Focusing on a group of so-called Violence Interrupters who volunteer their time to talk to struggling black communities to prevent street violence erupting, this documentary has an interesting story to tell. There is a limit, however, to how engaging it is to watch over two hours of watching folks talking to each other, and the documentary begins to feel repetitive long before the end. Very few conversations also occur at the brink of violence erupting. The documentary deserves points, however, for not looking for external sources to blame, instead focusing on what can be done on a grass roots level.

7. Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux (Jean-Luc Godard, 1962) 7/10 ... 2022 Critics List #157 (tie) ... a quality film for sure, but for some reason I just didn't really connect with it

68 - The Indian Tomb (1959) - 7.5/10 - #488 - The sequel/second half of The Tiger of Eschnapur isn't quite as good, but is still entertaining. I laughed at the bits with the lepers since it seemed so much like a zombie hordes from various tv shows/movies.

69 - The Wind Will Carry Us (1999) - 6.5/10 - #318 - A man visits a rural village due to a dying relative. Not much really happens through much of the film as the villagers go about their day. There are humorous moments throughout such as his having to get in his car and drive out of the village to a higher elevation every time he gets a call on his cell phone, the woman who has 9 kids one day and 10 kids the next, and the boy who always has to get to school or study for exams. It's not a bad film, but seemed kind of inconsequential, at least on first viewing.

70 - White Dog (1982) - 8/10 - #75 on the 75 HG list - An actress (Kristy McNichol) hits a dog while driving at night in the hills. She takes it to the vet and the dog isn't badly hurt so she takes it home and puts up signs looking for the owner. However, it turns out that the dog has been trained to attack black people and after a few incidents, she takes the dog to a trainer (Paul Winfield) who thinks that he might be able to undo the training. It's a pretty good movie and a different look at racism.

71 - Salvatore Giuliano (1962) - 7/10 - #410 - The film starts with the bullet riddled corpse of a Sicilian bandit/freedom fighter and then jumps around to his backstory with occasional narration. The film is shot very nicely and looks good, but the story jumps around and I think it was lacking in coherency for those not already pretty familiar with the history of that time period and Giuliano. It was probably fine for the Italian market when it came out since it was relatively recent history for them. I could still appreciate the style.

72 - Marnie (1964) - 7/10 - #278 - Tippi Hedren stars as Marnie, a young woman who gets hired at companies under a false name, works there for a few months, and then disappears after robbing the company. Sean Connery stars as the owner of a company who hires her, even though he recognizes her from one of her previous jobs. I thought the first half of the film was pretty mediocre, but I liked the second half a lot more.

7.-19. Twin Peaks (2017) - #153 on the Critics' top 250 list

Last "film" to check for me on the new Critics' top 250 list. Thanks to this challenge, I finally got myself to sit through this, and I really enjoyed it! A delightful genre hybrid, as was the original series, but with even bolder surreal visions and some great avant-garde film language.

2. West Indies (1979) - #155 on the Critics' top 250 list

3. Sherman's March (1985) * 157 min. S & S Documentaries #65
After breaking up with his girlfriend, Ross McElwee transitions from his planned documentary about the long term residuals of Sherman's March to the Sea to a documentary about his relationships with women that friends or relations try to set him up with, and trying to address unresolved issues with old girlfriends, loosely following the route of Sherman's March. Easy going fun.

73 - The Cloud-Capped Star (1960) - 8/10 - #282 - Neeta is a hardworking and bright young woman who is getting close to graduating from college. She lives at home with her poor family and the little money she brings in tutoring helps make ends meet. One brother is kind of lazy and practices his singing, hoping to make it big one day. Her younger sister is more interested in having fun and finding a husband. When Neeta's father gets injured, supporting the family falls on Neeta's shoulders and is just the first of a series of misfortunes to affect her. The film is very melodramatic, but also pretty good.

74 - Red Desert (1964) - 6/10 - #321 - Monica Vitti stars as a woman filled with anxiety and other mental issues. She is married with a young son, yet feels isolated, apparently due to a recent accident. The film looks great and Vitti does a good job in her role, but I didn't really connect to the story and ended up not enjoying it very much.

75 - Down By Law (1986) - 7/10 - #421 - A pimp (John Lurie) and a DJ (Tom Waits) are each setup and arrested in separate incidents. They are placed in the same jail cell in New Orleans, but don't get along. Then a talkative Italian (Roberto Benigni) is placed in their cell and livens things up. It was kind of low key with a fair amount of humor thrown in and I enjoyed it.

