20. Don't Answer the Phone! (1980) Video Nasty; banned in the UK due to (implied) violence

Image

There is a fair bit of interest here as the antagonist is a fashion photographer whose shots of his victims are mistaken for realistic poses and Nicholas Worth does well bouncing between smooth-talking photographer and utter maniac. He is, however, more of a supporting character as three quarters of the film revolves around two dull detectives on his trail. Also, with strangulation as his modus operandi, the grisly bits are few and far between.

Bonus Challenge: Why the film was banned:
SpoilerShow
As alluded to above, there is nothing too grisly here with mostly strangulation deaths throughout. We do, however, see him pour burning hot wax over a victim at one point.

21. Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) Banned in Cambodia for portraying a rural Cambodian temple as a hideout for drug dealers and murderers

Image

Second viewing. While the character progression of the original is not there and the attempts to cater to US audiences are blunt, this is a pretty wonderful sequel all things considered. Julianne Moore makes for a superb villainess, rivaling the best Bond baddies in her over-the-top megalomaniac actions; her mincer could be straight out of a Video Nasty and the 50s sets/costumes are wonderfully kooky. Great stunts and action as in Part One too.

Bonus Challenge: Why the film was banned:
SpoilerShow
The Kingsman agents land in the outskirts of Cambodia where they set about taking down the murdering drug dealers who have been operating from there without being touched by local authorities.

Well, I have a new movie in my top 10 least favorite films. 1-6 are Minions, 7 is I Spit on Your Grave, and 8-10 are also Minions. This was truly terrible. I knew it was a rape/revenge story, but there wasn't a story. It was 20m of a light warmup, 40m of some brutal rape scenes, and 40m of some terribly constructed revenge killings. Just awful.

22. Invasion of the Blood Farmers (1972) Video Nasty; banned in the UK due to violence

Image

With a cast of noticeably non-professionals and third rate special effects, the 3.1 IMDb rating is understandable here, though I liked this more than that. The blood draining is just okay, but a subplot involving an additive used to make victims' blood rapidly reproduce is curious. The film has some effective point-of-view shots too and Jack Neubeck is truly wacky. Got to also love the images of victims being drained of their blood like cows being milked.

Bonus Challenge: Why the film was banned:
SpoilerShow
One of the farmers viciously attacks and drains a fluffy dog of its blood.

Image

However, it is pretty obvious that from the extreme close-ups etc that the pink-stained dog is not a real dog - or even a toy dog - but rather either a furry jacket or giant piece of cotton wool.

Well, I'm only 3 films into Peckinpah (Wild Bunch [5], Pat Garrett & BIlly the Kid [5], Straw Dogs [4]) and he's not exactly in danger of cracking my favorite directors list. But his films are well-made, and there are things about them I can appreciate, even if I don't care for them. He does sit tied at #16 for lowest-rated director I've seen at least three films from (out of about 190).

I appreciate you takin' that hit for us, though. Somebody had to watch it if we're gonna finish this list (wanna watch Faces of Death next? :whistling: ). It's definitely a deeply unpleasant movie. Although Wrong Way (1971) is probably even worse. There are even more and longer rape scenes with no revenge. Just... ugh...

I haven't seen anything from Peckinpah that comes even close to the terribleness of I Spit On Your Grave. Straw Dogs is the only one that comes even close and it's much better executed. The rape scene is also nowhere near as long as nasty. Having said that, I'm not much of a fan of the movie, but I wouldn't put it in the same bucket as ISoyG.

You know why it was banned Max. Why would you think it would any point in seeing it. It clearly states that it is a 20 minute rape scene in it.

Just as I have just a handful of norwegian bans left, but I will never see A Serbian Film of those. I think it is much worse than anything I Spit on Your Grave can throw at me, so I simply wont see it. (Also it's banned because of a very specific law so I wont touch it with a ten foot pole even if I wanted too, it would actually be a felony to see it)

52. The Child (1977)
Where? UK
Why? Video Nasty Section 3: Eh, pretty mild actually. A couple of scenes of light gore and violence by a kid but nothing that bad. This was an odd one. It starts as a kind of off-kilter evil kid movie and then turns into a zombie movie in the back half, generating a very different tone. Overall, I still kinda liked it. Had a good sense of atmosphere in places.

Image
53. La tumba de los muertos vivientes (1982) a.k.a. Oasis of the Zombies
Where? UK
Why? Video Nasty Section 3: huh... I honestly didn't expect to watch a crappier Nazi zombie movie than Zombie Lake this month but thanks to Jess Franco, here we are. I assume it was banned for the usual zombie gore, although like some others this month, the effects are so terrible that only the most featherweight of folks would be offended by it.

