*I double-checked this, and I think there isn't a single scene in this movie without some form of fog or smoke.
I plan to watch Black Rain (1989) for the December War challenge. When I looked for it in my library's computer system, I found your Black Rain (1989) and knew that I had seen it so I got confused for a second. Searching for the director instead led me to the right film.
Prepare yourself to be severely devastated by it, an extraordinary, haunting, beautiful film... which makes me wonder something - I think exactly one year ago we were in a state of a collective blind madness when we thought that pairing Documentaries, War and Iran/Central Asia together was a bright idea, and in December of all months. It promises to be the most depressing film-viewing month ever! Sweet Santa put some war comedies/musicals under my tree!

Just for fun I'm going for a second lap on the bonus challenge. Feel free to ignore my tags if that isn't allowed or creates too much extra work.

35. Marked Woman (1937), 7.5, #Nov26 - Featuring a female protagonist

A bunch of "women of low character" turn state's evidence against a ruthless kingpin. Bette Davis and her sisterhood are quite good. Bogart as a prim little lawyer is significantly less interesting in contrast.

36. Christmas Holiday (1944), 6.0, #Nov16 - Set in a bar/Featuring a singer

Singers Gene Kelly and Deanna Durbin rub some dirt in their pristine images starring in a Siodmak noir. They make an attractive doomed couple, but neither is fully convincing, and screenplay has been scrubbed too clean. Partly on me for being unable to shake my preconceptions.

37. Killing Jesus (2017), 7.5, #Nov30 - Directed by a woman

A photography student in Colombia witnesses her father's assassination by a young contract killer. The police are useless, so a few months later when she runs into the killer at a nightclub she decides to get close in order to seek revenge. However their initial emotionally-damaged non-chemistry becomes a quasi-romantic tangle as their time together subconsciously fills a mutual emptiness.

38. Body Double (1984), 8.0, #Nov14 - Hitchcockian Noir

The lukewarm reception so far this challenge set the bar low, but I quite enjoyed this. The first half is over-steeped in Palma's Hitchcock influences, but I enjoyed how the 2nd half complicates, inverts, satirizes, and critiques what came before. The 'Relax' porno music video was an unexpected treat.

Korean Noir

39. Nowhere to Hide (1999), 9.0, #Nov3 - Featuring a cynical detective

A barrage of stylish experiments hung on a relatively simple genre exercise. For most this will be too much technique in the service of a average cop-obsessed-with-killer story, but I was consistently surprised and impressed at way the visual ideas complimented, contrasted, and generally accentuated the action.

40. Black Hair (1964), 4.5, #Nov2 - Love gone wrong/betrayal

A gangland love triangle between a strict crime boss, his spurned wife, and her good-guy cabbie lover. The woman's face is savagely scarred as punishment for being raped by a blackmailer, which makes it harder for her to make a living as a prostitute. Awful gender politics and increasingly maudlin writing undermine a strong start and crisp BW cinematography.

A drunk debt-ridden man creates a hit list together with a stranger he met at a bar, only to discover that the stranger was a professional hit-man as the names on his list start turning up murdered in this thriller. While Cole Hauser is merely serviceable in the lead role, Cuba Gooding Jr. absolutely knocks it out of the park as the philosophical hit-man who keeps rationalising what he is doing with a very calm manner of talking. Hauser's initial dilemma is thought-provoking too; he instantly becomes the police's prime suspect while unable to tell them about the hit-man without also implicating himself.

The sequel to The Maltese Falcon you never heard of, this features return performances from Lee Patrick and Elisha Cook Jr., but is pretty much an unofficial follow-up, following around Sam Spade's son. Played out as a comedy, this also feels much more like a spoof and the gags are unfortunately of the hit-and-miss variety. The chief antagonist is also a Nazi with dwarfism in what seems to be a mere excuse for a bunch of poor taste height related gags. George Segal is expectedly solid though and Lionel Stander is hilarious, completely oblivious to how much Segal dislikes him and misinterpreting everything.