76 - Marketa Lazarová (1967) - 6.5/10 - #198 (and #39 on the 75 HG list) - I liked the cinematography and music quite a bit, but the movie could be a bit of a slog to get through at times.

77 - A Moment of Innocence (1996) - 7/10 - #366 - Mohsen Makhmalbaf stabbed a policeman when he was 17. This film is about the making of a film about the event. It was okay.

Two more 4K remakes were at AFI so I decided to go and see them on the big screen for the first time, though both are rewatches.

4. 8 1/2 (1963) - Greatest 2012 #7 Rewatch - The metaness of this movie is just so great, and so well done. Great visuals as well, very happy to see this in theatres. 9/10

5. Rules of the Game (1939) - Greatest 2012 #5 Rewatch - Maybe it’s because my pre WWII history isn’t great, but this one fell a little flat for me. The scene with Schumacher chasing after Marceau is easily the highlight of the movie, very fun. But everything else was just okay. 7/10

Still hilarious at its best, though quite a bit backfires. The most obvious minus is the brownface makeup, but then there is also an underdeveloped romance that takes up too much screen time and the gags are very hit-and-miss. On the plus side, the basic premise is amazing; the protagonist is described as "some idiot [that] blew up the set" of a movie, and then he proceeds to destroy (and yes, occasionally even blow up) Edwards' elaborate interior sets. Speaking of which, the production design is phenomenal, full of pretty but impractical newfangled sets that would make Jacques Tati absolutely salivate.

78 - Blissfully Yours (2002) - 6/10 - #247 - A man visits a doctor due to a bad rash, but lets his girlfriend and a woman who accompanies them do the talking since he is an illegal immigrant. Afterward, the couple drive to a forested area to have sex and fool around. The woman ends up joining them. There isn't really a whole lot that happens in this film. The earlier section while visiting the doctor was more interesting than the part in the forest.

79 - Landscape in the Mist (1988) - 8/10 - #333 - Voula is a young girl who goes to the Athens train station with her little brother every day with the idea of boarding the express train to Germany to search for their father. The two kids live with their mother and have never known their father, but she has told them that he is in Germany. They finally take the plunge and start out on their journey, but there are many roadblocks along the way, including not having tickets for the train. I liked this one a lot.

80 - Love Streams (1984) - 8/10 - #230 - John Cassavetes stars (and directs) as a Robert, a writer who drinks too much and always is seeking out the company of a number of women. One of his ex-wives shows up one day and drops off the 8 year old son he's never spent time with and he agrees to have him spend the night. He promptly takes the kid to Vegas and essentially abandons him in the hotel room. Robert's sister, Sarah (Gena Rowlands), has mental issues and is going through a divorce as a result. She ends up staying with her brother after the divorce. The film has its ups and downs and there is plenty of humor amidst the pain each is suffering. I enjoyed the film, but I'm sure it isn't for everyone.

81 - The Hawks and the Crows (1966) - 6.5/10 - #695 - A father and son travel around the country, encountering various people and a talking crow. The film seemed to be part comedy and part social commentary, though neither resonated too strongly with me.

20. Reassemblage: From the Firelight to the Screen (1983) - #257 on the S&S Docs list

An interesting documentary about the women of Senegal. Metadiscursive musings instead of a traditional narrative, and some creative editing.

82 - Accattone (1961) - 6/10 - #615 - Accattone is a lazy pimp who runs into a problem when his prostitute is sent to jail. Since he is apparently allergic to work, he recruits a young woman and has her try selling herself on the streets. I didn't really connect with this one. It seems to be fairly well made, but neither the characters nor the story interested me much.

83 - Charulata (1964) - 8/10 - #414 - Charu is an intelligent, but lonely housewife in the 1870s. Her husband spends all of his time with his newspaper and Charu doesn't have much to do with the servants running things in the household. Her quality of life improves with the arrival of her husband's cousin, an intellectual like herself. It's a nice film.

84 - Ossessione (1943) - 7.5/10 - #647 - A drifter ends up stopping at an inn where he helps the owner with a few mechanical repairs. The owner's wife is attracted to him, but won't leave her husband due to the husband's money A pretty nice Italian drama..

85 - The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974) - 7.5/10 - #296 - The real Kaspar is supposed to have spent the first 16+ years of his life in a small room with no human contact and limited things to occupy his time. Somebody took him out of the room, taught him to write his name, and placed him in a town square with a note in his hand. The film seems to follow the historical record pretty closely and the actor playing Kaspar does a nice job, though I found it a bit odd that they chose someone who was about twice the age of the real Kaspar. The first half of the film was more interesting than the second half.

