I haven't seen the movie, so I was curious enough to look it up. I don't see a Doubtfire among the characters. What's the connection to the Robin Williams movie?

There isn't really, except that the guy dresses up as an old woman for much of the movie and it reminded me quite a bit of the Mrs. Doubtfire character, though different circumstances of course. He even visits his daughter while in drag. I went back and put the name in single quotes. Sorry about any confusion.

The special effects still feel liked a very mixed bag here. Watched for the first time in nine years though, the film was also far funnier than I remembered. Bill Murray has many great lines ("yes, it's true; this man has no dick"), there is a ghost dog hilariously mistaken for a "cougar", and the team's initial near accidental killing of innocent cleaning ladies are amusing. In fact, the film is generally funny in the earlier stages as they bumble and fuddle about.

12. John Carter (2012, Andrew Stanton): 4.5
13. Knowing (2009, Alex Proyas): 5.0 - This really falls apart in the third act, what’s been until then a grounded small scale scientifically-minded sci-fi with a good character arc of Nicolas Cage working trough his trauma of not being able to save his wife, turns into a full-scale world ending disaster movie in which the forced in, unconnected overly religious themes take center stage. Making it feel like this was the victim of a massive rewrite.
14. Green Lantern: Beware My Power (2022, Jeff Wamester): 4.0

Spoiler
1. Black Adam (2022, Jaume Collet-Serra): 5.5
2. The Mummy Returns (2001, Stephen Sommers): 4.0

5. AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004, Paul W.S. Anderson) rewatch: 6.5 > 6.2
6. AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007, Colin & Greg Strause): rewatch: 5.5 > 4.0
7. Predators (2010, VS, Nimród Antal) rewacht: 6.5 > 4.8
8. The Predator (2018, Shane Black): 4.0
9. Prey (2022, Daniel Trachtenberg): 8.0
10. Strange World (2022, Don Hall & Qui Nguyen): 7.2
11. Abominable (2019, Jill Culton & Todd Wilderman): 4.5

The movies I wanted to watch last night were on Kanopy, which was screwing up majorly, so I put this on in lieu of my regularly scheduled viewings. And I'm really glad I did, because I loved this one. In this cyberpunk future, you can record people's brains, not only seeing exactly what they see, but feeling what they feel. There's an underground market for this stuff, because it is illegal, and mostly used for adrenaline junkies and porn.
Spoiler
But after a Black political activist/rapper is murdered and blamed on gang activity, a recording surfaces of a witness watching two white cops shooting the activist/rapper while he's on his knees and unarmed. In light of George Floyd and *gestures broadly at everything*, this aged quite well.
I thought it was awesome. Great coloring and gritty feel to LA. Also kinda funny to me that for a film that ends just after midnight on 1 January 2000, I watched it less than three blocks from where I spent the night of 31 December 1999.

22. About Time (2013) - A surprise entry in the 2010s ICM most favorited list. Cute movie with heart. But a tad manipulative as well. Also I agree with the commenter on ICM who said there are *way* too many disparaging prostitute jokes.

23. John Dies at the End (2012) - I can tell I’m a bit in the minority on this but I found this quite amateurish and poorly acted. A couple of fun moments but overall this is a thumbs down.

Viewed for a second time, this still pales against the original but is relatively enjoyable. The plot does not make a lot of sense as everyone suddenly believes that the team were only ever hoaxers, but watching them reduced to performing at kids' parties is fun, while a new concept of sewerage ectoplasm that causes negative human emotions is intriguing. Everything culminates once again in a ridiculous climax though, and this time round the ghosts are less scary and dangerous, but the majority of the film is an amusing ride and the banter between Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis is great.

