18. Se, jie / Lust, Caution (2007)

First saw this back in college about a decade ago and despite really liking it then and generally being a big Ang Lee fan, I haven't gotten around to revisiting it until now - and it still maintains a lot of its power and potency, thanks in large part to the engrossing storyline, but also due to the stellar central turns from the always reliable Tony Leung and an early performance from Taing Wei, who made a very strong impression in last year's Decision to Leave.

109. The Lawless (1950) Losey's take on mob's mentality.
110. The Night Holds Terror (1955) Cassavetes in his first credited film with the hitman from Murder by Contract and a third dude are petty thieves who try to score big and it get worse for them with every move they make.
111. The Glass Wall (1953) Interesting one, someone said it's ''neorealism made in hollywoord''
112. Nueve reinas (2000) Pretty fun Argentinian film about swindlers and thieves and their methods and tricks.

Noir Revisited:
113. Les vampires (1915)
Irma Vep is easily one of the best and most iconic characters ever. That alone makes Les vampires 7 hours crime epic worth it, but there's also a great plot that can be hard to predict, surprising stunts and action scenes, great framing and camerawork, and arguably the best side kick in history in the character Mazamette.

45 - Footsteps in the Night (1957) - 6.5/10 - A man is found dead in a hotel room. The chief suspect is another resident of the hotel and has fled the scene, but the detective in charge thinks that another man may be responsible. This is a decent police procedural.

46 - Cape Fear (1962) - 8.5/10 - Max Cady is released from prison after an eight year term for rape. He's out for revenge on attorney Sam Bowden and his family. Bowden was the witness who got him convicted. Cady stalks the Bowden family, but does so in a way that stays within the letter of the law. The remake was good, but I liked this one a little bit more.

47 - The House Across the Lake (1954) - 7/10 - A writer befriends a wealthy man and his wife who live across the lake from him. The wife is a seductress who likes having men fall for her and do her bidding. She becomes worried when she discovers that her husband plans to cut her out of his will.

48 - Hunt the Man Down (1950) - 7.5/10 - A dish washer saves a woman from a thief and gets his picture in the paper. It turns out that he was on trial for murder 12 years earlier, but escaped. He gets a new trial with a public defender to defend him. He claims that he is innocent of the murder and the public defender sets out to prove it.

49 - Inner Sanctum (1948) - 5.5/10 - A woman riding on a train meets an interesting old man who seems to know what is going to happen slightly before it occurs. He entertains her with a story about a man who kills a woman and then hides out in a small town. The film is serviceable enough, but kind of boring.

50 - Inside Job (1946) - 6/10 - An ex-con trying to go straight has a job at a department store. When an old associate shows up and threatens to expose him if he doesn't rob the department store's payroll, he decides to pull the job and keep the money for himself and his wife.

Still a treat to watch five viewings later. Much of the film's power the first time round comes from the ambiguity over whether James Stewart's bored, housebound photographer is genuinely onto something or is just imagining a murder conspiracy. Upon subsequent viewings, the film has a very different power as we are suddenly one step ahead of the uncertain characters. We are also able to do more investigating than what the characters do. In different windows, different events occur, some of which the protagonists note, and others of which we only observe ourselves. Love all the amateur sleuthing too.

114. The Unseen (1945) I might be dense, but I thought that Joel McCrea and Herbert Marshall were the same person.
115. Nightmare (1956) I was sure I have seen this before, turned out it's a remake of the same script by the same director. At least it has better cast.
116. Deux hommes dans Manhattan AKA Two Men in Manhattan (1959) Sexy Melville is also the main actor in this jazzy and lusty misadventures of a duo french reporters in Manhattan.

117. New York Confidential (1955) Pretty much the blueprint for The Godfather, except the protagonist is a hired gun not a member of the family. Terrific performance by the always great Broderick Crawford, the sometimes good Richard Conte, and Anne Bancroft

I wasn't sure if I would be able to claim this one for a challenge point at first, but it has neo-noir written all over it. In the opening narration, Barry Koeghan talks about how much he loved (or maybe was "in love") with a popular male student (hence why I'm claiming Nov2), then we get the rest of the film play out in on/off narrated flashbacks in which he meets some eccentric wealthy people including a femme fatale who likes parading at night outside his window. There is also a lot of lying, scheming and manipulation in the mix, most of which is best left unspoiled. Many striking visuals throughout too.

For anyone wondering, the neo-noir that this reminded me most of was...
Spoiler
The Usual Suspects
...which I don't mean as a positive. I much preferred Fennell's storytelling approach in Promising Young Woman, but this was still pretty neat.

19. Pickup On South Street (1953)

Managed to nab the Criterion edition of this over the summer at a used book/music/dvd/blu ray store. I'm sure I've watched this for past challenges, since it's an easy watch and a favorite from the golden era of the genre for me.

