7. The Lonely Wife / Charulata (Satyajit Ray, 1964) 7-
Not the best Ray in my book, the characters relationships feel simplistic but there are a number of sequences that are visual wonders.



8. Bell' Antonio (Mauro Bolognini, 1960) 8-
Womanizer Antonio, under the traits of Marcello Mastroianni, is accused of not fulffilling his marital duties: quite an original reversal that allows to take a critical and satirical look at Italian society.



9. The Bridge at Remagen (John Guillermin, 1969) 6
A decent WWII flick that occasionally highlights the nonsense of war although it is mainly fueled by pure action.



10. Vice and Virtue / Le Vice et la Vertu (Roger Vadim, 1963) 6+
A failed ambition to adapt Sade's Justine in a Nazi environment by lack of a stronger script. Deneuve, Girardot, Hossein and a good B&W cinematography are still well worth the watch.



11. The Structure of Crystal / Struktura krysztalu (Krzysztof Zanussi, 1969) 7
Quite an amazing debut where all Zanussi existentialist cinema is contained already. A little "New wave" generic at times.

13. Justine (George Cukor, 1969) 5-
It's a shame that a flamboyant novel such as Durrell's Alexandria Quartet was butchered in this lousy adaptation: it is filled with shots that have more to do with touristic advertising than cinema while it only emphasizes the debauchery of the city and has nothing of the subtelty and complexity of human relationships portrayed in the book. The cast was right though, except maybe Anna Karina as Melissa.



14. Scattered Clouds / Midaregumo (Mikio Naruse, 1967) 7
The outline can sound like a heavy melodrama but as always Naruse elevate it to fundamental humanism where two human just have to find their own ways to cope with tragedy.

Here's what I've seen from this decade so far this year. Not a lot, and nothing really outstanding. But a lot of it was great fun!

A trio of luchadore fun from Mexican director Rene Cardona:
Doctor of Doom; aka: Las luchadoras contra el medico asesino (1963, Rene Cardona, 79 m.) 7+
Wrestling Women vs. the Aztec Mummy (1964, Rene Cardona, 89 m.) 7
Santo contra Capulina (1969, Rene Cardona, 77 m.) 6

By far the weakest of the seven Carol Reed films I've watched this year, but in general, his American films are not as finely crafted as his work in the UK:
The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965, Carol Reed, 138 m.) 6+

One of the weakest of the Honda Godzillas, but I've never been able to see his orginal cut of this one and that might be up to his usual:
King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963, Ishiro Honda, Tom Montgomery, 97 m.) 5+

I agree this one is pretty weak as per my rewatch a few years ago. When I saw it as a kid it annoyed me because I was a huge 'Zilla fan and he's made the aggressor in this, despite the fact that Kong does visibly more damage over the course of the film (stomping on entire houses on a tirade across the city, etc).

The Americanized scenes all felt very flat, and why, why would anyone replace Akira Ifukube's score with something else? I wish that Criterion had made more of an effort to include the original Japanese version in their Showa Era set.

This was not my first viewing of this version. I had just received the Criterion set for my birthday and wanted to share one of the films in it with my son who is 7 1/2 and not quite up to reading subtitles yet (he does fine with intertitles in silent films so he is close) so I chose this one since we had seen the new version together last year in a cinema. He's already got three or so other dubbed Showa era Godzilla films under his belt and although he was very intent for those, I could tell that his attention wandered a lot in this one which also turned out to be even more frustrating to me than I remembered.

I hope that Criterion set is as awesome as it looks (aside from the flub with Kong v. Zilla)! Plus I love it when someone posts about watching movies with their kids; it's interesting to see what the young-uns are being exposed to... in this case maybe a more forgettable movie for your son, but sometimes they stick well and good in the noggin.