131. Un maledetto imbroglio AKA The Facts of Murder(1959) A simple crime opens opens up a can of worms, with a hard boiled detective uncovering all sorts of secrets from those involved in order to solve the mystery. Great stuff.
132. Contraband (1940) Early collaboration of Powell and Pressburger, lots of fun with great characters.
133. The Whistler (1944) Another one of those ''I'm hiring you to kill me'' flicks. Not very memorable.
134. Mang jing AKA Blind Shaft (2003) ''What's a few deaths? One shits after eating, one might die down the shaft [...] China has a shortage of everything but people.'' During the first fifteen minutes of this Chinese noir we see how low a human life can be when the quality of life plummets. And we get introduced to a set of horrific irredeemable psychopaths that are very nonchalant about what they're doing.
135. Escape in the Fog (1945) HAIL JAPAN.
136. Dalkomhan insaeng AKA A Bittersweet Life(2005) Highly stylized Korean action, has its moments, but pretty much stupid. The shady dealers were the best part because it stopped taking itself seriously and leaned on silly.

20. Susie Searches (2022)

Pretty energetic and surprising comedic crime "mystery", with shades of Nancy Drew but a bit darker in places and where the central mystery isn't the main focal point, but rather the aftermath and fallout of the case. If this one is on anybody's radar, I'd urge you not to watch the trailer, or if you want a taste, just the first thirty seconds or so, because it gives away just about every major surprise and reveals the central hook and twist of the film. That aside, this was quite enjoyable, and full of solid performances and a nicely balanced tone between the lighthearted and more sinister moments.

By watching this boxing noir, I gained a Bronze Award on TSPDT's 100 Essential Noir Films, Bronze on iCheckMovies's 1940s Top 100 and Silver on IMDb's Film-Noir Top 50! I loved the shots of the various spectators.

Always very satisfying to hit multiple awards at once! Especially with a movie you enjoy. Congrats!

51 - Intruder in the Dust (1949) - 8/10 - In 1940s Mississippi, a black man is found holding a gun and standing over the body of a white man who was just shot. It's up to a lawyer, two teenage boys, and an old woman to prove his innocence and keep him away from the lynch mob.

52 - Jeopardy (1953) - 7.5/10 - A family is on vacation in Mexico when an accident leaves the husband trapped under a timber on a deserted beach with the tide coming in. The wife (Barbara Stanwyck) goes for help, but runs into problems along the way.

53- Journey Into Fear (1943) - 5/10 - An American working in Turkey is informed that Nazi agents are after him. He is quickly ushered onto a ship that is supposed to take him out of danger, but may actually put him in more danger thanks to the other passengers on the trip. The film is a bit of a mess, though that is likely intentional in some ways to get you to feel the confusion felt by the protagonist. I didn't really enjoy the film that much.

54 - Key Witness (1947) - 7/10 - The plot of this film is kind of ridiculous, but is still entertaining. Much of the story is told in flashback after a hobo is in an accident and ends up in the hospital. Milton Higby is an amateur inventor who is stuck in an office job where he is picked on by the boss and hasn't had a raise in years. He is something of a milquetoast at home as well. His whole demeanor changes when he hits it big at the races one day and this sets off a chain of event that sees him hit the road.

55 - Marilyn / Roadhouse Girl (1953) - 5.5/10 - A garage owner is pretty controlling with his younger wife and with his business. His wife wants nice things, but finds it hard to get out from his domineering presence. When the newly hired mechanic steps in to protect her from her husband, everything changes.

56 - My Name is Julia Ross (1945) - 7/10 - A woman applies for a job as a secretary for an elderly woman and wakes up to find that she has been drugged and transported far from London. She is kept prisoner in a mansion and they try to convince her that she is the wife of the elderly woman's son and has had a nervous breakdown. She works to escape or get word out for help.

