ICMF-FF7: Jury Invitation

#1

Post by zzzorf »

For the 7th year running the iCMForum will be hosting its very own Film Festival. This years festival is slated to take place in the 4 weeks between Monday 13 November until Monday 11 December. The purpose of the festival is to highlight under-seen films (less than 10,000 votes on IMDb) from around the world that were released in the last few years, with this years window being between 2020-2022. The festival will highlight 50 different films. 40 of these films will be split into 10 slates of 4 films each, 5 of them are area specific being Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and English-Language Independents, the other 5 are genre specific consisting of Animation, Arthouse, Documentary, LGBTQIA+ and "Just Before Dawn". The other 10 films though are the cream of the crop and will make up the Main Slate and that is why I am here now.

For the last 9 months I have been joined by last years programming team of St. Gloede, Fergenaprido, filmbantha, Beavis, Onderhond and Sol as well as new member, former Jury member matthewscott8, where we have been watching countless amount of movies that had potential to be included in the Festival. From these watches we nominated 183 films between us that we felt deserved to be considered for those 50 places. With us watching each other nominations we have nailed it down to 39 movies we believe are the best of the lot and are potential to fill out the Main Slate, but to get to our final 10 we leave that choice up to the Jury for this years festival.

This thread is an open invite to anyone who wants to be on the official festival jury this year

Before the programmers can fill out the Minor Slates, we invite all people who want to participate in the festival and can commit to the obligations of the Juror listed below, to sign up to the jury. In return for this commitment you can choose amongst you from the 39 movies that we have rated most highly what movies will end up on that Main Slate and therefore consist of your main obligation.

While the Jury does decide the make-up of the final Main Slate the Programming team does hold the right to name a Centrepiece film for the festival and once again we have decided to do so, choosing Playground (Un Monde) [2021] to take the first place on the Main Slate. This therefore leaves 9 spots for the jury to fill from the remaining 38 movies chosen by the programming team for consideration.

What does a juror do?

- An official juror commits to watching the Main Slate, and at least one of the Minor Slates
- They have a say in creating the Main Slate from the below list of titles that are the very best from what the programmers have found
- They have the month of October to sign up as a juror in this thread and decide together on the 9 slots to fill
- This can be by discussion, voting or otherwise. Selections can be made on how much you liked what you already saw, how much you'd like to see a movie, or other criteria of your choosing: make the Slate as attractive as possible for all participants.
- During the festival they watch and discuss movies along with everybody else, although they could also work ahead a bit if they want before the festival has started
- After the festival they present their winners of the Main Slate and each section, with as much or as little fanfare as they choose (but a small jury report would be a fun thing to add?).

NB.
- We have established as a rule over time that any casual participant who enjoys the festival and has watched a complete section automatically becomes an unofficial juror on that section.

While the Jury has all of October to choose the Main Slate, the earlier a consensus is made the more time the programming team has a chance to fill out the Minor Slates with any unchosen movies as well as ones that didn't make this pool of movies before the start of the Festival and proper promotion of the Festival can commence. I will state though you don't need to rush, take your time and consider things properly and if you are only finding this post later in the month, do not fret, you are still most welcome to join the Jury.

In my next post I'll present the list of 38 titles we created for the jurors to select their preferred and ideal festival Main Slate from.

We hope you're already as excited for the festival as we have been making our selections
Please join along by signing up as a juror
and mark the festival dates on your calendars!!

How to Vote
The jurors decide 9 of the 10 films that make the main slate. You can vote on them here based on your interest in seeing them or how well you think they will fit the line-up, how exciting it will be to discuss them or any other reason that may away your opinion.

Voting sheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

For every film, enter corresponding letter to your interest:

High (H): 4 points (Max: 7 picks)
Medium (M): 2 points (Max: 10 picks)
Low (L): 1 point (Max: 10 picks)
None (leave blank): 0 point (No Max)

The nine films with most points qualify, ties are resolved with highest number of High votes (then M votes, etc).

I will fix it when I get to my computer tomorrow, I just copy and pasted from our spreadsheet and I assume the link has changed throughout the year.

Also glad to see you join the jury, I remember you were thinking about it last year and it's great to have you as part of the team.

Yes, it must have changed from its English-language title to the original one at some point on iCM. I've changed the link in your post now, don't worry about fixing it.

Thanks, looking forward to it.

Just so everyone is aware celldweller7 is a member of my Facebook groups for the Flickchart website, the same place last years jury member DavidConrad came from (and who is just trying to work out if he has time to be involved this year). I believe he will be a great addition to the Jury team.

