2024 Challenges: Voting for 2024 Nominations (deadline: Oct. 16)

#1

Post by blocho »

For the past two weeks, we have nominated potential 2024 Challenges in this thread. There are 50 nominations in total. We will now commence voting on these nominations. The nine best performing nominations will be placed into the 2024 schedule.

As we have for the past three years, we are going to use private message voting.

It is hoped that this will encourage participants to vote for options that they actually want to see run in 2024 rather than just options that they see as doing well in a publicly visible poll. With this in mind, I request that you do not use this thread to list which options you have voted for. Once voting has closed, I will publish a list of results.

Private message voting also gives us the ability to allow power voting (giving multiple points to certain options), which cannot be done with an open poll. When selecting the nine options that you would like to make it into next year's schedule, you will be able to award:

- 3 points to one option;
- 2 points to three options; and
- 1 point to remaining five options.

You do not have to vote for nine options -- you can vote for fewer if you wish. Please make it clear which options you want to power vote. Your ballot might look like:
EXAMPLE ONLY wrote: Long Films - 3
Sports Movies - 2
1970s - 2
Samurai Films -2
Razzie Nominees - 1
Sight and Sound Lists - 1
Personal Top Lists - 1

Holiday Films - 1
From now until voting concludes, I will update this post with a list of people who have voted.

So, without further ado:

Please send me a private message with up to 9 of these options that you want as an Official Challenge in 2024. Click on each option below to find some explanatory notes.
1940s
This challenge has occurred twice before, most recently in 2019.
1950s
This challenge has occurred three times before, most recently in 2020.
1960s
This challenge has occurred three times before, most recently in 2020.
1980s
This challenge has occurred three times before, most recently in 2020.
21st Century
This challenge has occurred once before, in 2019.
Academy Awards
This challenge has occurred ten times before, most recently in 2023.
AFI Lists
This challenge has occurred once before, in 2012. Includes the official lists, the unofficial lists that were published (film scores, 10 top 10, movie quotes, heroes and villains, any others) as well as the nomination lists.
Anthology Films
This challenge has not occurred before.
Banned Films
This challenge has occurred once before, in 2019.
Biography/Based on a True Story
This challenge has not occurred before.
Black Films
This challenge has occurred twice before, most recently in 2020. Includes the official Slate Black Film Canon, films directed by black filmmakers, and unofficial lists like “The Black Film Archive” created by samlowery, which collects films that “have something significant to say about the Black experience; speak to Black audiences; and/or have a Black star, writer, producer, or director."
Bronze Medal Hunt
This challenge has not occurred before. Pursue bronze on a few official lists of your choice.
City Breaks
This challenge has not occurred before. This is basically a Run the City challenge. Participants would watch five movies set or filmed in a city and then move on to another city.
Coming of Age Films
This challenge has not occurred before.
Conquer the Time
This challenge has not occurred before. One movie from each year based on the chronological setting of the movie. For example, if you saw Saving Private Ryan, you would cross 1944 off your list. If you saw Blade Runner, you would cross off 2019.
Cult/Grindhouse
This challenge has occurred seven times before, most recently in 2022.
Degrees of Separation
This challenge has occurred three times before, most recently in 2017. Every movie posted must share a connection with the previous one.
Directed by Actors
This challenge has not occurred before.
Experimental
This challenge has occurred once before, in 2021.
Films of the Recently Departed
This challenge has not occurred before. This challenge would cover deaths in the previous year and pertain to anyone involved in film-making, such as directors, actors, writers, cinematographers, composers, etc.
High IMDb Rating
This challenge has not occurred before. Only films with 8.5/10 or above on IMDb qualify.
Historical Films
This challenge has occurred once before, in 2011.
In Competition at Cannes
This challenge has occurred once before, in 2019.
LGBTIQ+
This challenge has occurred four times before, most recently in 2023.
Literature on Film
This challenge has not occurred before.
Locarno Film Festival
This challenge has not occurred before.
Low IMDb Rating
This challenge has occurred four times before and will occur for a fifth time in November 2023.
Maximalist Films
This challenge has not occurred before.
Miniseries
This challenge has not occurred before.
Minority and Lesser Used Languages
This challenge has not occurred before. The main idea is to watch films from smaller language communities. Irish is nominally the first official language of Ireland, but in practice there is a very low production in Irish. Guarani is the majority language in Paraguay, but it would fit such a challenge. Finland-Swedish or French-Canadian are more difficult, but they would also be part of it.
New Releases
This challenge has occurred twice before, most recently in 2023.
One Film from Each Genre
This challenge has not occurred before.
One Film from Each ICM List
This challenge has occurred twice before, most recently in 2022.
One Film from Each Year
This challenge has occurred twice before, most recently in 2022.
Performance
This challenge has not occurred before. Music, stand-up, dance, etc. And would include documentaries about musicians and music videos.
Pre-Code Hollywood
This challenge has not occurred before.
Religion & Spirituality
A Religion, Cults & Sorcery challenge occurred in 2022, though that's slightly different from this challenge.
Run the Actor
This challenge has occurred twice before, most recently in 2023.
Run the Director
This challenge has occurred four times before, most recently in 2023.
Run the Writer
This challenge has not occurred before.
Same Story, Different Films
This challenge has not occurred before. Watch at least 3 different versions of the same original story, whether direct remakes of one film or just different adaptations of the same novel/play/comic book/etc.
Shorts
This challenge has not occurred before.
Sound Films with No Dialogue
This challenge has not occurred before.
Submissions for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film
This challenge has not occurred before. This is more than just the five movies nominated for Best International Feature Film each year. Every country has the right to submit one film for this award every year. Out of the list of submissions, which totals about 80-90 in recent years, the nominations are chosen.
Time and Memory
This challenge has not occurred before. This would include any and all time travel/time loop films, but also films that proceed entirely in backwards chronology (i.e. Memento, Betrayal) and films that deliberately follow an achronological pattern, leaping about in time -- Cloud Atlas, Evolution of a Filipino Family, Once Upon a Time in America, etc. And films where memory, and how it shapes us and how unreliable it can be, is of great importance -- Edvard Munch, India Song, Citizen Kane here. Memory should be a major theme throughout the work.
Travel the USA
This challenge has not occurred before. Try to find a film set and/or shot in each US state (can add territories as well, if wanted). Run through a 2nd time around if one completes the 50 states once.
TSPDT
This challenge has occurred seven times before, most recently in 2022.
Unofficial Films
This challenge has occurred six times before, most recently in 2022.
Waves from around the World

