Methods
Pretty simple methodology - I went to the Challenges Index (thanks for keeping that up-to-date, btw) and followed links to all the official challenges. I copied the final results (usually in the first post, though there were a couple of exceptions) into Excel. I did a little data cleanup (using consistent usernames and getting the results to appear as numbers), then assigned ranks and computed scoring (details below). From there, it was just some minor Excel magic, and boom - results.

Scoring
I used a version of NASCAR scoring. Points are based on the number of participants in a challenge and the final rank. So, if there were 20 participants in a challenge, the 1st place person would get 20 points, 2nd place gets 19 points, 3rd place gets 18 points, and so on. For ties, I assigned the average of the points that would have been earned for all those ranks. So, continuing with this example, if two people tied for 4th place (out of 20), each of them would receive (17+16)/2 = 16.5 points. The person in 6th would receive 15 points, and so on. Finally, to be included, you had to have watched at least one film for the official challenge.

I see what you're saying, but it's just a weird quirk of the scoring. flavo5000 and jdidaco had slightly higher average ranks, and 72allinncallme had the misfortune of dominating some less popular challenges (most notably the Indian challenge, with only 11 participants, so only 11 points for 1st place).

I was super impressed with albajos and cinephage for participating in all 18 challenges so far this year, as well as you (frbrown), sol, 3eyes, and ororama for being there more than half the time.

Of course, I'm a huge stats nerd, so I find all of this interesting.

Since we have all the old challenges archived, we could actually go back and figure out who "won" the annual Official Challenge Leaderboard every year. Might be fun for those so inclined.

This is an interesting, and rather unexpected, at least for me, result. As I'm a slow viewer, I almost never win challenges, but I usually enjoy participating in most. This ranking rewards consistency rather than performance on a concentrated period, and this is closer to my approach to film-watching.
Diversity preserves me from movie fatigue (at least until now).

This is a fantastic idea. I hope you keep it up since it will give me much needed extra motivation to participate in more Challenges, both this month and into the future (though I'm not sure how I'll cope with 36 Official Challenges next year). Really cool in case to rank #2.

Even more impressive considering that I wasn't registered here in January. This means that I have participated in 14 out of 16 possible Challenges. Didn't realise that my participation was anywhere near that high!

I think the accuracy of total films seen can be disputed since there are probably a few dozen films that I have counted towards two simultaneous Challenges, and I wouldn't be alone with that.

If we assume the total is accurate though, that means that 399 out of 517 films (77%) I have seen so far this year have been for Official Challenges.

Oh, wait, that number is excluding Horror Challenge viewings, so the percentage is probably even higher. Some shorts in there too, but I'm guessing around 80%.

Hmm, I think number of films watched should get included in the score somehow. Perhaps; All movies watched in all challenges divided on number of challenges participated. So in Albajos case he gets 290.5 points (249.5p + 741/18 = 290.5). But maybe I’m just saying that because I think I would benefit from that.

It doesn't look that way to me. I participated in 13 challenges and won none; 72allinn participated in 8 and won 3 (and watched 300 films more than I did), and he's ranked below me. Tourdesb participated in 4 challenges and won 2, and he only ranks at #20.

Only 6 people participated in more than half of the challenges, and all 6 of us are ranked in the top 10.

Glad you all found this interesting! I'll keep going back in time, and create an all time leader board, as well as ones for each individual year. With the way I've structured the data (well, once I'm through with this), I can also easily generate leader boards for regular challenges (e.g., an all-time leaderboard for the official Horror challenges), as interest dictates.

Yeah - like frbrown said, I think more challenges is better. I'm actually a decent example - I participated in 9 of the challenges, but never really went after a win. A small handful of films each time, and I'm in the top quarter. Even 1 or 2 films, which may count for a challenge, even though you're not actively pursuing that challenge, will move you up the leaderboard pretty quick.

Very true, and not really something I can control - I just consider it an embedded bonus in the scoring.

