Two friends who stage fake live streamed exorcisms find themselves in a bind when their latest actress actually gets possessed in this exorcism film with a difference. The film explores the live streaming aspect really well as we see their followers go up while of course none of the thousands watching consider contacting the authorities. And, as per Spree, there are some great live chat comments, though most of these are flashed too quickly on screen to properly read. We do, however, see reaction shots from scattered onlookers around the world, as well as audible comments and gasps.

B4 - Only Weird Weapons Will Work
While I was expecting this to be just a possession movie, we also get some demonic creatures along the way and there are a host of things here that could be considered weapons, but my favourite is a crashed ceiling fan whose blades keep spinning even when lying on the ground.

12. Don't Let Her In (2021) - 6/10
Short and sweet Full Moon cheesefest about a couple letting a seemingly demonic lodger into their home and reaping the consequences. At 60 minutes long, a bad-good movie that doesn't wear out its welcome.

Set in superstitious medieval Wales, this initially feels like a torture porn movie as a mute teenage girl is subjected to various forms of torture because she is unable to audibly deny the accusation of being a witch. As the film progresses though, it becomes apparent that she can talk but is a select mute. Fortunately the endless torture vanishes during the film's middle section, but the middle third is also the slowest paced and dullest section of the film as she shacks up with a survivalist in the woods. The final third of the movie though is actually pretty good with left-of-centre plot turns and grisly violence.

22. The Cleanse (2016) #BINGO B1

Cronenberg vibes are deliciously strong in this tale of a depressed man attending a retreat to "get pure" where he discovers that his body's impurities can manifest themselves. To say much more might ruin a fresh experience of the film, and watched with minimal expectations, it does an amazing job making the retreat seem weird and ominous; he even has to sign a waiver in case of death! On the same note, the film has some surprisingly heartwarming bonding (to be as vague as possible) and this is actually one of those rare movies that feels too short/abbreviated. Amazing practical effects on hand either way.

B1 - Horror in the Middle of Nowhere
I knew that this film was about an isolated retreat; the creatures were unexpected bonus that helped me to claim another bonus point. ^_^

3. The Conjuring 2 (Wan, 2016) #745
I't's been a decade since I saw the first one, and I enjoyed that one. I didn't really like this sequel. As with all jump scary films it is best to watch with others, and I saw this one by myself.

4. No One Will Save You (Duffield, 2023)
I liked the alien invasion, but the CGI was not good enough, it was always painfully obvious she was fighting drawings of aliens. Very forgettable film.

5. M3GAN (Johnstone, 2022)
Much better than I anticipated, but I had low expectations. I thought it would be more like Child's Play with an evil doll, but it wasn't really evil, just afraid to die.

6. Halloween (Green, 2018)
This was just boring.

7. Villmark (Øie, 2003) #BINGO D1 Europe
Began the Norwegian horror wave. Still an effective slasher, with some very good characters.

8. Dead of Night (Crichton, Cavalcanti & Dearden, 1945) #54
Nice little collection of ghostish stories, obviously a very influential film.

9. The Killer Shrews (Kellogg, 1959)
Boring. And bad.

10. [REC] (Balagueró & Plaza, 2007) #71
Very well made and effective found footage-film.

5. Lust of the Vampire (1957), #351, 6.0

A little short on atmosphere for Bava, but a fun mash-up of police procedural and gothic horror, with a sprinkle of mad scientist.

13. The Mist (2007)

Feature length adaptation of the short story by Stephen King. Saw this back around the time it came out and only really remembered it for the infamously downer ending, which upon this latest watch, was definitely the most memorable and noteworthy aspect of it. Other than that, it's a perfectly functional thriller for what it is, but contains a great many of King's writing tropes and cliches, and the effects have not aged very well either. Worth a look, but repeated viewings haven't made it go up all that much in my estimation.