Weird Movies Lists
This challenge has once before, in 2022.

Sure.

There are fourteen voters so far. Forty-eight of the 50 nominations have received at least one point. The current leader in points is a challenge that has not occurred before.

12 points with 28 voters were enough to make it last year, so I guess those two will do it this year. Which criteria are we going to use this time in case of tie?

I think that last year there was a tie and we had a quick poll to decide the final spot.

I think we should do a snap poll for any ties for the final spots, like last year.

With only two brand new challenges —Pre-Code and genres, right?—, we don't seem to be very fond of novelty. Could we see the individual ballots?

Awesome. Thanks for doing this, blocho.

I'm esp. excited for-
One Film from Each Genre
One Film from Each Year (loved doing this as an unofficial/ongoing challenge)
Pre-Code Hollywood (since I had a 1930s minor focus this year and some of those fall into this realm)

Relatively good results. One of my nominations made it (One Film from Each Genre).

From the voted challenges there are only two that I have little to no interest for: Pre-Code Hollywood and Cult/Grindhouse.

Very sad that Run the Actor didn't make it.

Pretty disappointing results for this voter, but I'm glad that One from Each Genre/Year, Cult/Grindhouse and Pre-Code made it in.

That wasn't intended to be a criticism, just a mere observation. I may not look like the right person to say it, yet half of my votes went to challenges never run before. It's also worth noting that there are only two new challenges among the top nine but six in the following nine. So, perhaps this continuity has to do with a lack of room too.
