In a coma for four years since prom night, a young man is kidnapped from hospital by his reckless best friend who is adamant about reuniting him with his now estranged high school girlfriend here. This was directional debut of Zach Cregger of BARBARIAN fame, co-directed with his co-star here. While not a horror film, there are fascinatingly similar doses of dread and mounting uncertainty here with the guy finding out that everyone has moved on during his four years in a coma, and taken on a road trip with no guarantee that his old girlfriend would even still be interested in him. And his girlfriend has become a Playboy Playmate during their time apart, leading to a final third spent at the Playboy Mansion where all sorts of crazy and wild shenanigans take place.

01. Puppet Master X: Axis Rising, by Charles Band (2012) 3.9 on imdb

I found it was one of the best of the puppet master series, actually... Still not a great film...
A few key elements : a ridiculous puppet girlfight, a highly racist puppet called Kamikaze which swears in japanese and blows itself to dust, a nymphomaniac, big-brested, nazi girl who keeps trying to get laid and is constantly interrupted... No more ! No more !

Lead actor Chad McQueen looks more like an office worker than a hardcore martial artist here, and there is a lot to dig in how his looks constantly throw others off. Particularly impressive are the fights in which the bad guys smirk and snicker upon throwing his gun away, unaware that he does not need one to take them down. And the film's very best action sequence is the first one in which McQueen goes undercover as an ordinary pizza delivery driver, only to singlehandedly take down a gang of jewellery thieves, forcing one of them to stab himself with his own weapon. The plot here though? Less impressive.

How do you like your biker flicks? With or without Adam West? If it's the latter, then by all means check this out. He's a mild mannered doctor. That is, until he dons a baseball cap and shades and is thus able to break the arm of the most fearless biker. But alas, they probably only had him on set for a couple of days because he randomly disappears from the plot shortly after scaring off the bikers, and they naturally just start up the tormenting of innocent folks once again, naked lady pet in tow.
Haha, what? :D

Oh God... I made a terrible mistake in watching this without MST3K... It was excruciatingly dull. I even remember that Mike & the bots couldn't make this one that entertaining.
Oh yes, I remember this one! And the many SPECTACULAR scenes of mid-air refueling ..
A Paste article mentioned this as one of their ultimate most unwatchable films, with or without the bots. :turned: (Some very strong contenders in their Top 5 which I'd support ..)

14. Bull Shark (2022, Brett Bentman) 2.6 : 3.0 - A shark attacking people in a lake, this does sounds like a ridiculous fun premise. Alas most of the screen time is taken up by boilerplate drama acted by actors, that the casting agency scrapped the bottom of the barrel for. All this could still be forgiven if the kills were fun and tense, that's the reason to watch these kind of movie after all. Here in the movie also disappoints. Kills exist basically out of one or two shots of a cheap CGI shark approaching and than the nameless victim splashing around before going down under.

15. Nemesis 3: Time Lapse [Nemesis III: Prey Harder] (1996, Albert Pyun) 3.0 : 3.5 - Pray harder this movie is better. Yes that was a lazy joke, but this movie is even lazier.

16. Yogi Bear (2010, Eric Brevig) 4.6 : 4.2

Action Stars of Yesteryear Starring in Recent Duds:
17. Gun Shy [Salty] (2017, Simon West) 4.1 : 3.0 - Antonio Banderas plays an aging rock star whose supermodel wife (Olga Kurylenko) is kidnapped in a movie that's painfully unfunny. This is embarrassing for everyone involved. I have no idea why Banderas feels the need to still appear in movies like this at this point of his career.

18. First Kill (2017, Steven C. Miller) 5.0 : 4.0 - Bruce Willis sleep walks again through a movie, while his character could have been a interesting play on his image. The plot isn’t half bad and the characterization of the criminal surprisingly decent even. It’s deserving of a better movie, cause the execution is sincerely lacking, making this utterly forgettable. Hayden Christensen does a fine enough job for the limited actor he is.

33. The Big Bang (Tony Krantz, 2010) 6/10 5,4 on IMDb
34. The Prince (Brian A. Miller, 2014) 2/10 4,6 on IMDb

The Big Bang was a surprisingly good neo-noir with beautiful visuals and some unexpected mentions or references to Schrodinger, Planck and Heisenberg with plenty of nuclear physics on top. A fun role for Antonio Banderas. Cast and cameos include Snoop Dogg, Bill Duke, Sam Elliott, Delroy Lindo, William Fichtner among others.

