4. Somewhere in the Night (1946)
★ ★ ★ - Very Good
Further proof that as I get older, I'm more comfortable rating things that I like higher. The amnesia premise will always start the eyes rolling and some of the dialogue is over-written, especially around the middle, but the mystery is laid out like an escape room, where each clue is a puzzle and each puzzle reveals the next clue. Maybe I'd think less if this didn't have Richard Conte and Lloyd Nolan - two of my absolute favorites - but it does in these perfect small amounts, and they share the screen too. The exchange may not be Pacinno/De Niro in Heat, but it's almost as good to me.

5. After Midnight with Boston Blackie (1943)
★ ★ ★ - Okay
Light as they are, I mostly enjoy this series starring Chester Morris. I stopped after I saw one with a lengthy, terrible blackface routine. There's some here too, but it's over as soon as it starts, and the rest of the film is one of the best of the series. Anyone who watches because Ann Savage is in the cast is bound to be disappointed by her lack of bark.

A very curious remake. Paul Kersey is a doctor in this version and thus able to take care of his wounds. There is also a social media angle this time round, but the best change is how this is always a pure revenge tale. Whereas the original became more about Bronson egging on/entrapping would-be muggers in order to have an excuse to kill them, here Kersey is focused on tracking his wife's killers - however I disliked the even greater focus on the cops this time.

20. They Live by Night (1948) - 7/10 #CathyO'Donnell
21. Born to Kill (1947) - 6/10 #ClaireTrevor

22. Brute Force (1947) - 7/10 #YvonneDeCarlo

My 4th Yvonne De Carlo film, but really she, and all the other actresses, only have very small bit roles in this since it is a male prison movie. Nothing overly special, a pretty run of the mill escape movies, but that is mainly because it helped set that standard so that is something in its favour.

Image

23. The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946) - 8/10 #BarbaraStanwyck

Barbara Stanwyck is a name I know quite well having seen 5 of her movies before this one, and not a bad one among them. This one continued the trend of quality movies that had me interested from the getgo with some good acting by the teens playing the main characters early in life (and what a major turn in character Martha Ivers had from a teen to Stanwyck). The movie also had a nice fitting ending compared to what are most of the forced endings that the other Noirs I have seen this month have had.

Image

24. Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) - 7/10 #GeneTierney

Well we are definitely getting further into the big name Femme Fatales now with Gene Tierney being one of the biggest names I can think of. While I have a couple of hers I didn't enjoy in the 6 I had watched previously overall it has been a good experience. This one ended up on the good side as well with a fairly good story. Not the strongest this month but pretty reasonable.

Image

25. Suspicion (1941) - 6/10 #JoanHarrison

I am always up for a new Hitchcock and Joan Harrison being a producer/screenwriter for him helped give me a new one here. Unfortunately for all the names involved here this fell really flat. The potential was there but the suspense was just not what the story required.

Image

26. Whistle Stop (1946) - 4/10 #AvaGardner

Even the greatest Actresses have bad days, and unfortunately for Ava Gardener this was the 2nd of my 3 watches that wasn't very great. In fact this was the lowest point of this challenge for me. This movie just never flowed well at all which had me zoning in and out quite often as it failed to excite.

3. Memories of Murder (Bong-Joon-Ho 2003) Rewatch 10/10 --> 10/10
Watching this a second time it becomes apparent that the main villain isn't the serial killer, but the system itself. Not much a surprise that Bong was already political back then. We are presented with a police department that lacks education, ressources, technology, which could have helped finding the killer. All the dead women are in many ways blood on the government hands, which had its fair share of difficulties after the military coup in 1980.

The second relevant theme is the loss of the soul, when confronted with true evil. The detective from Seoul starts off as a fact based guy reminiscent of a more a american approach to detective work, but as the film reaches it's climax, he loses
Spoiler
his principles and values, willing to kill the guy he is certain to be the killer,
. The other guy starts off as a smart ass, very confident guy, with nice kicking skills, which are all gone by the end (except his kicking skills). My favorite Bong Joon Ho film, and marginally better than Parasite

4. Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcook 1958) Rewatch 9.5/10 --> 9.0/10
One of the first classic films i saw, when Netflix released globally back in 2012. I forgot how dreamlike the film is, especially in the first half where colour motives are very present with the colour red and especially green to symbolise the mental state of Old Stewart. This is very rare today, and would probably be seen as amateurish (except maybe guys such as Tarantino). There seems to be some issues regarding gender dynamics, which were present at the times, but is escalated in this film. Besides the stalking and the age difference, Stewart throughout the movie plays around with the different women as much as he wants. It's very much a male fantasy, trying to create the ideal woman portrayed by Kim Novak shadow character. He has no interest in the real Novak and the other woman character, who somehow disappear halfway through the movie. It may be intentional, but it gives an odd taste through a modern perspective.
Only Colours Allowed

1. LA Confidental (Curtis Hanson 1997) Rewatch 9.5-->9.0
2. Frozen River (Courtney Hunt 2008) 7.2/10
3. Memories of Murder (Bong-Joon-Ho 2003) Rewatch 10/10 --> 10/10
4. Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcook 1958) Rewatch 9.5/10 --> 9.0/10

37. The Garment Jungle (1957) - An intriguing piece of work. The central crime/noir aspects I found to be a bit on the conventional side and a lot of the plot mechanics were fairly predictable, and while Lee J Cobb turned in a reliably commanding performance, I did find his character to be a bit thinly drawn, despite arguably being the protagonist. And yet, everything involving unions and the commentary herein was rather engaging and dare I say, ahead of its time. So, a mixed leaning towards positive reaction from me.

41. Victim (1961) 100 min.
Terrific performance by Dirk Bogarde in a movie in which the detective investigating the case acknowledges that because of the the British law criminalizing homosexual acts, the victims have as much or more to lose from a prosecution as the criminals.

42. Backfire (1950) * 91 min.
Too by the numbers for me. Baby-faced Gordon MacRae, just out of the hospital, is better at routine police work than the detectives investigating the case, the questioning of every witness leads to a flash back and the motive turns out not to be the obvious motive that everyone assumed from the start. It becomes obvious that Lou Walsh is the killer because his face is never seen in the flashbacks, and when you realize that, you know who he has to be. It could be that I'm jaded by the number of noirs that I'm watching this month, or because I find Dane Clark and Edmond O'Brien (except in D.O.A.) to be among the least charismatic actors in noir, but I think it's likely that the filmmakers set out to make the most formulaic noir that they could and unfortunately succeeded. It was okay and it was nice to see Virginia Mayo as a nice woman.

This begins well as a snazzy dresser breaks into Mozart's apartment, kidnaps him and interrogates him about issues that he knows nothing about. Things only get more interesting as he escapes and goes to the police who promptly handcuff him to a chair and accuse him of murder. Alas, after this Kafkaesque start the film begins to fall apart. Rather than focus on the mystery, the film devolves into his hazy memories and his attempts to woo back his ex-wife.

43. Someone to Watch Over Me (1987) * 106 min.
Good, except for the ridiculous romance which was the reason for the movie's existence. Tom Berenger is quite likable, despite the many stupid things that the script has his character do, and there are several very good action scenes. The reason for the release of the killer after his initial arrest was stupider than any of the romance.

The first 35 minutes work best here with the wife disappearing and Kurt Russell trying to work out who to trust when asking for help (is it all in his mind?). The second half is not quite as effective as a mystery thriller with everything spelled out, but this section has several outstanding action scenes. Most notable are Russell's attempts to climb up/over a moving truck and a three vehicle road pursuit. Riveting and intense stuff with a superb J.T. Walsh turn.

44. Woman in Hiding (1950) * 92 min. #Ida Lupino
Ida Lupino is vulnerable and Stephen McNally ably goes from near normal to menacing in an instant. Solid noir with uncommon North Carolina and Tennessee settings.