16. The Wrong Man (1956) #Nov4 - Featuring trench-coats/cigarettes, One of my Hitchcock first watch. A man mistakened for a serial robbery. One thing leads to another to his life's ruin. Excellent suspense like Hitchcock can.

17. I Confess (1953) #Nov14 - Alfred Hitchcock Noir, A priest is accused of a murder he didn't do. Another excellent Hitchcock first watch.

18. I Want to Live! (1958) #Nov18 - Tragic ending, A woman with a shady past hooked up with a gang that committed a murder and got charged along. Powerful.

19. Kiss of Death (1947) #Nov17 - Gangsters, A man caught in his jewel robbery. Willing to do anything to get out. Richard Widmark was awesome as one of the gangster. One of the best.

Bonus Challenge found: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 26, 27, 28

1. The Woman in the Window (1944) #Nov19 - Memories (flashback/amnesia/false memory etc.), Edward G Robinson was great in an excellent suspense.
2. To Have and Have Not (1944) #Nov16 - Set in a bar/Featuring a singer, Slow build up in the beginning, but gotten very interesting 2nd half. Humphrey Bogart played a similar guy as in Casablanca. Lauren Bacall's film debut.
3. Out of the Past (1947) #Nov11 - Featuring a Femme Fatale, Excellent movie with a complicated story of betrayal. Just about an hour and half, but a lot went on.
4. Scarlet Street (1945), #Nov1 - Stuck in an unhappy marraige, another Edward G. Robinson and Joan Bennett collaboration like The Woman in the Window. I like this one evne more.
5. Edge of Doom (1950), #Nov5 - On the run, An impulsive and impoverished young man wanted a big funeral for his mom. Problems resulted. Interesting story, but the the young man gets a bit of annoying. Some miscasts, like Dana Andrews playing a pastor.
6. Woman on the Run (1950), #Nov26 - Featuring a female protagonist - Ann Sheridan played the wife of a witness to a murder, who is disappeared. Very much Hitchcock like.
7. Dangerous Passage (1944) #Nov7 - Featuring foggy scenes - A guy traveled on a ship to collect his inheritance, but ran into questionable people. Interesting story, but cheap quality.
8. Suddenly (1954) #Nov28 - Involving an impostor - Assasination attempt on the President in a small town named Suddenly. LIke a play, but very intense. Hard to go wrong with this one when starring Frank Sinatra and Sterling Hayden.
9. He Walked by Night (1948) #Nov8 - 40's noir - Following the cop procedure in capturing a cop killer. Narrated like a documentary, which took away some impact of the story.
10. Kansas City Confidential (1952) #Nov27 - A heist story/involving thieves - A guy got mistaken for a bank robbery and decided to search for the real robbers. I did not care for it that much the first time. I don't remember why. Must be because of lots of question decision among the characters. I enjoyed much more this time around.
11. The Big Caper (1957) #Nov13 - Involving manipulation - Planning a heist, the big boss' girlfriend falls for a guy falls as they pretended to be married couple during the planning. I liked it a lot.
12. Behind Green Lights (1946) - #Nov15 - Story focused on conspiracy/corruption - A whodunit, while a politician tried to frame the daughter of the opposition during an election. Short, but effective.
13. 99 River Street (1953) #Nov9 - 50's noir, Boxer turned cab driver got framed for a murder. Quite good cat and mouse story.
14. The Kennel Murder Case (1933) #Nov21 - An adaptation, William Powell played a detective in figuring out a murder of a wealthy collector. Typical good mystery and good performances.
15. Dark Mountain (1944) #Nov2 - Love gone wrong/betrayal, A forest ranger protecting his former girlfriend who is married to a criminal. Very short. Low quality. Some good moments. Not one of the best.

11. Hangmen Also Die! (Lang, 1943) Nov13 - Involving manipulation
A film about the fallout of the assasination of the Nazi boss in occupied Czechoslovakia, Reinhard Heydrich. A Lang, Brecht and Eisler collaboration.

12. The Dark Knight (Nolan, 2008) #Nov29 - Featuring a vigilante
Watched this on a 4K Blu-ray. I still enjoy it.

13. Following (Nolan, 1998) #Nov24 - An antihero protagonist
More like an experiment in how to make a film the cheapest way possible, Not very intereting, I think.

14. Le Samouraï (Melville, 1967) #Nov4 - Featuring trench-coats/cigarettes
World cup winner in the "trench-coat and cigarettes"-category. An incredibly cool film. Has there been a more influential film about hired killers?

After discovering her husband's injured dead body under the window of their multi-story house, a writer finds herself accused of murder when all evidence indicates that he could not have simply fallen in this gripping French drama. Sandra Hüller is well cast in the lead role and the bind that she finds herself is really quite something; informed by her lawyer that nobody will believe that he just fell based on forensic information, the only defense that she can use is that it was suicide, but was he suicidal? A film that keeps everything deliciously unclear and forces us as viewers to come to our own conclusions.

