As corpses start turning up liquefied and drained of all bones, this Terence Fisher horror film gets off to an intriguing start. Even more interesting is the opening scene in which we see a scientist working on what he believes could be a cure for cancer. How are these two plot threads related? The answer sadly disappoints. The film also spends more time on the characters discussing what to do than doing anything, but Peter Cushing is totally on board.

19. Transformers (2007, Michael Bay) rewatch: 7.5 > 6.5
20. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009, Michael Bay) rewatch: 6.5 > 3.5
21. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011, Michael Bay) rewatch: 3.5 > 5.2
22. Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014. Michael Bay): 4.0
23. Transformers: The Last Knight (2017, Michael Bay): 4.5

Transformers
Robots in disguise....

Since all entries have basically the same problems, flaws and merits in various degrees (my ratings show which ones suffer or benefit from which the most) I‘m doing an overall review of the series. First of I’m no Bay hater tho also not his biggest fan. I really liked a few and most others are enjoyable enough (Helps maybe I haven’t seen one his most hated, Pearl Harbor, yet). It might be a controversial remark, but Bay’s direction itself isn’t the biggest problem with the series. His ADHD tendencies might annoy some, but at least it keeps the pace up and keeps them from becoming complete snoozefests. Plus during the action scenes they do work in creating a feeling of mayhem.

The biggest problem clearly is the writing. All of these movies are overlong, bloated, drawn out and too convoluted. With the Transformers themselves still lacking any recognizable individualities despite the more than 2.5 hours runtimes. Only three, Bumblebee, Optimus and Megatron have a resemblances of a personality. What these movies needed above all is a good script doctor, someone who with a big red pen just crossed of big chunks in the scripts with all the unnecessary parts and characters to reduce the runtime and tighten the plot. Cause my god, how easily you could remove and reduce large parts of these to make it all tighter and better, f.e. the first one spends a half hour! just to get some glasses from Shia’s home, with some cringeworthy humor to boot. The Last Knight has a scene with Megatron negotiating the release of fellow Decepticons, which introduces new cool looking villians. Only firstly these new robots barely appear in the movie afterwards and secondly Megatron himself isn’t the main baddy of this one even. Another 15 minutes that should been removed cause they add nothing to the plot.

Also needed is shifting and keeping the focus to where it needs to be; the human hero as viewer proxy and the Autobots. Example; the Last Knight introduces a new young girl, which could have worked with shifting the whole series into a new family friendly direction if she was made the focus point of the whole movie, but the way she is used now she just hangs around Wahlberg the rest of the movie as unnecessary weight for the plot, so could and should been deleted.

With better writing when the action comes we would actually care about what happens to the characters and get why they are fighting at all. Age of Extinction, which start of as a promising reboot of the franchise with Mark Wahlberg replacing Shia LaBeouf is a prime example of this. Crash summary: Transformers are viewed as hostile and unwelcome by the human governments and therefor hunted. Marky Mark discovers an old truck, that surprise… is Optimus Prime. Human black ops team attacks them. Meanwhile some scientists are using death Transformers to make new ones as weapons. Heroes find out about this. They attack the facility to rescue their comrades. Cloned new Transformer is actually Megatron. More fighting.... End? If the movie had ended there it would have had a more comprehensible plot in which it’s clear who the good and bad guys are and what they motivations and aims are. But alas the movie goes on for another hour at least, with bad guys suddenly becoming good guys, the robot hitman kidnapping Mark’s daughter and everyone moving to China… because of the Chinese blockbuster market? In short I have no idea why anyone did anything in this last part of this movie. In contrast Dark of the Moon is one of the better ones, cause in the last hour of action there is a clear objective with obstacles and stakes. Not that there isn't enough death weight that could been cut to trim this one down too.

Next to this big problem these movies also suffer from the same flaws, that if the whole movies were better would be irritating faults already. But in these messes just add extra to the irksomeness. I’m talking about the machismo, sexism, the cringeworthy humor, obnoxious characters and unnecessary romance subplots.

Because of the huge budgets and Bay directions all movies do offer moments of pure blockbuster entertainment. Seeing Optimus riding a Dinobot in Age of Extinction or Optimus fighting Megatron and Starscream in Revenge of the Fallen is almost worth the admission alone. Yes, I like giant robots bounding away into each other. If you don’t I have no idea why you would actually check out these movies in the first place. It is the horrible writing surrounding the action that makes them, while being impressive and occasional exciting, soulless, mindnumbing and tedious.

