2023 Challenges: Voting for 2023 Options (Voting Closed - Results in thread!)

#1

Post by sol »

For the past six days, we have nominated potential 2023 Challenge Ideas on this thread. Several dozen options have been nominated, of which we will be looking for the nine best performing options to be placed into the 2023 schedule.

Like last year and the year before, we are going to use private message voting.

It is hoped that this will encourage participants to vote for options that they actually want to see run in 2023 rather than just options that they see as doing well in a publicly visible poll. With this in mind, I would request that you do not use this thread to list which options you have voted for. Once voting has closed, I will publish a list of who voted for which options, which can then be discussed if the interest is there to do so.

Private message voting also gives us the ability to allow power voting (giving multiple points to certain options), which cannot be done with an open poll. When selecting the nine options that you would like to make it into next year's schedule, you will be able to award:

- 3 points to one option;
- 2 points to three options; and
- 1 point to remaining five options.

You do not have to vote for nine options - you can vote for less. Please make it clear which options you want to power vote. Your ballot might look like:
EXAMPLE ONLY wrote:
Criterion & MoC - 3
Razzie Nominees - 2
Banned Films - 2
Long Films -2
Sol's Top 850 - 1
Sport Films - 1
1910s - 1
1920s - 1
1990s - 1
Once I have collected an adequate sample size of ballots, I will begin posting regular anonymous updates of which options are performing best.

Your name will be listed as a "thanks for voting" in the anonymous update so that you can be sure that I have included your vote.

What the anonymous updates will look like:

etc

DEADLINE FOR VOTING: Thursday October 6 @ 11:59pm GMT (Friday 7:59am AWST)

It is possible that I might not be awake at 7:59am, so I will accept ballots until I check the forum, but I suggest not waiting until the last minute.

So, without further ado:

Please send me a private message with up to 9 of these options that you would like to see run as an Official Challenge in 2023:

Hey folks -- If anyone needs clarity on the list options and what exactly would be included in a particular option, I encourage you to check the nomination thread here.

That being said, since it's not clear in that thread, can I ask what would be included in Critics Lists? Would that be all critics or you would have to choose a particular critic? Or something else?

All the lists under the Critics tab on your iCM progress page. There would also be the option to include Unofficial Lists depending who is hosting, but that's the criteria that was used last time that the challenge was run.

I love the Rest in Peace suggestion. That could make for a lovely month of celebrating and remembering those we have recently lost. Thanks to the nominator of this one!

Fourth update!

There haven't been any big changes since last time (though now only 3 of the top 4 best performing options are repeats from this year) so for today's update, I thought I would provide a different sort of stat to chew on.

This is a pie chart of the 20 best performing options in the poll so far (suggestions with 7 points or more). I like how evenly split it is. So yes, there might be a lot of repeat-2022 options towards the top, but there are also plenty of older challenge ideas (challenges we ran in 2021 or earlier) and brand new challenge ideas that area accumulating lot of points. :)

With a little less than 47 hours left to vote, I will not be posting any more updates after this, as per tradition.

I'll post the options that receive the most points on this thread after the Thursday 11:59pm GMT deadline. At that point, we can discuss what to do about ties (if there are any) before I post the Setting Up the Schedule thread.

These are the options that acquired the most points:

1. Run the Director - 22pts
2. Academy Award Noms - 19pts
3. Low IMDb Rating - 17pts
4. LGBTIQ+ - 14pts
4. New Releases - 14pts
4. Run the Actor - 14pts
7. Doubling the Canon List - 13pts
8. Sight & Sound Lists - 12pts

The following options tied for the ninth (and final) spot on 11pts:

9. 1970s - 9 ballots
9. In Competition at Cannes - 7 ballots including one 3-vote
9. One Film / Each List - 7 ballots including one 3-vote
9. Submissions FLF Oscar - 7 ballots including one 3-vote
9. Personal Top Lists - 6 ballots including two 3-votes

Things to consider:
- Submissions has never been run as an Official Challenge before
- 1970s was on more ballots than any of the other options
- Last Cannes challenge was all the way back in 2019
- Last 1970s challenge was in 2020

I can do a quick anonymous/open poll if everyone prefers that to discussion

So what's next?
  • Discussion of how to break the five-way tie
  • I will post a list of all options with number of points acquired in the poll
  • I will post voter breakdowns (this could take a while because I don't know how to automatically do it from the spreadsheet that sortile built for me)
  • I will open a thread to discuss scheduling for next year because we can do this even without knowing what option will be our #9

I would prefer 1970s because it appeared on more ballots and thus has more widespread support, but it's probably easiest to just do a snap poll for the five options tied for the ninth spot.

I don't know if it's a typo, but I voted for LGBTIQ+ and I don't see my name under the list of voters. I'm not sure if it matters though because it's still in the top voted.

You're right - on both accounts (my error and it not making any difference). It seems that I accidentally placed your 2 for LGBTIQ+ into the Multiple Versions column instead. I'll fix it above now. :)

I also think it makes sense to go with the 1970s. It received two more votes, so does have wider support.
That's all, folks!

I find it surprising the 1970s got the most votes of any decade, considering there's no 1970s poll next year, and the decade polls and challenges often went hand in hand.

I'd pick the International Oscar submissions since it's the only new idea in the tie (and it's the only one I originally voted for). 1970s may have wider lukewarm support, but less passionate support. :D
I'll even volunteer now to host it if that's something people are worried about.

But yeah, like blocho said, a quick poll is probably best.

As requested, I have put a brief poll together: viewtopic.php?t=6077

Unfortunately only a 24 hour poll since we need to get everything finalised by Sunday night my time unless somebody volunteers to take over from me!

Fergenaprido wrote: October 7th, 2022, 5:09 am I find it surprising the 1970s got the most votes of any decade, considering there's no 1970s poll next year, and the decade polls and challenges often went hand in hand.

That’s why it got my vote too now.

Unfortunately only a 24 hour poll since we need to get everything finalised by Sunday night my time unless somebody volunteers to take over from me!
Just to be clear you need to finalize the poll only or the setting up the whole schedule before Sunday? In case of the later I can take it over for you.

Whole schedule. If not, I guess somebody else can always copy and paste it and fill in the gaps later. I just don't want this to be at the back of my mind at all when I'm back at work.

Okay I’m willing to take that over after Sunday for you. We can see how far we come by than. But honestly it seems unnecessary to me to rush completing that in a few days when we have two months to do so. It will also give oppurtunity for people who haven’t logged in this weekend to react on the schedule.

Yeah, the only reason that we are rushing things is because nobody wanted to take over from me  so thanks for being the only person to volunteer.

Let's give it to some time on Sunday and then I'll pass things over to you. That way I'll at least have Sunday evening to myself before it's back to work. What time are you likely to wake up on Sunday?

I will be able to check this forum Sunday somewhere in the afternoon, let’s say after 13:00 Dutch time. Does it really matter? You can post your last post and schedule so far, and I can take over from there and check all comments since than.

Well, crap. I apparently missed the voting. I guess this is what I get for not checking for this thread's existence... My votes would've definitely changed some of the results too...

Btw, in case you're wondering, I would've given Weird Movies Lists a 3-vote which would've pushed it above the 5-way tie you've got on your hands now.