4. Maniac (1934), #IMDB of 3.7

I had trouble even deciphering the audio, but what little I understood included some priceless gems of terrible writing. Years from now I will probably only remember the cat rancher.

Fleeing the mental health facility where he was sent after killing two young girls in a horror-themed amusement park ride, a serial killer returns to the now derelict ride in this slasher. The circumstances behind the killer's escape are bizarre, but there is a great part where he sticks a torchlight right through a rapey orderly's chest, creating a giant hole that another orderly eerily looks through from behind. How exactly the killer overpowered everyone else at the clinic is never shown though, and there is a giant coincidence in which a group of young adults have decided to break in and have a party in the so-called dark ride on the exact night that the killer returns. The ride is a perfectly spooky horror movie location, lit up in neon colours and full of ghoulish imagery.

52. Hell Riders (James Bryan, 1984) 3.4/10
Saved it with a 3.7, it's the current rating it has on IMDb and doesn't seem to have changed lately.

17. 65 (Beck & Woods, 2023) #5.4 on IMDb
A boring slog, based on a somewhat interesting premise of time travel 65 million years back in time to when the asteroid hit and killed off all the dinosaurs.

18. Exorcist II: The Heretic (Boorman & Pallenberg, 1977) #3.8 on IMDb

Is this the biggest fall from the original to the sequel ever? I see that Scorsese talks it up, but that is absolutely baffling to me. Absolute crap.

Now that's a special one. The IMDb score is devastating, way below your usual Abel movie (which are no site darlings). Critics reviews are on the better half of mixed, though: green Metascore, tightly, and 54% on RT. On both sites, audiences HATED it. And then there's LB, the other, biggest user-fed filmbase, and they .. LIKE the film at 3.0 at average!
This work must be more divisive than Trash Humpers.

I almost started watching Exorcist II this week, still having the original Friedkin very freshly in mind.

1. Double Dragon (1994, 3.9) - 5/10
2. Hard Kill (2020, 3.0) - 4/10
3. Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003, 4.3) - 5/10
4. Swim (2021, 2.8) - 3/10
5. Street Fighter (1994, 4.0) - 5/10
6. Chain of Command (1994, 4.2) - 6/10
7. RobCop 3 (1993, 4.1) - 6/10
8. Trauma Center (2019, 4.0) - 2/10
9. Sheena (1984, 4.9) - 5/10
10. Kill 'em All (2012, 4.6) - 6/10
11. Supercell (2023, 4.4) - 2/10
12. Ring of Death (2008, 4.8) - 5/10
Blah blah blah Fight Club in a prison. They didn't waste much money on the writing department, but at least had the good sense to make most of the film about these near-death matches between prisoners. Fighting was OK. A passable watch.

13. Death Hunt (2022, 3.7) - 3/10
Most Dangerous Game. Except the hunters espouse right wing ideology, but in a way that they think it's obviously right. So I don't know if I'm supposed to be sad or glad the villains get their comeuppance.

14. 211 (2018, 4.4) - 4/10
I genuinely don't know how you can have a movie about a shootout during a bank robbery with a massive standoff, Nick Cage starring, and manage to pull off this snooze fest.

My girlfriend walked in on me watching these and there was just no good explanation that I could come up with.

6. Street Fighter (1994) , #IMDB of 4.0

Delicious ham and entertaining cheese, but very little fighting and even fewer streets. Performances all over the place and disappointing action, but it didn't annoy me.

13. Battlefield Earth (Roger Christian, 2000, 🇺🇸) - 5/10 2.5
14. Killing Season (Mark Steven Johnson, 2013, 🇺🇸) - 7/10 5.4

John Travolta double feature. Battlefield Earth deserves all its criticism, but it's campy fun and I enjoyed it. Killing Season was quite good, an interesting character study about two men utterly broken by the Bosnian war.
Spoiler
1. A Good Day to Die Hard (John Moore, 2013, 🇺🇸) - 5/10 5.2

3. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (Joe Berlinger, 2000, 🇺🇸) - 6/10 4.0
4. Shadow of the Blair Witch (Ben Rock, 2000, 🇺🇸) - 6/10 5.3
5. Wavelength (Michael Snow, 1967, 🇨🇦/🇺🇸) - 8/10 5.4

OK, so I will enter the theater of combat sooner than the last four days of the month, even if I risk coming in last place - I love the idea of this challenge too much. I will attempt to add reviews when they're available (says the person who's still backlogged to June!)