This belated follow-up has Egon's estranged granddaughter discovering his legacy and carrying on his ghostbusting ways in an outskirts town. Mckenna Grace is excellent in the lead role, capturing many of the mannerisms that Harold Ramis brought to the iconic character. Logan Kim is also a lot of fun as her best friend/sidekick and there is a lot of fun to the pair of them tearing up the town while trying to take down ghosts. The downside of the film is that Grace and Kim are not always the focus with three foreseeable cameos distracting from their achievements during the climax, while there is A LOT of fan service.

Revisited after more than twelve years, this is still very impressive, opening with such a sense of wonderment and mystery. While glowing eye effects when we finally meet the kids are a little corny, there is much to like in the eeriness of how they move, communicate, dress and look alike. Rewatching the film, I felt in two minds about how quickly the film demonises the kids ("let's kill rather than study them!"), but whatever the case the brick wall climax works.

I mean, WTF did I just watch? This was absolutely bizarre. But I liked it. But nutso as balls. But super interesting, nonetheless. Wife happened to be in the room the last 15 or so minutes of this film and asked a few questions, to which I consistently replied "I have no idea." No clue how to categorize this. I thought getting high might help with the understanding and appreciation aspects of this film... data are inconclusive at this stage.

22. Megalodon (2018)
You didn't think I could get through a challenge like this without doing a shark movie, right? Well, in this one, Michael Madsen acts like he's 20 minutes away from his next line of coke to perk him back up to get through the rest of the day. Also, a big-ass shark attacks a military thingamajig. And apparently the military protocol in a god-damned shitty shark movie is not accurate, which is the subject of at least half of the IMDB reviews. Oy.

Remaking the classic British horror film, John Carpenter tries to change a few things around here. The biggest change is talk of abortion and the discovery that there is something amiss with all the babies before they are born, something that comes with some satirical sting as the government offers cash payments to those who choose not to abort since they wish to study the babies when brought to term. With all this postulating about what to do, more than a third of the film passes though before we meet the children, and then when we do meet them, they far too quickly resort to sadistic measures.

22-23. Counterpart (2018)
A fantasy version of a Cold War spy thriller. The defining battle isn't between East and West but rather between parallel worlds. I only lasted four episodes. There's nothing wrong with this series other than it's kind of boring.

24. Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
This is … fine, I guess. It has less of the drop-off in quality that you usually see when comparing original feature film and sequel. But like most sequels, it’s a retread. James Cameron still has the action chops, and the more high-tempo scenes here still crackle with energy. I guess I’m most disappointed that a director who, for most of his career, has created movies that were exciting and innovative has done something here that is almost exactly the same as his previous movie. And all of the visual wonder of that movie no longer lands the way it did back in 2009. We’re used to this kind of spectacle now.

That's exactly what I was expecting based on everything I've heard. I'm glad you put it that way, as it's a nice way to manage any expectations.

Incidentally, I have a bunch of the old Uncle John's Bathroom Reader trivia books, and one of them has a section on "great films that never got made" which includes Avatar. I always chuckle when I stumble across that.

The always excellent Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson take the lead roles here as two neighbours who discover something supernatural. The pair decide to film and document the phenomenon, which gives the movie a pseudo-documentary vibe, cutting between what we see and what their cameras see. As a sci-fi buff, the disappointment for me was a lack of resolution, with everything a metaphor for their friendship. The film still looks and sounds fantastic though as one would expect from the duo. The inclusion of archive footage and home video footage at various points is particularly eerie and effective.

112 - Black Sheep (2006) - 6.5/10 - When an experiment from a genetics lab is loosed by an animal activist, the local sheep turn deadly. A decent horror comedy from New Zealand.

113 - Body Snatchers (1993) - 7.5/10 - The third take on this classic science fiction/horror story is pretty good. I still prefer the first version, but this one and the 1978 version aren't far behind.

114 - Chopping Mall (1986) - 7/10 - A large shopping mall is set to debut their new high tech robot security guards. However, a lightning storm causes them to go haywire their first night and they start killing off the people who are there after hours, including a group of young people who are having a party in one of the stores. It was fun.

115 - Die, Monster, Die! (1965) - 7/10 - When a man goes to visit his girlfriend at her parent's estate, the villagers want nothing to do with helping him find the place and things seem pretty creepy when he does arrive. The father (Boris Karloff) is secretive and confined to a wheelchair. The mother is bedridden and hides behind a gauze curtain. Only the daughter seems normal.

116 - Fiend Without a Face (1958) - 6.5/10 - Residents near a US Air Force base in Canada are upset because they think the base is responsible for disturbances to their animals and for recent disappearances. An officer is assigned to investigate. The movie wasn't too bad, except that I thought the design for the creatures wasn't that great.

117 - The Man Who Changed His Mind (1936) - 7/10 - Boris Karloff stars as a scientist who has perfected a method of exchanging minds between two subjects. However, he is laughed at by his peers and his benefactor threatens to destroy his work and blackball him, This drives him crazy and he uses his machine for his own benefit.

118 - The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932) - 6.5/10 - British archeologists have discovered the tomb of Genghis Khan. Dr. Fu Manchu (Boris Karloff, who certainly appeared in a ton of films) wants Genghis Khan's mask and scimitar for his own purposes. The film was vilified for its racism, but other than that is entertaining enough, even with a somewhat nonsensical plot.

119 - The Stone Tape (1972) - 6.5/10 - A research team sets up shop in an old mansion that is supposed to be haunted. They find evidence of a new recording medium for the paranormal. It was okay.

120 - Trancers (1984) - 7/10 - A cop is sent back from the future to stop a criminal who traveled back there to eliminate the ancestors of those in charge in the future. It's a fun low budget film that I enjoyed quite a bit. The sequels don't seem to be as highly regarded, but I'll probably check at least the next couple out eventually.

121 - Cemetery of Splendour (2015) - 7/10 - This is the fourth movie I've watched this month from director Apichatpong Weerasethakul. His style is pretty easy to recognize. I thought there were a lot of interesting visuals and I found the movie to be somewhat relaxing, but I can see where the languid pace could definitely be seen as a negative. The story is less interesting (a sleeping sickness among soldiers and one nurse befriending a goddess). I like the film, but it definitely won't be one of my favorites.

122 - Bacurau (2019) - 8/10 - Bacurau is a small and remote Brazilian town whose matriarch, Carmelita, has recently passed away at the age of 94. The town gathers to celebrate her life and to mourn. Soon after, strange things start happening such as the town disappearing from online maps and a couple of strangers on motorbikes riding through town. I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

123 - 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957) - 7/10 - A rocket returning from the first manned mission to Venus (which had been kept secret from the public) crashes in the Mediterranean near Sicily. One survivor is rescued, but there was another passenger as well - a specimen of a native creature from Venus that grows very quickly in Earth's atmosphere. A decent science fiction film with a stop motion creature.

Spoiler

If not quite as worthless as I had remembered, this still certainly sits well in the shadows of the previous three films. The biggest plus is the intriguing notion of the zombies communicating with one another; most of the movie though only expands on ideas from the previous instalments, such as humans being unable to live together in harmony even during a zombie plague, and humans becoming more animalistic towards each other while the zombies become more human. There are some incredible zombies though, most notably one whose twisted-off head springs forward to bite its victims (see above).

24. 1990: The Bronx Warriors (1982)

There was a certain charm to the post-apocalyptic styles of groups in this film, but it wasn't good. Basically, the Bronx is declared a hell hole, and there's no law there any more, so various gangs rule the streets. Some rich girl from Manhattan ran there, and her family(?) is trying to get her back. And for an action film, the action was awful. Like the car chase scenes were just motorcycles following a semi truck down a street while driving the speed limit. One of the gangs was cast with dancers - and their fight scene looked like the fight choreographer said "OK, dancers, I'm going to play 'Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting' and y'all do the rest." But if your name happens to be Vlad, there were several impalements in this film to get you all riled up.

