The Year-by-Year Polls Preparation Challenge



Prepare for the upcoming Year-by-Year polls (the next 3 scheduled years). It's also allowed to watch movies from the result of the previous challenged year until the results of the next one appears: 1951.

Goal:
Watch as many films from the scheduled years to be polled as you can (or want to).
Currently those years are: 2008, 1966 and 1944.

Rules:
- A feature film (anything over 40 minutes) counts as one entry
- A total of 60 minutes of short films count as one entry
- Mini-series are allowed. TV-series aren't. In case of mini-series an episode over 40 minutes count as one entry or a total of 60 minutes counts as one entry
- Rewatches are allowed and good for the soul
- Challenge runs from April 19th 2017 and is ongoing

1. 2005-1 Grizzly Man 8/10
Herzog found a very interesting subject in Timothy Treadwell (and his 'found footage') and treats him neither condescending nor glorifies his actions in any way. Doesn't reach Lektionen in Finsternis but this might be my second favourite of his documentaries. Will certainly make my list

2. Unser täglich Brot 2005 — a.k.a. Our Daily Bread 7/10
Documentary with avantgarde influences about the world of processed food. Especially sad to see animals being treated as a product that needs to be processed as efficiently as possible. The stages of suffering are just are simply steps until the product can be transformed into money.


3. Batalla en el cielo 2005 — a.k.a. Battle in Heaven 8/10
I can see why people would hate this but it's a worthy follow-up of his great Japon. A lot of style, not a lot of story, a lot of mood and effective use of music and sound. A pleasure for the eyes, in all its uglyness. (Maybe I should give Post Tenebras Lux a second chance)

Of course it's a bit poverty porn but does it really feel like that? We don't really learn a lot about most individual characters but about their surroundings. And all the places have their own depressing beauty. Gorgeously shot.
