Beach House - Teen Dream (2010): 9/10

Image

Because of a Sebby reminding me of it, i'd thought i'd maybe had to relisten some of their albums, which I did.

Image

Image

I like this album, apparently more than I remembered, even though i've listened it a couple of times last year too. In 2018 i listened to Lover of Mine too much on repeat lol, and sometimes don't remember all the other songs that much, because they often sound "similar" but it's a good album! Didn't know I liked Take Care so much. Track 6-7-8 is the good triple track in a row here instead of 4-5-6-7 i thought it was, but I like Walk In The Park a lot too.

Beach House - Bloom (2012): 9/10

Image

I like this album too, apparently also more than I remembered even though i seem to have always liked it, just couldn't remember it a bit less well. The first 5 songs are obviously superb and Troublemaker is also excellent but I remembered that track less well from the name. I just have the feeling i've listened to Bloom less than I should because of Irene, which ruins somewhat the album. I think Beach House is a band you have to be in the mood for, more than any other bands and that if you don't like their sound, you might not enjoy it all, because it can be a bit repetitive. They often don't have a real stand-out track and this is absolutely the case for Bloom, because they're all kinda good. Hard to pick a favourite of this album, and always was.

Beach House - Depression Cherry (2015): 9/10

Image

This remains the best album of Beach House and the one I probably know the best. PPP perhaps lasts a bit too long. And the opening track and especially the latest track aren't the best but all the other ones are magnificent. Absolutely magnificent. The haziness of Sparks, the catchiness of Space Song, the ethereal parts of 10:37 that always make me giggle because it's kinda over the top lol and the chill vibe associated with Bluebird. I love it.

Beach House - Thank Your Lucky Stars (2015): 7/10

Image

I have listened to this album (outside of Rough Song) less and I see why. I don't know the songs all that well as with the other albums where they are already very recognizeable and memorable, even if i forgot somewhat how they went. The start is good, the end is good but the middle part really is not that great. The only thing I need to do is listen a bit more to "She's so Lovely" and maybe Majorette as well, but outside of that, this isn't the best Beach House album, out of the four i've listened so far this evening it's the worst one.

Beach House - 7 (2018): 8/10

Image

Image

This one is the one i should give more plays. I remember one party okay-ish, the other part less well, but there's potential for some songs to grow, although it is a bit more "experimental" and less in my comfortzone than the other ones, but some have nicer sounds. Maybe you have the foundation for what would become Once Twice Melody, but the songs are a bit less catchy, and some are still catchy here but with a different sound. I like some songs, i have to listen to the other ones a bit more, this is definitely an album that i need to give a few more plays, as i actually haven't heard it in a while, and as when it released i was kinda addicted to the singles and listened less to the entire album in a whole. That being said, it is better than I thought, some songs were better than I remembered, esp. the ones that I already seem to have listened a lot too. Of course Lemon Glow is great, but the other ones surprised me. Forgot almost about Black Car, that is probably the second best single. Pay No Mind & Dive are great too. Dark Spring okay-ish.

____

Beach House albums ranked
1. Depression Cherry
2. Bloom
3. Teen Dream
4. 7
5. Thank Your Lucky Stars

But remember that I need to give 7 definitely a few plays and maybe TYLS but that has less potential i've heard to grow. OTM i need to listen too definitely, but that will take a while before I have a good judgment on that one.

_____

Beach House favourite songs
1. Bluebird
2. Lemon Glow
3. Sparks
4. Rough Song
5. Beyond Love
6. Space Song
7. Lover of Mine
8. 10:37
9. Black Car
10. Better Times
11. Walk in the Park
12. Lazuli
13. Other People
14. The Hours
15. 10 Mile Stereo
16. Majorette
17. Dive
18. Wildflower
19. Pay No Mind
20. Myth

some have to grow a bit, and Bloom has the disadvantage that it doesn't really have a stand out track, but has a very good flow and overall good tracks). 7 has the disadvantage that I need to play them a bit more, and TYLS has the same issue but Rough Song obviously i played that one enough to know i absolutely like that one.

