Sorry to say I'm not particularly a fan based on what I've seen so far. That being said, I'll probably watch News from Home soon based on its very high rankings in both Sight & Sound polls.

Great

Very Good

Good

Above Average

Les rendez-vous d'Anna - The Meetings of Anna (1978)
La folie Almayer - Almayer's Folly (2011)

Okay

Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975)

Not Good

I struggled to get into Akerman, and I believe it's bad to start with Jeanne Dielman. That's the film you build up to after a better understanding of the specific way she utilizes the passage of time in her films. It was Toute une nuit - my 6th Akerman - that finally unlocked Akerman for me, and I think it's the best match of material with her style.

1. Toute une nuit
2. La chambre

3. Les rendez-vous d’Anna
4. News From Home
5. Golden Eighties
6. Jeanne Dielman
7. Je Tu Il Elle
8. The Captive

9. Hotel Monterey
10. D'Est

I've actually watched this yesteday since it's the 53th-best film of all time, a secret kept best-hidden for so long.
Was not uninteresting in a way I'm used from James Benning. Maybe even a bit stretching it at ~88 minutes, thank God it's not 3 or 5 hours long. Unfortunately, the "poetic" audio aspect of the film is more or less lost on me, I would almost prefer it as an ASMR mood time capsule of 70s New York. 5/10, maybe 6 on my more avant-garde days of the week

1. Un divan à New York [A Couch in New York] (1996) - 4.8

I saw it because it was expiring on Mubi, but it seems I picked one of her worst films to start with. I'll inevitably watch more from her, but she's not high on my priority list.

Since he came up in the S&S thread, how about Wong Kar Wai?

Ashes of Time 10
In the Mood for Love 9
Days of Being Wild
Chungking Express
As Tears Go By 7
2046
Happy Together 6
Fallen Angels 5

Have to admit I don't remember a few of these too well though.

Oh, WKW, maybe the pivotal moment in me getting to discover and, who would have thought?, love cinema as an artform beside the mainstream.
Chungking Express was this very key film and I still keep attention at every best-before date at the grocery and think of this film.
Unfortunately, basically every sighting of his oeuvre would be way over a decade ago for me now - how would I rank that?

As I said in the S&S thread, not really overall a great favorite - but I've also seen most of these only once, some of them just when they came out in cinemas, so it's hard to judge.

Only seen 3, but I feel like all 3 could do with a rewatch, which is rare.

1. 8.2 - Fa yeung nin wah [ In the Mood for Love] (2000)

2. 7.6 - Chung Hing sam lam [Chungking Express] (1994)
3. 7.4 - Chun gwong cha sit [Happy Together] (1997)

The first was just so pretty and stylish with great music, and it might become a favourite.
The second I need to rewatch the most because I didn't realize it was two different men until almost the end... I somehow wasn't paying attention during the handover scene halfway through, so I was really confused why this guy switched girls all of a sudden. I felt like a proper twat when my friend explained it to me.
The third is a film that I should love on paper, but I didn't jive with it. It was my first WKW film, I think, which might have something to do with it.

I am interested in seeing some of his other work as well.

I'd probably rate Chungking Express less harshly nowadays, but man did I hate that California Dreaming song.
I like Wong's film, but if I'm 100% honest, the quality of his work mostly coincides with the quality of Christopher Doyle's work.

Not impressed - might require a rewatch:

catching up

i did rank films if they had the same rating

WKW

Fallen Angels - 4.0*
My Blueberry Nights - 3.5* (need a rewatch)
Chungking Express - 3.5*
In The Mood for Love - 3.5*
Happy Together - 3.5*

Difficult films for me that I appreciate for a lot of stuff, but maybe want to like more than I actually do. It's hard to be able to follow the plot. I do like the visual styles a lot. Fallen Angels worked best for me. Maybe his films need a ton of rewatches. Def. will get back to it and watch the other ones too at some point.

Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne

Deux jours, une nuit - 4.0*
L'enfant - 4.0
Le gamin au vélo - 3.5
La fille inconnue - 3.0

L'enfant leaning on the lower end to 3.5. Solid films.

David O. Russell

Silver Linings Playbook - 3.5
The Fighter - 3.0
American Hustle - no rating (didn't finish)

Not a fan.

M. Night Shyamalan

Unbreakable - 3.0
The Visit - 3.0
The Sixth Sense - 2.5 (needs a rewatch and might get a tad higher i assume)
The Happening - 1.5

Need to give his other films a watch, think i might personally be underrating him or rating him a bit too harsh, but overall a bit of an overrated name. I tend to forget his films quickly.

JLG

A bout de souffle - 2.5

Wasn't my thing

Steven Soderbergh

Ocean's Eleven - 3.5
Contagion - 3.0

No strong feelings or associations here.

Park Chan-wook

Stoker - 2.5

Started but not finished: Oldboy and The Handmaiden

Have difficulties with this director but I might do another attempt. Maybe i need to get how he does structure plot. Because i lack structure with all his films.

Wolfgang Petersen

Troy - 3.0
Poseidon - 3.0

Never heard of this director but two fun films.

Sergio Leone

The good, the bad and the ugly - 4.5
Once Upon a Time in the West - 3.5
A Fistful of Dollars - 3.0
For a few dollars more - 3.0

These films could use a rewatch.

Luis Buñuel

Los olvidados - 3.5
Un chien andalou - 3.0

Need to see more and los olvidados need to be rewatched

Céline Sciamma

Tomboy - 4.0
Portrait de la jeune fille en feu - 3.5
Bande de filles - 3.5
Petite Maman - 3.5
Naissance de pieuvres - 3.0

Solid director.

ratings out of 5 and out of 10 again, including a rare full 10, so he is a special director indeed, although I agree a bit hard to get into, and his perfectionism/tinkering doesn't seem to actually improve the experience of the movies for the viewer it seems... from the outside it looks more like he gets lost in his own worlds.

1. - 5 - 10 - Faa yeung nin wa (2000) In the Mood for Love
2. - 5 - 9 - Yi dai zong shi (2013) The Grandmaster
3. - 4 - 8,5 - Do lok tin si (1995) Fallen Angels
4. - 4 - 8 - Ah fei zing zyun (1990) Days of Being Wild
5. - 4 - 8 - 2046 (2004)
6. - 4 - 7,5 - Chacun son cinéma (2007)

Maybe one of the classic Hollywood directors with large filmographies? It doesn't look like we've done Hawks, Ford, Huston, Wellman, or Cukor yet, among others.
