42. Captain Phillips (2013) - 7/10
43. Death Note (2017) - 1/10
44. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) - 7/10
45. Fiend Without a Face (1958) - 5/10

Captain Phillips was way better than expected, suspense the whole time. Death Note was a joke, a disgrace even. Man, but what a peculiar viewing The Killing of a Sacred Deer was; so unsettling, unnerving… every scene felt so… wrong in the sense of being surreal, apathetic, almost inhuman. Fiend Without a Face I couldn’t really get into.

October Challenge: ImageImage
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

A Rob Zombie horror film that has been unfavorably compared to Rosemary's Baby with good reason. The non-ending does not quite work either. And yet, this is an incredibly good-looking film, full of strange and unsettling images and atmospheric lighting. The red room with a neon crucifix is especially moody and the film throws a bizarre assortment of imagery at the screen in the final fifteen minutes that needs to be seen to be believed.

Titled De Prooi ('The Prey') in Dutch, the original title only eventually makes sense here as the plot focuses on a teenager trying to find her birth parents after her adoptive mother's death in a hit-and-run accident. It is eventually revealed that the death was no accident and that someone is out to stop the teen's investigations. The whys and wherefores are pretty uninteresting with dull characters, an overload of red herrings and very slow pacing. The music, which varies from spooky beats to atmospheric percussion, is great throughout though and Maayke Bouten is also okay in the lead role.

The first half here underwhelmed me with Wick's quest not powered by a burning sense of vengeance this time. The second half is just as classy as the original though with similarly vibrant colours amidst grandiose locations - chiefly Rome and a newfangled New York art gallery here. There is also a great silenced pistols fight in a crowded shopping centre, plus a nifty section in which various kills are deliberately played out-of-order and overlapping.

Reportedly created by splicing footage from two unreleased thrillers together with newly shot footage, the production of this movie is mad. On one hand, the plot makes little sense; on the other hand, it is remarkably lucid for what is essentially a found footage film. There is some snake monster in the mix too, and humanoid with giant claws, it is a really WTF creation, and there is enough bizarre and out-there imagery here for this to never bore.

19. The War of the Worlds (1953)
Having seen Invaders from Mars and Plan 9 from Outer Space in recent months, my expectations for alien invasion movies were very low. So it was nice to see one that maintained genuine tension throughout its run time and had just superb production design and effects. The look of the movie holds up really well more than 60 years later. There are problems, of course. The characters are very thin. Two other notes:
- Even when I was a small kid, I noticed that female characters in classic Hollywood movies didn't remotely resemble real women. In this movie we get one of the classic misogynist tropes, the hysterical female lead who screams for no reason and must be comforted/scolded by the male lead.
- It's remarkable how alien invaders so often choose to begin their invasion in the vicinity of Los Angeles.

20. Legend (2015)
The whole point of this movie is to see Tom Hardy do his thing in a double role. Hardy is quite enjoyable. Other than that, there's little to recommend this over The Krays (1990).

21. First Reformed (2017)
Only a few years ago, Paul Schrader was making crap like Dog Eat Dog. Now he creates this intense spiritual drama. I guess that's a welcome return to form of sorts. Still ... this movie doesn't really come together. I write that sorrowfully because I like Schrader a lot, even or especially some of his lesser-loved works like Cat People and The Comfort of Strangers. (Seriously, go see Comfort of Strangers). First Reformed starts really well with a complex protagonist and a compelling dramatic situation. But as the story progresses, and the tension is supposed to mount, I felt lost in a morass of interior monologue and brooding score. It doesn't help that Schrader is just repeating his Taxi Driver setup by putting Travis Bickle inside a church, or indulging his innermost Bresson fanboy, which is something he's done throughout his career. A lot of the so-called New Hollywood directors of the 70s were devoted to their Euro arthouse influences. Schrader had the fever worse than most, at times moving beyond influence to mere imitation. It's sad that 40 years later he's still copying Bresson.

Just to confirm - you're claiming 8 points for the 8 episodes of S1 of Killing Eve?

Also, could you please spoiler your previously watched stuff? It makes double-checking things like this WAY easier.