8. The Bed Sitting Room (1969) - 4.8/10 #PostNuke

Set in post-nuclear-holocaust England, where a handful of bizarre characters struggle on with their lives in the ruins, amongst endless heaps of ash, piles of broken crockery and brick, muddy plains, and heaps of dentures and old boots.

98. The Meteor Man (Robert Townsend, 1993)
I have a vague memory of watching this a LONG time ago but remembered nothing about it. On a rewatch, I've determined it's pretty bad. The jokes are really obvious. The script and character motivations make no sense most of the time. This just felt like something Robert Townsend threw together on a cocktail napkin over lunch.

ImageImageImage
99. Pleasure Maze (Duck Dumont, 1986)
100. Fantasyworld (Bob Chinn, Jeffrey Fairbanks, 1979)
101. China Lust (Summer Brown, 1976)
Here we have a trio of adult films about fantasies becoming reality (a popular theme in porn not surprisingly). Pleasure Maze involves a futuristic society where sex androids grant people their every want and need. It's vaguely competent for what it is, but I would've like to have seen more of the actual retro-future stuff. Fantasyworld is about a night club magician who can actually perform real magic, and naturally uses it in service of perversity. This one actually probably has the highest production values of the three but is still little more than a mild curiosity. China Lust involves a magic dildo that makes people instantly horny or something. This one is by far the lowest budget and laziest and offers only the bare minimum of what's expected in this kind of movie.

Image
102. Alien Nation (Graham Baker, 1988)
I remember watching the TV series based on this with my stepdad back in the day but never watched the original movie. Like the TV show, it's basically a mismatched buddy cop movie laced with some social commentary with James Cann as the tough-as-nails, racist human and Mandy Patinkin as the straight-laced new alien partner. It's fine for what it is but isn't revolutionary by any means.

Image
103. The Philadelphia Experiment (Paul Ziller, 2012) #TimeAfterTime
Well, this was bad. This is pretty much exactly what you'd expect of a ScyFy remake of a movie about a time-traveling naval destroyer with like a 4th of the original budget. Super cheesy with some pretty bad acting and dialogue.

Image
104. They Came from Beyond Space (Freddie Francis, 1967)
This weak body snatcher-esque film from Amicus and normally competent British director Freddie Francis was mostly just super boring and extremely slow-paced.

Image
105. City of Angels (Brad Siberling, 1998)
Brad Siberling (director of Casper and Land of the Lost) is no Wim Wenders.

Image
106. Krakatit (Otakar Vávra, 1948)
I quite liked this oddball psychological thriller.

I had the reverse experience. I saw the movie in the theater when it came out and enjoyed it, but not really enough to watch the tv series. The tv show aired during my sophomore year of college and I wasn't watching too many shows that year since I was busy with classes and work. I'll probably get around to watching the tv show some day, though, perhaps even later this month if I can fit it in.

128-133 - Star Cops (1987) Episodes 101-109 (461 minutes plus 19 minutes carried over from before, 2 remaining) - This series takes place in the distant future year of 2027 where they have Moon bases, expeditions to Mars, regular shuttle services into space, etc. This is a police procedural with a lot of the action in space and the space parts seem somewhat realistic, especially considering when it was made. The show got a bit more interesting as it went along, but overall is fairly average.

134 - Star Trek The Animated Series (1973) Episodes 101-104 (97 minutes with 17 to carry forward) - I rewatched The Original Series in order last year and enjoyed them quite a bit. I had originally watched them in weekend syndication back in the late 70s. Now it's time to rewatch The Animated Series which I remember as also being a fun show. The first four episodes didn't disappoint. I'll probably move on to The Next Generation at some point this year and then the other shows.

I'm not going to count my minutes and have them carry over and get magic points, because I'm above that sort of thing. But we did watch two Star Trek episodes, so I'll count those when combined.

05. Star Trek Deep Space 9: Return to Grace (1995) + Star Trek Voyager: Non Sequitur (1996)

06. Six-String Samurai (1998) #Hilarious - Rating: 3/10
Somebody out there really wanted this aesthetic: a 1950s post-apocalypse world of guitars and sword fighting random tattered desert rats. Of course there’s also an obnoxious kid who spends the entire film going WAHHH + needing rescuing every other minute. Our hero, Buddy, acts as the kid’s caretaker throughout the movie – the thankless sacrifice of life and happiness, just for the duty of someone’s wellbeing. They’re headed to the mythical land of Lost Vegas, which stands out like a utopia against the rubble – as some last bastion of civilization. For the desert is a place filled with hearty souls, where just existence, however meager, stands as a triumph against the odds. It reminds me of battling an illness – where just surviving is enough of an accomplishment. But Buddy exists as a deity amongst the pretenders to the throne of Lost Vegas – for he can calmly walk head-first into an entire army of baddies and somehow know that his superior skills will leave him unscathed. For he can just do some martial arts and brain people with his sword/guitar combo and just carry on unphased, at least until he has to rescue the kid once more. Anyway, I appreciate that this is a desert of remnants of humanity, but I could never get behind the atmosphere the film creates, but maybe you’ll like it better than we did.

I keep meaning to check this out. I've heard more than once that it's a solid watch. I've also heard good things about the new animated one Lower Decks.

108-114. Suzumiya Haruhi no yûutsu a.k.a. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Tatsuya Ishihara, 2006) E1-28
The first season of this was pretty solid, involving a strong-willed girl who has the ability to unknowingly shape reality around her. The second season is rightfully looked on less favorably. Half of it is taken up with the "endless eight". A series of nearly identical episodes where Haruhi traps she and her friends in an endless time loop because of her dissatisfaction with not finishing everything she wanted to complete during summer vacation. Honestly though, it's not as bad as it sounds. I actually thought it was kinda interesting observing the subtle ways that the situations would slightly differ from episode to episode. The rest of the season is kind of a mish mash of what feels like outtakes from the first season, smaller self contained stories and one longer arc where the gang makes a movie. It's entertaining but none of it feels essential and it doesn't really forward the character development in any meaningful way. Overall it's a decent series that just has too much filler.

Image
115. Robot & Frank (Jake Schreier, 2012)
I liked this one. Frank Langella was great as an elderly ex-con who is gifted a robot from his grown son as a kind of companion to take care of him as he succumbs to the ravages of age. It's a charming, whimsical movie and while it rarely feels truly meaningful, it's a nice character study.

Image
116. La freccia d'oro a.k.a. The Golden Arrow (Antonio Margheriti, 1962)
From Italian gothic horror maestro Antonio Margheriti comes a more light-hearted fantasy adventure about a thief who wins the hand of a princess in marriage with the aid of three silly genies by firing the golden arrow from a magical seemingly unbendable bow. This one is pretty obviously trying to capitalize off the popularity of Harryhausen's Sinbad with its genies, magic carpet rides and an upstart rapscallion getting into and out of various fantastical scapes. It's okay as light entertainment but isn't something I'll probably revisit any time soon, and is definitely a far cry from Margheriti's best.

Image
117. Nightmare Weekend (Henri Sala, 1986)
Man, this was a weird goofy ass movie.... I don't even know where to begin...

Image
118. Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Andy Serkis, 2021)
Meh...This was a disappointment on pretty much all fronts. It's WAY sillier than the first one, especially in the first half. They turned Venom into a needy, butthurt primadonna. Something about the way Woody Harrelson played Carnage didn't work for me either. Just the whole idea of trying to make Carnage sympathetic is antithetical to the character whose whole thing is that it's a vicious, unstoppable killing machine with no sense of remorse. Also Shriek was pretty much totally pointless.

Image
119-120. Moondial (Colin Cant, 1988)
This was a pretty solid BBC miniseries about a girl who travels back in time using a mysterious sundial. The later plot "twists" aren't exactly revelatory and the production values are typical BBC TV mini-series quality from the '80s, but I think it's still worth watching for fans of British children's fantasy like The Owl Service.

Poor Australia, trailing behind... Perhaps people got burned out on Australian films last month?

As an atheist, I have to admit that I really enjoyed the fact that this was an extremely popular movie in India. In a setup reminiscent of "The Invention of Lying", this is the story of an alien who comes to Earth and has a hard time understanding the concepts and message of religion until he figures out what lying is. It's a rebuke of religiousness, but it's a satirical rebuke. I admit I did spend most of the movie annoyed at Aamir Khan's exaggerated weirdness.

Around halfway in, this romantic drama introduces a fantasy element as three characters return as ghosts to watch over and guide two young lovers. While the dissolve-heavy effects for these parts are well done, the men are far too passive as ghosts and do not really seem to influence any of the events that unfold. And the events that do unfold mostly feel melodramatic with tired morality/success ideas. The three men are fun and eccentric though.

