Having never the book that this is based on, this film felt to me like it had a few unanswered questions. Quite a bit of it felt generic and rushed too, most notably the race-against-time towards the end. The animation style was quite nice though and I liked how crazy the mansion looked. Same for the candy factory, though the ability of the candy factory to produce amazing near-magical inventions was something that I couldn't quite wrap my head around. I guess the whole thing was quite acceptable in a kids-adventure sort of way with children who prove themselves more resourceful than their parents.

24. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2022, Andy Suriano & Ant Ward) [*****]
--- I love TMNT, and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie edition is closer to the roots than the arty-farty 2023 film. Still keeps the juvenile nature of the teens a little too much on the nonsense side of things, so it's not necessary better. But it's okay and provides a solid dose of action.

25. Baishe: Yuanqi [White Snake] (2019, Amp Wong & Ji Zhao) [*****]
--- I can't say I cared much for what was going on, but I got lost in it. More dreamy than anything else. Pleasant one filled with romance and action.

26. Bai She 2: Qing She jie qi [White Snake 2: The Tribulation of the Green Snake] (2021, Amp Wong) [******]
--- More ambitious than the 2019 film, but I'm not sure about the portions that took her out of her dreamy world. So it might be a case of being too ambitious for its own good. Visually, it's a step up. Still in that territory where what was going on wasn't that important.

27. Shanhai Jing: Zaijian Gaoshou [Goodbye Monster] (2022, Jianming Huang) [****]
--- Adventure with some adorable creatures and the type of polished action associated with big Chinese animation films. Okay time, but doesn't distinguish itself enough from the usual output.

28. Paw Patrol: Ready, Race, Rescue! (2019, Charles E. Bastien & Keith Chapman) [**]
--- Thought I'd try it on a soon-to-be 3-year-old. Failure. He acknowledged the race cars and then went on with his business barely giving it any attention at all. Regardless, this is the usual Paw Patrol style cartoon with racing as the gimmick. With the right audience it'll work, even if it didn't here.

29. Ruben Brandt, a gyujto [Ruben Brandt, Collector (2018, Milorad Krstic) [*****]
--- Art theft into a animated adventure. Has a lot of cool things going on. Sometimes a little off, sometimes it hits the mark. For the most part a interesting one.

3. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
I’m not sure why this got so much hype. It’s entirely rote. Certainly not a memorable movie.

4. The Illusionist (2010)
This movie is a tribute to Jacques Tati. Based on an unproduced Tati script, it features a protagonist who looks a lot like an elderly Monsieur Hulot and is actually named Tatischeff, which was Tati’s birth name. Tati even shows up himself briefly in a clip from Mon Oncle. The Tati character is a stage magician who goes on tour in the UK of the 1950s and acquires the company of a young woman along the way. She becomes a surrogate daughter as they make a home in Edinburgh. Though filled with moments of charm, this is ultimately a sad movie, even a tragic one, as the protagonist slowly realizes the world has passed him by. His relationship with the young woman is a temporary and illusory one. And its evanescent quality dovetails with the decline of his career, as the world of live performance gives way to the television age. My only quibble is that the characters are limited. They seem like people without a past, and we never learn what experiences have led them to such lonely lives.

3. Elemental (Sohn, 2023) comedy
Booring.

4. Whisper of the Heart (Kondo, 1995) drama
I enjoyed it, more library-centric stories please.

5. Isle of Dogs (Anderson, 2018) Western Europe stop motion
Very cute, I think it would have worked better as a shorter film. I really didn't think the story managed to hold interest for the whole film.

Shorts
b. Fanden i nøtten (Cornelius, 1917) Nordic 4 min.
Commercial, one of Norway's earliest animated films.
Spoiler
1. Wreck-It Ralph Breaks the Internet (Moore & Johnston, 2018) USA children
2. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Hosoda, 2006) Japan anime
3. Elemental (Sohn, 2023) comedy
4. Whisper of the Heart (Kondo, 1995) drama
5. Isle of Dogs (Anderson, 2018) Western Europe stop motion

Shorts: 12/80 min
a. I Love to Singa (Avery, 1936) USA
I have heard the "I Love to Singa"-song several times before but can't pinpoint exactly where. Fun little parody of Al Jolson - Owl Jolson.
b. Fanden i nøtten (Cornelius, 1917) Nordic 4 min.