57 - Night Editor (1946) - 7.5/10 - A group of men are playing poker and one of the men relates a story about a police detective who witnesses a murder, but doesn't come forward about it since he was cheating on his wife with another woman at the time. This leads to further complications along the way. It's a pretty good film.

58 - No Man's Woman (1955) - 7.5/10 - A woman refuses to give her husband a divorce unless she pays him a huge settlement which would necessitate his selling off part of his business. She has at least one man on the side that she is using for her own purposes and intentionally tries to seduce her assistant's fiancé. She seems to enjoy making trouble for everyone. When she is murdered one night, there is a long list of suspects. Very entertaining.

59 - Open Secret (1948) - 7.5/10 - A landlady checks on a photographer who lives in her building, but he seems to be on edge. He gets a call from an old army buddy who is on his honeymoon and wants to crash at the photographer's apartment and visit as well. Then he gets a second call which isn't as pleasant. When the army buddy shows up at the apartment, his friend is nowhere to be found. Another good noir.

60 - Panique (1946) - 8/10 - Monsieur Hire is a middle aged loner who has lived in the local hotel several years. He isn't particularly sociable or well liked. When a woman is found strangled in a lot on the day the carnival arrives, suspicion eventually falls on Monsieur Hire with mob mentality setting in, fanned along by the real killer. This is a very nice French noir.

137. Lung foo fung wan AKA City on Fire (1987)

Image

Undercover cop drama in colorful neon Hong Kong, mostly enjoyable with a sloppy heist and a funny side romance. Plus featuring the famous Reservoir Dogs shootout which is the strongest point of the film.

Image

However it overdoses on stupid and cliches to the point of almost being unbearable, biggest culprit being the petty competition between the old and new investigators
Summary of stupid with spoilers
-Old Invs: you are tailing my informant!
-New Invs: I don't believe he's an informant.
New invs arrests and tortures the informant.
Boss intervenes and stops him (no repercussions)
New invs suggests using informant in a new raid.
Raid is successful but informant gets killed.
New invs is smug with boss.
Old invs hits him on the head with a brick in front of everyone.
JUSTIFIED.
end credits rolls.

Bernard Blier is fantastic as the generally sullen protagonist here and his courtroom arguing scenes mark the only part of the film where he truly seems alive, excited to have the opportunity to help the innocent man escape charges, something that Blier clearly sees as a way of atoning for his sins. But he did of course still sin, and all of the scenes of him talking to himself and trying to rationalise how he should not be eternally judged for a single thoughtless decision really resonate. Where the film gets especially interesting though is in the aftermath of the court trial in ways best left unspoiled. A masterpiece.

17. Strange Bargain (1949) * 68 min.
A well meaning office worker becomes involved in crime against his will. He remains more or less morally innocent, but his guilt and nervousness lead to stupid mistakes that increase his peril and raise his profile as a suspect for worse crimes than he is actually guilty of. A nice jittery performance by Jeffrey Lynn, and Harry Morgan plays a smart police detective instead of a cowboy or dumb crook for a change, with a limp from the war and a low key method of pushing the suspects into conflict to see what happens, like Robert Young in Crossfire.

138. Moss Rose (1947) Peggy Cummins is very charming as a village girl who wants to be a lady. It plays like a comedy but it's very much a noir.
139. The Criminal (1960) Another great noir from Losey with great performances all around and the usual pretty cinematography you'd expect from his work.
140. L'assassin habite... au 21 (1942) An early Clouzot, sexy, smart, funny, and might be the greatest whodunit I've ever seen, with several red herrings and misdirections to keep you guessing until the reveal. It also reminded me of Balzac work, maybe because of the different wacky characters lumped up together in a lodging house.
141. Mirage (1965) High class stuff! Starts out like a Twilight Zone episode or David Lynch weirdness, gets extremely better with the great Walter Matthau playing a detective, but the (arguably) weak reveal keeps it from shining. Still a very unique experience.
142. Sinsegye AKA New World (2013) Another mediocrity from the bullshit land of undercover cop trope. This time with Romance of the Three Kingdoms level of melodramatic twists, politics, and betrayals. I suspect that the film isn't actually that bad and it's just me being tired of exposing myself to this overused trope in short period.