14. The Happening (2008)

Even though neither The Village nor Lady in the Water were the critical or box office successes their director had enjoyed before, it was this single film that cemented the public's perception of M Night Shyamalan from a reliable provider of confident, slick genre thrillers to a complete buffoon that had no idea what he was doing - at least until The Visit started him back on the career resurgence he's currently in the midst of. As for me, I've always had a soft spot for this one, and let me tell you, being a defender of M Night online in between 2008 - 2015 was my own personal Vietnam, although time and patience have vindicated me, at least somewhat. :whistling:

Back to the killer plants vehicle on hand, there's a few things that still strike me as worth praising, even amongst its myriad of very obvious flaws. Firstly, this was Shyamalan's first R-rated feature and he takes full advantage of that to an almost comical degree - I obviously can't confirm this, but it almost feels like he's channeling his frustration over the mixed to negative reception of his two previous works and is punishing humanity at large with some of the most satisfyingly brutal and downright mean-spirited bursts of violence from any major release around the time it came out. Night is definitely an old fashioned and sentimental filmmaker at heart, but every so often he has a mean streak and nowhere is that more clearly realized than in the sudden, grisly acts of self-mutilation brought on by plant toxins in this.

Another, much newer manner in which I have a stronger appreciation for this film is how much it hits harder during and after experiencing a literal pandemic. This captures a very specific, genuinely chilling mood of unreality amidst social breakdown and on rewatch it's clear that Shyamalan is not inept but rather has a perverse sense of humor about human confusion and panic that sometimes got a bit lost in translation, and only took living through an adjacent situation to fully grasp. Add to that the always solid cinematography and music found in all of Night's earlier films, and this amounts to an uneven, but truly unique experience, for better and yes I'll admit, sometimes worse.

One of those dramas which shouldn't really stay in a horror genre list, if I remember correctly?

2. Host (2020) #832 (6,5/10)
After being so entertained by the recent Deadstream and the Searching/Missing duology, both which restored my faith in the, um, screen queen genre - which I previously denied because of the shittiness of Unfriended - I decided to check out Host. It does its job rather well, is supershort and features annoying characters and questionable decisions in an amount I can tolerate.

3. The Mummy (1959) #259 (6/10)
Hammy outdated Hammer horror with a few nice sets, a half-simplistic-half-cool mummy and quite nice finale. The flashback exposition in the MIDDLE OF THE FILM almost killed the pacing for me though. The Hammer factor again is the biggest pro and con; the filmic qualities always suffice to bring them above a 5, the rest mostly hinders them to surpass good 7 territory.

Revolving around two criminals who lock a home owner in her basement and take over her house, this is a pretty interesting thriller to begin with. There is an especially intense scene as her ex swings by the house and is seduced by the female criminal (posing as a friend) who ends up killing him in the middle of a passionate embrace. After this strong start though, the film becomes a little stale and repetitive as it pivots between the locked lady trying to convince the more submissive male criminal to let her go, while the female criminal keeps a tight grip on her man. Cool knife attack near the end though.

It's another busy and awkward October for me this year, my mind's on other things, so no chance for Uncle Leo I'm afraid. I have a huge backlog of streaming titles that I'll wade through, but hopefully I'll be able to move on to some more interesting titles later.

1. Beit al ashbah [House of Ghosts] (Fatin Abdulwahhab, 1951) 4/10

A guy has to spend a month in a haunted house to gain an inheritance. Sounds good, right? No, this is an extra-stupid guy-in-an-ape-costume farce that would have felt dated a decade before. Felt Abbott and Costello-y, which I enjoy when it works, but here it really didn't.

2. Stranger Things S04E09 (142 minutes) 7/10

Not a bad end to the season. I was worried about the runtime, but with all the threads to tie up I can see why they did it. I think the show has lost some of the luster it had in the first season, but I'm still looking forward to what they have in store for us in season 5 (if it ever comes).

3. El-Qasr el-Maloon [The Cursed Palace] (Hassan Reda Sr., 1962) 6/10

Too much melodrama, with over the top music underscoring every raised voice and intense stare, and the comic relief grates, but it's in a class above House of Ghosts above

4. Zombieland: Double Tap (Ruben Fleischer, 2019) 7/10

I have to admit, I enjoyed the ride from beginning to end. It felt pretty similar to the first one, but had enough new material to stand on its own, I thought.