Loosely based on local folklore, this Galician arthouse drama revolves around some superstitious villages unsettled by a mysterious rock that washes ashore at the same time that accidents occur. Or something like that. As the film progresses, the narration/dialogue becomes increasingly sparse with the film eventually descending into spectacular plot-free images. Of particular note are the parts shot in red filter towards the end. Even beyond the reds near the end though, we get some sumptuous high camera angle shots of gushing green rivers and black and white waterfalls. Plot really takes a backseat though.

25. Colossal (2016)
A preposterous movie. It’s a kaiju movie that’s also a sci-fi comedy that’s also a domestic thriller. The premise is ludicrous, and all of these elements shouldn’t work when mashed together, but somehow they do. By the way, Jason Sudeikis, whom I knew mostly from a few episodes of It’s Always Sunny, can really act.

26. Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)
Remember Skynet, the artificial intelligence that becomes self-aware and takes over the world in the Terminator franchise? This is the story of the rise of Skynet. Only, here it’s called Colossus. And there are no terminators. It’s a decent thriller, although the sound design is rough, making the dialogue sometimes inaudible.

Set in the future, this animated rock opera revolves around a scientist who creates a four-armed rock star in his laboratory, hoping to use the power of music against the "thought police" of the time. It is quite an outlandish premise and the film comes with equally outrageous imagery. Many sequences are also set up as comic book panels with moving captions. Fun as all this inventiveness is at first, it tires by the halfway mark, and the non-stop song soundtrack became a bit headache-inducing for me. I also though that the human characters were pretty poorly drawn, fun as the KISS makeup is and all.

1. About Time (Curtis, 2013) 9968 checks, 1 official list
The time travel is merely a device to build some Richard Curtis mawkishness around. It's never used in an interesting way and opens up some baffling plot holes. Curtis directs competently, but the film and message is bland and superficial.

2. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back - Despecialized edition (Kershner, 1980) [Rewatch] 112741 checks, 25 official lists
Incredible sci-fi adventure. Non-stop entertainment, visuals and twists that have become major parts of pop culture. The effects, cinematography, music, acting... Everyone here is at the top of their game. If I had one complaint it would be that Luke's training at Dagobah feels over too quick in story terms.

3. The Electric Grandmother (Black, 1982) 24 checks, 0 official lists
A TV movie adaptation of Bradbury's excellent short story about a widower and his family taking in a robot who is the perfect comfort. It's interesting to see such a positive take on the effects of humans being replaced by technology, and the direction and actors handle the emotional moments powerfully. It's let down a bit by how cheap it is: it can't do true justice to some of the key moments. Definitely worth watching, but I'd recommend reading the short story first.

It used to be that I'd watch every Rick and Morty episode the day it came out, but I got a bit tired after 4 episodes season so decided to binge it when it was all out. It's... decent, I suppose, and better than the last season, but it still seems like a shadow of the greatness of the first four seasons. I feel the replacement of almost the whole writing room killed the show. The wit, dark humour and existentialism is much reduced, and the scatological humour, which was never the show's strength, has been heavily emphasised.

5. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (Mercado-Crawford, 2022) 316 checks, 1 official list
Much better than I expected it to be. Close in quality to the original Shrek. Has some effective and stylish uses of animation (though it's clearly inspired by Into the Spiderverse), and the story about Puss in Boots coming to terms with his mortality as is nicely done. Sterling characterisation work from the rest of the cast too. Could have used more jokes, but what's there is fine

6. M3GAN (Johnstone, 2023) 148 checks, 0 official lists
An interesting counterpart to The Electric Grandmother, in that again we have a robot taking over the parenting duties for a bereaved little girl, but this is a dystopian, pessimistic take, heavily influenced by fears over rogue AI learning negative traits. There's a strong subtext condemning the use of technology as a substitute for parenting. It's pretty funny, but benefits the most from the emotional performance of Violet McGraw as she bonds with the doll.
