Today, some reviews!
27. Gauche the Cellist (1982), #JapanChina, #Anime, #Top250, 6.5
Relatively early Takahata. Simple, but with depth. So much more subtle and sedate than western films for kids.
28. Surviving Life (2010), #EasternEurope, #Drama, #Top250, 7.5
A man falls in love with a fully imaginary woman that appears in his dreams. Psychoanalysis shines a light onto just how awkward the romance is. I'm basically always up for Svankmajer's silly, weird shenanigans.
29. Tux and Fanny (2019), 4.0
Lo-fi CG in which two friends vacillate between stoner wisdom and internet humor. Episodic, but the plot points carry over and the surprisingly detailed lore accrues in interesting ways.
30. Oink / Knor (2022), #Award-Winning, 5.5
A by-the-number child-and-pet story that really could use a twist or two. Redeemed by the world's most adorable stop-motion piglet puppet. Watched with an unfortunate English dub.
31. Aachi and Ssipak (2006), #RestOfAsia, #Adult, #Top250, 7.0
It is fun how often 45MinuteZoom and I are on parallel tracks this month! A few times we've been pretty far apart in ratings. I'd rather defend April and the Extraordinary World; I'm not a good spokeperson to defend this extended exercise is juvenile excess, as it isn't my typical taste. But A&S has a very distinctive voice and fully commits to its vision. Admired the breakneck pacing, energy, and intensity. It is aggressively offensive, but so consistently so that I never took any particular instance serious, and a few times were so audacious they stole a laugh.
32. Long Way North (2015), #Nordic, #Top250, 8.0
Excellent adventure about a Russian debutante that goes searching for her grandfather, an explorer who never returned from the North Pole. Compelling characters and animation. The structure and story beats are sometimes a little too clean and predictable. I liked that villains were absent, temporary, or background figures to the main events. Danish co-production.
33. The Green Wave (2010), #AfricaMiddleEast, #Documentary, 6.0
Documentary about the 2009 Iranian election, the excitement leading up to it, the voter fraud, and the violent crackdown on reformists and protestors afterwards. Very colorful high-contrast animation, but the imagery sometimes crosses into sensationalism. A worthy cause, but wobbles trying to assemble blog quotes into a multi-faceted narrative.
34. The Bears’ Famous Invasion of Italy (2019), #WesternEurope, #SciFi/Fantasy, #PersonalFavorites, 8.5
All-around wonderful! The character designs and the Sicilian landscapes are instantly captivating and extremely memorable. Fun story, that covers a lot of ground, and obeys its own logic while not taking itself too seriously.

I enjoy the showdown between FilmWalrus & 45MinuteZoom a lot
Very cool watchlists, you two!
Since I don't want to appear as that very weird guy who only comments on other people's challenges but doesn't actually participate in any of them, here I come with my adventurous September deep dive into the fantastic world of animation (of all kinds):
1. The Emperor's Nightingale [Cisaruv slavík] (1949) (6/10)

The sequel is meant to be better than the original (at least from what I have heard) so I decided to revisit this before watching the second film later this week. Guess what? I liked this a lot more the second time round. Yes, it relies too heavily on gross-out gags and lame wordplay gags, and sure, the film could have built up more ambiguity over whether or not the pigs are hostile. For all its flaws though, the film paints an acute look at how at how anger can build in an individual and negatively impact on one's life to point that others lose trust in you. The film is also pretty creative for a video game adaptation.

The basic story has some promise here as a grasshopper ventures into a dangerous human city. For the most part though, this quest takes a backseat to a side romance and bizarre attempts by a couple of other bugs to stop him romancing his girlfriend. Most disappointing of all though is just how far removed stylistically the film is from the Fleischers' animated shorts. The Fleischers' surreal Betty Boop and Koko the Clown b&w shorts are among the greatest things ever committed to film; working with a story that offers limited surrealism and second-rate colour processing, the charm here simply isn't the same.

Droopy, a Looney Tunes character dog.It is a dog that is always sullen and unruly, and often sad. This is a character that I cannot understand why they put such a strange character in front of children in a cartoon. I watched his filmography total of 169 minutes run. Also there is a good Dailymotion channel for Looney Toons cartons (HD) named "MK Toons", I mostly watched there.

As one might expect, this mostly feels liked an overlong episode of the show with unappealing songs and questionable subplots bloating out the length. There is a lot about the film that works though. Most notably the banter and chemistry between the siblings is as great as ever with a particularly funny and suspenseful part as they stake out and sneak into an insane tree house mansion. The story is also framed around Louise trying to prove to herself that she is not a "baby" despite constantly wearing her bunny ears, which is a wise choice since she was always the most dynamic character in the show.