86 - The Mother and the Whore (1973) - 5.5/10 - #70 - Perhaps I just wasn't in the mood for this one, but the endless talking usually wasn't all that interesting, especially with a leading character that I didn't care for very much. The really long run time didn't help either.

87 - The Phantom of Liberty (1974) - 8/10 - #521 - In Luis Buñuel's penultimate film, we are treated to a series of surrealist sketches that are at times loosely connected. Some of them are funnier than others, but overall it is a pretty entertaining film.

A very serious-minded glance into the behind-the-scenes of Bill Clinton's 1992 political campaign. At the centre of the piece are two particular campaign managers with the ostensible point of the film being that these two men (rather than Clinton himself) were responsible for his election victory. It is disappointing how little we get to see of them as individuals beyond their appointed role. Also, while the film drops in some newspaper headlines to add exposition in lieu of interviews and narration, this is sometimes hard to follow for someone not well versed in US politics. The gist is easy to get though.

88 - Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974) - 6.5/10 - #173 - The film started out very well with Julie reading on a park bench and then seeing Céline go by dropping items along the way. The chase scene was fun. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the film for me along with a few other scenes (such as the library) early in the film. It eventually became much less interesting and I didn't really care about the mystery in the mansion at all.

89 - The Tree of Wooden Clogs (1978) - 8/10 - #659 - A good historical drama about poor tenant farming families in Italy toward the end of the 19th Century. There isn't really a powerful story here, but it is more in the experience of everyday life.

90 - La Terra Trema (1948) - 7.5/10 - #572 - A Sicilian family of fishermen try to improve their fortunes, but things don't go well in this Italian neorealist film. It was pretty good.

This works best as an exploration of loneliness with many heartfelt moments as Bruce Dern's lone outer space scientist bonds with his android drones and plays poker with them. The majority of the film though is not about loneliness though but rather environmental concerns with heavy-handed messaging. The plot sort of does not make sense either ("let's expensively nuke these domes to save money!") and the film positions us to root for Dern, and yet with all of his ranting, raving and killing of others to save trees, he is not exactly likeable. Great special effects though and the loneliness angle really works.

Unable to convince his bookie brother to buy into his latest scheme, a crooked lawyer frames him in the hope that his brother will beg for help in this popular noir. John Garfield is excellent as the lawyer in a turn that could only be described as forceful and there is delicious ambiguity in terms of whether he really believes that he is looking out for brother's best interests or just wants to exploit him. Thomas Gomez also excels as his lug of a brother who, as Garfield reasons, has deceived himself into believing that he is "honest and respectable" when in fact he is swindling money by taking bets.

91 - Le Belle Noiseuse (1991) - 7/10 - #750 - A young artist takes his girlfriend to visit a well known, but older artist who hasn't painted for some time. The artist is convince to try and finish a long abandoned piece that could be his masterwork using the girlfriend (Emmanuelle Béart) as the model. There are a number of long shots with the artist sketching or painting and that gets a bit old. The film is also nearly 4 hours in length which is a deterrent. I still found it somewhat interesting, though.

92-98 - Dekalog (1989) (572 minutes) - 9/10 - #352 - I enjoyed all 10 films, though some were better than others. I had already seen A Short Film About Killing and A Short Film About Love, but I watched the shorter episode versions here as well.

99 - Shadows (1958) - 5/10 - #313 - A white man gets into a relationship with a woman named Leila, not realizing that she is a light skinned black woman and not white like himself. He gets cold feet when he finds out. I thought the acting wasn't that great and the story was pretty dull.

100 - The Long Day Closes (1992) - 7.5/10 - #773 - A British schoolboy in the 1950s spends a lot of time at the local cinema. He is bullied at school and has no real friends. It evokes the era pretty well. The soundtrack is very nice. I think that I might grow to like this more if I rewatch it again someday.

101 - News from Home (1977) - 7/10 - #72 on the Doc list - I thought this was pretty boring at first, but started to get into it more as it went along and was enjoying it by the end. My first visit to New York City wasn't long after this film came out. My family visited the city for the Major League Baseball All Star Game during the summer of 1977 so seeing all of the footage of the city from that time period was cool. I even started getting into the letters from her mother, wondering when she would get her next $20 in the mail.

An amateur filmmaker assembles home video footage, old photographs and answering machine messages into a tribute to his mentally ill mother and an autobiography of his own childhood in this rambling and unfocused indie documentary. The vast majority of the film annoyingly plays out like a PowerPoint presentation with endless sentences on screen for us to read in lieu of voiceover narration, while the photographs and videos shown tend to have pointless filters applied to them (mirroring effects; tinting) that distract rather than enhance the life story being conveyed. The final shot/scene was great at least.