Della Zyr - Vitamins and Apprehension (2022): 9/10

Image

Della Zyr's album is one of the discoveries that I cherish the most so far this year. It's a Korean dream pop/shoegaze album that is more on the emo-side and has a lot of structures you associate with post-rock, but being on the soft and more ethereal side. It's an album i've played a lot of the time already in the past weeks and month, it being released in january this year.

There is little music out there that fits / suits me more than this does. It's like the most laki-like album out there, which is why i've played those songs so often already. I absolute love with every piece of my heart, and in some ways it fills the spot listening to Pygmalion for the first time of the year did to me last year.

Here is the album if you want to listen to it.

Other albums i've listened to for the first time since the last update on march 15th, all ranked in order. I suppose it's a bit of a controversial one now that I see this one, but i'm just ordering everything based on how much I enjoyed something, and don't really care about reputation.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus (1977): 8/10 [JAMAICA] Roots Reggae
Irène Drésel - Kinky Dogma (2021): 7/10 [FRANCE] Electronic, Minimal Techno
Yaeji - Yaeji EP (2017): 7/10 [SOUTH KOREA, EP] Deep House, Ambient House
Let's Eat Grandma - Two Ribbons (2022): 7/10 [UK] Synthpop, Electropop
Yaeji - What We Drew 우리가 그려왔던 (2020): 6/10 [SOUTH KOREA] Hip House, Ambient House, Electronic
Os Tincoãs - Os Tincoãs (1973): 6/10 [BRAZIL] Samba, Afoxé, Candomblé Music
The Beach Boys - Sunflower (1970): 6/10 [USA] Pop Rock, Sunshine Pop
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Catch a Fire (1973): 6/10 [JAMAICA] Roots Reggae, Reggae
Stan Getz & João Gilberto featuring Antônio Carlos Jobim - Getz / Gilberto (1964): 6/10 [BRAZIL] Bossa nova, Samba-jazz

Listened quite a bit of albums in the background as of late.

I am familiar with the work of Bob Marley, but never really listened an album of him. Pleasantly surprised with Exodus, that was consistently good. Catch a Fire was slightly less my thing, Stir it Up saves the album a bit. The Brazilian albums were solid, but a tad too repetitive for me. I talked about Sunflower in the rate the artist topic more in detail, but it had one very good song in particular "All I Wanna Do", as well as the latest song being quite good. Kinky Dogma was very good, but it felt slightly too repetitive and it weakened towards the end, although the best song is the latest song.

Apparently the Brazilian album from 1964 is my first album i've listened from that year in particular. Also, seems like I "unconsciously" picked a lot of summer albums with the reggae, samba and sunshine pop

Kali Uchis - Sin Miedo [Del Amor y Otros Demonios] ∞ (2020): 9/10

Image

Another excellent album that I wanted to highlight. One of my absolute comfort albums from an artist that I feel is continuously growing on me, being both artsy but still accessible and catchy, especially telepatia is a very catchy song, but I especially can relate to the very chill vibe, while the voice quality is excellent and the album itself has a quirky identity that I like. One of my favourite (mostly) spanish-language albums.

Novos Baianos - Acabou chorare (1972): 9/10 [BRAZIL] MPB, Samba
Kali Uchis - Por vida (2015): 8/10 [COLOMBIA, EP] Neo-Soul, Alternative R&B
Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges - Clube da Esquina (1972): 8/10 [BRAZIL] MPB
Kali Uchis - To Feel Alive (2020): 6/10 [COLOMBIA, EP] Contemporary R&B, Alternative R&B

This is great.

Acabou chorare immediately clicked, and probably already is my favourite album of the 1970s so far. Clube da Esquina was also very good, but for that one i need more repeated listenings, since it is quite a long one, slightly less catchy & upbeat, but still sounding very good. Por vida is also an amazing EP with the length of a regular album. Kali Uchis truly is a great and underrated artist. One of the greatest artists right now, hands down.

