Turning over a new leaf

I saw the first episode of Australia with Simon Reeve on BBC TV Simon starts in the centre' of the country and on through South Australia, via the Indian Pacific Railway until he reaches the west coast city of Perth.
On the way, he joins a rancher in the outback and takes part in a camel round-up. This mad aventure, involving specially adapted off-road vehicles and a chopper, is part of an ongoing effort to stop the damaging spread of up to a million feral camels across the country.
Simon also passes through Australia's wine country and to the lucrative tuna fishing city of Port Lincoln, and he investigates the impact these trades are having on the environment. In Western Australia, he joins a 21st century gold rush - part of the resource boom that has made Australia one of the richest countries in the world. At one point he joins those still searching and finding gold, one large piece worth say 30 thousand Australian dollars.
Finally in Perth, Simon discovers a full scale British invasion. Working in a mine or driving a lorry can bring a salary of a hundred thousand pounds a year, as evidenced when Simon meets a former binman from hull who is now living the dream, with a beautiful house in the sun, private pool and his very own boat.
So Australia is booming still due to massive resources.

Thanks, Cippenham for starting the thread. Australia worth watching, then?
Mad Men tonight: The most frightening scene I've seen since the homeless woman in Mulholland Drive. I hope someone else watched it so they could experience the terror as well. Or tell me that I was crazy for thinking it was scary

I haven't been watching films lately because I got hooked on "Criminal minds".
It's not great but it's addictive as all series are.
I haven't watched Mad men and I'm afraid to start watching it because I'll spend another month without films. I hear that it's really great.

GoT is good, but unlike in Season 2 I really am not a fan of most of the changes they've made from the books. They're getting really ridiculous about
Currently watching the Human Planet miniseries. It's alright and pretty.
Will probably watch some of the new Xbox announcement later today.

showing nudity in the last two episodes. It really lingers on it way too much. While some of it makes sense, such as Daenerys standing there naked in front of New Guy, the changes to the Melisandra plotline are laughable. I wonder if anyone cares about the Bran plotline.

Yes the first part of the Australia series was good, shows lots of people doing well over there, I never knew camels were such a problem though..

Of course all these TV shows and many films can be streamed if you have good Wifi, but of course I would not suggest people do that!

Which scene? It was a batshit insane episode. I loved that scene even if it was probably a hallucination. I meant the scenes with the elderly black woman. Scared the shit out of me. I honestly thought she was going to murder children in their sleep.sebby on May 21 2013, 02:17:37 PM wrote:Which scene? It was a batshit insane episode. The pilot is easily one of the weakest episodes of Mad Men. It starts to hit it's stride about episode 7 of season 1 and then it ranges from really good to masterpiece from then on. Best show on television if I can forget how enjoyable Breaking Bad is to watch.
I'd agree with this. I gave up on Mad Men after 5 episodes when it first aired, but gave it another shot around season 4 due to the constant MM jizz sessions I'd run into on AV Club and the like.funkybusiness on May 21 2013, 05:40:36 PM wrote:The pilot is easily one of the weakest episodes of Mad Men. I'd comfortably say it's the best dramatic show ever aired on TV. It's never had the dips in quality that The Wire, The Sopranos, Twin Peaks, Lost, etc., have had for a string of episodes or even an entire season.
Still don't think Mighty would like it, though.
Umm, how about Six Feet Under? I watched first four seasons of Mad Men, I certainly wouldn't put it over Wire or Sopranos.sebby on May 22 2013, 08:34:49 PM wrote:I'd comfortably say it's the best dramatic show ever aired on TV. Though I agree you don't always get the same quality with shows that have 60 plus episodes, that's why short lived productions like Deadwood, Carnivale or Rome are most dear to me.
Six Feet Under is a fav of mine too, but it was a roller coaster of inconsistency. Certainly not anywhere near the tight level of writing and acting on MM.
Deadwood season 1 is maybe my favorite season of any tv show. Good call there.

I've been re-watching Arrested Development in preparation for the new season and I've seen it maybe 4 times before and I remember it being good but I'm kind of shocked how really great it is. How each episode is so expertly crafted and plotted. There's only been maybe 2 or 3 episodes in the first two seasons that aren't truly a wonder. Anyway.
Anyone else excited about the fourth season? Has it, by it's very existence, over hyped itself to a point it can't recover? Will we all be disappointed if it isn't the second coming of Christ?

Arrested development is my absolute favorite comedy series, and one of my favorite series of all time (if not #1). I'm really excited about the fourth season but I have a fear that it would be just watchable compared to it's original awesomeness... It would be very difficult to reach the same level after so many years.