5. Villains (Dan Berk & Robert Olsen, 2019) 7/10

Yep, it's a flawed movie, predictable in places, kind of silly in other places, but I liked the chemistry between Jules and George and I thought Skarsgård had a strong screen presence, too. Pretty light on the horror, but that wasn't what it was going for.

11 - The Stepfather (1987) - 7.5/10 - #359 - A man murders his family and sets up a life in another town, looking for that dream of the perfect family. He marries a woman with a teenage daughter, but the daughter doesn't like him and acts out as a result. Is he going to have to start all over again? This was formulaic, but fun nonetheless. Terry O'Quinn was good as the stepfather and so was Jill Schoelen as the daughter.

12 - The House of the Devil (2009) - 7.5/10 - #165 - A college student in the 1980s needs money so she takes a babysitting job at a remote manor. However, she discovers that things aren't quite what they seem. This is kind of a slow burn, but it worked for me.

13 - Troll 2 (1990) - 5/10 - #883 - This was pretty dumb with bad acting, but it was still kind of fun.

14 - Vampire’s Kiss (1988) - 5/10 - #748 - Well that was certainly something. Nic Cage in full wacko mode. There are a few fun things in the last half hour, but I didn't like the movie as a whole that much.

15 - Black Sabbath (1963) - 5.5/10 - #157 - This is a horror anthology that is introduced by Boris Karloff who also stars in one of the segments. The stories were pretty boring for the most part. I did laugh at the bit at the end of the film, though.

16 - House on the Edge of the Park (1980) - 5/10 - #992 - A rapist/murderer gets himself and a friend invited to a party with a few wealthy people and then proceeds to terrorize them throughout the night. It certainly isn't a very nice film.

Stop! Hammer Horror Time
1 - The City of the Dead (1960) - 7.5/10 - #443
2 - The Mummy (1959) - 6.5/10 - #259

4 - Ginger Snaps (2000) - 7.5/10 - #127
5 - It Follows (2014) - 7.5/10 - #118
6 - Mandy (2018) - 2/10 - #688
7 - We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) - 6/10 - #795
8 - The House with Laughing Windows (1976) - 5/10 - #458
9 - The Invitation (2015) - 6.5/10 - #523
10 - City of the Living Dead (1980) - 5/10 - #333

I'll probably not going that far in the challenge anyway. I'll get started and may get the ball rolling as I watch more.

1. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) #173, one of the greatest comedy horror ever. Possibly the best Abbott and Costello
2. Curse of the Undead (1959) #BINGO C1, Interesting combination of a western and a horror. Not great, but watchable.

13. Malevolent (2018) - 4/10
Run-of-the-mill supernatural horror that pits a team of fraudulent paranormal investigators against ghost kids at an English estate. Also there's a subplot about one of them pathetically attempting to escape the Florence Pugh friendzone.

14. Saw IV (2007) - 4/10 *rewatch*
The one that rewrote the Jigsaw origin story and made him a revenge killer, which is a weird angle considering the events of "Saw III."

Paranoid and delusional, a young female ex-con has trouble determining whether she is really seeing and hearing things during a late night shift at a 24 hour petrol station in this horror flick. The first hour or so of the film is particularly effective with a real sense of reality blur and all of the smallest noises setting her on edge - as well as the weird customers that come to store after hours (and more of this would have been a plus). The final 45 minutes of the film are comparatively less effective as the film becomes more of a clichéd slasher and the final boo scene feels entirely superfluous.

D1 - Horror in the Middle of Nowhere
I didn't realise at first that this was going to become a slasher movie, and it isn't totally one either, but upon investigation it does appear in several slasher lists. Fortunately for a bonus point hunter like myself, the gas station is in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately for our protagonist, it also means little chance of her getting help when the horror kicks in.