Highlights:
Novos Baianos - Preta Pretinha (& more)
Kali Uchis - Melting (& more)

Peter Tosh - Legalize It (1976): 7/10 [JAMAICA] Roots Reggae
Prince Far I - Under Heavy Manners (1977): 6/10 [JAMAICA] Deejay, Roots Reggae
Os Tincoãs - Os Tincoãs (1977): 6/10 [BRAZIL] Afoxé, Samba
Exuma - Exuma (1970): 6/10 [BAHAMAS] Caribbean Folk Music, Psychedelic Folk

Listened quite a bit of albums. None were bad. Especially liked beabadoobee and Alborosie's albums, but I knew a lot of the songs on the latter one.

Listened quite a bit again. Perhaps the warm weather and my desire to relax a bit and not do much in the warmth causes me to listen quite a bit of music while afk gaming or browsing the internet.

Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album (1996): 7/10 [UNITED KINGDOM] Drill and Bass, IDM
Tough to get into and thought this would be nothing for me, but after the third track i liked every remaining track (4 to 10). I also think something similar is the case on his first album, where i simply like the last two third of the album, but less the start. Hard to rate, after listening once. I need to listen this more often, as well as more work by Aphex Twin. So far i like it.

Image

Mona Evie - Chó ngồi đáy giếng (2022): 7/10 [VIETNAM] Experimental Hip Hop, Art Pop
Fun but maybe it needs a bit more focus. Fun experiment, and at the core this group feels very fresh, but i think a little bit more focus would result in them making a classic. Definitely a must tho if you're into weird music, but it is mostly in the english language. This album has freak folk, hip hop, dream pop, psychedelic, industrial & cloud rap influences.

Image

The Killers - Hot Fuss (2004): 6/10 [UNITED STATES] Pop Rock, Post-Punk Revival
Better than expected but contrary to the consensus, i didn't feel like side B was worse than side A, and I also felt like side A wasn't that rememberable. I don't know the songs very well, even if i have probably heard Mr. Brightside before? The only bad tracks are the last one and the bonus track, but outside of that, the B-side wasn't really bad. In terms of sound i was surprised by the post-punkish sound that reminded me of Interpol, later work of Arcade Fire, Editors but most of all The Strokes' 2001 album. In later work that I quickly explored I felt like the band was more similar to U2 and Coldplay, specifically on the track human which i heard often on the radio, but always thought that was a song of U2, apparently it is from the killers.

___

Obviously i have not listened this album before, and haven't consciously experienced The Killers during their prime. I think that's what's eventually make me one of the earliest pioneers of generation Z, which i identify more with than with millennials, simply because I don't seem to have a good idea of millennial culture with many gaps, while it seems like I naturally fit within gen Z. Based on birth date, i am on the border between both generations. I feel like I literally experienced growing up to a teenager just on that border that defines it, while more people today have experienced a similar phase of growing up as I did, than back when I did so. Even if a border between generations is artificial, i still feel like the way i communicate on the internet, my musical taste and my style are more reminiscent of gen Z, while I also believe that it feels like i've grown up with the internet which is more common today than back in my time.

I will also use this style from now on to keep track of what I listen. i think it is nicer to read, hearing a little bit of explanation and seeing some images.

Sky Ferreira - Night Time, My Time (2013): 8/10 [UNITED STATES] Synthpop, Noise Pop
This is a great album that sounds very fresh, and I really like the noise pop influences on this album. It brings something new to the table. The instruments in particular are very good on this album, especially when it comes to the genre, while the vocals are great too. It's an album that will have to grow on me, but where I hear a lot of potential. It didn't steal its reputation. Especially the B-sides slap.

Image

Pixies - Surfer Rosa (1988): 7/10 [UNITED STATES] Indie Rock, Alternative Rock
This is a well known album i haven't listened yet, and I can see why it has the reputation. I like the instruments and vocals of the album so far, but in order to unravel deeper layers in this album, i'll have to listen it more often. Where is my Mind? is a song i know from Fight Club and that I already like a lot, but the other songs seem to offer quite a lot too. I love the raw instruments and the humorous touch on this album.

