FTV:2: Volk en vaderliefde (1976). Netherlands. 5

Image

Opening the play with a scene which feels like the first 10 minutes have been cut, editor Ed Braad cuts the film in a clumsy, jarring style, keeping frames from end of the takes on screen for far too long, and hard mismatches in the edits from scene to scene. Taking on a Harry Mulisch play, (adapted by Mulisch himself) deemed too expensive by the TV company, director Wim T. Schippers entered, (who got the say in the final cut) and turns the play into a strange, 4th wall breaking production, via the Costume Drama being tied with horribly cheap beads,Euro sleaze and horse sex (eh?!) all knocked down by slams into a modern day couple reading the Mulisch play.

Fun fact, July 11th is The Day of the Flemish Community of Belgium, which marks the anniversary of the Battle of the Golden Spurs (Guldensporenslag), a military confrontation between the royal army of France and rebellious forces of the County of Flanders on 11 July 1302 during the Franco-Flemish War (1297–1305). It took place near the town of Kortrijk (Courtrai) in modern-day Belgium and resulted in an unexpected victory for the Flemish. It is sometimes referred to as the Battle of Courtrai. (Thanks Wiki)

First check. It features some great shot of the town, and the story was decent.

9. De lift (Netherlands, 1983) 5/10
Fun idea and a good watch. The ending was a bit of a let-down.

This Dutch silent film follows an aspirant botanist who conspires to have his neighbour imprisoned in order to obtain his rare black tulip bulbs - or something like that. It's not quite clear, though there is actually too much exposition here with cumbersome narration title cards and lengthy dialogue exchanges throughout, and it is only so interesting to watch a film in which so much needs to be read (including multiple handwritten letters). The tulips do look lovely and lead actress is pretty good, but this is a very primitive silent movie with far more emphasis on the story than visual flair.

Jonathan Swift's classic tale is portrayed through a mix of live action footage and animation here. The animation for the little people is flat and simple, but the scenes that combine animation and live action are well crafted, with it really appearing like Gulliver is part of the animated world as he is fed with giant contraptions and converses with local politicians. There are some songs that vary in effectiveness, they are generally pleasant to listen to.

1. Het paard van Sinterklaas / Winky’s Horse (2005, Netherlands) 5/10 It is a sub-standard story about a girl who wants a horse for Christmas. There is a boy painted in the Zwarte Piet fashion. We’ve discussed the Dutch tradition on the forum before, so that’s how I was even familiar with it. However, it’s in pretty poor taste. It flew in 2005. It’s something that is not acceptable in America. Otherwise, the main discussion centered on children and their belief in Santa, St. Nick, and how children from different countries believed different things.

Also known as Alleman, this documentary from Bert Haanstra was shot entirely via hidden cameras with unsuspecting participants. The result is an unfocused and sprawling but yet fascinating look at average Dutch citizens going about their business with some intriguing ethical questions in the mix, particularly as Haanstra indulges in various citizens dressing and undressing at the beach. The humour is pretty good at least and the editing is great.

1. Robinson Crusoe (2016) Belgium | France 114 checks [double]
Animation. Everything you didn't want to know about his time on the island.
2. Strike a Pose (2016) Netherlands | Belgium 77 checks
Documentary. Revisiting the dancers from Madonna's Blonde Ambition Tour. It's a story about the documentary Truth or Dare. Forced outing. Living with HIV and losing friends to AIDS. And that blonde dancer was one giant homophobe before the tour. It passed you might say. So why is this a NED/BEL co-production? One of the dancers, Salim, was born in Belgium. 9/10, and you might shed a tear or two.

Titled De Prooi ('The Prey') in Dutch, the original title only eventually makes sense here as the plot focuses on a teenager trying to find her birth parents after her adoptive mother's death in a hit-and-run accident. It is eventually revealed that the death was no accident and that someone is out to stop the teen's investigations. The whys and wherefores are pretty uninteresting with dull characters, an overload of red herrings and very slow pacing. The music, which varies from spooky beats to atmospheric percussion, is great throughout though and Maayke Bouten is also okay in the lead role.

Second film by the Dardennes, like with the other one (Rosetta) I can't get into it. I'l surely check out some more for this challenge though.

Let's each pay for our own high-class wafflesShow
1. Le Fidele AKA Racer and the Jailbird (2017, Belgium)
2. Insyriated (2017, Belgium)
I was not prepared for how intense this was going to be. Taking place over the course of a day, a family tries to survive in their apartment in war-torn Syria. The sound was was the star of the film and created tension beyond what was on-screen. Every single moment just got worse and worse, and you really felt what it was like to live in a war zone. Intense and thrilling and definitely recommended.

This strange Belgian animation tracks the further adventures of Pinocchio who, after being turned back into a puppet, tries to prove his worth by flying into outer space with a turtle to stop a whale from destroying all of Earth's satellites (!) since Pinocchio thinks he can hypnotise it (!). While the plot is bizarre and does not make an iota of sense scientifically, there is at least ample WTF imagery (Martian space crabs) and sheer weirdness here.

:run:

And with that, Belgium now has 10 more points than the Netherlands for the first time this month. What was once a neck-in-neck race is soon turning into a probable win for the Belgians in terms of most films viewed.

Great film, I'm usually not a fan of coming-of-age film but this one felt almost real thanks to the camerawork.

Is Vinyan considered Belgian?

One recommendation for all: Home (2016)!

Probably going to catch up with some Belgian movies and Spoorloos (the only Dutch one) that i rent from the library, and some that i bought (some Dardenne movies).

The film has a Belgian writer/director, cinematographer and producer attached, plus the involvement of at least three Belgian production companies, so I don't think that I could possibly exclude it, though the film is quite clearly a co-production between France, the UK and Belgium.

I haven't seen it myself (yet - I might do by the end of the month; we'll see).

Set to some great music, Philips Radio is a nicely rhythmic look at the inner workings of a factory in which all machines seem to move in harmony. The light globe construction and glass blowing are particular highlights. A Single Life was amazing. A clever and nifty idea, delivered well and thought-provoking, all in just over two minutes of screen time. Harpya has some of the most bizarre imagery that I have ever seen – and some really neat sound effects – though I couldn't say for sure what it is about. Regen has a lot of pretty images, including some reflections in bodies of water and puddles that predate Mirror of Holland, though the focus here is surfaces everywhere affected by rain.

21a. Nieuwe gronden (1933) 29min Netherlands
21b. Misère au Borinage (1934) 33min = 62min Belgium

Nieuwe gronden was interesting; what initially starts off as an upbeat look at a massive terraforming project in Holland, with machines and waves moving in synchrony with the music, suddenly takes a sharp turn and focuses on the strife caused by an oversupply of grain, or "we're busting with grain" as they say, with the film then sharply cutting the disposal of excess grain against starving kids overseas. Yikes. Misère au Borinage is a bit of a spiritual sequel, starting with the masses rebelling against the dumping over food oversupplies and then gradually moving to show the impact on working class families when there are not enough jobs to go around. Shot as a silent (with no music), this choice initially seems odd, but in a way, it makes the plight of the starving working class families ever the more haunting. Gee, the eyes of some of those kids. A depressing but thought-provoking documentary.