21. Someone to Watch Over Me (1987)

One of the last Ridley Scott blindspots I have to fill in, and I figure right as his latest historical epic is releasing in theaters, now is as good a time as any. As is common for Sir Ridley's works, it looks great and starts with a pretty spectacular series of overhead shots of New York City over the main titles. The cast is also fairly solid here, with Lorraine Bracco being one of the highlights. It's not one of Scott's top tier efforts, but it's engaging enough and moves along at a solid enough pace that I wasn't ever bored.

22. The Killer (2023)

I know this has been available on Netflix for the last couple of weeks, but I wanted to wait until I had the opportunity to catch it on the big screen, and while I didn't love this like some of David Fincher's other works, I still really enjoyed it. I really admire the stripped down, methodical approach to the storytelling here - no high concepts or murder mystery at the center, just details and repetition - and paired with Fincher's reliably slick editing and a very forward moving pace, this amounts to a pretty compelling if a bit slight entry into the man's filmography.
No R's

I'll probably follow your lead and try to catch it in theaters. I very suspect I will have a similar reaction.

20. Fallen Angel (1945), I forgotten that I have saw this before. I gave a relatively low rating last time. Now I see why. Just a poorly written movie. I lowered my original rating.

21. Detective Story (1951) #Nov3 - Featuring a cynical detective, Mostly took place in a police precinct, like a play. Focus mostly on a Javert like detective. Started out a bit slow, but gotten into some very captivating moments. Some outstanding performance including Lee Grant's Oscar nominated film debut.

22. The Fallen Idol (1948), Seeing through the eyes of a child while his parents were away, he witnessed the conflict between the couple who are his caretakers. Outstanding

23. Born to Kill (1947) #Nov30 - (Co)written and/or (co)directed by a woman, There were some good moment, but some nonsensical part of the story kind of ruined it.

24. The Dark Corner (1946) #Nov23 - Featuring a serious detective, Lucy before I love lucy, playing a secretary tried to help her detective boss who was being framed. Clifton Webb again excellent at playing an cynical villain.

25. The Killer (2023) #Nov24 - An antihero protagonist, Interesting movie about an assassin going about his business while narrating his approach in voice over. Not as much of an action film as one may expect, but mostly a movie about the character. Very well-crafted and stylish looking too.

Bonus Challenge found: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28, 30

