a journey through the swinging sixties

ImageImage

My main reason for posting this is related to my annual goal of focusing on 1960s films in 2022.
Beginning with the 1960s there is a rather noticeable drop-off in films I’ve seen compared to later decades-

Image

I plan on seeing a minimum of 50% (30%?) of the 1960s films currently on my watch list. That’s ~170 (96) films, or 13-14 ~8 per month, if I go at it consistently.
Anyway, I'll just be logging 1960s movies here as I watch them over the course of 2022...

If anyone wants to join me you guys are most welcome :)

This is the decade where I have the most favourites but I have seen more films in any subsequent decade except the 70s so it is worth a little boost: I will try to keep it my third most watched decade for this year (after the 2010s and 2020s) and watch 3-4 movies a month.

I have a lot of 1960s favorites as well, despite it not having as many views. All ten years fall in my top 20 according to ye olde IMDB.

1. Black God, White Devil / Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol (Glauber Rocha, 1964) 7+
Visually not as striking as Rocha's later films but it has a few memorable moments and the soundtrack and folk songs make a lot for it.

I have not updated this for a couple of years but you might find one or two titles you haven't seen on this list (EDIT: Went ahead and updated this list with a few more titles):

I've got a few from the 60s lined up to watch this year so I'll post any remarkable finds.

I mention Joanna (UK 1968) not because it's a particularly good movie (it's rather a mess) but because it exemplifies the swinging sixties almost better than anything else I can think of. (Granted I saw it 50+ years ago.)

I have a tolerance for "mess movies" ;) and this looks really swinging, like you said. Plus it's UK... (l) I'll def check it out, thanks 3eyes.

Hope you can find it. The ending was great fun.

I remember I saw a really awful Norwegian one in an Oslo theater - Psychedelica blues (Norway 69).

3. The Visit (Bernhard Wicki, 1964) 7+
Good suspense and strong performance of Anthony Quinn that really gives the film some depth that the plot otherwise lacks.

Hope you have as much fun with it as I had. The whole "Spessart Trilogy" is worth seeing (they can be watched separately though, the ties that bind them are mostly related to the changing location - an inn the woods in the first, the haunted castle next, and an apartment complex in the third -, plus the presence of the ghosts). They all play wildly with genre conventions (the first opens with a wonderfully scary forest sequence, before turning into a cross-dressing swashbuckler romp, and the third plays with time travel and sci-fi tropes, with one of my favorite visions of the future - "Picassos come and go, but German garden gnomes will stay forever"), but the best is definitely the middle one 'The Haunted Castle', which besides being extremely entertaining (and occasionally gruesome - a grand-guignolesque sequence of decapitations and dismemberments is unforgettable), lies, beneath its amiable nature, a scathing, sharping satire with memorable characters and one-liners.

4. Yearning / Midareru (Mikio Naruse, 1964) 7-
Did not hook me as much as some of his earlier films but this is still a powerful drama well engrained in post-war Japanese society.

Image

5. Éducation sentimentale (Alexandre Astruc, 1962) 6-
It takes the characters of the French novel masterpiece in a modern environment but even as a loose inspiration, it does not really work well: it is lacking the epic romantism of the original without bringing any of the transgression or freedom of the 60s.

6. Chushingura (Hiroshi Inagaki, 1962) 7-
Pace is a an issue for most of the film, with too many inconsequential scenes and characters, until the last hour (out of three and half) which has a great build-up. The bloody finale does not disappoint. Visually it holds well but would deserve a restauration to fully appreciate.

These just sound better and better!

I miss the challenges somedays but I don't really have the proper time to devote to them anymore. I got burnt out by all the discussion about changing them and after taking a few months off I find it restful not competing so much! At first I watched stuff in a very random manner but I'm getting into thematic riffs again so maybe that will lead me back into the challenges - I lurk them sometimes to see what people are seeing when I do have the time.

Hey peeps - my favorite part of your 60's journey has been all the great images that you and jd and others keep posting. I've been very "sixties" deficient in my watchings this year (here and there between 1917-2021, so far), but have a few lined up that excited about. I'll post 'em when I see 'em!

Thanks, beatnik! Join in whenever, or if you can... no pressure/ no obligation.

When I started this project actually I had decided to post images for every 60s flick I saw; I hope I can keep it up all year. I don't normally post so many images in the challenges, and it does take a bit more time. I also think it's implanting the films I see in my brain a bit more though too, on the plus side.
My fav of my pics I've posted so far is the one for A Cold Wind in August...