I assume from your review you also watch the show, but is the movie also watchable if you don’t? The show always seemed fun, but I never seen it but now there are so many seasons it became a daunting task to watch it. So maybe the movie could be a fun way to get acquainted with it, or isn’t it?sol wrote: ↑September 20th, 2023, 2:16 pm17. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (2022)Spoiler

I've never seen the tv show, but I watched the movie back in February and enjoyed it. I think it could definitely serve as a good introduction. I planned to watch the first 2 or 3 seasons for this challenge until tv series were disallowed, but will watch them sooner or later.Lonewolf2003 wrote: ↑September 20th, 2023, 4:49 pmI assume from your review you also watch the show, but is the movie also watchable if you don’t? If you declare your film Proustian, as Yonfan explicity does, you better make it live up to it - gorgeous, bewildering, stunningly erotic, stimulating on all senses,

it reminded me the immense pleasures of little things, including watching, with sensual admiration and a little bit of sadness, the many times Simone Signoret smoked on screen,

So many fun leads for me to follow-up!
Also glad to see From Inside getting watched! I remember seeing it at the St. Louis film festival years ago and being blown away. The theater was basically empty because the festival scheduled it on the same timeslot as Waltz with Bashir, and the latter had all the animation buzz at the time.
Looks really interesting, and I've never seen an animated film from Greece. I'm adding it to my to-see list unless you advise against.
Sounds great! The screenshots on the film's webpage were also really impressive. Any hints on where to find it?

6. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004) * 100 min.
I generally like sequels that aren't imitations of the first movie, and this meets the test: more elaborate and more beautiful animation, probably due to technological advances, and a story that moves a top supporting character into the new lead and provides a more complex plot. After rewatching Ghost in the Shell I realized how easy it would have been to successfully churn out sequel after sequel with minimal plot variations, so the filmmakers deserve credit for aiming higher.
7. The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) * 85 min.
Funny and fun.

It is super trippy and surreal. There's no dialogue, but it's not hard to follow. The story is very easy to follow and the animation nothing amazing. The interesting thing about the movie is that it took, something like, 13 years to make by a visual artist. Some images are supper fun, and it looks like what I imagine being on drugs is like.45MinuteZoom wrote: ↑September 17th, 2023, 4:11 pmsacmersault wrote: ↑September 14th, 2023, 5:06 am 12. I've watched it twice and love it, and the image that sacmersault chose makes me want to watch it again. My kids and I were excited after I read that Christiane Cegavske was working on a new feature, but eventually I realized that it wouldn't be finished anytime soon. I'm sure that she's doing it for love, not money.45MinuteZoom wrote: ↑September 17th, 2023, 4:11 pmDo you recommend this one? So this isn't a traditionally animated film. It's essentially a re-edit/tightening of the '90s TV movie The Langoliers with bizarre and fairly innovative/interesting stop motion effects overlaying the film. Similar to rotoscoping but made to look like crinkling paper. It's actually very effective and improves on the original film quite a bit. I dug it.FilmWalrus wrote: ↑September 20th, 2023, 11:44 pm So many fun leads for me to follow-up!

I have seen a bunch of episode in my time (mostly from whenever it just happened to be on TV) but probably no more than 15 or 20 overall, and I certainly haven't seen all of the seasons. It might help to know a bit about the characters going in, but I imagine that watching two or three episodes would be a decent primer.Lonewolf2003 wrote: ↑September 20th, 2023, 4:49 pmI assume from your review you also watch the show, but is the movie also watchable if you don’t? The show always seemed fun, but I never seen it but now there are so many seasons it became a daunting task to watch it. So maybe the movie could be a fun way to get acquainted with it, or isn’t it?sol wrote: ↑September 20th, 2023, 2:16 pm 17. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (2022)

This nicely re-jigs the formula of its predecessor as the pigs and birds must learn to put aside their differences to stop a common enemy who threatens both their islands. While the first film could be considered a study of anger, this follow-up could be considered as a look at relevance deprivation. The sequel is also downright hilarious at times, all depth aside, with some particularly funny moments involving a giant eagle costume, nicknamed "Harvey", with a gaping open mouth. A winking seal side character also offers rife amusement throughout and a Letterboxd avatar for shugs (never knew that before).