Image
54. Exposé (1976) a.k.a. House on Straw Hill a.k.a. Trauma
Where? UK
Why? Video Nasty Section 1: Probably banned for a combination of kinky sex scenes including a kinda rape at gun point (although the woman seems to be enjoying it for some bizarre reason), a masturbation scene and a lesbian sex scene as well as a few scenes of violence, most notably a stabbing in a shower with a lot of blood and nudity. Honestly this one didn't do much for me despite the presence of Udo Kier. It's a fairly dry thriller for much of the run time despite the lurid descriptions of things above.

Image
55. Macabre (2009)
Where? Malaysia
Why? Banned due to gore, violence and cannibalism. Yea, I can definitely see why the conservative Malaysia would have problems with this one. While the first thirty minutes is more of an unsettling setup (some folks pick up a hitchhiker who asks them to take her home where her weird family invites them in for dinner), after everyone gets drugged, the movies switches gears into a blood-soaked gory nightmare. I liked this one actually. The bizarre, wide-eyed stare and monotone delivery of the mother in particular made for a great villain.

Image
56. Shogun Assassin (1980)
Where? UK
Why? Video Nasty Section 3: Banned due to all the blood geysers. Heh, we watched this one at the movie lunch I organize at work every two weeks. Yes, I know this is a butchered (no pun intended) version of the first two superior Lone Wolf & Cub films, but you know what, it is still a blast to watch with a group. The movie is almost non-stop killing with comedically over-the-top spurts of blood. Fun stuff. Also that soundtrack is freaking awesome.

Well, I'm an obsessive completist, and it's on three lists, so...

But honestly, I didn't think it was going to be that bad. The rape/revenge subgenre is itself quite icky, but there are ways to make it less awful. Sudden Impact has pretty much the exact same plot as ISoYG (just add in Dirty Harry), but focused on not the rape. But the way ISoYG handled everything was just awful - it was ENTIRELY UNNECESSARY for her to seduce the men she wanted to kill before killing them. Rattling off every single cliched excuse of why it's the woman's fault she got gang-raped is lazy and dangerous writing. Having multiple brutally violent rape scenes, but failing to come even remotely close to matching that intensity with the revenge killings is just bad film making. I could go on, but it would be beating a dead horse at this point.

You know why it was banned Max. Why would you think it would any point in seeing it. It clearly states that it is a 20 minute rape scene in it.

You know, the director of ISoyG claims it's a feminist movie...
Well that settles it - revised rating: 10/10. Brilliant display of feminism. Next up, I'll watch a film that proposes a solution to the global hunger problem. Probably start with Cannibal Holocaust.

Banned in West/East Germany,

21. Das Beil von Wandsbek (The Axe of Wandsbek, Falk Harnack, 1951) 8.5/10 (Banned in East Germany - The East German political establishment and the Soviet representatives in the country disapproved of the film, which they viewed as promoting sympathy to the perpetrators of Nazi atrocities. The SED politburo denounced it, proclaiming that "it did not present the proletariat resistance as heroes, but rather, their executioners." The film was banned after less than a month; it became the first East German film ever to be banned)
22. Der Untertan (The Kaiser's Lackey, Wolfgang Staudte, 1951) 9/10 (Wikipedia List - Banned in West Germany, because of "anticonstitutional" content, regarded by the government as "communist sedition")
23. Berlin um die Ecke (Berlin Around the Corner, Gerhard Klein, 1965) 10/10 (Banned in East Germany - For the Central Committee, this was one of the "worst films" of the year. The authorities declared the film needed to be banned for its "anti-socialist, harmfully critical attitude." In 1966, officials banned the rough cut in the aftermath of the SED Party’s 11th Plenum, condemning the film as “dishonest and anti-socialist.”)
24. Wenn du groß bist, lieber Adam (When You Grow Up, Dear Adam, Egon Günther, 1966-90) 9/10 (Banned in East Germany -"The film uses a lyrical symbol, however it is ambiguous," determined the film censors. They criticized the film's unsettling lack of a coherent idea or statement. Partially destroyed, reconstructed in 1990)

This offbeat horror flick deliberately plays out in a non-straightforward fashion as the filmmakers force us to question whether what we are seeing throughout are flashbacks or fantasy. There is also a lot of mystery attached to her father's disappearance. The audiovisual design perfectly matches the deliberately fragmented narrative well with some neat dissolve-over colour effects (as above) as well as a lot of rapid edits and rapid zooms in and out.

Bonus Challenge: Why the film was banned:
SpoilerShow
There are some pretty graphic violent attacks here...

Image

...but the implied (though not expressly shown) child abuse (in flashback) in probably the most 'nasty' element here.