1. The Woman in the Window (1944) #Nov19 - Memories (flashback/amnesia/false memory etc.), Edward G Robinson was great in an excellent suspense.
2. To Have and Have Not (1944) #Nov16 - Set in a bar/Featuring a singer, Slow build up in the beginning, but gotten very interesting 2nd half. Humphrey Bogart played a similar guy as in Casablanca. Lauren Bacall's film debut.
3. Out of the Past (1947) #Nov11 - Featuring a Femme Fatale, Excellent movie with a complicated story of betrayal. Just about an hour and half, but a lot went on.
4. Scarlet Street (1945), #Nov1 - Stuck in an unhappy marraige, another Edward G. Robinson and Joan Bennett collaboration like The Woman in the Window. I like this one evne more.
5. Edge of Doom (1950), #Nov5 - On the run, An impulsive and impoverished young man wanted a big funeral for his mom. Problems resulted. Interesting story, but the the young man gets a bit of annoying. Some miscasts, like Dana Andrews playing a pastor.
6. Woman on the Run (1950), #Nov26 - Featuring a female protagonist - Ann Sheridan played the wife of a witness to a murder, who is disappeared. Very much Hitchcock like.
7. Dangerous Passage (1944) #Nov7 - Featuring foggy scenes - A guy traveled on a ship to collect his inheritance, but ran into questionable people. Interesting story, but cheap quality.
8. Suddenly (1954) #Nov28 - Involving an impostor - Assasination attempt on the President in a small town named Suddenly. LIke a play, but very intense. Hard to go wrong with this one when starring Frank Sinatra and Sterling Hayden.
9. He Walked by Night (1948) #Nov8 - 40's noir - Following the cop procedure in capturing a cop killer. Narrated like a documentary, which took away some impact of the story.
10. Kansas City Confidential (1952) #Nov27 - A heist story/involving thieves - A guy got mistaken for a bank robbery and decided to search for the real robbers. I did not care for it that much the first time. I don't remember why. Must be because of lots of question decision among the characters. I enjoyed much more this time around.
11. The Big Caper (1957) #Nov13 - Involving manipulation - Planning a heist, the big boss' girlfriend falls for a guy falls as they pretended to be married couple during the planning. I liked it a lot.
12. Behind Green Lights (1946) - #Nov15 - Story focused on conspiracy/corruption - A whodunit, while a politician tried to frame the daughter of the opposition during an election. Short, but effective.
13. 99 River Street (1953) #Nov9 - 50's noir, Boxer turned cab driver got framed for a murder. Quite good cat and mouse story.
14. The Kennel Murder Case (1933) #Nov21 - An adaptation, William Powell played a detective in figuring out a murder of a wealthy collector. Typical good mystery and good performances.
15. Dark Mountain (1944) #Nov2 - Love gone wrong/betrayal, A forest ranger protecting his former girlfriend who is married to a criminal. Very short. Low quality. Some good moments. Not one of the best.
16. The Wrong Man (1956) #Nov4 - Featuring trench-coats/cigarettes, One of my Hitchcock first watch. A man mistakened for a serial robbery. One thing leads to another to his life's ruin. Excellent suspense like Hitchcock can.
17. I Confess (1953) #Nov14 - Alfred Hitchcock Noir, A priest is accused of a murder he didn't do. Another excellent Hitchcock first watch.
18. I Want to Live! (1958) #Nov18 - Tragic ending, A woman with a shady past hooked up with a gang that committed a murder and got charged along. Powerful.
19. Kiss of Death (1947) #Nov17 - Gangsters, A man caught in his jewel robbery. Willing to do anything to get out. Richard Widmark was awesome as one of the gangster. One of the best.

Michael Keaten is well cast here as a 30s gangster whose world is turned on its head when his naïve and idealistic brother is appointed district attorney. The film is stylistically all over the place and hit-and-miss as a comedy. There are far more hits than misses though, and its hits are very funny, especially Joe Piscopo's "once; once!" repeated line and a parody sexual abstinence propaganda film. It is the climax that works the best though, with much delightfully bonkers comedy as Keaton and his companions keep changing their outfits, plus a gunman in a cinema who points his weapon through the silver screen.

A disillusioned American war veteran arrives in rural Mexico with a plan to blackmail the crime boss responsible for his friend's death in this noir venture directed by and starring Robert Montgomery. The film benefits from an unusual setting for a noir, excellent Russell Metty cinematography and decent supporting performances. It does not really add up how fast and easily Montgomery finds support and friendship in this foreign land where he cannot even find a hotel room, but the movie gets a lot more interesting towards the end as various misfortunes lead to Montgomery stumbling around sick and injured.

Racked with guilt over a client who died in jail after he bungled his case, a passionate lawyer dedicates himself to defending the client's son when the lad is accused of murder in this noirish courtroom drama. Humphrey Bogart as the lawyer has a pretty great character to work, but this is not really a film about Bogart's guilt. His young co-star actually takes up most of the screen time in extended flashbacks, and all of the melodrama in these stretches feels too over-the-top to hit home, as everyone bullies and mistreats the son at every conceivable opportunity. Some nice high camera angles in court though.

Very exciting and vivid noir with the great Ann Sheridan.

This one was on TV yesterday, so I think I'll catch up with it in the coming days. Tom Berenger is a fine actor.