29. Meikyû monogatari (Neo Toyko, 1987) #Japan + China (Japan) #Anime #ICM Top 250 Animated
7/10

30. Psiconautas, los niños olvidados (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children, 2015) #Western Europe (Spain) #Scifi/ Fantasy #ICM Top 250 Animated #sacmersault personal favorites
Clever, but too dark for my tastes right now. 5/10

31. Blood Tea and Red String (2006) #Anglo-America + AuNZ (USA) #Stop motion
Cool style, didn't love the story. 5/10

32. Rocks in My Pockets (2014) #Eastern Europe (Latvia) #Directed by a Woman
6/10

33. Anina (2013) #LATAM + Caribbean (Uruguay) #Made for Children #sacmersault personal favorites
Was this something you grew up with sacmersault? Or something family had liked? The style is really cool. 6/10

34. Saving Sally (2016) #Rest of Asia + Oceania (Philippines) #Sci-fi/Fantasy
Animated similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the main characters are human actors with the animation in the world/characters around them. Totally agree with one letterboxd review, the film showed potential halfway through when one character says "But—it's just too simple. I mean does this have to be too black and white? The monsters, do they all have to be bad?" and then the story does nothing with that, the characters are all too black and white. 2/10

35. Al Maht (All Eyes on Him, 2021) #Africa + Middle East (Kuwait) #Comedy
Had to slow this down to .75 speed to try and read the subtitles. Not my kind of humor. 3/10

36. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) #Anglo-America + AuNZ (UK) #Stop motion #ICM Top 250 Animated
7/10

37. Yoru wa mijikashi aruke yo otome (The Night is Short, Walk on Girl, 2017) #Japan + China (Japan) #Anime #ICM Top 250 Animated #sacmersault personal favorites
The style on this is amazing, but I really didn't like the senpai storyline. 6/10

8. Heaven and Earth Magic (1962) * 67 min.
The title and maybe the mummies at the beginning suggested the intent was metaphysical or spiritual, but the content seemed random, and the soundtrack was annoying.

Watched for a fourth time (and the first time in more than a decade), it is easy to see why this is one of Pixar's best regarded films. Sure, not all of the jokes land when one knows they are coming, but the dentist office chaos (with stunned waiting room reactions) is one of the funniest scenes ever filmed, while the "Mine!" seagulls offer some great running gags. What really stands out about the film though is how much it has to say, from the grieving, controlling father learning to let go, the younger fish trying to express himself, to the dentist who actually believes that he did good by "rescuing" Nemo.

More of a rehash of the original than anything else, this sequel involves Nemo and his father tracking down Dory who gets lost on a quest to find her parents. On the plus side we get great new characters in grumpy seals and an octopus with chameleon-like abilities and the filmmakers try to do something different in that most of the adventures occur on dry land rather than in the dangers of the sea. The plot dynamics are nevertheless so similar that this entry pales by comparison. The action set pieces also feel a little over-the-top, but the film has a cute after-credits scene and passes the time fine.

Lap 5:

45. Tito and the Birds (2018), #LATAM, #MadeForChildren, 7.5

Great little Brazilian gem about a child inventor trying to stop an outbreak of paralyzing fear by... talking to birds. It's a solid sci-fi metaphor, that surely got garbled up in COVID pandemic readings. The art style is wonderfully weird: scratchy and horror-tinged, but not too scary. Could have been even better if it had stuck the landing.

46. The Pacification of the Wu (2020), #RestOfAsia, #Adult, 4.5

A violent account of a specific battle during the Lam Sơn uprising where the Vietnamese pushed out their Ming occupiers near the end of the 15th century. Unfortunately, it feels like all the cutscenes from a military strategy game strung together; nothing resembling character development or deeper themes. The art is Sin City style: black and white except for a single highlight color. Neat to see a Vietnamese animated feature and to learn historical details of a war I'd never heard of.

47. The Timekeepers of Eternity (2021), #WesternEurope, #SciFi/Fantasy, 8.0

Thanks to flavo5000 for this. Shocking how much better The Langoliers is when cut down and given an avant-garde treatment via crumpling and tearing printed-and-reassembled frames. The tearing is thematically appropriate: a key character rips papers to calm down, the plane travels through a tear in space-time, the Langoliers shred time, etc. and the director finds some brilliant visualizations.