01. Invasion of the Animal People (1959) [IMDB - 3.7]

02. Abominable (2019) [IMDB - 2.7, which is weird cause the ICM page says "6.6" - guess it must not be updated]

03. Final Justice (1984) [IMDB - 2.2]

04. Pagan Warrior (2019) [IMDB - 3.0]

05. Manos Returns (2018) [IMDB - 3.1]

We went to the Dollar Tree for the first time, and found a "DVD section" - and I was overjoyed by how absurd and unknown most all the films were, so we bought four at $1.25 each, and I must say that's been one of the best investments of $5 - with #2 + #4 above being two of those purchases, with the film "Coven" to come, and also a Pope Francis documentary, which isn't on IMDB (so I won't include it in this challenge). I find it hilarious that the films were less than 5.4 on IMDB, without trying, but they've all been amusingly awful.

Also, Nov 15th was Manos the Hands of Fate Day (originally released on Nov 15) - so we at least had to watch the sequel!

Torgo wrote: November 6th, 2023, 5:01 am 10. Double Down (2005) (Neil Breen/10) :imdb: 4.1
Dedicated to OldAle - If this was my first exposure to the Neil Breen Cinematic Universe, I wouldn't talk about anything else for weeks. His very debut is probably the closest to the experience people had with The Room somewhere during the 00s. Outsider art amateur auteurism gone completely awry. The narration of the first 5 minutes is filled with so many incredible absurdities, it has to be seen and heard to be believed. What appeals to me a lot about Neil's approach is how he still shoots on film - not consumer cameras - and uses a ton of moody Creative-Commons-like soundtrack, which together with the empty landscapes, sets and not exactly modern cars makes for an older, if not timeless aesthetic. Am I getting crazy? Maybe. The amount of stock footage in this is unheard of. The pool scene! Love! Sex! Tuna from cans! Government conspiracies! BIOTERROR! Children with brain cancer! A single Neil Breen movie really has it all. The most fascinating sub 5.4 find.

11. Starcrash (1978) (3,5/10) :imdb: 4.0
The campiness of Roger Corman's [distribution's] Star Wars knock-off must be over 9000. But people seem to love it, and I can't blame them: the sets are so clumsy, but you can see they TRIED. There are countless scenes in "space" with colorful stars, different planets to be roamed on. Laser swords, robots, giant robots, amazons, a chick in a bikini leather dress for half of the time. And while the special effects are cheap, there are hundreds of them. Starcrash hasn't time to brake! If you love the camp of Flash Gordon, maybe you can appreciate it in Starcrash, too. And if it makes you laugh, that's still cool, right?

These are both 9/10s (maybe even 10's) for me.

Double Down is such a great look into schizophrenia -
here's my write-up on it, idk if you can actually spoil anything in this movie though
I kept waiting for the movie to actually start, as the entire thing felt like it was the introduction before something, anything was to happen. Its essentially just Neil Breen telling us in voiceover that he’s an omnipotent god who, using three laptops that he hides in the desert + two satellite dishes attached to his car hacks into every possible computer system across the world. But he also says that if he doesn’t login every three days, poison will leech into the world’s metros + he murders random people… so he’s an evil villain then? Oh and he lives in his car and only eats cans of tuna, which he spills all over himself. He seems like a very classic case of schizophrenia to me. First, he has deity delusions: thinking he can cure some girl's brain cancer ("Oh no!") with his magic touch; the power to bring people back to life; an invisible death ray; and has every medal of honor the government can give him. As someone who's also thought they were a deity, I recognize the similar traits - thinking you can heal someone through will power, and that you're tantamount to the world's security (I've thought the CIA was going to assassinate me). Or he spends most of the movie paranoid about being tracked - usually hidden in gum. He also keeps hallucinating his dead girlfriend, and other random people, as he clambers around rocks in the desert to speak to these people - like his past self. Most of the people he talks to exist in this blue sky purgatory where FBI director and dead girlfriend alike show up. Then he has a habit of "waking up" on the ground, with a message of "help me" in blood. So he clearly experiences psychosis, and perhaps has moments of clarity where he realizes he needs to get professional help (true for me as well). He's also incredibly disorganized and lives this chaotic existence that's so essential to the schizo experience - and this is emblematic in the film itself - as everything that happens here just follows these random unexplainable sequences. You spend most of the movie having no idea what's going on, who anyone is, if any semblance of a plot has occurred, and unsure how to process what you've just seen - just like during psychosis. Its fantastically disorganized, and perhaps that's to its benefit - as there's clearly some logic to the chaos - just waiting to be deciphered - as there's quite a lot of depth here. But of course people find this to be hilarious, as the "insane" have been the butt of humanity's hate, scorn, and humor for centuries. So go on you fucks, laugh at us - as we suffer unimaginable horrors, that you will never even hope to understand.
And Starcrash is so amazingly fun, although the Corman edit that's most accessible cuts out some of the best / funniest moments, which one can see some of them here:

I honestly think I love Starcrash more than Star Wars - as it's just so joyous - there's such a goofy, nonsensical but delightful element to it all - this extracted attempt at world and lore building, that kind of all just gets thrown out for something new every 5 mins, each bringing some chaotic addition that just ends up making it even more absurd - and I can't get enough of it.

