Year by Year Polls: 2006 Results

#1

Post by flaiky » December 23rd, 2018, 10:35 pm

Generating the results was such a breeze this time, so I must insist that any thanks gets directed towards Maxwelldeux, who created a spreadsheet for me. Max = LEGEND

Number of voters: 55
Number of films mentioned: 336

All films that received at least 30 points and 3 votes make the final list.

I guess I really need to give this runaway winner another go...

A norwegian film in the top 10. That's a first?

Not even Oslo, 31. august managed that.

I don't know how to react to Borat being higher than Climates.

Yeah, Reprise must be the most surprising success. I need to see it. Little Children is also much higher than I ever would have guessed.

And because the results include IMDb links now, making an iCM list was a breeze as well. :)

The highest unseen movie for me is a movie I even made myself.

Thank you for hosting, Flaiky!

I'm not sure if the results are surprising or not (does anybody have the last 2006 poll?), but there were a few shocks for me:

- Only my #1 made the top 25 ... (Brand Upon the Brain), and only 3-4 films from my top 10 made the top 50
- And on that note, Rescue Dawn outside the top 50?! :o
- There is actually a film I have not seen in the top 10, Little Children
- The cult favorite Southland Tales, which used to divide FG on the middle, is nowhere to be seen

On a similar note I am very surprised I Don't Want to Sleep Alone made the top 25, and I feel guilty not watching it in time, as I could possibly have helped push it higher up.

Other unseen films in the top 30:

Old Joy
Black Book
Efter brylluppet
Red Road

My top 10 films to see from 2006 (personal watchlist):

I Don't Want to Sleep Alone
Science of Sleep
Fireworks Wednesday
Direktøren for det hele
I Served the King of England
Longing
Black Book
Ostrov
Coeurs
Climates

I was going to vote in this but then I realised most of my highest rated films I haven’t even seen since 2006, and I was 15 and newly into film and don’t know if I’d feel the same way about any of them as I don’t really remember them. Didn’t really feel comfortable voting for those films but it seems like all they did pretty well anyway. Really need to watch a bunch of other stuff from those earlier years, guess I can use this as a watchlist!

@Gloede, yep, you were the only voter for Southland Tales.

2006 was never done on CFB, in this format, but I used to save the FG results for recommendations so I do have those:

1. The Departed – 217 [4]
2. The Lives of Others – 171 [3]
3. Children of Men – 165 [1]
4. Pan’s Labyrinth – 161 [2]
5. The Prestige – 109 [6]
6. Borat – 95 [9]
7. INLAND EMPIRE – 93 [5]
8. Blood Diamond – 83 [new]
9. Casino Royale – 81 [7]
10. Apocalypto – 74 [14]
11. Letters from Iwo Jima – 55 [10]
12. Little Miss Sunshine – 55
13. Black Book – 54
14. Marie Antoinette – 50
15. Paprika – 47
16. Little Children -46
17. United 93 – 46
18. 300 – 45
19. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer – 41
20. This is England – 41 [8]
21. Babel – 39
22. Brand Upon the Brain – 39
23. Inside Man – 39
24. Pursuit of Happyness – 39
25. The Last King of Scotland - 37
26. Volver – 37

I think the highest average rank is interesting, so I removed any non-ranked lists and did it properly:

1. Inland Empire (even with 22 votes...so if you like this film, you really like it)
2. Miami Vice
3. Exiled
4. Brand Upon the Brain
5. Planet Earth
6. Tekkonkinkreet
7. Memories of Matsuko
8. Still Life
9. The Illusionist
10. I Don't Want to Sleep Alone

Thanks! Still no Rescue Dawn, so I suppose I shouldn't have been too surprised, and I suppose Southland Tales slowly dropped off the map after a few years. :(

The next poll after the one for 2018 will be for 1932.

Yeah, 2018 seems a little too early, running the 1932 poll first and having the 2018 poll closer to the awards season would make more sense imo.

Also, there's usually a long delay between the results thread and the submission thread for the next poll, why not create one straight after the results been unveiled?

I'd say it's usually a week, sometimes two (I purposely left it 2 weeks this time because I knew the 2018 poll couldn't/shouldn't start until mid-Jan, and there would have been a really long gap). The idea is pretty much one poll per month, which does make sense and there are already several polls open here at any one time.

Rufus is planning to let the 2018 poll run until Oscar night, it will be open longer than usual. Running the 1932 poll first could be an alternative 'time killer', I agree.

Congratulations on your successful technology implementation, flaiky!

Glad to see so much diversity (the canon is not strong enough yet), even if the wrong films top the list (as usual). :P

Thanks flaiky! Not at all surprised to see Lynch top things here, I'm sure he wouldn't have on the CFB, even top 5 I think might've been unlikely. As to Little Children, it did get pretty great reviews here in the USA and was I think generally pretty well-loved. It's on my list pretty high but it is one of those that I wonder about, whether it will hold up. I didn't get to much new stuff for this one and have a dozen in the top half unseen, a pretty poor percentage for me. Someday....

I'm supposed to do 1932 but with family coming there's no way I would even think about starting it until at least the end of the first week of January. So I dunno, wasn't really planning on running that before the 2018 poll. I'd be willing to entertain more discussion I suppose in a week or so though.

For what it's worth, I am up to three viewings for Little Children so far and it has only climbed in my esteem upon repeat viewings. I was actually underwhelmed by it when I saw it theatrically; coming on the heels on the amazing In the Bedroom, I was disappointed by how relatively little the film explored JEH's sex offender character. Upon revision though, this is very deliberate; the film is about how all the other characters use him as as a scapegoat of sorts, projecting all their fears and anxieties on what is only ever a potential threat that he poses. And the title actually, I believe, refers to all the adults who behave like little children in the film.

Good to know. I thought about giving it another go after re-watching Watchmen a few months ago, for Jackie Earle Haley's performance, but it probably didn't qualify for any challenge at that time :$

Thanks for the results, Flaiky (and Maxwell!).

'Little Children' is an extraordinary film. Would perhaps have got a 10 from me if the sex offender hadn't gone about

cutting off his penis.
I'm not sure that it was really necessary to go that far.
That's all, folks!

Personally, I'd prefer to have the 1932 poll put off until after the 2018 poll.