The set is quite beautiful. It's so tall I have not figured out where to keep it, but all the new artwork is gorgeous and I'm glad it's that big. I still have not watched any more of the films because I want to share them with my son and we only have one movie watching day a month - with occasional bonuses! I would gladly watch more with him (my wish list of films for us to watch is at least twice as long as what we have seen and it grows as he gets older and I add appropriate titles) but my wife feels very strongly about limiting his screen time. She is also a Godzilla fan and has joined us on a few of our movie adventures. My son and I take equal parts in choosing what we watch although I definitely have a great deal of influence over his choices. He often sets the theme and I suggest the movies. So far I have not worked in a Jess Franco (LOL) but I do try to provide a wide range of appropriate films and try to stay more focused on older ones. Aside from a dozen or so Mr. Rogers episodes, here's the complete list of what we have seen together if you are interested:

And yes, movies stick in his noggin. He will recall individual scenes months, even years later, sometimes with greater clarity than I have after multiple viewings. We usually make the whole day centered around the movies, with costumes, Lego constructions (we've built several Castle Frankensteins!), and other playtime that relates to the theme. We've also read several novels that the films we watched were based on. We read (or listened to) at least 8-9 different permutations of War of the Worlds, including Wells' original and he requests the rock opera version narrated by Richard Burton at least once a month. Burrough's Tarzan is another one he frequently revisits too, especially the gorgeously illustrated Hogarth version, but sometimes the original novel. It's FUN!!! Especially seeing old favorites through a fresh set of young eyes.

My mom used to also limit my screen time as a kid; I had to choose between creature double feature on Saturday afternoon and Sat morning cartoons: she wouldn't let me watch both. Weekdays it was usually the Muppet Show and Wild World of Animals, which was a 30min weekday doc shown on PBS. Back in those days limiting screen with kids was waaaaay simpler! No internet, thus no phones, no computers, no streaming; no cable TV, and no rental tapes (and no way to record anything) when I was younger. We only had a 13" BW TV that my mom used to store in the closet until I was 11 or so. There are things I prefer about that low-fidelity actually...

When you do look through that list you'll see my son has already watched a lot of creature features and "Saturday morning cartoons" with me! He's already a Scooby-Doo fan! I remember Wild World of Animals. During the pandemic, my son has often had to come to the library with me while his mom is also at work and he has watched a few documentaries similar to Wild World on a laptop in my office. That's also where we would watch Mr. Rogers together when he was there and it was time for my lunch break. In a sense our set-up at home is not unlike the one you describe as a child. We don't have internet - we live remotely enough that it is not available without costing a nice chunk of change. We also don't have a TV in the house - but there are two in the garage - one in front of the treadmill and the other in my space which is a sizable room above the garage. That's also where i keep my sizable DVD collection and all my books and comics so it's almost like another world when we go there to watch movies together.

As a pre VHS kid, I had no TV restrictions, other than what was available on the 5 channels (there was a sixth one but it was largely religious programming and was always skipped over except for the occasional episode of Davey & Goliath). My mom introduced me to a lot of horror, suspense and thrillers and I watched a lot of westerns and comedies with my dad. I even had a color TV in my room before my parents got one in the living room thanks to my grandma who lived with us. My wife had a much more restricted childhood and she worries if I was given free rein to indoctrinate our son into movies then he would end up being a movie fanatic like me! My secret plan is to make him one anyway by showing him all the good stuff!

I thought some of you might appreciate this short film, for being oh-so very 60s




Good Strong Coffee (1968)
Its a wild psychedelic party where the drug of choice is…. coffee. Turns out this is an advertisement for coffee. No brand in particular, just coffee. Here it’s being sold as a way to prolong your party, maybe even spike it with whiskey. I like that psychedelia had become this mainstream, that it can be safe and fun, where at worst, people are just drinking coffee. There’s also this weird addiction enabling line of, “the more you use, the more you get back,” – as though there isn’t any downside to overconsuming it. Coffee is rather weird – it’s a stimulant, a drug that a majority of the world depends on each day, yet nobody ever thinks of it that way – its just so commonly acceptable that most don’t even think of it as a drug. I am sensitive to caffeine, and one of my medications even has an interaction with caffeine, so coffee isn’t exactly harmless – it is addictive and it is possible to overdose on caffeine. As someone who doesn’t like coffee, it is strange to observe the world around me and wonder why this is the thing that everyone’s so behold to. But I also have an illness which necessitates the use of heavy tranquilizers, so I’m not exactly one to judge normal humans’ baseline energy, even though I’m still annoyed when the party ends due to people’s need for sleep. Anyway, this is a fun commercial – which may be very of its particular moment in time, but I think one can easily appreciate a mod acid trip ode to coffee.