48. Mirai (2018), #JapanChina, #Award-Winning, #Top250, 7.0

Not personally a favorite by Mamoru Hosoda, but this is nevertheless very well-crafted and original. Unusual to see a film about a very young child dealing with a young child problem (newborn sibling jealously), that is sure to be understood only by a much older audience.

49. The Cosmic Eye (1986), #Anglo-America, #DirectedByWomen, 5.0

Combines depictions of various indigenous mythologies with a light story about aliens observing Earth as it faces self-induced extinction. I was pretty into the trippy primitivist art and freeform hippy non-plot (might resonate with DIY-loving, new sincerity members of Gen-Z?), but it's severely damaged by the inclusion of excerpts from earlier Hubley shorts that don't fit in at all. These are also presumably why some sources credit Faith's husband, John Hubley, as codirector despite him dying 9 years earlier.

50. Grandma Lo-Fi (2011), #Nordic, #Documentary, 8.5

Quirky documentary about an Icelandic grandma turned outsider artist who, at the age of 70, started making music on a Casio and released 50+ albums, frequently employing found-sounds she recorded in her kitchen or with pets. Despite being classically untrained and decidedly niche, she influenced the Icelandic music scene. Accompanied by a short whimsical animated and stop-motion sequences, and music video covers set against the artist's own collages. Charming, unexpected, and perfect inspiration for anyone needing a nudge to start creating art.

51. Nayola (2022), #AfricaMiddleEast, #Drama, 8.5

Three generations of women across two time periods deal with the Angolan Civil War and its aftermath. Heavy, uncompromising, and unwilling to settle for easy answers or tidy narratives, but also beautiful and imaginative. Animated in Portugal, but with Angolan writer, cast, setting, and subject matter. Thank you, jdidaco, for this one!

52. In This Corner of the World (2016), #Anime, #Top250, 9.5

Gently devastating slice-of-life set in Hiroshima and neighboring Kure during the years and months leading up to the dropping of the atom bomb. Despite the pervasive tension hanging over our heads, you can't help getting attached to the down-to-earth carefully-realized characters. Exquisite animation and attention to detail.

53. Old Czech Legends (1953), #EasternEurope, #StopMotion, 5.5

Jaw-dropping stop-motion puppetry, especially for 1953. Puffs of breath when characters breath in winter, fireflies at night, clothes the rustle in the wind, dolls that mount horses and ride over hills, and I could go on-and-on. Too bad the legends themselves are such a slog.

54. Madagascar (2005), #Comedy, #Top250, 5.0

Road to El Dorado made me wonder if I'd been unfair to avoid Dreamworks so much over the years. Madagascar reminded me why they aren't my jam. Movies that throw every joke at the screen to see what sticks tend to annoy me. The zaniness can be obnoxious, but it also occasionally jolted things out of save-the-cat routine. Penguins were fun.

An animated film from Kuwait is intriguing to me even if it isn't a masterpiece. Would it be worth it for animation tourism if I go in with low expectations?

11. 3.0* - No Dogs or Italians Allowed by Alain Ughetto

A cute European stop-motion animation. The film isn't all that ambitious and it treads familiar paths, but it is executed with plenty of charm and the runtime is quite short, so fans of stop-motion films will definitely find something to enjoy here. I just didn't find it all that memorable or significant. The film tells the history of an Italian family moving to France during the war. They start their story in a small mountain village in Italy, but the area is poor, and hoping to give his family a better life, the narrator's grandfather decides to move away. They cross the mountains to France, where they start over. The wartime setting feels familiar, the stop-motion animation is decent but never remarkable. The characters are pleasant, the pacing is slick and there are cute touches sprinkled throughout, but it all amounts to little. I was hoping for something that would make an actual impact, but if you don't mind a short, animated family chronicle, go for it.

Nice on Philippines! It’s very tempting to have all the rest of Asia come from South Korea, but it’s fun to look to the other countries too. I’m not sure there are any non Aus/NZ Oceania options at all.

I’ve definitely watched worse movies on my trip around the world. I think some of the humor may be lost in Kuwait culture references, and some of the humor is very gendered, the main character is often criticized for not acting enough like a man. But it’s only an hour long, you could do worse.

I started watching Humanity Has Declined (2012), but I don't like it very much, so I think I'm going to drop it.

I feel like I'm running out of good short anime series to watch. I have about 10 left on my plan-to-watch list, but none of them really look very interesting to me.