7. The Timekeepers of Eternity (2021) ★★★★

The Langoliers has been a favourite of mine since I was in single digits and of my last viewing has remained a 10/10 despite its flaws. This film takes everything awesome about it (mostly Toomey and the creepiness and the creatures), focuses more on Toomey, shaves off the 2 hours or so of meandering and some crappy acting and replaces the cheap 90s tv movie aesthetic with a stylish black and white animation that really heightens the atmosphere. Just a really awesome edit/remix that captures all the stuff I love about the original miniseries (and gives it a better ending).
Spoiler
1. Pearl (2022) ★★★
2. Talk to Me (2022) ★★★½
3. She Dies Tomorrow (2020) ★★½
4. Slumber Party Massacre II (1987) ★★½ #BINGO D4 - drilling guitar
5. The Evil Dead (1981) ★★★★½ REWATCH | TSZDT #21
6. Straight on Till Morning (1972) ★★★
7. The Timekeepers of Eternity (2021) ★★★★

3. Frozen (2010) #546
This is pretty awful. The script is terrible, and the acting’s not much better. Almost every shot is a closeup to hide the fact that the actors are not actually on a ski lift. And I love how the temperature is supposed to be freezing, but no one’s breath is visible. And how everyone complains about getting frostbite on their faces but never bother to zip up their coats fully.

4. Ghostwatch (1992) * 92 min. #719
The smug cynicism of most of the TV people is nicely set up during the slow start, the alternating thrills and lulls when the action starts effectively keep open the question of the reality of what is happening, but the ending seemed too over the top. Quite impressive for a TV movie, or any movie.

A cash-strapped family make money through selling rejuvenating zombies bites in this wacky comedy. The film is rife with humour before they even set about their scheme as the zombie is mistaken for a drunk and a toilet pervert before being chased in hilarious long shots by neighbourhood dogs. The best scenes though come from all of the customers screaming out in pain but eagerly queuing to get bitten. The film unfortunately becomes less interesting in its second half as familiar zombie apocalypse tropes creep in with over-the-top action to boot. When trying to be a comedy though, this really delivers.

A4 - Only Weird Weapons Will Work
There are a few weird weapons put to use here, but my favourite is the toilet plunger when the zombie is found in a public bathroom. No better to way to stop a zombie from attacking you than through whacking it on the head with the handle of a plunger, right?

Began the Norwegian horror wave. Still an effective slasher, with some very good characters.
I thought the Norwegian wave started with Fritt vilt (2006). I'll have to add this to my list.

Also adding Chamber of Horrors, The Cleansing Hour and The Timekeepers of Eternity.

:mw_confused:
I couldn't figure out this film's reason for existing. What is the selling point, raping and terrorizing the rich? David Hess? This was more empty and deliberately offensive than A Serbian Film. One of the worst films ever made.

11. Antarctic Journal (2005)
★ ★
A group of Korean explorers in the Antarctic lose grip on reality in a way similar to an old Journal they find along the way. Watched this for Song Kang-ho, who can do no wrong in my book. He's under-used here and the film can't commit to being supernatural or logical. Didn't help that none of the other explorers make an impression so they blur together.

12. Cuento de Navidad (2005)
★ ★ ½
Christmas Horror directed by Paco Plaza ([REC]), this knows how to slide from reality into Horror Fantasy. Goes from a dark crime story into a well-done zombie thriller with incredible ease and little explanation. Way too many pop culture references in the dialogue, and if I start to think about it I have a lot of questions about the kids actions, but the brief runtime (72min) and exciting climax make it almost good.

Timekeepers is really quite something (watched it in January this year). Chamber of Horrors is actually kinda boring but the kills are certainly quite interesting. I had low expectations for The Cleansing Hour, which might have helped me appreciate it more. I'm not big into exorcism movies, but this one had a social media twist that I dug.

Unwelcome in a superstitious small town where he has been called upon to deliver an autopsy, a coroner comes to question whether there is something supernatural going on in this Mario Bava horror movie. Shot with vivid colours, the film looks pretty great, especially glowing green spider webs all round, and scattered images, like a staring ghostly child at a window, having real staying power. There is also a really cool spinning spiral staircase chase, as well as a nifty loop chase sequence in the final fifteen minutes that seems to defy known physics. As a narrative though, the film only treads familiar tropes.

I think Fritt vilt was the first to get accolades and much interest outside of Norway.

Anybody else notice that max hasn't posted anything here in more than two days? I recall that we had a horror challenge a few years ago in which the host mysteriously vanished. Hopefully that isn't happening again, though of course this is the right challenge for a host to spookily vanish during. (D:)
