Torgo wrote: June 6th, 2023, 8:50 pm Ah, so there all of cinewest's votes and the international features went :ph43r:
He also only voted for 5 of the drop outs. I don't know why he even is complaining. If he's complaining about films that didn't make a list that didn't make it last time either?

And there is enough international features left in the list, we must not forget that a lot of international films just aren't as widely available too and that the ones that are seen have less consensus building. Everyone is going to have seen international films, but if we all watch different international features, it will be hard to vote for them in a final list.

It's still more interesting and international than most other 2010s lists i've seen on other forums. This is a well balanced and good list.
This is a less mainstream list than one thinks. I have never seen #1. Except for a few, most people I know do not know that movie. I mean, I am not surrounded by cinephiles. Four of the top 10 I didn't vote for. The only top 10 in my top ten is Ex Machina. Parasite the only other in my top 30. Lots of people I know do not like Parasite. The top 2 are non-English films. If you ask ordinary film watchers to vote, maybe Inception or La La Land the only films making it. Being a moderate film watchers, I personally find this list very interesting. I guess the intensive cinephiles prefer surprises as comparing to previous polls. Yes, it would have been more interesting. I do see enough big jumps and drops to warrant surprises.

Anyway, Thanks Lonewolf for hosting. I am glad to be able to submit the list at the last minute, not like last year when I missed it.
Thank you for making this comment. I fully agree with that. I think it's a bit ridicilous that this list is seen as too mainstream, the only reason why the criticism is there is because of the trend compared to last time, but otherwise this is totally not a mainstream list. Go to every site where users / participants create a favourite films of the 2010s list together/jointly and you get a very different looking list, i mean just look at reddit 250 to have a glimpse on how it would look like.

Secondly, and understated a lot, this decade OBVIOUSLY has more than 250 great films. I even already have more than 250 films i think are at least good from this decade, and those are just films that are my taste or that i have had the time/took the effort to watch those. Just take a look at the entire top 500, arguably the entire top 500 Is very qualitative. If you want more surprises, you need bigger lists.

One of the things that ensures i remain a member on this forum because participating in those, and using these lists to watch films i haven't seen is something I really enjoy, so thank you for that.
Thanks

films approved of by Hollywood Reporter and IndieWire are connected to Oscar Winners and A24. The "American Indie" rocked in this poll.

I think it's interesting to analyze the results, and consider the influences, don't you?

And there's the rub: The primary influences just aren't that interesting, particularly the nature of the big climbers.

59 out of the 89 (66%) Oscar nominee made the final list
Except for one, all of the other (90%) Cannes
5 out of 10 (50%) Venice
3 out of 10 (30%) Berlin
3 out of 10 (30%) Sundance

These awards are promotion for the films. Oscar is highly popular, so no surprise that many of those nominated films are seen by more people than the lesser known ones. In fact, I thought 66% is low. If I were to guess, I thought maybe around 80%. This is more of a reason people who are very knowledgeable with obscure films participate in these polls to introduce the rest of us those films even if the films rank low.

Not really a fair comparison between the various awards since, apart from the Oscars (where any Oscar recipient is counted), only the films given the very top award are being counted for the various festivals.

I'm not that sure if you've identified an inconsistency, for example I am one of the "dreck" crew. I firmly believe the Oscars is trash, and has only a random chance of selecting good films. My ballot reflects this, I think only 2 of the BP nominee stable made it onto my 100 list (The Tree of Life and The Favourite), and mostly I look down it and screw my face up. I have never really felt this forum is anti-Oscars, the few of us who are, I think we voted consistently with our views.

This is how Cahier du Cinema's list of 2010s films that made their year end top lists fared vs our poll, ordered by our poll. I still remember Jerzy Skolimowski standing before me in a cinema and stating that Essential Killing was the best film he had ever made, and thinking, "what the actual fuck my man". ICM Forum has concurred with that, not a single one of us voting for said movie, which however did make a Cahiers year end top 10. For myself, I'm more aligned with Cahiers in general than the Oscars, think around 15 of these made my top 100 vs 2 for the Oscars.
