Future challenges

I'm running one over at DVD Talk next month but I figured I'd see if there's interest in doing it over here also, with the same rules but I can't guarantee any prizes at this point.

I like challenges and I like sci-fi so I would be up for it. I would mostly only watch films that are also checks so that would make it trickier especially as I have got platinum in the 100 greatest sci-fi list. Ill have a think about it. I can always sign up on the other forum or just do it for fun on my own

Yes

I'm trying to watch a heap now as a buffer, and am also taking a bunch of movies less than 90 minutes with me in case I can sneak one in every day.

It's just my opinion but maybe on this forum it would be better to have a somewhat wider challange. Maybe a challenge to finish some lists or watch a certain amount of movies from a given period. I really hope we can make our own challenges on this forum because I like the idea a lot.

Agreed. I think we should have ICM lists related challenges.

List challenges are fine unless you're the guy that already did it or only have a couple movies left. What about monthly themes, like a genre, language, decade, etc., that are generic enough for a majority to be able to do?

Edit: Just checked, I have about 8 possible sci-fi choices that are in my Netflix Streaming Queue.

I decided I want to watch a film from each year probably start with 1920 and finish with 2000.

I don't think I would do them in order but that's another possibility. May not necessarily start this in July but I could do.

With it being on this forum then I would say that films being on a least one list at the time of watching it would also add to the challenge.

Maybe a challenge sub-category may be useful if challenges on here become popular.

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to swing two sci-fi challenges at two places at the same time. Since it looks like we're leaning towards more site specific challenges, maybe we'll have one of those ready by August.

Ok, so I know the Japanese challenge hasn't been on the way for long and some people haven't even started it yet. But for future purposes perhaps we could bounce around some ideas about the followup.

So here's a few brainfarts from me, tell me what you guys think.

Possible rules:

1. The winner of the challenge gets to pick the next challenge out of a list of 3 or 5 possibilities we come up with on the forum

Possible challenges:

1. Watch a movie from as many different countries as possible
2. Watch a movie from as many different years as possible
3. Watch as many movies from Germany as possible
4. Watch as many movies from France as possible
5. Watch as many movies from Italy as possible
6. Watch as many movies from the Spanish language as possible (thus including Latin America)
7. Watch a movie from as many ICM-lists as you can

So I'm looking forward to your ideas.

To make it a bit more challenging how about:

Watch as many movies from Norway as possible

The output is more uneven and for most people more obscure.

That's an odd thing to say considering how many "mafia" movies you've seen. ;)

There are some good movies to be seen. Dismissing them all with a comment like that will most of all make you look silly.

Besides, there's no real challenge in watching a lot of movies from a country with a strong and well documented cinematic tradition.

- Watch as many movies as possible with a female protagonist
- Watch as many movies as possible based on a novel
- Watch as many movies as possible set in a confined space
- Watch as many movies as possible set in a specific time period
- Watch as many movies as possible featuring actors from a specific country (good for countries that don't have a strong cinematic tradition as LarsC put it so well)
- Watch as many movies as possible where an animal has a major part
- Watch as many movies as possible from directors whose first/last name starts with a specific letter
- Watch as many movies as possible where the protagonist is handicapped
- Watch as many movies as possible where someone plays the parent of someone less than ten years younger (IRL) than they are
- Watch as many movies as possible where the plot revolves around a mistaken identity

I'm not dismissing them, I just know that besides a couple of established films (that i like), you can't say that Norway has an amazing cinematic reputation. That would simply be lying. I don't think that makes me look silly, I'm simply stating a fact. Now if there was a different list than the Norway awards, which frankly is extremely unappetizing, maybe.

And about the "challenge" aspect, I have zero (kelvin) desire to watch unestablished and potentially horrible movies for challenges. If others do, that is fine, but count me out. As you have pointed out I have suffered enough with the mafia movies from the IMDB lists. Challenges are for me a great opportunity to watch movies that I've been wanting to see for a long time.

I would also like a British one, but as I am early done with the BFI and kind of went on a mini kick lately, I wouldn't mind that one later on.

How about a 6 degrees of separation challenge where the next film you watch has to be connected to the one you just watched.

You could expand on the different countries by doing an around the world challenge where you plot a path going through as many different countries as possible and watching a film from each country.

I'm definitely up for doing a different challenge each month and some of the suggestions put forward so far are worth doing

Naturally a better list would be required. I was thinking of adding movies not on that list. There are a lot of movies on the amanda awards list I'd rather not watch too.

We could also have genre quests.

I'm also up for France, which I'm watching tons of films from anyways.

What about an African challange? I'm pretty certain that it will be the continent most of us has seen the least from.

I love the six degrees challenge (my fave so far) and the "one movie by country".

I need to work on British and German movies too so why not
I spent a month watching only French movies recently to finish the 2 lists on iCM but why not.

How about a Virtual Film Festival with everyone watching the same film the same day, with different starting times to cope with different time zones so some people could watch at the same time.

That could work with the xbox & netflix idea chemosh had? But then I think the time zone thing would complicate things a lot, at least for me :-/
