What got you to Platinum?

What film finally got you that Platinum on any list? Was it hard to find, left to last for a reason, and it was it better than worse than expcected? The Long Day Closes would be a good choice to finish a list.

I got to Platinum with Stuart Little for icheckmovies-Most checked. it was terrible but it did star Hugh Laurie!

Top 250 - the first time I completed it is the one I count, so Anatomy of a Murder (put off due to length mainly)

Action & Adventure - The Hidden Fortress (I hate Kurosawa)
Romance - Brighter, Summer Day (the length and the fact that it didn't interest me put me off)
Comedy - Filantropica (Romanian)
Drama - Morometii (Romanian)
Mystery - Incendies (sounded boring)
Thriller - Elite Squad 2 (didn't want to have to watch the original film too, and also it sounded lame)

Leonard Maltin - Dodsworth (the name and plot sounded stupid, didn't like it that much but it was better than I expected)
Academy Award Best Pic - How Green Was My Valley (I was going to start on TSPDT after that list and it was the last one left also on TSPDT, so I was going to use it as a segue)
MovieSense 101 - Cherry Blossoms (sounded like something I'd hate, but I actually really liked it)
AFI 100 Movies - Nashville (sounded dull, was even worse than I expected)

Never really working for any Platinums except IMDb Top 250.

Academy Award Best Picture: Chicago. Was not really interested in this musical. And the fact that it beat Pianist and Two towers also did not help. Finally watched this for 2000s challenge. Turned out to be better than I expected.

AFI 100 Movies: Yankee Doodle Dandy. Was watching all AFI movies for the AFI knock out tournament. But before I could watch this one it was eliminated. Then completely forgot about it. Recently watched it and became my instant favorite.

Thriller and Mystery . Really did not know which ones got me Platinums. Suddenly one day the award update said I got plats for these lists. Not really concentrating on IMDb genre lists.


Lost Platinum: IMDb Top 250
1st : Got my first plat with My Neighbor Totoro. Then A Separation came and took my plat away.
2nd : A Separtion. But then Throne of Blood & La Haine came
3rd : La Haine. But Papillon came.
4th : Papillon. But Moonrise Kingdom came.

So standing on 249 now.

I got platinum the other day for A.V. Club - The best films of the '00s with Ni na bian ji dian which I thought sounded interesting, but I didn't like it at all.

I already mentioned it, but the less than stellar Avengers got me platinum on IMDB top 250. We'll see how long this lasts....until the next blockbuster comes out and all the fanboys & girls rate it higher than such classics as Casablanca and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

What fortuitous timing for this thread to pop up. I'm ~10% of the way through Best of Youth (La meglio gioventù), which will get me platinum on the FilmTotaal list. The six-hour run time has put me off for a while, but I'm home alone today, so it seemed like a good idea.

IMDB 1940s: I Remember Mama (1948). Very enjoyable family drama about a Norwegian immigrant family, 8.5/10

IMDB Musical: White Christmas (1954). Decent feel-good musical with some good songs and dancing, 7/10

Really just a coincidence, in a very good list this was an okay addition that I probably would never have sought out if not to get the Platinum.
Academy Award Best Picture- Wings
Pure accident that the first was last, when I was piling through the BP winners (hello TCM) this was a safety one in my mind. I remembered it being uploaded to the Paramount Vault youtube channel only to later find they gutted the channel and made it a clip show catalogue.
Most Checked- Trainspotting
The last three for me were all squeamish stuff (Saw and Requiem for a Dream being the other two). Was pleasantly surprised by all three.
AFI Movies- American Graffiti
It was an almost too perfect ending for this list, even if the movie was somewhat at arms length for me emotionally.
Leonard Maltin- Greed
By sheer happenstance I was barely a notch away from platinum, in fact all other remaining movies on this list were combined shorter than EVS' Greed. I didn't want to watch the butchered short version, couldn't find the 2:20 version, so I just swung for the reconstruction cut. I thought it was still incredibly good even if it was a bit like a Sega CD crossed with a 3DO at times.

Braveheart - looks long and boring and Mel Gibson's other big film (Hacksaw Ridge) was really not my cup of tea

The Adventures of Robin Hood - never been a fan of swashbucklers and not a huge fan of 1930s cinema

There are probably more in the top 400, but not a lot. When I joined iCM in 2012, I imported my IMDb-ratings and I instantly had a bunch of platinums. I entered the overall rankings somewhere near 300. Some of the smaller lists are very easy to have platinum on if you've already seen a lot of the canon before joining iCM. I have to add, that back then I had already seen most of 1001MYMSBYD and a lot of TSPDT.

I'm not surprised at you (or many others I'm sure) not having any platinum, but you are possibly the first person I've ever run across who has never seen The Wizard of Oz, or at least the first to mention that fact.

I've only got one Platinum (IMDB Animation) which I believe I got after watching Your Name during an animation challenge. Other stuff (like Coco) have jumped into the list since then, but I have young kids so I've been able to keep up.

I suppose - though I'd reserve the term "whore" for the folks who stay on top of the IMDb and Box Office lists by regularly subjecting themselves to any Hollywood crap that happens to make a lot of money and/or get high ratings from juvenile males - whereas I only watch the cream of that crap

But I've been thinking about this a bit, and I think that I do like to finish some lists in part because I've had a great deal of trouble in finishing any tasks of effort or duration in my life; I have precious few accomplishments - in any meaning of that word you care to think of - in 52 years. So finishing off a fairly big and challenging list that includes a few things I'm not particularly interesting in is *something*.

And there are some lists that are actually quite good, through and through, with very little garbage. I've grown to really like the BFI lists for example and am now just a few away from finishing the western one. Perhaps I'll work on the musical one later in the year or next year as I'm only at about 2/3 on that one. But those lists in general are more oriented to interesting and genre-expanding choices than most such tallies, they're less likely to have every SF blockbuster of the last 30 years or every John Wayne film, and more likely to have stuff like Born in Flames or Lonesome Cowboy. On the world cinema front the UNESCO list appeals to me for similar reasons though even getting bronze on that would be a challenge and I haven't actually made any deliberate effort in that direction.

Ditto here too (about to be 36), and I like completing lists for the sense of completion and because they make me grow as a person along the way. Even if I don't like some of the films, I feel like I learn something from each of them.

I have 4 platinum awards. I used to have 6 before.
I lost the BAFTA Best Film award and I have to watch "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" to have it back.
For FESPACO, I was proud because I was the first person on ICM to have platinum by checking "Aujourd'hui". I really enjoyed watching the movies from that list. That was several years ago, now I've lost my platinum and I have to watch the two last movies. I will.
Both of these lists are a short-term goal. Just 3 movies !

Otherwise, my platinum are :

And this is precisely why IMDb ratings and lists are totally useless. I was an IMDb forum regular from 2005 on, and I spent my share of time looking at ratings and lists, and it's especially obvious that vote-stuffing/campaigning/trolling - whatever you want to call it - bends ratings and lists severely out of shape when you look at the early years. About 10 years ago I noticed this phenomenon in many of the more popular films of the 1910s - at one point all the Feuillade serials and Gance's Napolean had 30-50% "1" votes for example. There was an ongoing thread about this on the Silent forum at the time, and I and several others contacted IMDb about it, to no avail. Of course over time ratings typically even out somewhat but with those early films that still only have a few hundred votes in some cases, it might take decades.

And of course it's still going on, perhaps just as bad or worse than ever now that the forums aren't around. Take a look at the early votes for this film which has only screened once so far, this past week in Venice:
