Year by Year Polls: 1926 (Closed)

Post by gromit82 »

Welcome to the Year-by-Year Poll!

This poll is for the year 1926.

These polls are fairly simple. We work our way through film history selecting a different year each time, and you list your top films from the given year. Depending on the number of voters, the poll usually produces a list of around 50-90 films and is a great way of finding recommendations. Some people may also list other films outside their top 20 as honorable mentions or runners-up.

The Rules

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies, and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1926.

- Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but for ranked ballots, your list must be numbered, starting with 1 and ending with the number for the last ranked film. Partially ranked lists (where a certain number at the top are ranked, and the rest are unranked) are allowed. Please make sure that what you mean to do with your list is clear.

- IMPORTANT: Along with a list of the titles, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films. Your ballot cannot be counted if the IMDb urls are not included. (And if you list only the URLs but not the films' titles, you'll significantly reduce your fellow voters' enjoyment of this poll, so please make sure to include both titles and URLs.)

- For the Year by Year polls, we don't use IMDb lists or ICM lists; please post your list of movie titles and URLs right here in this thread.

- Please note, you must post your list of URLs yourself rather than having someone else do that for you.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, etc.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

This post is reserved for eligibility rulings.

The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (Alfred Hitchcock) is listed by IMDb as a 1927 film and placed 6th in our poll for 1927. It's not eligible for this 1926 poll.

This is only out of 21 features seen... maybe I should limit it to the top 5 only, which are all 4-star movies... but the 3.5 selection here is quite strong too, just not completely my taste in general but very well made and imaginative features that have rightfully stood the test of time.

1. 4 - A Page of Madness
2. 4 - Faust
3. 4 - For Heaven's Sake
4. 4 - Flesh and the Devil
5. 4 - Moana
6. 3,5 - The Adventures of Prince Achmed
7. 3,5 - The General
8. 3,5 - Ella Cinders
9. 3,5 - 3 Bad Men
10. 3,5 - Le Voyage imaginaire

Born in 1970! Unfortunately, I can't remember the first film I saw. The following three films that I saw when I was young left strong memories: Krakatit (1948, Vavra), Dance of the Vampires (1967, Polanski), Paper Moon (1973, Bogdanovich).

1926

I've seen not enough films from 1926 to make a full ballot.
Actually, it's together with 1922 the year from the 1920s I saw least films from.
But from the ones I've seen there are some pretty strong contenders.

01. Kurutta Ippēji | A Page of Madness (Kinogasa)
02. Faust: Eine Deutsche Volkssage (Murnau)
03. Le Voyage Imaginaire | The Imaginary Voyage (Clair)
04. The General (Keaton/Bruckman)

05. Mat' | Mother (Pudovkin)
06. Der Heilige Berg | The Holy Mountain (Fanck)
07. Shinel | The Overcoat (Kozintsev/Trauberg)
08. Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (Reiniger)

09. 3 Bad Men (Ford)
10. Po Zakonu | By the Law (Kuleshov)
11. Flesh and the Devil (Brown)
12. Rien Que les Heures | Nothing But Time (Cavalcanti)

Note: There was actually a press screening of the film "The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog" in September 1926, but the premiere did not take place until January/February 1927. I have this film in my favorites for 1927.

The Lodger placed 6th in our poll for 1927 (held here in 2017), and it's still listed as a 1927 film by IMDb. It's not eligible for 1926.

2. By the Law (Lev Kuleshov)
3. Emak-Bakia (Man Ray)
4. Menilmontant (Dimitri Kirsanoff)
5. Stride, Soviet! (Dziga Vertov)

I have a question about the film ELLA CINDERS. IMDb and Reelgood both list the film at 75 minutes, while the original 1926 review in Variety lists it at 67 minutes.

However, when I got the flim from the public library on DVD (as released by Alpha Home Entertainment), it was only 51 minutes, and the version available on Cineverse is also 51 minutes.

The synopses I've found don't suggest that any of the scenes were missing from the DVD I watched.

I realize that silent films didn't always have fixed running times since they weren't always shown at the same frames per second rate, but I'd like to make sure that I haven't missed a third of the film by watching the Alpha DVD (which even misspells Colleen Moore's name as "Coleen" on the front cover). Does anyone have any information about this film's length?

Some of the film has been lost after the film was cut down to five reels by the Kodascope Library.

This is just a reminder that there are just over 6 days left to vote in this poll. You can always update your ballot at any time before the poll closes (and you don't have to notify me if you do, since I don't start compiling the ballots until after the deadline).