I think TAS is slightly underrated, as a series (maybe not necessarily as a continuation of TOS). There are some "throw away" eps, but many of them have cool visuals/design and the stories aren't bad, for the most part; like the very first one, Beyond the Farthest Star, with the pod-design stuff...
I keep meaning to check this out. I've heard more than once that it's a solid watch. I've also heard good things about the new animated one Lower Decks.
Haven't seen Lower Decks either, yet, though I prob will at some point. Heck, I haven't even seen DS9 yet. It's my only other unseen Trek series aside from Discovery (not exactly in a major hurry for that one)...

I watched the first season of Lower Decks back in September and thought it was pretty funny. I watched the first 2-3 seasons of DS9 when they first aired, but grew bored with the series and stopped watching, though I started watching again during the last couple of seasons. I've enjoyed Discovery quite a bit. I think that the second season is the best so far, but the first and third seasons were pretty good.

32. Girl From Nowhere: JennyX (2021) * 49 min.
Girl From Nowhere: The Judgement (2021) * 43 min.
The introduction of Yuri as a friend/rival to Nanno in Season 2 added a bit of complexity, but with these last two episodes the series seems to have lost its way, with Nanno arranging the comeuppance of a girl who really was just trying to lead a normal life, and a showdown between the violent methods of Yuri and the karma/poetic justice of Nanno.

peeptoad wrote: January 21st, 2022, 10:15 am Haven't seen Lower Decks either, yet, though I prob will at some point.
I used to really like Next Generation back in the day and was excited about DS9 but like you I got bored with it fairly fast. It has a kind of passivity to it that made it feel same-y.

Do ICM Members dream of official checks
1. Daredevil (Mark Steven Johnson 2003) 2/10
2. Elysium (Neil Blomkamp 2013) 5/10
3. The Inhuman Woman (Marcel L'Herbier 1924) 8.3/10
3.5. The Witcher S1 E1 5.5/10
4. The Witcher S1 E2 3/10
5. Good Manners (Marco Dutra, Juliana Rojas 2017) 6.8/10
6. Kiki's Delivery Service (Hayao Miyazaki 1989) 8/10
7. The Witcher S1 E3 6/10
8. The Withcer S1 E4 4/10
9. The Aerial (Esteban Sapir 2007) 5/10
9.5. The Witcher S1 E5 7/10
10. The Witcher S1 E6 5.5/10
11. Evil Dead (Fede Alvarez 2013) 5(5.5)/10
12-14. Attack on titan S1 E1-E12 8.5/10 Rewatch
Much more simpler than the later seasons. The question is if its better that way or not? It becomes clear that much of the groundwork was already present in the beginning.

Unlike some, I'm clearly not above counting minutes for magic points so I'll keep on doing just that.

135-139 - Star Trek The Animated Series (1973) Episodes 105-206 (431 minutes with 31 to carry forward) - Too bad the second season was so short. I would have enjoyed having more episodes to watch.

140-143 - The Tripods Series 1 (1984) (321 minutes) - I read John Christopher's Tripods series a long time ago and I recall enjoying them, though not as much as some of his other series. This seems to be a decent adaptation, though it moved so slowly at first, I wasn't sure whether I'd continue with it or not. In 2089, humans are 'capped' when they come of age to keep them relatively docile, especially toward their alien Tripod rulers. Two English boys run away to avoid capping and go in search a fabled area of free men. It became more interesting once they got to France and picked up the third member of their party. The first series adapts the first book in the trilogy.

144-149 - The Survivors (1975) Episodes 101-109 (447 minutes plus 33 minutes carried over from before, 18 remaining) - A pandemic swiftly goes through the world and kills off 99.98% of the population. A small part of the population is either naturally immune to the disease or catches it and survives. There is plenty of food and clothing that can be scavenged for now, but the survivors will have to use (and possibly relearn) certain skills in order to survive long term. It's a decent show that lasted for three seasons plus two seasons in the 2000s of a new version of the show.

51. Dracula's Daughter (1936)

Gloria Holden excels here and makes the film very much her own; this is a decidedly different film to the original in the best possible way. Especially well done is her internal strife, desiring to no longer be a vampire but often weak-willed and unable to resist the urge. Edward Van Sloan also gets a better chance to make more of his Van Helsing. Everybody else though feels pitifully miscast and all the scenes without them fall flat. Weird comic relief too.