4. Lost Highway (1997) * 134 min. S & S The Greatest Films of All Time #342
I usually prefer my film noir without fantasy, but I enjoyed this. The first part, with possible home invasion and other strange occurrences involving Fred and Renee's apartment, had a strong Eraserhead vibe with an overwhelming atmosphere of horror.

102 - Colossal Youth (2006) - 5/10 - #283 - After his home is destroyed, a man wanders around the city and talks to various people. It seemed pretty lifeless and wasn't my thing.

103 - Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988) - 7.5/10 - #219 - The film moves through the lives of a family during the 1940s and 1950s as if moving through memories. It isn't told in a linear fashion and there isn't a distinct narrative, though we do have a death and a wedding. It's more impressionistic with lots of singing throughout. The family definitely has its problems, generally centered on a mercurial father and his occasionally violent ways.

104 - WR: Mysteries of the Organism (1971) - 3/10 - #458 - Part documentary, part fiction, very strange.

105 - Grey Gardens (1975) - 7/10 - #629 (and #10 on the Doc list) - This documentary takes us into the lives of an eccentric mother/daughter duo who have lived in a Long Island mansion for the past 50 years, but have very little money and the estate isn't in great condition. Cats are everywhere and raccoons have free rein in the attic. They are interesting characters and not just because they are the aunt and first cousin of Jackie Kennedy. The daughter seemed more out there than the mother.

106 - French Cancan (1955) - 7/10 - #354 - Jean Gabin stars as a man who puts on shows in this fictional origin of the Moulin Rouge. The story itself wasn't really all that great, though it was adequate, but the film is colorful and generally lively so it is still fairly entertaining.

This was even more effective upon rewatch, knowing everything to come. While the film disappointingly disperses of any is-it-all-in-his-head ambiguity as we meet soon a creepy John Lithgow, the way the main guy's life evolves something like one of his cheap slasher movies is very interesting. Also intriguing is how both main characters work in movie effects (sound and makeup). The film is just as striking on an audiovisual level too as one tends to expect from De Palma with pronounced neon reds, voyeuristic high camera angles and a pulsating Pino Donaggio score. It is the ending that really sells the film though.

This still feels like a film that starts off well only to become decidedly average. The opening is incredible creepy with a young boy conversing with an unseen ghost. The initial hypnosis is well portrayed too as the boy's father images himself in a darkened, ever-morphing theatre (see above) but everything afterwards is a mess. The film is littered with lame jump scares as he sees unexplained flashes of red, and as a ghost follows his wife around, stirring her bathtub water etc. As it turns out, the ghost has no reason to scare anyone, and the story becomes formulaic as the ghost's motivations are revealed.

Born into privilege, the women here are interesting to follow around at first as they bask in memories of past glory. The younger is especially curious with her admission "I see myself as a little girl" despite being in her fifties; with the way she parades in zany dresses and dances before the camera, one truly gets the sense of someone who has never really grown up. As the film progresses though, the pair become more irritating than fascinating and the whole thing grows exhausting as it mostly amounts to two women screeching and complaining nonstop. This actually really fell in my estimation upon rewatch.

I had the same reaction when I saw it. I found the viewing experience deeply unpleasant and the movie itself slightly exploitative.

Good to know I'm not alone  though I actually thought this was pretty interesting the first time round for whatever reason.

Now that the new Sight & Sound list is official, every movie on it is eligible for this challenge. To keep things simple, I'm going to let the 2012 list also remain eligible, although I don't have a link for that list. So everything that was previously eligible for this challenge remains eligible. Only a few days to go.

107 - Memories of Underdevelopment (1968) - 7/10 - #203 (2022 list) - After the Bay of Pigs, a man chooses to stay behind in Cuba while his wife and other family/friends head north to the U.S.

108 - The Scarlet Empress (1934) - 7/10 - #683 (2022 list) - Marlene Dietrich stars as Catherine the Great from the time of her marriage through the time of her ascension to the throne of Russia. The set design was pretty good, though the story was hit or miss for me.

109 - Vive L'Amour (1994) - 6/10 - #522 (2022 list) - The film has very little dialogue and centers around a female realtor and two men who find their way into an apartment that is among her listings. There are things that I like about the film and I liked it a lot more than The River, but overall I didn't enjoy it a lot. It did seem to get the feelings of loneliness across fairly well.
