130. Voyage Into Space (Minoru Yamada, 1970)
I loved the Johnny Sokko series when I was a kid. I used to watch it just about every day when I got home from school back in the 1970s along with Kimba the White Lion and a couple of other shows. I didn't know (or at least remember) that they had edited four episodes together to make a movie.

124 - It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958) - 6.5/10 - A rescue ship picks up the only survivor of the first manned mission to Mars. They suspect that he killed his crewmates so that he could survive longer. Unfortunately, the rescue ship also brings back an unknown and deadly hitchhiker.

125 - The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) - 7/10 - A bomb test in the Arctic awakens a creature that had been frozen in the ice. It slowly makes its way to New York City, wreaking havoc along the way. Another nice 1950s creature feature.

126 - The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (1962) - 4/10 - A doctor who specializes in transplants is in an accident with his girlfriend in which she is decapitated. He is able to keep her head and brain alive using his expertise and starts searching for a woman whose body he can use to transplant his girlfriend's head. It is not a very good film.

127 - X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963) - 7/10 - Ray Milland stars as a doctor who is experimenting with drops that will allow eyes to see beyond the visible spectrum. He ends up experimenting on himself and things go well at first, but soon spiral out of control.

128 - Carnival of Sinners (1943) - 8/10 - A one handed artist arrives at a mountain inn one evening and relates his tale of a deal he made with the devil and his struggles to evade the consequences. It was a fairly familiar story, but well done.

129 - Werewolf of London (1935) - 7/10 - A botanist is in Tibet searching for a rare flower when he is bitten by a strange creature. Back home in London, he spends much of his time perfecting a method to create artificial moonlight and also trying to cure his new affliction.

130 - Frankenstein Created Woman (1967) - 8/10 - Baron Frankenstein has been experimenting with when the soul leads the body. However, Frankenstein really plays only a peripheral role in this story. Instead, the focus is on a young man whose father was executed for murder when he was a boy and the woman that he loves who is tormented by three young aristocratic scions due to her scarring. It was pretty entertaining.

131 - Humanoids from the Deep (1980) - 5/10 - Salmon with an artificial growth hormone that escaped from a cannery lead to mutated humanoid fish killing people in a fishing village and raping the women. It's a pretty dumb movie overall.

132 - The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) - 8/10 - Peter Cushing stars as Victor Frankenstein with Christopher Lee as The Creature. It's a nice version of the Frankenstein story with plenty of gothic atmosphere.

133 - The Day of the Triffids (1962) - 6/10 - A meteor shower leaves most people blind and also brings forth a deadly species of giant triffids which are able to walk and kill. It was okay.

134 - The Diabolical Dr. Z (1966) - 5/10 - Dr. Zimmer believes that he has discovered the parts of the brain that control whether somebody is good or evil. He wants to do human trials, but is ridiculed by colleagues and subsequently dies. His assistant/daughter continues with his work. Some parts were interesting, but I found quite a bit of it to be much less interesting.

135 - The Man They Could Not Hang (1939) - 7.5/10 - Boris Karloff is a scientist who has come up with a method for reviving those who have recently died. His first human experiment with a volunteer student is interrupted by police and he ends up on death row himself.

136 - The Raven (1963) - 7/10 - Peter Lorre is a magician who was turned into a raven by a sorcerer (Boris Karloff). Lorre turns to another sorcerer (Vincent Price) for help. This was a fun fantasy/horror comedy with a magical duel near the end between Karloff and Price.

137 - The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) - 7/10 - Baron Frankenstein evades execution and sets up shop in another town as Dr. Victor Stein. He continues with his experiments and plans to transplant a living brain into a new body. This wasn't quite as good as the first film in the series.

Dystopian prison where no one is really restrained... you just have a bomb around your neck, and it will explode if you try to remove it or if you get too far from the prisoner you're "locked" to - except you don't know who your prisoner is. Well Rutger Hauer escapes (obviously finding out who his partner is), and tries to get the diamonds he stole before the prison warden can. It's... fine. Muted action and much more of a chase vibe to it, since the two escapees can't get more than 100 yards from each other. It all just felt flat and uninspired for me.

26. Save the Green Planet! (2003)
This is absolutely bizarre. A guy thinks a rich CEO is an alien, and kidnaps him to get him to confess. And that's the movie. It certainly earned its place on the Weird Movies list, but had an odd charm to it I felt drawn to.

Yep, courtesy of our friends at AIP. I was really surprised to see it even got a blu-ray release in the US.

An arrogant young man finds himself in limbo after dying where he must complete tasks prior to reincarnation in this complex genre mash. The film's biggest plus is its visuals with a deep red limbo world and great colours all round. The film straddles several genres though and feels uneven. The first hour has a large comedy focus. Some horror also randomly crops up as a boy is pulled through a bathroom mirror, and this subplot is then oddly forgotten until near the end. The middle stretch of the movie is also over-packed with flashbacks, while the second half becomes a somewhat formulaic romantic quest.

