A hyper-jingoistic World World I drama. Released when Australia was fighting Germany in the Second World War, the heavy pro-war propaganda slant of the project is perhaps to be expected, but this none of the characters are especially likeable either, there is a dull romance in the mix, and the film's suggestions that the ANZACs triumphed in World War I because the enemy did not know how to respond to the boisterous Australian spirit is fanciful to say the least. Some of the battle scenes are well staged though with horses running only just past the camera, etc.

Maxwelldeux is the only participant who gave me a movie for the bonus challenge that I have seen previously, but as the rules state it was only movies in my ranked list (movies I had seen in the last close to 3 years) that were ineligible. Priscilla is something I watched maybe 15 years ago and the only thing I remembered was that it was better than I believed it would be and I actually enjoyed it when I thought I wouldn't. Well those memories were correct and I do actually enjoy this movie, the whole spectacular was great, but most of all the acting from it's main stars. I gave it 7/10 which is the same as I gave roadgames but Priscilla goes higher in my rankings so Maxwelldeux is now taken the lead from peeptoad.

With their passion for cinema, the film buff protagonists are very likeable and the framing story here is so appealing that it is actually a bit of a shame that the vast majority of the runtime is dedicated to the dubbed movie within. The dubbing is great though in general. The jokes are hit-and-miss and the constant, squeaky vocals get a little on the nerves, but the trio manage to poke fun at everything from the melodramatics of the Italian Hercules films to their homoerotic undertones during their dubbing. Add in Mad Max's Bruce Spence as wacky as ever and there is a lot to like here.

This NZ thriller gets off to a strong start with a young Sam Neill empathetic as an everyman who wishes to escape it all, and the initial scenes of his arrest and imprisonment in a dark blue cell (not unlike In the Mouth of Madness; see above) are excellent, channeling Kafka's The Trial. Things become a lot less interesting though once Neill flees custody. Warren Oates appears for good measure and has some very intense exchanges with Neill, but the politics that drive the final two thirds of the film are murky at best. Memorable ending though.

This is a very moody film, with lots of dark shots and a brooding score, and the junkyard setting nicely mirrors the protagonist's shattered dreams. Bruno Lawrence is also superb in the lead role, always sympathetic even as his actions turn irrational (most memorably, pulling a front door down) while Greer Robson is absolutely adorable as his doting daughter. Anna Maria Monticelli is not, however, very likeable as the frigid wife/mother in the tale, and the film's biggest weakness is the fact that we never quite feel for her side. A great strained father/daughter relationship movie in general though.

There are some very creepy moments here, like an unexpected hitchhiker ride, the moonlight shots and blues favoured throughout add oodles of atmosphere (see above) and the whisper-like music score by Jonathan Crayford is perfectly eerie. The story is a bit of a mess though with the plot mostly just consisting of Heather Bolton constantly being scared and unsettled. The abrupt ending also leaves much unexplained and unclear. Bolton is really good though, projecting a mixture of fear, uncertainty and genuine curiosity about her newly purchased car at every turn.

This has been cited as Jaws with a crocodile and there is a near identical scene in which the female lead spots a crocodile at a crowded creek and gets everybody running out in panic. The scene here though actually ends with a child eaten in one of a handful of ways in which the filmmakers overstep the boundaries of good taste to create more than just a Jaws copycat. The film also comes with a pro-ecological angle with the crocodile ultimately depicted as more of an innocent, hungry creature than a vicious fiend... but then it is a little weird that the film positions us to fear them too.

I remember renting Stunt Rock at a video store one time because the cover of the DVD had the following text:
"If you don't like Brian Trenchard-Smith, then fuck you." - Quentin Tarantino
A few hours later, I decided that I probably did not like Brian Trenchard-Smith. But I'm glad somebody does.

This Australian mockumentary follows a middle aged man who not only manages a portable toilet business, but takes pride in his work and loves the job. There is not quite enough to the premise for a full feature and subplots like a romantic fling and his father getting sick mostly just seem to exist to pad things out. Shane Jacobson is excellent throughout though, forced to wrestle with the disgust of others and disapproval by his father (who wants him to get a "real" job) while getting genuine satisfaction out of what he does, no matter what others think.

ANOTHER TRENCHARD-SMITH MARATHON!!!
40. The Stuntmen (1973)
41. Dangerfreaks (1989)
42. Deathcheaters (1976)
43. Stunt Rock (1980)

Well, Stunt Rock is not one of his best. The plot was nonsense. Although the magic prog rock stage show with the wizard dueling the devil shooting flames from its hands was entertaining. If I were to recommend some Trenchard-Smith to people I think I'd suggest Man from Hong Kong, Turkey Shoot and Dead End Drive In. If you don't like those, then you definitely aren't into him. He also did Leprechaun 4: In Space which is hilariously over the top but that one is...an acquired taste...

An Australian thriller shot on location in Perth (oh, yes! -- though no idea where they got the snow). The script has thought-provoking ideas about how fantasy and reality are "chemically identical" to the brain and how to "patch a brain like software", but the plot is a little murky with it unclear whether the team is working on inducing false memories or virtual reality. It also takes quite a while for the film's thriller angle to kick into gear, but this is a fairly engaging watch for what it is. And it was admittedly quite interesting playing "spot the location", though the exteriors here are minimal.

This film gained some attention in its day for Cate Blanchett placing the reverse of the posh and regal roles that she is best known for, but her character is not especially likeable and while her frustration is easy to sympathise with, her misery mostly comes down to poor choices on her behalf. Hugo Weaving actually gets the film's best moments as her still-addicted stepfather, though it is a part so underwritten that he appear to be her boyfriend for half the film. Noni Hazlehurst also has a few strong moments and the soft, pensive music score is divine... but I ultimately disliked this.