Lalleshwari - Lullabies in a Glass Wilderness (2005): 7/10 [UNITED KINGDOM] Singer-Songwriter, Art Pop, Experimental
This is an excellent album that I enjoyed, however it has a very weak end, especially the 18 minute long track was annoying and basically ruined the album for me. That's very unfortunate, because this had the potential to be an absolute great album, with very nice instrumental and experimental-sounding sounds while the vocals were notably heavily on the emotional side. The vocals are very touching, and the instruments sound very fresh, it is just a shame that the end is so weak and that prevents me from rating this higher.

Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You (2022): [UNITED STATES] 8/10 Indie Folk, Folk Rock
I really like this album, one of its strengths that despite the long length the album doesn't get boring towards the end, being quite innovative and catchy in its own way, with a lot of great standout tracks. Make no mistake, i'll need to listen to this album quite a lot, before I can make a better judgment, even if i already know some songs quite well. I especially like Change, which is an absolutely wonderful track. Very atmospheric album too, and I tend to gravitate towards those. This is indeed a highlight of the year so far.

Image

Panda Bear & Sonic Boom - Reset (2022): 7/10 [UNITED STATES, UK] Neo-Psychedelia, Psychedelic Pop, Indietronica
The newest album of Panda Bear was something I wanted to listen. It also had some good reviews. I've never heard of Sonic Boom before. This album is quite a good one, even if I definitely prefer the album of Animal Collective that was released earlier this year as well as the Person Pitch album, but it has some good psychedelic pop songs. Solid album.

Image

Weezer - Weezer [Blue Album] (1994): 5/10 [UNITED STATES] Power Pop, Alternative Rock
To be fair, this isn't really my cup of tea. I liked the last song: "Only in Dreams" the most out of the album, but aside of that, both the album and other songs have little to offer. I think this is an album some experience some feelings of nostalghia for, i don't share these feelings. It isn't that the texts also have to offer something.

Cuushe - Butterfly Case (2013): 8/10 [JAPAN] Ambient Pop, Dream Pop
This is an excellent album that in the meantime I listened a couple of times and is finally growing a bit. The kind of music definitely is my cup of tea, not really that well known, but in terms of style very closely centered to some albums that I love a lot. Cuushe is a great and underrated artist with quite a lot of great songs. This album is atmospheric and very ethereal and definitely gives the good vibes. I need to listen it more in order to get even more attachment, as it isn't the album of the "catchy tunes", but it is getting there and it definitely has the potential to grow to a nine on the scale to ten.

Image

Warpaint - Warpaint (2014): 7/10 [UNITED STATES] Dream Pop
Not the easiest album to listen or prefer, but I kinda like the instrumentals of the group with female vocals. The album Warpaint released in 2014 isn't easy because it doesn't have the immediate catchy tunes, but is very atmospheric and especially hypnotic. I risk repeating myself, but this is also an album i need to listen more frequently in order for it to grow. I think the 2010 album is an easier one to get into. Definitely a band i need to listen more often to.

Image

Interpol - Antics (2004): 6/10 [UNITED STATES] Post-Punk Revival
After Turn Out The Bright Lights, quite a disappointing release. It isn't bad, but it doesn't stand out, and after a hit like TOTBL it is even more painful to release an album like this instead of something that totally sucks. It isn't bad, but it just isn't TOTBL. And it misses a lot for me in order for it to be engaging. I especially lack atmosphere, and that was the main strength of TOTBL which made that album perhaps one of the best alt-rock / post-punk albums to be released this century.

Cuushe - Waken (2020): 7/10 [JAPAN] Dream Pop, UK Garage
Solid album, more electronic and danceable than her previous album. It's been growing on me since I initially thought it was a bit lacklustering. Magic though which I already knew for a long time is an excellent and catchy song, and the other songs are mostly solid. Cuushe proofs once again to be an underrated artist. I prefer their other album: Butterfly Case which has grown quite a bit on me in the meantime, being a very atmospheric album.

