of the real killer. He ends up joining an outlaw band and meets the killer, though he becomes friends with him before discovering that he did the deed. Both men end up interested in the same shop girl.

44 - Texas Terror (1935) - 5/10 - #1900 - John Wayne stars as a sheriff who quits his job after thinking that he killed his best friend. When his friend's daughter shows up, he helps her run the ranch she inherited until she finds out about his 'secret'.

45 - Angel and the Badman (1947) - 7/10 - John Wayne stars as an injured outlaw named Quirt Evans who is nursed back to health by a Quaker family. He and the adult daughter (Gail Russell) hit it off and he is tempted to reform his ways. Evans has a fairly big reputation and also has a few rivals from his past who aren't far away. It's not among Wayne's best westerns, but it is good and fairly entertaining.

46 - Born to the West / Hell Town (1937) - 6.5/10 - Dare (John Wayne) travels to visit his cousin Tom (Johnny Mack Brown) and ends up getting a job running a cattle drive for him. He also falls for Tom's girlfriend, Judy (Marsha Hunt). Dare gets suckered into a crooked poker game and needs rescuing from Tom.

47 - King of the Pecos (1936) - 7/10 - A greedy and crooked rancher claims huge territory in the Pecos River area and kills another rancher and his wife to get their property and the valuable water rights it contains. The son of the rancher who was killed survives and grows up to be a lawyer (John Wayne). The son returns to the valley after he is grown up to use the law (and force if necessary) to help the local ranchers get their water rights and to bring down the greedy rancher who killed his parents. This is one of the better 1930s John Wayne features that I've seen.

48 - Lawless Range (1935) - 5/10 - John Middleton (John Wayne) heads to visit one of his father's friends who has written his father for help. When he arrives in the town, he helps stop a group of bank robbers and discovers that the man he is going to visit is missing. A local banker has a scheme to scare off people and grab their land and John helps try to put a stop to it.

49 - Paradise Canyon (1935) - 5/10 - #1900 - John Wyatt (John Wayne) is a government agent who goes undercover to try and break a counterfeiting group operating near the Mexican border. It's pretty lackluster for the most part.

50 - The Dawn Rider (1935) - 5.5/10 - John Mason (John Wayne) returns home after a long time away to visit his father. After his father is killed in front of his eyes and he is shot during the pursuit, John looks for revenge against the man who killed him. Things are muddled when it turns out that there is a connection between the woman who nursed John back to health and the killer. The acting and script aren't the best, but it's somewhat entertaining.

51 - The Desert Trail (1935) - 6.5/10 - John Scott (John Wayne) is a rodeo star who claims his winnings at gunpoint when the proprietor tries to cheat him. just after that , the proprietor is shot and killed with blame being cast at Scott and his friend Charlie. I liked this one a bit more than some of Wayne's other 1930s westerns.

52 - The Trail Beyond (1934) - 5.5/10 - John Wayne stars as a man searching for a missing miner. Wayne and his partner discover that there is a secret gold mine and this leads to a group of outlaws trying to steal the claim. This one had some interesting moments on the river.

53 - Winds of the Wasteland (1936) - 7/10 - John Wayne stars as John Blair, a pony express rider who loses his job due to the popularity of the telegraph system. Blair and his partner are tricked into purchasing a bum stagecoach route, but through hard work, smart moves, and some luck, things start looking up, though the crooked stagecoach line owner who sold him the route sets his goons into sabotaging things. This one was pretty good.

54 - The Hellbenders (1967) - 6.5/10 - A Confederate Colonel and his sons are determined to renew the war effort after the end of the Civil War. They hijack a large army shipment of cash and carry it around in a coffin under the guise of their dead son-in-law. They hire a drunken prostitute to portray the widow. The film was okay and there were good bits here and there, but I didn't really get too into the story.

55 - The Return of Ringo (1965) - 7/10 - A Union officer returns home after the war to find that he is thought to be dead, a gang of Mexican bandits has taken over the town, and the leader of the gang plans to force the officer's wife to marry him. The officer goes undercover to try and find out if his wife has been faithful and what the full situation is in the town. This was good, though unrelated to the first film and different in tone. I liked the first film a little more.

56 - El Puro (1969) - 4/10 - Five bounty hunters are looking for a drunken gunfighter with a reward on his head. He's been staying with a woman at a saloon and cleans up his act when the bounty hunters kill his woman. This was very dull.

57 - The Ugly Ones (1966) - 5/10 - A violent bounty hunter searches for an outlaw in his hometown. The people there protect him, not realizing at first that he is just as vicious. The score is very good, but the rest of the film wasn't nearly as interesting.

58 - Vengeance (1968) - 7.5/10 - A man named Rocco looks for vengeance after a gold robbery goes bad. One of his partners betrayed them to a group of bandits and then had another partner tied by ropes tied to multiple horses and torn apart (not shown). Rocco tracks down the betrayer and then the bandits who killed his friend. The film has a good soundtrack and I thought the story and acting were good.

This finishes off the movies that I had lined up to watch this month. I still have Lonesome Dove plus episodes of Bonanza and Gunsmoke in the queue, though, and I may decide to watch a few of the DTC nominees.

I've got 32 films left on the BFI 100 Westerns list and 20 Spaghetti Westerns left as well. I'll probably try to finish those off during next year's challenge.