Is the plan for us to enter our scores on a shared spreadsheet again this year?

It is of course up to you how you choose the movies for the Main Slate. That method was the way it was done at least the last two years and seemed to work well but if you all want to use a different method that is your prerogative.

I liked that method, but I've never set up a shared spreadsheet like that so I was hoping that somebody who had done so in the past would set it up again. I'm looking forward to going through the available films listed above.

This is the most exciting line-up I have seen in the last four editions.

Having said that I want to avoid last year’s experience with watching too much stuff I don’t really have a strong interest for so I will cherry pick and not commit to jury duty. I might well end up watching the same numbers of films though.

Really happy to hear that and great to have you in as a participant.

Of course, the same rule applies as last year, so if you see all the 4 films in a slate you can automatically vote for the winner as a juror.

No you don't have to watch the movie again unless you want to but remember "rewatches are good for the soul". Basically as long as you can rate/rank the movie against the rest all is good.

Anyway, great to have you on board. I just added your name in the spreadsheet so whenever you are ready you can add your points towards the main slate selections.

So glad to hear that. Even though I've only been a part of the festival for 3 years even I know that without you being involved somewhere it just wouldn't be the same.

Excited to join this community! I'm a Chicago-based film professor, film critic, festival programmer, writer, and director. I've seen several of the films on the current list that I really loved. Looking forward to seeing more!

Great to have you involved in this Mike.

Just so everyone is aware celldweller7 is a member of my Facebook groups for the Flickchart website, the same place last years jury member DavidConrad came from (and who is just trying to work out if he has time to be involved this year). I believe he will be a great addition to the Jury team.
Thanks Wayne!

Brilliant, great to get some new blood in, and as we haven't interacted before, very nice to e-meet you as well, Mike.

I made a Letterboxd list to help me find streaming options etc. Might be useful for others as well.

Really happy to see lots of new and familiar faces signing up to be jurors this year - extending a big welcome and thanks to everyone who has joined so far. I can't wait to see what you guys and gals choose for the main slate!

There are no limits on the number of jurors so if anyone else is considering throwing their hat in the ring then please feel free to do so. This is shaping up to be a very exciting year and I am certain it is going to be a lot of fun for everyone involved

I hesitated a lot but I'm in as well to be a juror.

I think the feedback made last year (about the number of slates, the availability of the films etc.) was not really taken into account and that you programmers rushed into doing business as usual.
But that doesn't mean the festival isn't one of the highlights of the year in the forum and I'm happy to be part of it.

Great to see you join in again, pitchorneirda.

We did have a few discussions about changing the format following the feedback from last year, including to an "In Competition" (expanded main slate) and "Out of competition" slate only, which seemed to be leading as the top alternative. We also had some discussions about slightly expanding the main slate and merging/cutting others, but in the end the compromise was that we try the existing format for one more year and see how it goes.

We're also under new leadership with zzzorf this time around, and getting fresh blood for the jury box, so if we need to make changing after this edition will be a great time to do so.

As Gloede said, at the beginning of the year we programmers did have a discussion on the format and made the decision to stick with the old format for one more year and revisit next year if we should change then.

I am going to try a new format in the threads though to make things more compact and easier to find. Instead of seperate threads for every minor slate there will just be two, one for the area specific ones and one for the genre specific. I'm hoping this may help things be easy to find and more able to keep discussion happening.

So yeah don't think your feedback fell on deaf ears, everything was considered and is still there for possible change in the future.

Hello again all! I am rejoining as a full juror, having greatly enjoyed the experience last year. I've often and eagerly recommended some of the movies that were in 2022's slates - including one to celldweller7 that I think he'll like a lot when he watches it!

I've just entered my votes for the main slate, one of which I have already seen. (I didn't vote for it, though it might be nice to have a "freebie.")

Please remind me - do I select my minor slate now or later? I did Asia last year since it's my professional wheelhouse, but I'm leaning toward Animation or LGBTQIA+ this year; animation as a treat to myself, and LGBTQIA+ because I've spent 2023 watching mostly directed-by-women features and I imagine there's going to be some overlap there.

Glad you're back David. It's up to you if you want to state your minor slate intention or wait till the movies are revealed that make them up which is at least 2 weeks away.

In terms of the movie you gave Mike I know he has seen it, you're basically waiting for the day he reviews it which he's doing chronologically so you probably have a little bit more to wait for that.
