Re: Doubling the Canon 2019 Update - Phase I: Nominations

#201

Hope the formating is ok:

À propos de Nice (1930)
Afgrunden/The Abyss (1910)
Colloque de chiens/Dog's Dialouge (1977)
Decameron (1971)
Die große Ekstase des Bildschnitzers Steiner/the great ecstasy of woodcarver steiner (1974)
La ville des pirates/City of Pirates (1983)
Naked Kiss (1964)
Nymph()maniac (2013)
Perceval le Gallois (1978)
Porto da Minha Infância/The Porto of my Childhood (2001)
The Secret of NIMH (1982)
Yoidore tenshi/Drunken Angel (1948)

In case of non-acceptance (I'm particularly unsure if Nymph()maniac is accepted like that):

1. The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes (1971)
2. Le signe du lion/The Sign of Leo (1962)
3. Random Harvest (1942)

À propos de Nice is already nominated, replaced with The Act of Seeing.

I added Nymph()maniac Vol 1 for now until Angel makes the call. I assume you're saying that if it can't be Vol 1+2 then you'd prefer Signe du lion instead of just Vol 1?

Allowed Nymphomaniac 1&2 as a single nomination... although I would have preferred Random Harvest. :P

Yeah, it was because of Part I+II but I thought if Olympia is fine in TSPDT then Nymp()maniac shoud be one nomination in DTC too. I would find it hard to rate it separately. Thanks for letting it fly btw and sry about Random Harvest :whistling:

I'm always at a complete loss for nominating strategy. All I know is it seems like mainstream films, comedies and hip, counterculture-type films don't do well. And the obscurity of others' nominations really baffles me. I've barely seen a quarter of the films on the nominations list, and it looks like 485 of the 1120 films have fewer than 100 checks. Do you nominate what you like, what you pragmatically believe others will rate well or what you "objectively" believe deserves to rank among history's top 2000 films?

I guess I'll post my nominations later. I have about 70 candidates left on my candidates list, and narrowing them down further is just a coin flip.

In general the thinking is "is this a film more than 15% voters who have seen it will hate or consider unworthy (a 0 or 1 vote)?" If yes then then it's an uphill battle, if no then ask "is this a film at least a quarter of voters who have seen it will have strong votes in favour?" If no then you'd best be hoping for a ton of 4 votes, because 50/50 3 and 4 votes isn't getting in.

Of course the thinking is usually not directly the above, but rather the consequences of the above. The more mainstream a film, regardless of quality and genre, the more likely random detractors will have seen it and the stronger the support needed to overcome it. Comedies (and action and horror and sci-fi) are very subjective so, again, more likely to have detractors even if it's not viewed by that many people because more people will blind watch a comedy that has a bit of buzz of some sort, than a 3 hour subtitled drama with equivalent buzz and even with equal expectations and interest more people are likely to be disappointed by the comedy. An obscure film is likely to have mostly been watched by people explicitly seeking it out, so will have a higher hit percentage among its viewers. There is also a bit of a voter bias towards certain forms of arthouse/classics/experimental films and against mainstream/genre films, but I don't think it's anywhere near as strong as the results would have you believe. If everyone watched and voted on every film the results would undoubtedly be different.

All that said, I think there are a lot of nomination strategies with different goals. Some people nominate their favourites, chances of success be damned. Some people nominate with the intent that an obscure favourite will get watched a bit without much thought of whether it will get enough, or the right kind of, votes to make it on the list. Some probably do try to nominate on some objective "this ought to be in the canon but isn't" standard, but I haven't really noticed much of that. I nominate with some mix of the above. I go through my favourites and try to find things I really like (9 or 10) and which I think might have enough support to make it. Beyond that I don't worry much about it because I've found that while I know which films have very low chance of success I can't really distinguish between a film that ends up at 3.5 and a film that ends up at 4.

OK...thanks.

Oh, and I forgot to mention even another possible nomination strategy: "Which zero-list films would I like to become official checks?"

Did you do the extracurricular work of merging the two IMDb name pages over which her work (the little of it that is listed) used to be spread out in the past?

I can't remotely justify why I'm down to these picks, but I'm going with....

Macbeth (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040558/)
Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073424/)
Morgiana (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124012/)

From Morn to Midnight (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0011833/)
Successive Slidings of Pleasure (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070116/)

alternates:

A Chairy Tale (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050534/)
Black Test Car (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056158/)

Throwing 'em at the wall to see what sticks.

For some reason this gets harder every year. Half of these were first viewings, or notable rewatches from last year, the other half mostly films that have been tried before, and failed. Better luck this time?

Act of Violence (1949)
Gate of Hell (1953)
States (1967)
Kamouraska (1973)
Xtro (1982)
The Gold Diggers (1983)
Sweetie (1989)
Side/Walk/Shuttle (1992)
Batang West Side (2001)
At the First Breath of Wind (2002)
Closed Curtain (2013)
Manuscripts Don't Burn (2013)

alternates

From the Journals of Jean Seberg (1995)
Time Regained (1999)
Two Women (1999)

Okay, last two nominations before I forget:

Staying with the AU/NZ theme (since these will be Challenge doubles). Both on 0 official lists (as of yet) and both eligible for the next 500<400 update:

End Play (1976) https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/end+play/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072938/

Summerfield (1977) https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/summerfield/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076782/

I'll post my noms later today/tomorrow.
Remember that you and cinephage have got an extra nomination for services rendered.
Thanks for the reminder. I hope you had people from dvdclassik, but nobody told me they would join, I'm afraid.
My final nomination is a japanese film, and a great zombie flick I hope more people will watch.

I hope you had people from dvdclassik, but nobody told me they would join, I'm afraid.
A pity. New blood is needed!

Maybe, hopefully, they join in the next phase?

Ahoi!
My twelve picks:
The Incident - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061814/

Alternates:
The Insider - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0140352/
The incident was already nominated, replaced with The Insider
IMDb/ICM lists updated.

There's at least one difference from my list. I'll post what I find in a few minutes.
Edit: Actually it might just be the 2nd volume from Nymphomaniac

Final Edit: Yup. That's it. Everything else matches.
ICM list is now in ballot order: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/dtc+ ... ulanarchy/
I'll reorder the imdb list later.

IMDb list doesn't have the same number of films as the ballot and the iCM list.

It's missing Heimat 2 because of url stuff. I'll put it on there when I reorder it.