6. Roaring City (1951)
★ ★ ½
I don't mind that this is two episodes of a limited run TV-Series stitched together to B-movie length. The crime stories are twisty fun and full of slick dialogue. The reason why I probably won't be watching the other two entries in the trilogy is a completely miscast Edward Brophy. Brophy is a legend in this house and after 48 films where he plays a variation of a dumb crook with a twinkle in his voice, he's cast here as "The Professor", speaking completely in low tones and using very big words. Compared to every other performance, here he's 'acting' and he's poorly suited to the character. Still enjoy watching him, but every time he opens his mouth it's a disappointment.

The plot feels very bare bones here (the main characters are not even named) but this only makes it more impressive how immersive the film is. Also curious is how Ryan O'Neal as The Driver is the ostensible bad guy, yet he has a code of conduct and always seems more honorable than the Detective. The dialogue-free opening pursuit is awesome too without O'Neal ever breaking a sweat and Hill's visuals are divine with pronounced aqua and turquoise hues.

This meanders a bit during its first half but really picks up in its second half as Penn's rival ends up getting sent to the same juvenile detention centre, leading to an inevitable confrontation. Speaking of which, the final fifteen minutes here are amazingly intense and well shot/edited. Eric Gurry also steals his every scene as Penn's clued-in cellmate. In fact, his whole (sadly unexplored) back-story is actually more intriguing than Penn's.

And that would finally get me a Bronze on the TSP 1000 Noirs list if the system wasn't broken. :rolleyes:

The individual heist scenes here are generally intense and clever, full of such novelties as hiding a gun in a coffee cup; the non-heist and non-scam scenes though do not really click. While Mamet is known for his sharp dialogue, many of the exchanges here fall flat ("that's why they call it money") and feel silly ("sheep count him") rather than witty. The characters are not particularly well developed either, which should have been a cinch. Solid performances tho.

Above all else, this is a very good-looking film with lots of graphic match editing, unusual steadicam shots and vertigo-inducing shots of spiral staircases. There are also several scenes that are creatively crafted to set the viewer on edge - most notably a visit to the patient's mother at night who seems to teleport while talking incoherently. Where the film ends up going though is sadly less interesting than the build-up to it. Still, this is daringly different.

23. Undertow (William Castle, 1949)
24. Out of the Past (Jacques Tourneur, 1947) (re-watch)
25. The Lawless (Joseph Losey, 1950)

Solid enough newspaper-noir, with MacDonald Carey as a crusading small-town editor in a border town who is forced into taking sides over a dispute between Mexican agricultural workers and the white town majority, meanwhile falling in love (perhaps) with the young Mexican-American journalist (Gail Russell, not the most Hispanic-looking actress they could have found I think) who is telling the story from the immigrants' point of view. It's interesting in that the crimes involved here are pretty small-scale - a young kid running from the law, punching a couple of people, stealing a car for a short time - but of course things escalate, and one could draw many comparisons with films about the early Civil Rights movement, and the way young black men often got railroaded into jail or nooses for nothing. Not that there aren't a few films about other American minorities of this sort, but they are relatively few and far between, and it's no surprise that the soon-to-be-blacklisted leftist director Losey would be at the helm here, or that writer Daniel Mainwaring - who also scripted the novel on which Out of the Past was based, and more importantly to the subject of this film, the screenplay to the somewhat thematically similar The Phenix City Story. This isn't on the level of those two films by a long shot - it feels a little thin, needs more development in several areas - but it's a solid enough film with a somewhat rare topic for the era.

26. Highway 301 (Andrew L. Stone, 1950)

Bank robbers led by psycho Steve Cochran, in one of his best roles, pull a string of jobs in North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia, with the cops on their trail in this very solid police procedural with seeming elements of the docudrama - the governors of the three states in question appear at the opening to tell us how crime is always punished and the cops with their modern techniques are always going to win, etc; but this seems to be a publicity stunt as the film is apparently an original screenplay by the director. Weird. Anyway Cochran and his gang pull off one heist after another, with the leader in particular always willing to resort to violence - particularly when women are concerned. This is fairly tough by 1950 standards, which is probably a part of what makes in rather memorable, and use of some real locations in NC help as well.

