2022 Challenges: Preliminary Poll #1

#1

Post by sol »

For the past three weeks, we have been discussing ideas for the 2022 Official Challenge Schedule.

The thread on this topic can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5578

In around six days' time, I will be opening private message voting for us to choose which challenge options should make the 2022 lineup. In the meantime, it is necessary for us to narrow down the dozens of potential challenges proposed in order that the final poll is not too cumbersome. At this stage of the proceedings, we will be doing this through a public vote.

Like last year, I have decided that it was best to go with just two preliminary polls (a reduction on the three polls we did in earlier years). This is therefore one of two polls that are being run at the same time. Please make sure that you have had your say in both polls. Since there was no easy way to divide all of the proposed challenge ideas in half, I used https://www.random.org/lists/ to achieve a random order. The first half of the options were placed in one ballot, the other half in the other ballot and then I alphabetised the options for ease of reading.

We are looking for the 10 best performing options across both the preliminary polls to make it into the final poll. With this in mind, I have decided to permit everyone five votes in both preliminary polls. You do NOT have to use all 5+5 votes; only vote for challenge ideas that you think would be viable and which you yourself would actively participate in.

For more information, please read the thread that I have linked to above. Just to clarify, this is a poll, not a discussion thread for ideas (that's now closed). This thread can, however, be used to clarify information regarding the ideas being voted on.

Please avoid using this thread to complain about which options are or are not doing well in the poll. This is only one stage of the voting. :)

Two questions... what is the "Degrees of Separation" challenge? Secondly I see in the other thread: "ICM Forum Yearly Polls, Top 25 films per year", but is it perhaps something we can consider to merge that with "forum lists", even though the pool of films for both is large, but I have a sense they'll strongly overlap.

"Six degrees of separation is the idea that all people on average are six, or fewer, social connections away from each other."
It was popularized in John Guare's play Six Degrees of Separation that was adapted into a movie starring Will Smith.

"Each film you watch must have some connection to the film you watched just before it. You don't need to use the same type of connection between films all the time, there are many ways to connect them: same actor, same director, same year, same theme, same list on ICM, same song, same locations, same word in title, etc. Use your imagination."
he or A. or Armo or any

Thanks Armo for answering the first question.

Regarding your second question, no. If both ideas succeed, the two challenges will be:
- Forum Lists (excluding Year by Year polls)
- Year by Year Poll (top 25 films)

But we are a long way away before we can make that call. There's still five days left to vote!

Okay and are all year by year polls done by this point? Degrees of separation seems fune, it's like run the challenges" but more creative. Thanks for explaining!

Edit: okay i know the answer. Found it. I don't think half of them are done. I think about 1000 films would be available in the pool, currently.

Just whatever year polls have been done by the time that the challenge is run. And no problem. ;)

I did vote for the short films challenge, I'm sure it would be near impossible to host that one but the carnage going on there would be awesome. I wonder how much shorts you could watch if you watch nothing but shorts for a month.

I also voted for the new releases challenge. Would it better to call that the 2020's challenge?

No. When hurlu proposed the idea, it was about watching current cinema releases (and new releases to streaming services).

Found the posts in the other topic, I still like the idea because of the streaming rule but if there's going to be triple points for visiting a cinema (do you have to upload your ticket or how are you going to check that?) it's going to be a bitch to host. :satstunned:

Honesty policy. And triple points was just an idea. Obviously we'll discuss the finer aspects of it all if (a) the challenge makes it in the preliminary poll, and (b) the challenge succeeds in the final poll. We are a long way away from that happening just yet.

Yes ticket proof + selfie with on-screen film title in the background + signed written testimonies from two reputable witnesses that you stayed all along. That is the original idea but I am sure there is a way to strengthen it. :turned:

These challenges have always rested on the good faith of posters reporting what they watched, this would still be spirit.

Actually, pictures of ticket and theater could be something cool to post though, as a side challenge or simply bringing a bit of visual fun.

Won't be valid unless you have a camrip release to prove you were there.

Pics of tickets would be hard, we're fully digital these days. No more movie tickets.

Perfect, and we can all "enjoy" watching the film, that solves it all !

I am still always getting a ticket whatever the theater but I am buying spot and if you have a membership I can imagine it is screened from your phone. A picture of the theater could do, it is more to connect all the participants with your experience.

I buy at home, since our theater requires you to pick seats (and doing that from the phone is not very UX-friendly). After that, the tickets is sent by mail and you can just scan it from the phone. In the beginning that still got you a paper ticket after scanning, but they stopped doing that recently. Very eco-friendly