04. Atlantic Rim (2013) - Florida / New York - Rating: 3/10
Some giant lizard monsters have hatched and are terrorizing boats, oil rigs, and citizens, but fortunately the US Military has some mech suits to bring some good old fashioned hand to hand combat, and bring those beasts down. The monsters end up stomping around rather busy places - like downtown New York, so there's a bit of a concern about both the combat related casualties (like punching the monster into a building, which then collapses) + also the effects of dropping a bomb in such a highly populated area (that there will be too much damage caught in the fray). The bitter reality they face though, is that the mech suits don't really do anything: when regular weapons can't penetrate the monster's hide, what exactly is a melee mech with a sword supposed to accomplish? The interesting element though is that they add this neural / synapse controller, to make the movements of the suit more fluid, so you can act on instinct, which will make the response time faster... but the issue is that they're connected on a neuronal level, so every time they get hit, they also feel the damage to their body - which proves to be far more dangerous than just being in the suit without this brain gear. So, I wonder why they decided to add this feature at all - though the scientist said it has never been tested, so these 3 mech suit are just dealing with experimental technology - when thousands of lives are at risk. I suppose the idea is that the operators become intune with the suit, that it feels natural and as though you are a part of the mech - so you can have more precise control. Yet, it ends up being the biggest flaw - as they don't gain any better results, but then they are hit with physical pain when hit, so it doesn't exactly seem like this mecha-human robot integration is a very good idea. The whole thing reminds me of one of the classic schizo delusions - where you feel like you're being controlled by external robots - where you feel your movements are robotic and being controlled by some other entity. I've experienced this myself, it is incredibly bizarre - where you retain independent thought as you wonder what the hell this entity is doing to your body, you realize you no longer have control. It feels similar to the mecha-suits neural link here - that someone is inside you and has the ability to determine your movements. This causes all of your movements to feel alien and no longer connected to you or your brain - but it's being predetermined by some entity that has total control of your body. It's just that in the schizo experience, you can't disconnect from the robot's grasp. Anyway, this quickly made Asylum rip-off film (of Del Toro's Pacific Rim) is mostly just day drinking, looking at Windows Media Player equalizer bars, and CGI boxing. Whilst sometimes amusing, Atlantic Rim is mostly too serious to be enjoyed on their own merit, as it misses a lot of opportunities to be mockingly comedic, and that's quite a shame - as it had some potential, and not even MST3K livened things.

Samurai Jack: Episode XXVI - Jack's Shoes (2002) 22 min.

5. Carol for Another Christmas (1964) * 86 min.
A Christmas Carol in The Twilight Zone. A TV movie with very good performances, Rod Serling's post-nuclear war Christmas Future is an interesting variation on the subject, suggesting that the destruction of the world isn't sufficient for many people.

6. Eternals (2021) * 156 min.
Some interesting ideas, but it requires a lot of set up before getting to the main plot, and the philosophical questions fall by the wayside as the action kicks in. As is always the case now in Marvel movies, a sequel is promised at the end, although I think it would have been best if most (or all) of the Eternals didn't survive.

7. House of Dark Shadows (1970) 97 min.
Barnabas Collins, my childhood idol.

138 - Night of the Creeps (1986) - 7.5/10 - An alien creature lands on Earth in 1959 and kills a college student, turning him into a zombie. His body is kept on ice until let out by a couple of guys pledging a fraternity decades later and the creature inside the body multiplies and spreads. I don't remember ever hearing about the movie until seeing it on the TSZDT list. It was pretty entertaining.

139 - Phantasm (1979) - 7/10 - A teenage boy sees some strange things at the local cemetery, including a tall undertaker with superhuman strength. This leads to the boy and his friends battling a supernatural being. It was decent and I can see why it has a big following.

140 - Timecrimes (2007) - 7/10 - A decent low budget film about a guy who ends up in a time machine that sends him back in time an hour or so, contributing to an unfortunate chain of events. The guy didn't seem too bright to me, but it was fairly well acted.

141 - Hocus Pocus (1993) - 7.5/10 - This is another film that I missed when it came out and hadn't seen until now. It was fun and pretty entertaining.

142-147 - 480 minutes of tv shows
The Enchanted Castle (1979) (174 minutes) - Three siblings are enjoying a holiday in the country and set out to explore their surroundings. They come across a large estate with gardens and statues and a sleeping princess with a magic ring. This is a nice adaptation of the Edith Nesbit children's book.

Crash Zone Season 1 (1999) (306 minutes) - A group of teens are brought together by a software company to test video games and develop new ideas. They are soon joined by an A.I. who lives on the internet. I watched this show not too long ago, probably last January, but didn't record it so I decided to watch it again. It's not bad, though the A.I. is a pretty blatant Max Headroom ripoff.

