What a magnificent movie. The combination of a rich imagination and superb special effects almost entirely makes me forget about the few minor flaws. I love Hans Zimmer's score too.

I read a review of this when it first came out and watched it on a small black & white TV - Absolutely didn't get it.

As happens not infrequently, of late, I wonder how much is a result of me mellowing and how much is due to my having watched so many more movies in the years since alternatives to theater viewing proliferated. And, of course, 10 years on this forum. Anyway... So glad I saw it again.

65. The ruling class (UK 72) - This one really grows on me. First saw it in a theater - it spoke to my preoccupation with our cultural death-worship. The friend I went with was horrified.

66. Young and innocent (UK 37) - only Josephine Tey film I've ever seen but I see that there are others, some serialized.

67. Cat Ballou (65) - this wears better than I expected. Thoroughly enjoyed, especially Lee Marvin.

Rutger Hauer's acting and Vangelis's score are what I liked best about the movie. I could have done with a bit less darkness, steam and rain though.

113. True Grit (2010)

Hailee Steinfeld shines as Mattie, a clever, determined 14-year-old with a rich vocabulary who manages to impose her will on adults. But I like how she shows her age at times as well. Jeff Bridges is great too, although it wouldn't hurt if he'd speak a little clearer. Cinematography and soundtrack are both outstanding.

Well, I get tired of saying how much I didn't remember from previous watches.

The razor's edge, though: I'm sure I saw it in the 60s maybe, but I don't remember how or where. I had read the book not long before. I remembered it as pretty lightweight and when it surfaced on Criterion I decided to see what I had missed. Answer: the point.

BTW, I finally figured out how to listen to podcasts and tuned in to the TALKING POINTS episode on rewatching. I was somewhat hampered by lack of subtitles or ability to lipread, but it was fun to hear your voices. (Mighty, Sol, and ---?)

Yeah... it ain't very good but it has a few funny scenes, romance and, most importantly, Reese. Besides, I love hearing that Southern accent.

118. Shadow Man (2006)

This is actually one of the few Steven Seagal movies from this century that I didn't hate when I saw it first. Back in the day, when life was simple and over 10% of all movies I'd seen were starring either Steven or Doris Day, I must have regarded Shadow Man as an okay action flick with flaws. This time around, I could clearly see the crappy quality. Despite the cliches, bad editing and poor acting from Steven, it ended up being watchable thanks to the action scenes.

The "discussion" about the phrase 'funny you should say' was basically the only thing I remembered about the movie. It was one of the scenes which took place in a club. Several of those scenes perfectly captured that feeling when you've been at a club or bar or whatever for a few hours and alcohol is involved.

3. Lawrence of Arabia (1962) - 10/10
Finally watched it with the wife! It was the first film to get me seriously interested in cinema, so I was kind of worried it would disappoint... But I was honestly every bit as awesome as I remembered. I was surprised by the more nuanced and tragic tone of the second half, specially compared to the epic and celebratory first half. But that's precisely the path of the character, I guess. At any rate, my wife really liked it, so it was a great experience for both.