Banned for violence, I guess, but also for the reputation of the first one. I have to admit, this was a lot more fun because Wife and I have seen Scream - we had fun shouting out about the tropes pointed out in that film (e.g., "I can see her nipples through her shirt - she's gonna die!"). Much tamer than the first (though with nudity to compensate?), I'm glad the IMDB trivia acknowledged the glaring plot hole that has puzzled me for years.

Neither title really encompasses what this slasher is about and as far as slashers go, this is formulaic stuff - only with less kills than usual since there are only four main characters. Still, the film gets in some nifty novelty deaths (most notably a kitchen vat and a drill to the head) and the walking point-of-view camerawork for the killer is highly effective, if derivative of Friday the 13th. The complex interiors of the dorm are interesting too.

Bonus Challenge: Why the film was banned:
SpoilerShow
Male victim is drilled in the back of the head, body falling to the ground and oozing blood.

:circle: Great to find nothing but love and support for this deliriously wacky film - which I have now added to my 500<400 ballot. One of the internet critics whose opinion I trust the most (Richard Winters) gave it a 0/10. (u)

In addition to New Zealand, Foxy Brown is one of the Video Nasties which is one of the more peculiar choices also in my opinion given it's pretty light on actual on-screen violence and sex compared to a lot of the others on the list as well as being the lone blaxspoitation movie on the list. There are definitely more offensive ones out there like Sweet Sweetback.

Misleadingly titled in a shameless attempt to cash in on a spate of then-popular horror and sci-fi films, this cheap Mexican production focuses on just one human/ape hybrid who totally avoids blood stains as he goes on a rampage across multiple days and nights. The pseudoscience at hand is quite preposterous, the dissolve-over transformation effects are laughable and the plot is pretty repetitive aside from random cutaways to a female wrestler (and love interest for a detective) in a subplot that goes nowhere. The film does mount some pretty grisly imagery, including eye-gouging at least.

Bonus Challenge: Why the film was banned:
SpoilerShow
Footage of actual open-heart surgery is edited into the gorilla heart transplant scene.

Image

Also: one victim's eyes are gouged out in the most grisly murder scene.

A corporate black comedy clearly modeled on Battle Royale. It is a decent premise, but the film never focuses on them discussing who should live and die and why. Character development is also light and sketchy and there are very few novelty deaths. The corporate world satire is pretty neat though with tons of ironic signs sprouting slogans like "bringing the world together" and "together for the better" visible during the most gruesome kills.

Bonus Challenge: Why the film was banned:
SpoilerShow
Employees are lined up against a wall and shot dead execution style.

27. The Axe of Wandsbek (1951) Banned in GDR (East Germany) for political reasons

A haunting drama from East Germany, best comparable to The Informer as the protagonist's initial elation at receiving so much money (for standing in as a Nazi executioner) soon turns to regret and paranoia that his friends and neighbours will found out. There is an especially compelling subplot as he repeatedly tries to get rid of the titular axe that he used in the execution, only for it to keep returning to him. Great shadowy final shots too.

In addition to the film making the Communists seem antagonistic, the entire film is very critical of government corruption and pretty much suggests that all governments interfere in matters that they should not, as in the following the scene in which a prisoner explains why he isn't going to bother asking for clemency.

You are NOT allowed to see my listShow
1. The Boogey Man (1980) [video nasty]
2. Cairo Station (1958)
3. Orgy of the Dead (1965)
4. The Driller Killer (1979) [video nasty]
5. Island of Death (1976) [video nasty]
6. Friday the 13th (1980) [video nasty]
7. The Last House on the Left (1972) [video nasty]
8. The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)
9. Borat (2006)
10. Dawn of the Dead (1978) [video nasty]
11. Zombi 2 AKA Zombie (1979) [video nasty]
12. Saw (2004)
13. The Ten Commandments (1956)
14. The Immoral Mr. Teas (1959)
15. I Spit on Your Grave (1978) [video nasty]
16. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) [video nasty]
17. Grimm's Fairy Tales for Adults (1960) [video nasty]
18. Zombie Lake (1981) [video nasty]
Banned in UK for I'm guessing violence, possibly nudity. Visually, I enjoyed this quite a bit - great scenery and I thought the shot construction was quite nice. But dead nazis coming out of a lake and attacking people (mostly nude women) wasn't the most compelling plot, and the subplot of a dead nazi zombie's love for his living daughter was just misplaced.

What's the fastest way to find out if a movie is banned in a country? I can't seem to find out how to find specific movies in an ICM list.

I don't have a good answer for you - aside from working on the ICM lists in the OP and a few different wikipedia pages, I've just been googling things like "was [film] banned?" to check. I've been mostly unlucky with that, but have stumbled across a few sources.
