Jesse Eisenberg is well cast here and is much of the reason why this rather predictable film works; his dialogue always feels very natural even with his character's penchant for dropping big words and using over-the-top euphemisms. Far less interesting is a romantic subplot with Eisenberg's awkwardness in this department completely overdone. The film certainly works though when it concentrates on his job, vacation and study anxieties.

12. Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979) 10/10 ... Watched the Redux version for the first time - enjoyed the additional footage
13. The Barefoot Contessa (Joseph L. Mankiewicz) 7.5/10 ... I'd seen this before but didn't really remember it, was definitely worth rewatching ... One of many examples of films that are rated very highly by Cahiers that I liked but clearly not as much as they did

Waxing poetic about the "fickle finger of fate" and reluctantly sponging money off his family, Timothy Spall is superb as a jaded taxi driver here and Lesley Manville is fine as his wife. Their friends and neighbours are less interesting though and it feels odd whenever the film deflects away from Spall, Manville and their kids. When they are in focus though, the raw nerves hit really resonate. The film has a perfectly melancholic music score too.

Oh, and I am now inside the top 500 users for the TSP 21C list.

I prefer At Land. tehe The premise interested me here, but without any recorded audio or music, the project never (at least to my mind) matched the meditative beauty of something like the films of James Benning. I certainly liked bits and pieces though, whether it be the glorious sunsets in the middle section (see above), the way everyone looks like ants only shown in long shot in the first segment, or the fourth wall breaking near the end.

The premise might have worked well here had it been milked for all of its comedic potential, but played out as a drama, the whole thing seems too silly and improbable to click. Convenient coincidences aside, the film also wants us to believe that Melvyn Douglas is madly in love with Marlene Dietrich after spending just "one hour" with her (his words). The apparent passion of the pair simply does not really translate. Strong ending though.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!
