2. Elena and Her Men (Renoir, 1958). Eh. I like Ingrid Bergman but on the whole, this is a minor Renoir. The comedy doesn't really work for me and everything's a little too "studio" for my liking.

22. The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933) - 8/10
Liked this one way more than I had anticipated.

Okay, things are starting to finally pick up. Highlights include the $1250 bug that they hide inside a tennis ball and what happens to the ball, as well as Ziggy's guide dog duck. Some really good dialogue too; "I love the job" but "the job doesn't love you" goes one exchange between Lt. Daniels and his wife. Lots more McNulty side drama too (and it is so nice to see him finally get back in the police action). His drunk driving in the precredits sequence of 'Duck and Cover' was also very intense.

It is nice to see the full crew including McNulty back in action. The team share quite a bit of rapport and banter well with each other after spending so much time together. Most memorable here is the raid on a brothel using illegal immigrants with McNulty literally caught with his pants down, "there was two of them; I was outnumbered". Great distortion effects after Ziggy's shout-out too and I liked Prez standing up to his uncle. I am still not sure though why we keep following Stringer, Avon and the drug dealers at the same time.

Things finally come together in the waterfront smuggling operation. Really nice to see Amy Ryan get in on the action too (the part where she follows one guy through a hotel is amazingly intense). An okay end to Season 2, I guess, but the conclusion here did not impact on me as much as the end of Season 1, and overall I would say that I definitely enjoyed the first season more, but even so, I will continue onto Season 3...

Incredibly hilarious with such a high gag per minute ratio that it leaves no time for rest in between. Recommended.

Loving the stats - thanks for doing this! But since you asked (and in order of desire)...

1. Most obscure by ICM checks (I'm not plugged into IMDB like I am ICM)
2. Least obscure by ICM checks (opposite above, for the same reasons)
3. Total number of unique years watched, in addition to the range

Also high-five me for winning the "Shortest films watched" category... :circle:

LOL at your last line. :D Thanks for the response. It's nice to know that the fun stats are being read. I certainly appreciate them when you include them in your Challenges, even if I seldom reply.

Regarding #1 and #2, I suppose I could do that if I imported the private IMDb list (where I have been keeping track of this stuff) into iCM. Would take some time, but I guess it's doable.

#3 is also doable, but I would need to do it manually. Would probably be easier to just state the years without any watches.

Oh, and on the subject of requests, I would love love love it if you could include a "most common seen films" section in your own weekly stats. :)

Season 3 opens with what seems to be a return to the plot dynamics of Season 1 with the Barksdale drug ring once again in centre focus - something that gives validity to how Season 2 kept weirdly cutting to back the subplot amidst the Russian/Greek smuggling operation. Whatever the case, it is always nice to see more of Bubbles. Let's see where this season goes...

I still haven't watched The Other Side of the Wind.
I feel ashamed as I've backed the Indiegogo project a few years ago (and I want to see my name on the credits)

As max has stated, most of the seasons start quite slow, but there is still quite a bit of interest here as the plot has completely gone back to the drug dealing of Season 1. Most memorable is a beautiful night time scene in which Stringer is told to "keep it boring" to get the police to lay off him. There are also several amusing moments as the drug dealers find sneaky ways of tricking each other's security detail to get into their houses.

Keep 'em coming! Let me know if there are any other stats that you'd like included in the next update and I'll see what I can do.

Yeah, #1 and #2 are definitely ICM imports. And #3 is super quick if you're good with Excel and pivot tables, but by all means don't spend much time on it.

And I've been skipping the "most common scene films" in my own stats because I don't have good data integrity on film titles in my spreadsheet - I copy what people post to Excel and run stats off that. So I have to deal with misspellings, reused titles, years being off, format/language changes, etc. Solaris is a great example. If I go by title alone, you've watched it three times, and no one else has. But we know you watched three different versions. So if I go by title + year, it looks like it's only been watched by one person, which is also wrong - I have a Solaris (1972), Solyaris (1972), and a Solyaris (1971), each of which show up separately. There are definitely solutions to this, but they're a little time-consuming right now.

But yeah - I'll include what I can in the stats this week in my thread.

10. Jour de fête (1949) France 5 official lists 1 374 checks
I gave these a chance as Mon Oncle was bit better than Playtime and Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot but now they are back to not having a plot and not being funny. Could probably been better as shorts. Well, at least I know what kind of comedic sense Rosenbaum has so I'll stay away from his favorite comedies.

Highlights of these two episodes include Stringer going legit (at least on the outside) and facing off with a McNulty annoyed that he cannot get to him. There is also Bubbles waxing poetic about being a snitch, "do it like a living, you're a professional", to a friend who just wants easy cash from con jobs. Things started to look a little soap operaish with Lt. Daniels and Rhonda hooking up, leading to tension between Daniels and McNulty, but that seems to have been placed on the backburner for now. And the repeated attempts to force drugs off the suburban streets into abandoned alleyways are really quite amusing.

29. Como Era Gostoso o Meu Francês (1971) - 6/10
Such a fun title: How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman. I found this to be an overall strange and at times mesmerizing adventure, though the film couldn’t maintain that captivating state for me throughout its runtime.

Lots to report on since I last posted an updated here, but in short, I think I am enjoying Season 3 more than Season 1, i.e. it's probably my favourite season so far, all dependent on how well things wrap up in the next three episodes. The biggest 'aww' for me here comes with Prez, who I was getting to love so much as a caring and passionate individual after I initially decided that I didn't like his recklessness and attitude in Season 1. There is also further developments in the police's attempts to move drug traffic off suburban streets, D'Angelo's mum catching wind of the fact that her son was murdered, McNulty told that he'll need to find a life after the case is over, Kima facing up to the fact that she never wanted a child, and a lot of intense moments of trying to get wire taps green lighted for disposal mobile phones.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

4. Of Time and the City (Terence Davies, 2008) 5/10 JR #1085

The narration often brings little nuance or removes depth to the images. At its best when he gets more introspective.

5. Une femme mariée: Suite de fragments d'un film tourné en 1964 (Jean-Luc Godard, 1964) 8/10

The café sequence is my highlight of the year so far.

Season 3 concludes on more of a whimper than a bang, but overall I found this season just as riveting as Season 1, if not more so. It is certainly easy to see why the second-last episode has such an astronomically high rating and it is really quite a testament to the power of the series that it makes me feel deeply whenever the drug dealer characters end up dying even though they are the antagonists per se here. Great performances whatever the case from Michael Potts as the eloquent 'Bowtie', Idris Elba and Wood Harris in these final few episodes of the season. Onto Season 4 I go; I'm now 62% of the way towards getting a single coveted Official Check for the series.

Season 4 gets off to a solid start with an intense precredits nail gun buying scene. There is also a new lot of shady youths to look out for. Best of all though, is Prez making a welcome return to the series, having changed profession and gone into teaching. I'm a bit skeptical of how he will figure back into the rest of the plot, but I guess that I will just have to wait and see...
