Some pretty big surprises here, Ten barely making the top 30 being the biggest one.

I decided last minute to squeeze in Cremaster 3 instead of City of God, which seems to have been a decent decision. It did not need any help, though those top positions are remarkably close when you look at the points. Especially 2-7, just 1 ballot could have changed that completely.

I am surprised I'm the only one voting for Women in the Mirror though. Thought there were a few more Yoshida fans here.

Huge fan of the director, but not of this particular movie
Biggest surprise is the lack of love for Grandrieux here...
Not so surprising, but I still don't get it, is the love for West of the Tracks (landing at #16 with 3 number 1 positions). I have disliked other works from this celebrated docu filmer, but this one felt like such a slog, and so technically inept at times, that it truly baffles me where the love comes from

I've seen 92/131
Highest unseen is Oasis at #20
Most want to see first is Frida at #41

Maybe the people who sat through 9 hours of that feel obliged to vote the film into several lists, so that other people will have to endure it too :ph43r:
(Just joking, not seen it myself, maybe it's fantastic, maybe it's dull, idk)

At least the right gimmick film entered the Top 10 and the pretentious one left.
Chicago at #24 has the least mentions out of the first 35 films, if that translates to something useful for anyone.

We were the only voters for Ju-On (D:)
That movie must really have suffered from all the sequels and remakes, and overall the J-Horror hype dying down.

agreed - i think it's a masterpiece of horror! one of the few films that is a trauma metaphor that also manages to be a great and effective horror first and foremost. i don't mind some of the sequels and remakes but you're right they probably did dilute the perception

fun fact: shimizu was a student of kiyoshi kurosawa which i only found out after watching ju-on and thinking it seemed similar to cure

I remember watching City of God in a screenwriting class 10 years ago this month. I fell asleep but I was interested so I went back and watched it at home.

I’ve seen nearly half the films in the top 130, and close to half of my choices (8) made the top 20 which may be appropos.
What’s most interesting is that two films with fewer than 1200 IMDb votes cracked the top 20 based on a small cadre of followers (10), and the highest placer of the two has only around 300 imdv votes.

Nice to see the Claire Denis film has also found an audience, here, probably the same 10 who support the Piavoli film.

Heremakono, Zhou Yu de huo che, Respiro, and Divine Intervention deserve better, as do Carnages, and Dom Durakov, and The Dancer Upstairs, which only got votes from me.

Heremakono is my favorite African film by my favorite African filmmaker,

Zhou Yu de huo che is a poetic romance set in rural China inspired by Mood For Love,

Respiro is a Sicilian family comedy/drama set on a small fisherman's island featuring the lovely Valeria Golino,

and Divine Intervention is a dry satiric Palestinian take on life in Jerusalem that reminds me a bit of Roy Andersson's films.

As for Carnages, this is another bizarre comedy / drama that follows the death and afterlife of a Bull killed in the ring. Though it is French, it feels more like a cross between something by Bunuel and Almodovar.

Dom Durakov kind of like a cross between One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and King of Hearts, Russian style. A war time satire set in mental hospital that also feels like something by Jiri Menzel.

And, The Dancer Upstairs is a political thriller set in Peru, and directed by John Malkovich, featuring an outstanding performance by Javier Bardem.

Given that there are 131 films that got at least two votes among a fairly small group of participants, it would seem that many of you included films on your lists that escaped most participant's attention. Would love to hear more about the favorites you believe have been overlooked and how they might appeal to those who haven't seen them.

City of God is probably one of the first well received films i've ever seen, like as a teenager, and I think i watched it because of IMDb, although i'm not 100% sure since i have not seen any other films from the IMDb top 250 back than, just City of God. I however loved it a lot. But i'm not sure why i watched that film, and none of the others specifically.

Finally found the time to add this one to iCinema: https://icmforum.com/2022/08/06/top-50- ... ars-later/

Feel free to share.

If anyone has the time to add our lists and do small write-ups, let me know. Teproc and Gromit add so much value in the first post that they almost write themselves.