5. My Old School (2022)
Comments in the UK/Ireland challenge.

6. Flee (2021)
I’m rather split on whether this was the right movie to watch during my second bout with Covid. On one hand, perhaps something lighter would have been better for the moment. On the other, I find myself more emotionally labile when I’m ill, so I felt this movie more than I would have otherwise. It’s an animated documentary about an Afghan refugee who flees his home as a child following the end of the Soviet occupation and eventually makes his way through Russia to Denmark. Early on, we learn two rather extraordinary aspects of the story. The protagonist has told his fiancé little about his painful background. And he has lied to the director (and on-screen interlocutor) about the death of his family in Afghanistan. Unraveling the reasons for these lies/omissions is part of the narrative appeal of one of the best movies I’ve seen this year.

On a mission to take down his arch nemesis, a secret agent discovers that he is a cybernetic organism and that his nemesis is too in this James Bond spoof. The humour is rather hit-and-miss with a lot of lame wordplay gags and the silliness of everyone mispronouncing Brian Blessed's character name (Goudphater) so that it sounds like "good farter". The sets and model work is amazing though and the puppet design are pretty great with Goudphater looking especially creepy with a grin that is way too wide. There are some decent action scenes and special effects (exploding glass windows) too.

Lap 6 complete! I'm going to try for one more lap before Sunday.

55. Moomins and the Comet Chase (2010), #Nordic, #DirectedByWomen, 3.5

The 2nd feature-length stop-motion adaptation of the beloved Tove Jansson children series about hippo-esque creatures on goofy adventures. They somehow got Bjork, Max von Sydow, Stellan and Alexander Skarsgard, Mads Mikkelsen, and Peter Stormare. The cast sets out to stop a comet, gets distracted, and survives due to pure luck. I didn't get it. Mildly cute, but stilted, random, and vacuous.

56. Heroic Times / Daliás idök (1983), #EasternEurope, #Award-Winning, #Top250, 8.0

A bleak and violent mediaeval story of a commoner turned knight, whose temper and personal chivalric code puts him at odds with the harsh class and political realities of the era. The reason to watch this is the oil-painting artwork, which is intense and fantastic, and I'm sure a royal pain to animate. Unfortunately the film recycles a lot of sequences and uses pans over stills to afford the fully animated scenes, which is forgivable, but a shame.

57. You Animal! / Hayop Ka! (2020), #RestOfAsia, #Comedy, 6.0

A breezy love triangle about a perfume saleswoman, her working class boyfriend, and a wealthy architect customer. Lots of sexual banter, but so much obvious innuendo it gets stale. All the characters are animals, so this will be a goldmine for furries. A crisp Cartoon Network style, local Filipino color, and frank discussions about sex and social climbing. I quite liked the twist ending.

58. 25 April (2015), #Anglo-American, #Documentary, 7.0

Kiwi documentary about the Gallipoli campaign in WWI, where Australians and New Zealanders suffered terrible losses in a series of grisly military operations. 6 diary accounts are combined with rotoscoped actors to reconstruct animated interviews, which were very well done but left me with mixed feelings (thinking about where we are going with AI and using people's likenesses after they die without permission). Good mix of perspectives and tons of little historical details that must have come straight from the journals.

59. One Thousand and One Nights (1969), #JapanChina, #Adult, 3.5

Having seen Belladonna of Sadness by the same director-writer pair a few years ago, this feels like a big step down. The animation is frequently energetic and frisky, but the story is a mess and the pacing erratic. Should have stuck to a couple of the source stories instead of stitching together dozens. Off the top of my head, cut the island of giants, treasure competition, and tower of Babel. Problematic sexism throughout; I think sexy adult animation has a valid niche, but this is so one-sidedly male wish-fulfillment that it didn't do much for me.

60. Fatih Sultan Mehmet (1983), #AfricaMiddleEast, #Drama, 1.5

I would never have guessed at the start of this challenge that I would be watching multiple films about 15th century wars! This Turkish-made movie is also supposedly the first feature-length animated Islamic movie and tackles the fall of Constantinople.

I'll lay out up front that I feel it is important to consider historical events from multiple angles and reject the popular Western romanticization of the Crusades as noble/righteous/etc. That said, this is propaganda of the worst sort just from the pro-Ottoman perspective. Long, pedantic, and egregiously biased. Jumps through hoops trying to get the audience rooting for an aggressor 10 times the size of the besieged city. The ending is beyond the pale, quoting the English dub: "The people greeted his magnificent procession with flowers and songs of joy. He guarantied safety, security, and well-being for the persons and their property. He commanded his troops not to treat anyone with injustice." Compare to surviving accounts that record Mehmet allowing a day of looting and rape in which thousands were murdered and the remainder enslaved.