I remember when this came on theatres. Premiering a decade after the previous ones this was something nobody wanted to see. And it is as disappointing as one would expect.

With zombies films a dime a dozen, Wyrmwood introduces two new ideas: that zombie blood can be used as fuel and that some individuals can control zombies via telepathy. While this lead to some nifty thrills, it is unclear why other fuels have stopped working and how her psychic abilities arose. The film also dedicates too much time to action scenes with the brother when Berynn Schwerdt's mad doctor is a kookier and more interesting subplot. The whole thing is decently filmed and the new ideas have potential, but overall this feels like just another zombie film.

Before director/writer Paul Fenech would make his shows Pizza and Housos and their follow-on movies he would start his career making a more serious film about 3 people trapped under a collapsed supermarket and all they have is their imagination.

Maybe a % breakdown of films watched per Oceanic country (though no idea if that's too hard to generate).

Oh, and I would like you to watch all of the AU films that I have promoted in the DTC Bonus Challenge while you are asking for what we want. :whistling:

Well I'm at least going to watch Dr. Plonk, if I can get to the rest I will but I have a big back log of selected movies already so I'm not very confident I will get to them.

I thought Oz was a prison with flying monkeys?Show
1. 40,000 Horsemen (Charles Chauvel, 1940)
2. Long Weekend (Colin Eggleston, 1978)
3. Australia (Baz Luhrman, 2008)
4. They Shall Not Grow Old (Peter Jackson, 2018)

Cinema. I was iffy about paying money for this but given that a) it counts for a challenge and b) I've seen just about all of Jackson's films in the cinema, and c) not much else was playing nearby, I figured WTF. Well, now, WTF is my thought when it comes to the reviews for this, frankly. I get that it's an impressive technical achievement of course - the adjusting of the frame rate/speed and the cleaning up of the images more so than the colorization, which doesn't look a whole lot better to these eyes than what Ted Turner was doing 30+ years ago - but I guess overall I am left with a big "so what"? I'm sure this might be very impressive to those who haven't seen a lot of war documentary footage or some of the more visceral WWI films, but to me this offered little that was new, apart from some of the recollections of soldiers about their treatment after the war - how quickly all was forgotten. Otherwise, it just didn't move me or enlighten me to any particular extent. Jackson's half-hour making-of talk that followed the main feature was actually more interesting and illuminating.

5. Alvin Puprple (Tim Burstall, 1973)

Bizarre exploitation-comedy about a man who is really good at sex becoming a male prostitute servicing wealthy and repressed housewives under the guise of it all being therapy. This has some nice snappy day-glo colors and I suppose it's historically interesting as an example of just how racy films could be in this period - this is probably the first Aussie film I've seen with so much nudity but obviously it was a worldwide trend at the time - but to me it got tiresome pretty quickly and it was only intermittently amusing. Graeme Blundell is pretty good as the title character, though his innocence throughout is just too weird in the context of the film.

6. Dr. Plonk (Rolf de Heer, 2007)

Visually this is quite a brilliant recreation of the silent comedy feature genre, with a much more accurate "feel" for this type of film than The Artist or even some of Guy Maddin's work - the slightly choppy movement (I'm guessing this was filmed at 16-20 fps or made to mimic it), the look and wording of the title cards, much of the slapstick - all would be at home in 1918 or 1923. But the perfect mimicking of style is not unfortunately matched by the storytelling, which I found pretty dull and quick to wear out it's welcome. There's a fine art to slapstick, chase scenes, and characterizations without the use of sound, and I guess for me de Heer and his crew don't often get it, and if some of the chases and stuntwork in the second half of the film are really good, there are also problems like the character of Plonk''s assistant Paulus who hits the stupidity meter hard enough that it ceases to be amusing. I certainly appreciated the time travel concept, which I don't believe was ever really used in the silent era, and I mostly liked Nigel Martin as the titular mad scientist but overall this scores a big ol' meh for me.

2. The last wave (Oz 77) - rewatch
Despite only about 1/3 of the dialog being audible without subs, this made a lot more sense to me than it did 30 years ago. High time I rewatched it. My kind of horror movie.

The first third here is not especially remarkable, focusing on the romance and courtship between the mentally ill couple when medicated. The final hour or so is very interesting though as they go off the pills and try to suppress their mental instabilities and survive on their own for the health of an unborn child. Jacqueline McKenzie has a particularly interesting character with her obsessive compulsive mannerisms and superstitions with numbers (a shopping centre incident is very memorable). The film gives us less of a sense of lead actor John Lynch's mental illness though.

Locked in a sound-proof room during a clinical drug study, eight strangers struggle with what to do when the pills start to have adverse effects on them this Australian comedy, horror, thriller and sci-fi blend. With the comedy in heavy focus, the first twenty or so minutes of The Subjects are not easy to sit through with Emily Wheaton absolutely grating. As soon as the horror angle ignites though (around 22 minutes in), everything gets thrown in an entirely different direction, and the results are akin to Escape Room meets Fermat's Room meets Primer in the best possible way.

21. Brothers' Nest (2018) Australia

Image

Best entered into with as few expectations as possible, this much darker comedy from the team behind Kenny involves two brothers who arrive at an isolated cottage early one morning to plan a crime. As the film progresses, we gradually learn more about their crime, victim and motives. The first act is terrific with lots of comic banter between the brothers as they meticulously map their actions - and things only subsequently get more interesting as the plot becomes quite twisted. The performances are top rate and a Carter Burwellesque music score definitely gives it a Coen Brothers vibe.