My partner also cosplayed as Stella Star ... at a Star Wars con (only 1 person recognized her character - most thought it was related to the Holiday Special).

Invasion U.S.A. rivals The Delta Force as the dumbest and most nonsensical Chuck Norris film.
I'm afraid this comment will only find diminishing returns as you explore the even far worse side of Chuck Norris, from Silent Rage (Norris vs super karate zombie), or my personal favorite (aside from Lone Wolf McQuade): Forest Warrior

02. Puppet Master: Axis Termination, by Charles Band (2017) 3.8 on imdb

This time, there's an actual story, visual effects, but it's still so weak it didn't get a better ranking...

A few key elements : A psychic midget, a witch with both ancient powers and a strangely forced accent, digital blood, the crazy nurse with syringes for fingertips.

03. Aquaslash, by Renaud Gauthier (2019) 4/10 3.7 on imdb

A slasher in an aquatic park, a graduation party and many horny kids... Well, that was bad, but also a bit fun.

A few key elements : a romantic opening (from behind), a slashing ride, some of the most ridiculous background actors ever...

04. Hell's ground / Zibahkhana, by Omar Khan 7/10 5.3 on imdb

A pakistanese texas chainsaw massacre, with zombies on the side... Cheap, but quite entertaining, really...

A few key elements : a killer in burqa with a flying spiked mace, a zombie midget, ladoos, and the coolest van ever
My kind of bad boys...

As one might expect from the title, this an anti-Communism propaganda drama with lots of heavy-handed dialogue regarding the supposed evils of Communism. What one might not expect is that the film also has echoes of a decent paranoia thriller. The opening scene is particularly strong with a seemingly ordinary man and woman on the run from mysterious unnamed persons. We also get some great parts later on involving Shepard Menken as an excommunicated party member. Whether it be looking out of his window at night to notice that he is being watched from cars below, or wandering the streets at night deep in thought, tension absolutely simmers. This is not really Menken's film though, and Robert Rockwell is a bit bland as the main guy.

A few key elements : A psychic midget, a witch with both ancient powers and a strangely forced accent, digital blood, (AND) the crazy nurse with syringes for fingertips.
Oh, now I must prepare a Puppet Master marathon sometime next year (I've only seen the first one). Thanks for the delicious key elements descriptions, cinephage!

Well, you'll certainly watch a few very bad films, I must say, but some of them are entertaining, and in any case the puppets will become new friends of yours, even when they only appear in stock shots...

A drunk debt-ridden man creates a hit list together with a stranger he met at a bar, only to discover that the stranger was a professional hit-man as the names on his list start turning up murdered in this thriller. While Cole Hauser is merely serviceable in the lead role, Cuba Gooding Jr. absolutely knocks it out of the park as the philosophical hit-man who keeps rationalising what he is doing with a very calm manner of talking. Hauser's initial dilemma is thought-provoking too; he instantly becomes the police's prime suspect while unable to tell them about the hit-man without also implicating himself.

The sequel to The Maltese Falcon you never heard of, this features return performances from Lee Patrick and Elisha Cook Jr., but is pretty much an unofficial follow-up, following around Sam Spade's son. Played out as a comedy, this also feels much more like a spoof and the gags are unfortunately of the hit-and-miss variety. The chief antagonist is also a Nazi with dwarfism in what seems to be a mere excuse for a bunch of poor taste height related gags. George Segal is expectedly solid though and Lionel Stander is hilarious, completely oblivious to how much Segal dislikes him and misinterpreting everything.

15. Cats (Tom Hooper, 2019, 🇬🇧/🇺🇸) - 2/10 2.8
I got used to the freaky looking cats, but, man, this movie is dull. There is no real story or characters to talk about, the songs are generic, so I guess the saving grace of the stage musical is the choreography, but that doesn't come across because of the way this movie is directed and edited.
16. The Bag Man (David Grovic, 2014, 🇺🇸) - 4/10 5.2
Felt random.