The animation is competent, about at the level of Saturday morning cartoons from the era, but struggles with human figures in motion. The only redeeming quality is the play-by-play military history.

61. The Angel in the Clock (2017), #LATAM, #SciFi/Fantasy, 7.0

Charming Mexican fantasy about a little girl with leukemia who wishes she could stop time. She is tricked by an evil demon called The Timeless who feeds on people who live exclusively in their memories or dream only of the future. She teams up with airship pirates and feisty fairies for adventures that teach her to make the most of the present. Despite the dark themes, this is a vibrantly colorful and intricately patterned. If I'd seen it as a kid it would have been a favorite.

62. No Dogs or Italians Allowed (2022), #WesternEurope, #StopMotion, 6.5

A family history about Italian itinerant laborers. The big-eyed, derpy claymotion belies their endlessly hard lot, which only gradually improves across a century of privation, exploitation, and conscription. A nice innovation is that our human-sized interviewer occasionally interacts directly with the doll-sized world of the flashbacks, including his narrator-mother.

63. Minuscule: Valley of the Lost Ants (2013), #MadeForChildren, 6.5

Combines CG and live-action to show a cute, clever, and fully wordless adventure about a young ladybug who teams up with ants to carry picnic loot back to their nest. In the second half, the nest is attacked by a red ant army. Not terribly ambitious, which was the right call. Maybe better than Bugs Life, and certainly Antz. And if you only see one film from this post about siege warfare, prefer Minuscule to Mehmet.

64. Inu-Oh (2021), #Anime, #PersonalFavorites, 8.0

This was almost another ancient Asian war movie, but thankfully instead it was a revisionist musical about misfits-turned-rockstars singing unauthorized chapters of The Tale of Heike, particularly concerning the aftermath of the Dan-no-ura sea battle. Great music, wild staging, and a pair of very memorable stars.

I did some minor rejiggering of my bonus game tags from lap 2. No change to the point totals, but I've set a personal challenge to see how many region-category combinations I can hit.

A robot boy is implanted with human memories and has to work who he is here; Blade Runner this is not though and with all personal identity dilemmas only ever hanging in the backdrop (and weird mood changes in his father), the film mostly just serves as a showcase of animated action and cutesy comedy. Some of the comedy really works with a delightful garbage can dog in the mix, but most of the action lacks genuine stakes since Astro Boy never seems vulnerable and is capable of doing pretty much anything. The character designs are not half-bad though and the climactic action is at least colourful.

12 - Elemental (2023) - 8/10 - A fire family emigrates the Fire Lands to Element City where members of the various elemental races all live. Years later, they have built a home and shop for themselves with the father looking forward to the daughter taking over the shop. Then fate takes a hand in things. I enjoyed this one quite a bit. It has a good romance and very nice animation.

13-16 - Walt Disney Treasures: The Complete Goofy (326 minutes) - I bought this dvd set when it came out, but never got around to watching it until now. I'd seen some of the shorts before. I wouldn't rate these among my favorite Disney shorts, but there are some fun ones in there.

Chloë Grace Moretz provides a spunky vocal performance here that channels Kick-Ass, and her character's initial shape-shifting is absolutely breathtaking as she keeps changing between various land and aquatic creatures while crashing through a palace. Rather than focus on her uncanny ability to transform on whim though, the film focuses more on its messages and the proving-innocence plot, the latter of which is never engaging. The messaging is certainly quite decent with many interpreting the film as a movie about minority persecution and being proud to be yourself, but I craved more transformation weirdness.

12. 4.0* - The Simpsons Movie by David Silverman

Being a pretty big Simpsons fan when I was younger, I caught this one in theaters when it was just released. In a sense, it's little more than an elongated TV episode, but they did make a real effort to create something a tad more cinematic. The animation was given a proper upgrade, the plot feels less rushed and the film is every bit as punny and silly as I remembered it to be. Revisiting the film was pleasant and comfortable, and considerably easier to tackle than going back to the series. In the end, it's just another Simpsons adventure though, there's nothing particularly grand or singular about this film, but for once I'm okay with that.