A depressed private detective finds new purpose in life when hired to solve a local murder in this neo-noir with a comedy edge. The title comes from the fact that the protagonist was a local celebrity as a teenager, solving small mysteries at school and the film's very best scenes are actually its earliest ones as we see him as a teen sleuth, correctly predicting movie conclusions and operating out of a tree house. While the melodrama sometimes gets in the way of the laughs, there are some great moments as an adult too as he gets trapped in the closet of a young girl and as he gets overconfident after doing drugs.

Three by Joseph Losey:
118. The Sleeping Tiger (1954) Young Borgarde is confused and wants to kill and steal because he has daddy and mommy issues that can be magically solved by psychoanalysis. I kept waiting for a twist end that never came.
119. The Intimate Stranger (1956) A woman claims to be a lover of a married man who doesn't know her, the man is not sure if she's blackmailing him or if he's crazy. Pretty good stuff.
120. Time Without Pity (1957) Another good one, the cinematography is especially great here.

Non-English Noirs:
121. Aru koroshi ya (1967) Another fun "Hired Hand Gone Mad" this time in Japanese.
122. Minagoroshi no reika (1968) A highly stylized serial killer revenge story, I quickly lost interest in the story but it's so good aesthetically that kept it good throughout.
123. Un flic (1972) Not a Red Circle but still a solid Melville, with a 20 minutes silent heist utilizing a giant magnet to open locks.
124. El aura (2005) This is like "Being There" but it's a criminal.

A tale of betrayal and revenge set against the rarely-featured backdrop of professional jai alai.
Jai alai noir! A subgenre that deserves more development. I'm still looking for another example.

15. The Hidden Face/La cara oculta (2011) * 96 min. Nov25 - Involving a disappearance
An orchestra conductor's girlfriend disappears and the police investigation turns up nothing. Then it gets darker.
16. Hardcore (1979) * 108 min. Nov3 - Featuring a cynical detective
Great performances by George C. Scott and Peter Boyle, but Season Hubley beats them both. The journey that VanDorn has to make from his Calvinist beliefs in order to search for his daughter is more interesting than the sleazy world that he has to endure in his search, and his TULIP explanation of Calvinist theology makes Niki's Venusian theology (and everything else in the movie) seem sane. Boyle's Mast is a perfectly cynical detective, nonchalantly playing all sides.
Spoiler

Once you go noir...
1. Klute (1971) #333 #Nov26 - Featuring a female protagonist
2. Miller's Crossing (1990) #382 #Nov17 - Gangsters
3. The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) #967 #Nov24 - An antihero protagonist
4. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) #999 #Nov13 - Involving manipulation
5. Suture (1993) #692 #Nov19 - Memories (flashback/amnesia/false memory etc.)
6. The Mysterious Mr. Valentine (1946) #979 #Nov5 - On the run
7. Criminal Court (1946) #843 #Nov16 - Set in a bar/Featuring a singer
A fun enough classic noir that's all about lawyers lawyering. Also kinda fun to see how different laws/procedures you get away with on TV/Film change over the years.

8. Kiss of Death (1995) #822 #Nov22 - A remake
Remake of the 1947 film of the same name. Solid neo noir. Nick Cage was good as an unhinged villain with feelings.

9. Prisoners (2013) #Nov25 - Involving a disappearance
One of my favorite films, and a masterpiece at that, so I thought it was due for a rewatch. Jackman is unbelievable in this, and the direction is amazing.

Dark companions of a sleepless night:

125. The Naked Street (1955) Anthony Quinn can buys anything or anyone.
126. Hit and Run (1957) Featuring creepy laughs of an innocent plot twist.
127. Key Witness (1947) Inventors of weird gadgets , like in Gremlins, always make interesting protagonists.
128. Night Editor (1946) Ice cold femme fatale story told through flashbacks.
129. Crossroads (1942) For better or worse, I find it hard to take William Powell seriously, something in demeanor is always silly.
130. Experiment Perilous (1944) I love Tourneur and Lamarr is always wonderful to watch, but this film goes in circles to appear more serious than it's potential.

As one might expect from the title, this an anti-Communism propaganda drama with lots of heavy-handed dialogue regarding the supposed evils of Communism. What one might not expect is that the film also has echoes of a decent paranoia thriller. The opening scene is particularly strong with a seemingly ordinary man and woman on the run from mysterious unnamed persons. We also get some great parts later on involving Shepard Menken as an excommunicated party member. Whether it be looking out of his window at night to notice that he is being watched from cars below, or wandering the streets at night deep in thought, tension absolutely simmers. This is not really Menken's film though, and Robert Rockwell is a bit bland as the main guy.

I plan to watch Black Rain (1989) for the December War challenge. When I looked for it in my library's computer system, I found your Black Rain (1989) and knew that I had seen it so I got confused for a second. Searching for the director instead led me to the right film.