Hmm, I think number of films watched should get included in the score somehow. Perhaps; All movies watched in all challenges divided on number of challenges participated. So in Albajos case he gets 290.5 points (249.5p + 741/18 = 290.5).

I understand your point, but I disagree. I view the challenges as a fun way to get out of your comfort zone and watch things you wouldn't ordinarily be drawn to. Even if you watch one film, it should count towards the challenge.

Then there's the practical issue you bring up about the scoring system, which is an open question and worth discussing. I chose this version of scoring because I wanted to give higher weight to wins in challenges with more participants; winning a challenge with 50 participants is definitely more impressive than winning a challenge with 5 participants. Off the top of my head, I see a few possible scoring systems:

a) The one I'm currently using (see first post)
b) A version of above, with each challenge weighted equally. 1st place gets 100 points, 2nd place gets 99 points, etc. Ties handled the same. With this, coming in last place in the Indian challenge (with only 11 participants) would get you 90 points (assuming no ties). Where as coming in last place in a challenge with 50 participants would get you 51 points (again, assuming no ties).
c) A percentage-based system. Each challenge is worth 100 points, and they get assigned based on the percent of total films watched. For example, in the Indian challenge, 72allinncallme would have received 52.04 points for utterly dominating the challenge, having watched 51 films of 98 total watches (i.e., (51/98)*100 = 52.04).
d) Others...

So what are people's thoughts on scoring?

I also disagree. When someone posts his participation in a challenge, he/she becomes part of it. There is an awareness, an involvement, there. However limited, this involvement reveals an intent to be part of the event, of sharing with the other participants.

I wouldn't discount this... In my case, I know it can weigh on my viewing choices, even though it's only one or two movies (I usually pick more, but get distracted for whatever reason)...

If you view the points as purely rankings-based (looking up), then yes, what you said makes more sense. In your example, those three people who tied for 3rd place have only two people above them in rankings, so each of them could earn 6 points. But it is also equally true that those three people who tied for 3rd place tied for fourth from the bottom, so if you allocate scores bottom up, they should all receive 4 points. The current scoring system splits the difference.

Another way too look at it is that there are [N(N+1)]/2 points to allocate, where N is the number of participants in a given challenge (this is the sum of the numbers from 1 to N). With 8 participants, this would be 36 total points to allocate. The current scoring allocates exactly 36 points, whereas the rankings-based scoring would assign 39 points (and would assign more if there were additional ties). Think prize money - the three people who tied for 3rd would each receive the average of the purses of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes.

OK. All that said, I'm certainly open to modifying the scoring based on what consensus we reach. To be honest, my default option is going to be sticking with what I've done, largely out of laziness. But I'm happy to change the scoring based on thoughts around here.

Finally, bonus points - I'm cool with that. Thoughts?

I'm not going to weigh in on scoring, but I do appreciate this and would be delighted to see the other years/total stats in whatever form.

I must say I was a bit startled to find myself in the top 10 as I haven't participated nearly this much this year as before. Until recently I have tended to report anything I happen to see that fits a current challenge I'm not otherwise interested in, but I don't really see any virtue in that.

Well good news for you, sortile9io: You're moving up a spot.

For one of Buksemannen's scores, I accidentally tallied "110" when it should have been a "10". So that 159 will drop to a 59.

I've corrected it in my data file, and I'll update the tables when I add in the 2014 data.

Updated the first post.

This update adds in the stats for 2014 in a separate table, and updates the overall leaderboard to include all official challenges 2014-present. It also corrects a few errors I've come across, including the one sortile9io pointed out last update. As such, all tables have been updated.

Also, for those of you who have changed usernames, please run through the Overall table - if you see both of your names listed, let me know somehow, and I'll merge the two. I've caught a couple of these already as I'm cleaning the data, but I'm betting I'm missing some.

That was my plan all along... I let others win and pass in front of me, and lost to more than 100 challenges of all kind, knowing that eventually I would have the last laugh.
And I don't intend to win either of the challenges I'm doing right now either... Justice will come to me in the end !!!