27. Sensualidad (Alberto Gout, 1951)
28. Camino del infierno / The Road to Hell (Miguel Morayta, 1951)

Last year when we did both Mexico and noir at the same time, I planned to watch a whole bunch of Mexican noir, including several rumberas, a unique Mexican genre that is sort of a cross between dance-oriented musical, film noir, and melodrama; the only one I actually got to was Gout's Aventurera, starring the Cuban-born Ninón Sevilla, and it knocked my socks off, so here I go with a couple more examples - well, one for sure; the second film isn't listed as a rumberas anywhere that I can tell, but it does have several musical numbers and much melodrama - and certainly both films count as noir in my book.

Image

Sensualidad re-unites director and star from Aventurera, but at first it seems of much less interest. I suppose in part it's the hoary old story - young woman seduces middle-aged man, ruins his life, etc - and the fact that the middle-aged man, a judge (Fernando Soler) who had put our femme fatale (Sevilla) in jail for a couple of years - her seduction is entirely revenge-based it seems - is somewhat unconvincing in his turn to the dark side. This isn't Soler's fault, the screenplay I think just makes things a bit too black-and-white at first. But the film improves a lot in it's last act especially, in which a delirious succession of crosses, double-crosses, and seductions real and imagined leads to a wonderfully over-the-top murderous ending. I still prefer Aventurera, but it's clear to me after a couple of films that Gout was a master of putting together complicated plots in spicy, sexy and crime-fraught situations, and I'll have to be looking for more.

Camino del infierno benefits from the great Pedro Armendáriz, as a simple guy who gets put in the wrong place at the wrong time, thinking he's just helping out, and winds up in a love-hate relationship with Leticia Palma, the femme fatale who turned her lovers against each other and is now left with this schlub. Like the previous film, this takes some fascinating twists and turns, and saying much would be spoiling it, though overall it's a less interesting ride as the middle part of the two protagonists getting to know each other and bickering - and then falling in love for no particularly believable reason - is a bit dull. But again the third act redeems and this ends with an even more ridiculous and overheated climax than Sensualidad, so it's all worth it in the end.

29. Insurance Investigator (George Blair, 1951)

A businessman is waiting for the elevator to take him down several floors at the end of a long day; when it doesn't show up, he starts down the stairs...only to be brutally murdered! That's the opening scene of this brisk hour-long story so you know what you're getting into right away. It appears to be an accident...but the insurance company which will be in for hundreds of thousands isn't so sure, so they send an investigator (Richard Denning, dull enough to be perfect for this role, but not so dull as to be unwatchable) who focuses on the dead man's business partner, and his daughter, who seem to get along OK but...it's soon clear that one or the other of them is behind it all. And behind THAT person is syndicate leader Reed Hadley, the real reason to watch this, always great in villainous role and with a voice I'd pay to hear read the phone book. This is a fun little flick with nothing really new to offer but good pacing and a solid enough cast dominated by Hadley, and it's another example of why I have the rule that noirs that are job titles are nearly always worth seeing.

Accidentally pressed edit rather than create new post and deleted my review for this. Too bad. Don't feel like reposting. Mediocre film.

This is not a movie to be taken too seriously; it has been described as Bugs Bunny with guns and that sounds about right with Clive Owen constantly chewing on carrots and using them as makeshift weapons; Paul Giamatti even calls him a "wascally wabbit" at one point. Whatever the case, the sheer imagination on display is breathtaking with the way Owen constantly one-ups everyone who gets in his way. The conspiracy at hand is sadly dull though.

An odd blend of comedy and noir from Harold Ramis. While Ramis made his name in comedy, this aspect totally misfires here with an overload of lame puns and gags early on. The second half of the film gains a bit more focus as comic foil Oliver Platt is pushed into the background, and there are some sensational scenes as the protagonist grows uneasy and uncertain of whether his partner will betray him, egged on by a man who they have taken hostage.