While the opening few scenes are great, especially as the main guy stumbles through dark streets in a daze, this becomes very dialogue-heavy and non-urgently paced as he is taken in by a doctor and his daughter with whom he has a lifeless romance. The second half of the film gets increasingly interesting though as he begins to recover more and more of his memories. The final twenty minutes in particular play out gloriously like a living, breathing nightmare.

29. Hell Comes to Frogtown (1988)
In a post-nuclear war world, there's an abundance of females, and most people are sterile, so fertile men and women are highly prized. When a group of fertile women are kidnapped by the frog people, it's up to Rowdy Roddy Piper to save them and impregnate them. It's as good as it sounds.

30. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010)
I didn't get it. This did nothing for me. Perhaps I'm dead inside, but this was just a slog.

31. Psycho Goreman (2020)
And this might have been the perfect antidote to Uncle Boonmee. Two pre-teen siblings accidentally awaken an ultrapowerful evil being... except they also have the magical amulet that controls the being. It's hilarious viewing what a slightly evil young girl might do. She reminded me a lot of Calvin from Calvin & Hobbes. Tons of fun.

36. Dragonfly (Tom Shadyac, 2002) 3/10

Embarrassingly bad and forgettable schlock. I liked Kathy Bates though. But then again, I like her in pretty much everything.

27. The Age of Adaline (2015)
Romance with a fantasy twist. This was corny but much better than I had anticipated.

28. Reminiscence (2021)
More sci-fi noir! This is a movie that on the whole was bad but had enough good elements for me to enjoy it. Foremost among those were some noirish plot points and the setting, a futuristic half-sunken Miami that is never anything less than gorgeous to look at. On the other hand, the main problem here is perhaps the most expository script I've ever encountered. The voiceover narration is a big factor, but even the dialogue is relentless in explaining everything that occurs. A very typical sequence: (1) something happens, (2) a character explains what just happened, (3) something else happens, (4) a character explains what just happened.

Rewatched after sixteen years, this sound version of Orlacs Hände is a mild disappointment - nowhere near as stylish as the silent classic that inspired it and burdened by very second-rate supporting performances and characters. Peter Lorre's performance though is every bit as impressive upon rewatch. The scenes in which he taunts his patient in disguise and then manically laughs to himself awards are excellent. It becomes an exaggerated performance by the end of the film, but one that works well in contrast to how milquetoast he is at the start of the movie. I really liked the smashed opening credits too.

148 - India Song (1975) - 5/10 - The music is nice and the setting/costumes are good, but I found much of the film itself to be pretty tedious.

149 - When the Cat Comes (1963) - 7/10 - I thought this started out pretty well. A storyteller relates the story of the cat who wore glasses to the school children and then the cat makes an appearance and people become different colors depending on their mood and what they are like. After that, the story is kind of iffy, but the music and some of the antics are still fun plus the special effects.

150 - Krakatit (1948) - 7.5/10 - A doctor and nurse treat a man with delirium caused by meningitis. The man also has injuries to his hands. Much of the rest of the film details the man's memories as they slowly return to him. He is a chemist who invented a very powerful and dangerous explosive. In his delirium, he told a colleague about it and that could have repercussions. I got a bit tired of it toward the end, but overall a pretty good film.

151-158 - 645 minutes of tv shows
Dramarama (1983-1989) - 13 episodes (328 minutes) - Some episodes were better than others. I enjoyed them, though, and I wish that the whole series was available rather than just random episodes.

Eerie Indiana: The Other Dimension (1998) (317 minutes) - I was a big fan of the original Eerie Indiana series and still loved it when I watched my dvd set a decade or so ago. This spinoff series isn't bad, but it lacks the spark and edge of the original series. The writing is part of it, but the acting of Omri Katz and Justin Shenkarow plus actors like John Astin in supporting roles was probably even more important.

Still effective after three viewings, this classic horror film can be appreciated on multiple levels. There are several sequences that gloriously play around with ambiguity and things that may not be there. Most notable is a bus making a cat-like hiss when suddenly appearing at night (cinema's first ever jump scare?). Then there is a pool scene with ominous water shadows. And on top of all this, the film also works as a tale of sexual repression and the dangers of men forcing themselves upon women with complications arising when the protagonist's husband has trouble convincing her to consummate their union.

Well, I must say I'm just as thrilled after a rewatch than when I first saw it.

14. Alice in wonderland, by e Jonathan Miller (1966) 5/10

Not really thrilled by this absurdist adaptation. Alice isn't supposed to make sense, but it should be poetic, thought-provoking, or paradoxical. This version is non of these things...