Lap 4 all in one post. The USA and France both tackle Japanese stories, and Japan tackles a British novel.
35. Bombay Rose (2019), #RestOfAsia, #Drama, 6.5
An Indian drama about the lives of poor street vendors with a painterly art style and patient pacing. Doesn't take the usual path of Bollywood romances.
36. Turning Red (2022), #Anglo-America, #DirectedByWomen, 8.0
Enjoyed this a lot. It was the first non-sequel from Pixar that I skipped in theaters, mostly due to the trailers, which made the fairly nuanced protagonist seem insufferable. Loved the specificness of the time + place + culture.
37. One Day I Saw 10,000 Elephants (2015), AfricaMiddleEast, #Documentary, 7.5
Longer take because this was more interesting then expected, has basically no reviews online, and I only found it searching for things to fulfill the bonus game.
In the 1940s a team of Western filmmakers came to Spanish Guinea – now Equatorial Guinea – and shot short reels depicting indigenous people and their activities, before obsessively hunting for a legendary lake said to be the home of 10,000 elephants. Their journals are preserved in archives along with thousands of their photos, but the only surviving member of the expedition is their Guinean porter, Angono Mba. In a series of interviews 70s years later, he describes his travels with vivid, poetic detail and moving humanity, in telling contrast to the narrow-minded colonial attitudes in the narrated diary entries of the Spaniards.
Living in humble exile and forgotten about for decades, yet still deeply reflective, Mba is a fascinating and complicated subject. The film climaxes with his river raft hallucination of the elephant herd, which his Western masters are too 'civilized' to see, and a series of revelations about his personal pains and enduring empathy. The film is visualized through a variety of animated mixed-media techniques that are crude and sometimes alienating, but capture the blend of documentary evidence and subjective memory from which history is made.
38. Away (2019), #EasternEurope, #SciFi/Fantasy, 7.0
Wordless, Latvian, solo-made CG film. Simple story and visuals, but well told. The music really adds to the emotional undercurrents. Well-modulated in terms of pacing. Hope this guy does more. (Thank you to icm forum members for bringing it to my attention)
39. When Marnie Was There (2014), #JapanChina, #Anime, #Top250, 8.0
An asthmatic girl is sent to distant relatives at a seaside marsh for fresh air. Their she discovers a mansion and Marnie, a mysterious blonde girl who becomes her first friend. It soon becomes clear, even to the protagonist, that Marnie is imaginary, but she also represents a much-needed connection to her family's past. Another great anime that captures the interior life of an introverted youth.
40. Boogie (2009), #LATAM, #Adult, 2.5
Jingoistic, misogynistic American assassin Boogie lives to indulge his bloodlust and narcissism, leaving a trail of violence and chaos in his wake. Adaptation of an Argentinian comic. It is satire, but indulges too deep in the material it supposedly vilifies. Only occasionally did the shock humor work for me. Not for most viewers.
41. Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), #StopMotion, #Top250, 8.5
Fantastic stop-motion visuals, a chain of creative set pieces, and a reasonably good fantasy/folklore story. The villains are actually scary, which reminded me of some of the films I loved growing up in the 80s.
42. The Boy Who Wanted to Be a Bear (2002), #Nordic, #Children, 5.5
Story of an Inuit boy raised by bears. This will sounds oddly specific, but I love the character outlines, which helped them pop in landscapes dominated by white. Someday I will watch this without the English dub and it will deserve a higher rating.
43. The Road to El Dorado (2000), #Comedy, #Top250, 7.5
I've never been a Dreamworks fan. I have a particular dislike for the Shrek movies. But I thought for this challenge I should tackle one I missed, and honestly this was a really good time. The Kline-Branaugh chemistry really crackles. Amused by the lack of language difficulty.
44. The Summit of the Gods, #WesternEurope, #Award-Winning, 9.0
Compelling French adaptation of a mountain-climbing manga. Great combination of adventure, sport, and mystery genres. Already covered by a lot of other participants here, and I agree with their sentiments.
Lap 5 up next. However, my in-laws are arriving tomorrow for a weekend of home improvement tasks so I'll be slowing down temporarily. Clearly a nefarious 45MinuteZoomian plot, and not a harmless family visit that's been on my calendar since July.

Hey when I updated the OP yesterday, you only had 2 stop-motion films. Did you forget to label one?FilmWalrus wrote: ↑September 21st, 2023, 4:50 pm Lap 4 all in one post. The USA and France both tackle Japanese stories, and Japan tackles a British novel.

So much good stuff in this thread
Wow, Away only has 69 (nicce) checks. This will likely become a forgotten obscurity in the 2030s

If you'll allow me to patch things up, the simplest fix is if I put the #Award-Winning tag on "Long Way North" and then replace #Award-Winning with #StopMotion on "Oink / Knor". See spoiler for my laps so far, with this correction, and asterisk my upcoming victory

I had to use up so many Illuminati favors to manipulate your friends into falling in love just so that later they would marry at an inconvenient time in our competition, but it was all worth it!45MinuteZoom wrote: ↑September 21st, 2023, 7:31 pmIt took some doing, but I’m glad I pulled it off. Congrats to you for convincing my friends to have their wedding this weekendFilmWalrus wrote: ↑September 21st, 2023, 4:50 pm
Lap 5 up next. However, my in-laws are arriving tomorrow for a weekend of home improvement tasks so I'll be slowing down temporarily. Clearly a nefarious 45MinuteZoomian plot, and not a harmless family visit that's been on my calendar since July.![]()
Will have a small update later, you’re setting a hard pace![]()

Did you forget to label one?FilmWalrus wrote: ↑September 21st, 2023, 4:50 pm Lap 4 all in one post. The USA and France both tackle Japanese stories, and Japan tackles a British novel.

If you'll allow me to patch things up, the simplest fix is if I put the #Award-Winning tag on "Long Way North" and then replace #Award-Winning with #StopMotion on "Oink / Knor". See spoiler for my laps so far, with this correction, and asterisk my upcoming victory
Does anyone from the Netherlands know if Knor is really considered the sound pigs make in Dutch?