The new season is already online. I wasn't that much into the show but I figured I should at least see the first episode and I didn't even smile once and was really bored the whole time. Either the show is much worse than I remember it being or this season sucks. Maybe I'll see some more but I dunno.
I feel like this is a lot like that Duke Nukem game that came out. Its release was delayed for so long and there was so much hype surrounding it that chances are you'll end up being disappointed.

Just finished AD season 4. It definitely takes a little while to get going, but man, the last half of the season beginning with Colony Collapse is fucking fantastic. Not as good as the first 3 seasons, but I'm now super pumped for a potential fifth season or a movie.

Well, that's disappointing. Smith is my favorite Doctor (not that I have too much experience with the Classic Doctors). At least he's on through Christmas. Who's going to replace him? It honestly can't be John Hurt, right? I mean, that would be amazing but it won't happen... right?
I would not have thought so, no. I have seen episodes with quite a few, and Tom Baker and Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant were very good in their own way too and some of the others also sometimes..funkybusiness on Jun 1 2013, 05:06:28 PM wrote:Well, that's disappointing. Looks like John Hurt will play the Doctor but only as a one off, not as the new one :
John will play the real Ninth Doctor. Christopher Eccleston has always been thought of as the Ninth Doctor but now that John has been revealed as the Ninth Doctor, it shuffles Eccleston’s Doctor to be the Tenth Time Lord, Tennant the 11th and Smith the 12th.

Odds on the new Doctor
Rory Kinnear 3 to 1
David Harewood (Homeland, Treasure Island,) and Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey,) who are 4/1 and 5/1 respectively.
Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch and Merlin’s Colin Morgan are both 6/1 shots meanwhile, following the latter’s Doctor Who cameo appearance back in 2008.

Okay, wait a minute. If I remember right (which could be wrong) can't the Doctor only have 12 regenerations? Wouldn't Matt Smith be the "last" Doctor if they're going to insert John Hurt as a new Ninth and bump everyone up? Maybe that means that we'll get an out of order storyline (like with River Song) with the new companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman, with the new Ninth? Wibbly wobbly timey wimey etc?
I could definitely be wrong about the 12 regenerations thing, though.

I'm not too sure about Rory Kinnear. There's no way Dan Stevens would do it. It's "beneath" his Broadway aspirations. I could see Colin Morgan being hired. Not so much Benedict Cumberbatch. but personally I would really like to see David Harewood as the new Doctor. This post seems oddly out of flux after my last post.Cippenham on Jun 1 2013, 05:12:15 PM wrote:Odds on the new Doctor

You are right. The Doctor has 1 life at the start and then 12 regenerations...so 13 altogether.funkybusiness on Jun 1 2013, 05:28:18 PM wrote:Okay, wait a minute. Now that I'll probably have more free time in the following months - unfortunately not just yet, though - I should start watching some of the many multiple highly-regarded series I have been neglecting. The problem is that there are just too many of them! Series that I need to catch up with listed below.
Never watched these or only seen a couple of episodes
Mad Men
The Wire
Justified
Breaking Bad
Sons of Anarchy
Sopranos
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The X-Files
The Office (both UK and US versions)
Parks and Recreation
Have seen more than a couple of episodes but not that much:
Peep Show (seen the first five episodes or so)
Star Trek: TNG (seen actually the first season in its entirety and a couple of episodes from the second one, but supposedly the series starts to get real good just after that point)
Six Feet Under - Think I've seen about half or more of this. Don't think I've seen seasons 3 or 4, not at least in their entirety, and not sure whether I've seen all episodes of seasons 2 and 5... And anyway it's been a while since I watched it.
The Game of Thrones - Quite liked the first season but for reason never continued to follow the series.
Homeland - I did watch about 6 hours of this in the span of one weekend earlier this year, but then it started to get less interesting and think I just didn't feel like continuing watching it after episode 8 or 9. It's supposed to get better again after that, though, so maybe I should start watching it again.
And the list goes on... There are some series that may be popular/culturally significant but that I'm not particularly interested in watching, such as Dr. Who or Star Trek: TOS.

Good time to catch up on Breaking Bad, final half-season starts in August.
The Wire and Sopranos should obviously be high on your priority list. They are official checks even.

Anyway, have you other non-native English speakers found the dialogue in The Wire - or any other of the series mentioned - to be easy to understand, or should I try to find subtitles for it? When I watched Deadwood some years ago without subtitles it was sometimes really hard to understand all what they were saying, and although that series may be an extreme case think something like The Wire could be a challenge for my meager listening comprehension skills. I sometimes struggle on that front, especially when the dialogue is complex and/or the characters use lots of slang words.