05. Mom and Dad Save the World (1992) - San Bernardino County / Saturn - Rating: 7/10

Before planning to destroy Earth, Emperor Tod Spengo, of the planet of incompetents: Spengo, kidnaps Dick and Marge – who are on their way to a vacation, because he wishes to marry Marge – as it’s love at first spyglass. The gimmick here is that, despite having interplanetary travel, and planet destroying technology, everyone on Spengo is, well, rather narwhal-brained at best – like having a whole platoon brought down one-by-one with a weapon that zaps people upon being picked-up. The planet’s coup leader Tod (Jon Lovitz), is a queer coded, vain personality who’s always changing his hair and outfit to match his current mood. Tod has power, but struggles with mental prowess, which makes him the right level of challenger for Dick – the man who doesn’t want to be a hero, hell he doesn’t want to do much of anything. The film intends to push Dick’s boundaries, as he’s always picky of food, or activities – just wanting to be relaxed indoors, not doing anything daring, different, or fun (to Marge’s annoyance) – and we get to see Dick finally stop complaining about bodily pain, or having to listen to him refuse to engage with anything – as he’s instead pushed to try living for a change of pace. I find this immensely relatable to my parents – although they’re both more Dick than Marge – doing things like taking cruises around the world, but only eating at Hard Rock Cafes or other chain restaurants, rather than engage with anything approaching local cuisine or culture – as they’re both picky eaters and aren’t comfortable pushing boundaries. There’s a moment in this film where Dick is near defeat, stranded out in the desert of Trona Pinnacles, when he sees an image of Marge go parasailing by in the sky, and for a moment he seems ready to accept death, but he quickly changes his mind and decides he needs to keep fighting for survival, for the sake of Marge. I’ll first mention that this is more about delirium from exhaustion than an actual schizo experience – as most every human is capable of hallucinating if given the right parameters. But this is a moment where Dick recognizes that he can’t quit, and that he must finally give a damn and go outside his comfort zone and fight for his life as well as Marge’s – and this is perhaps the pivotal moment in the film – when Dick can’t remain passive and unengaged. Then to celebrate this new lease of life for Dick, he then eats some cooked giant killer mushroom – in an act that signals that, fuck it, he’ll do anything once, finally. This is the sort of neat character development that I wish would happen to my parents – so that they too could leave their small comfortable surroundings and have something approaching an adventure – just something out of the ordinary and fun – rather than just count down the days until it's time to pick up the grocery order again. Sadly, I watched this with my mom, who was unengaged and thought the film was too weird, so the film’s theme of living for a change of pace, was sadly lost behind the ambiance of humanoid fish and dog people. There’s an important message here, that I recognize in my parents, but alas – for the people who really need to hear it, too much is lost behind the film’s excesses (“weirdness” as my mom put it), but hey, it still manages to be fun, and I can at least see the positive changes in myself and pass it along to others.

24. Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) - James Cameron really is that guy. He's like the novelists of the 18th and 19th centuries who wrote the same book 20 times in a row, but nobody cared because they loved that story. That's what we get again with Avatar 2. It's more of the same from the first Avatar. But damn it if I didn't have a great time seeing this one in IMAX 3D.

Image

25. Fantastic Voyage (1966) - Wait a minute--is this an educational movie? (-the kid from The Princess Bride probably). Very of its time, from the effects to the story beats to the acting. Not that it's a bad movie, but you kind of have to watch this through a historical lens like Nosferatu or Dr. Caligari. Somehow a brain surgery ends up taking our microscopic heroes on a journey around most of the highlights of the human body: heart, lungs, ears, arteries, brain, and eyes. They just couldn't find a way to get the mouth involved I guess.

Image

26. Penguins of Madagascar (2014) - Fun fact: Author John Green has said that his provocative opinion is the opening sequence of the film is "one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history." Here's his podcast about the scene if you're curious. https://the-anthropocene-reviewed.simpl ... e-dZN9eB8z

Image

27. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015) - Oof, this was a mess. Philip Seymour Hoffman deserved better as his final film.

Image

28. A Scanner Darkly (2006) - Did not gel with this film. The hangout scenes with Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr, and Woody Harrelson were my favorite parts.

20. Jiu Jitsu (2020, Dimitri Logothetis): 3.5- what a waste. It has the premise (a combo of Predator and kung fu action) to be a very entertaining movie and it has some inventive ideas, like a long take from a first person POV, but alas the excecution is so terrible the enjoyable parts can't make up for all the bad parts.

It was interesting to see this story told over 100 years ago, but it's rather weird with children acting it out. Like no, I don't want to concern myself with which child that child wants to marry.

33. Mr. Vampire (1985)
Totally fun - comments in 1000<400

34. Timecop (1994)
Rewatch because I don't have a rating on it. Surprisingly not bad and a little better than I remember. Not as much JCVD action as I'd want, but still enough to satisfy those urges.