Image

Playboi Carti - Die Lit (2018): 7/10 [USA] Trap, Cloud Rap, Southern Hip Hop
This has interesting instrumentals but at the same time it feels kinda repetitive if you listen to the album in a whole, which is why I don't feel like this is growing on me since i've listened it the first time, which is now a few weeks ago. It is interesting, has a good beat, and doesn't bore me for one listen but it doesn't offer me enough to keep me engaged for multiple listens.

Image

Empress Of - Save Me (2022): 6/10 [USA, EP] Dance-Pop, House, Electropop
This is an artist i used to like earlier albums from, but I've been less into recent work. This was recommended to me that I need to give a listen, but I don't think anything has changed. It feels plain forgettable. It is by no means bad, but it also nowhere reaches the level of earlier work. I might simply not like the more accessible change in style probably here.

Ecco2k - E (2019): 7/10 [SWEDEN] Alternative R&B, Art Pop, Ambient Pop
Solid, quite atmospheric but I need to give this a couple of more listens as well to get to learn this better, but it is a good album while maybe lacking the thing that sets it truly apart. Surely a great piece of art.

Image

Kanye West - Yeezus (2013): 7/10 [UNITED STATES] Experimental Hip Hop, Industrial Hip Hop
West hasn't really clicked for me so far, i'm not sure if after listening this album that has changed, however I kinda like this surprisingly. I found this to be an interesting album that catched my attention. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and the artist so far felt quite overrated, but Yeezus is solid and maybe has more interesting instrumentals wheras hip hop usually is too focused on lyrical context for me to enjoy it. Yeezus though is very fun to listen to, but also need to give this more listens to have a better judgment.

Image

おとぼけビ~バ~ [Otoboke Beaver] - スーパーチャンポン (Super Champon) (2022): 6/10 [JAPAN] Hardcore Punk, Garage Punk
This was okay, kind of a short album which might be why I listened this, but it isn't really my genre and i don't think that's about to change. So quite average and okay for me at the end, but nothing more than that.

溶けない名前 [Tokenainamae] - 制服甘露倶楽部 (2017): 8/10 [JAPAN] Noise Pop, Shoegaze
This slaps so hard, even for a person that has listened tons of shoegaze this still sounds fresh and catchy, while at the same time it resembles that magic of the nineties combining it with the Japanese feeling. Shoegaze for some reason fits Japan as well, and Tokenainamea might actually be the best Japanese shoegaze band that I know off since I also love the album from last year. I didn't listened this one, but it sounds just as good, maybe even better. Great album!

Image

Aya Gloomy - 陸の孤島 (Riku No Kotou) (2018): 8/10 [JAPAN] Synthpop
This is also one of my favourite artists, but I haven't listened this album yet. Wheras i used to especially like the EP while I thought the other album (Tokyo Hakai) was kinda meh, this one is actually a good one too. It isn't of the same level of the EP which is one of the best EP's i've ever heard, but it is still an upper tier album, no question about that, and it also still sounds fresh, catchy and interesting and i've given it quite a lot of plays already, especially certain tracks.

Image

Bark Psychosis - Hex (1994): 8/10 [UNITED KINGDOM] Post-Rock
Album that I should have listened sooner and is known as a (forgotten) post-rock classic, especially the early variant before the GSYBE variant was popularized. I love the early post-rock sound way more than the latter one which I honestly don't like, and that's why a majority of post-rock releases don't do it for me. This one however is from the early variant of post-rock, influenced more by the dream pop, shoegaze, more spacey sounds and early post-rock releases. I like it, very atmospheric and great, but I need to give it a couple of more listens. The only post-rock of this variant that I discovered that was produced after 1997 (GSYBE) is actually Sigur Ros. All the other post-rock releases post-1997 i simply don't like at all so far. No wonder Pygmalion is one of my fav albums of all-time!