21. The Vast of Night (2019)
An excellent extraterrestrial thriller that thrives on long dialogue-driven scenes without losing any sense of dramatic urgency. And despite the low budget, there are plenty of atmospheric touches thanks to long tracking shots and the eerie sound design.

The aliens looked silly to me, and the miniature effects and matte paintings were weak, but the story, acting and writing were good. A very good job considering the obviously low budget.

121. The Specials (Craig Mazin, 2000)
Not bad but wildly uneven superhero comedy penned by James Gunn right after his stint at Troma (and it shows). The cast is damned good though with the likes of Thomas Hayden Church, Rob Lowe, Judy Greer and even James Gunn himself. It's biggest weakness is actually the directing from Mazin who's only other directing since this movie has been Superhero Movie and uh... yea... (Although fun fact, he's also the asshole tester Lou in Mythic Quest and is pretty funny there, so maybe he should stick to acting?). Anyway, for big fans of James Gunn (whose brother Sean also stars here), you might find this entertaining to see some of the genesis of his ideas around making superhero flicks laced with comedy and bitter irony.

Image
122. Saint Bernard (Gabriel Bartalos, 2013)
What the ever living fuck was this?

Image
123. The Man from Earth: Holocene (Richard Schenkman, 2017)
Bleh...The first Man from Earth was way too long and overly talky, feeling like a filmed stage play but at least it had interesting ideas courtesy of renowned sci-fi writer Jerome Bixby. This wildly unnecessary sequel basically just rehashes the points from the first one but with a "hip young" new cast while also throwing in a dumb ending. Total waste of time.

Image
124-126. Masters of Science Fiction E1-6 (2007)
This series was a kind of spin-off of the acclaimed Showtime series Masters of Horror but with a lot less star power. Instead of handing over the reigns for titans of sci-fi filmmakers to do whatever they wanted, the title here is justified by each of the six stories adapted being done by a master of the sci-fi novel such as Robert Heinlein and Robert Sheckley. The results are a highly mixed bag. The budgets look extremely low with the results looking like ultra cheap TV (think ScyFy originals from the '90s). The quality of writing is fairly hit or miss too. Three out of the six of these shorts deal directly with meting out justice in a futuristic society and most of them use VERY limited location work and actors for what I assume are also cost-cutting measures. Still, it's not a total failure as some of the original stories adapted from are solid enough that a straight adaptation is still worth a watch even with such lackluster production values.

Image
127. Brain of Blood (Al Adamson, 1971)
Good ol' Al Adamson gettin' his mad science on again...

Image
128. Nazareno Cruz y el lobo (Leonardo Favio, 1975) #SouthAmerica
This was a strange sort of dark fairy tale from Argentina... It very much feels like something Mondo Macabro would put out if anyone understands what that means.

Image
129. Gagamboy (Erik Matti, 2004)
Here we've got a super silly Filipino superhero comedy that seems to be kind of a Spider-man parody about a guy getting superpowers from eating radioactive bugs. It's pretty damn dumb but kind of entertaining in a shut-off-your-brain way.

ImageImage
130a. ABC Weekend Specials: Ralph S. Mouse (Thomas G. Smith, 1991)
130b. La Frecuencia Kirlian a.k.a. The Kirlian Frequency E1-6 (Cristian Ponce, 2017)
The third Ralph S. Mouse special was really more of the same from the first one. Nothing more, nothing less. The Kirlian Frequency was a pretty strange short Argentine animated series on Netflix that's premise is basically a radio show structured around bizarre phenomena like vampires and werewolves. It was actually pretty good with a neat art style despite the limited animation.

Image
131. The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (Terry Gilliam, 2018)
This one took Gilliam so long to get made I thought it fitting that it take me several years to get around to watching it despite my general enjoyment of everything Gilliam does. The result? Well, it really is kind of an uneven mess of a movie but Jonathan Pryce and Adam Driver are both great. While it isn't one of Gilliam's best, I thought it still had enough going for it to check out and was glad I watched it finally.

I don't remember ever seeing this or even hearing about this. Stars that later went onto acclaim (Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix), a recognizable director, a Spieblergian story of young boys finding solace and companionship in technology and each other in a world with disappointing role models and bullying peers? Shouldn't this have been a staple in my upbringing?

Then about two thirds of the way through I figure out why nobody would recommend this. It's also why I don't recommend it.
