. There are images and expressions from the film that are highly memorable, and it hits at something bleak and stark. My main issue with the film was the sound design, with the lack of sound for large portions of the film, feeling off and undercutting the tension it was trying to build. We never really understand our lead, and we are probably not meant to, perhaps weæ're just meant to be shocked or disgusted, or feel some kind of pity? The interaction and the build-up with what could be a stalker has potential, but the ending felt odd, and I was surprised it was already over. Interesting, even if occasionally frustrating. 6/10

Thanks for this well put thoughts on what is not an easy film. Obviously it wasn't a frustrating experience for me. I really like when i am not told/telegraphed how to feel. And movies that feel off an odd, as you noted, tend to do that for this reason.

Yes, I can definitely see that, and a 6/10 is still a good film for me, so I still liked it a decent bit.

A pop-y, semi-arthouse but mostly pulpy and exploitation-leaning Greek flick, with clear inspirations from Italy, especially with the Morricone/Spaghetti Western fused with euro-trash style score. The opening won me over with its almost experimental touches, though I felt like the film started to overstay its welcome a little after 30-40 minutes when it was really clear that it would just be our male protagonist frolicking around with two women, for a while without the knowledge of the other. Possibly inspired by the Beguiled but without its intensity. It is still short, compact and fun enough, even though it ended up being far less inventive and playful than the opening teased. 5.5/10

58. En el balcón vacío (1961, Jomí García Ascot)

Told almost exclusively through narrative, this compact 53 minute film deals with the trauma of witnessing the Spanish Civil War and Fascism, mostly seen from the perspective of a young girl. The opening is incredibly powerful, and while the limitations work against it a little, it is intriguing and emotional from start to finish. 6.5/10


59. Terumae romae (2012, Hideki Takeuchi) #BONUS

A pretty fun time travel film that sees a Roman thermal baths engineer repeatedly swallowed by the water and end up in random locations across Japan, intersecting with a young woman working to become a coming book writer/animator. The highlights have to be the first act where our Roman marvels at various (mostly low-tech) innovations of the present and recreate them in his own time. It is a bit too silly, but effective and fairly fresh. The next two acts are a bit less so, as characters from the present are thrown back to Rome, and the comedy is tuned down and we are left with a more of an adventure film about correcting history. The characters do not quite pop for me, but it is a perfectly entertaining film. 6/10

Der Strass is a sensory experience bringing us into the heart of a decaying East Germany, with swift contextual editing, and overt surrealistic touches as it counts down to a new era. Historically this is almost an unparalleled document as the film is made exactly as East Germany is incinerated, and becomes, in itself, a near-perfect representation of past, present and future. This is really an unprecedented opportunity, where the world changes with the film itself, adding even more power to what would already have been an explosive film.

We follow Georg, a man just turning 30, and whose birth (most likely) is depicted along with rapid intercutting of the creation of East Germany, parades, red flags and rock music. The atmosphere is pitch perfect as it plays with different quality stock and brings us into a semi-dodgy birthday party - and the introduction of a party official - who we later realize is his boss - giving him a miniature carousel, most likely a music box, of exotic worlds and a white horse on top. It seems as out of place, but still fitting as it sounds.

The party dies out, and our protagonist wanders the city alone, as the state of his life becomes more and more clear. He sees a white horse, he sees a woman, he sees gunfire, and soon he is in the entrance of a private exotic dance show. Enthralled by the dancer, he sets out to find her at all cost and be with her. Using his cover as a photographer, he gets closer, while explaining it to his colleagues as a reportage of the superiority of East German gender roles - in a fiery speech that does not end up as well as he'd hoped. All throughout, the editing, and situation, both of his toxic mental state and his relationships to the people around him are intercut with his surroundings, Marxist portraits/statues and lavish extravaganza of exotic and sexual dreams and reality.

Der Strass also takes a page out of Bunuel's playbook, casting our female lead with two different actresses, cementing the gap between illusion/fantasy and reality - and crassly so - especially as we see Georg become more obsessed, and the delusions only grow - including extreme power fantasies - almost always undercut completely.

What is further interesting is the amount of interpretations we can bring into the film, and there are so many ways we can view Georg, and "Miss Albena". At first, I thought he was representing the generation, then East Germany, then East German Socialism/the system itself, trying to impose itself on the world around it. There are extremely obvious allegories throughout, such as a mother leaving (West Germany) and, as the film nears its end, promises of new life, i.e. reunification - but it can be seen and understood in so many different ways - and I absolutely love that the film opened up so many paths of seeing it and experiencing it.

55. MURDER and murder (Yvonne Rainer 1996) #Bonus
I know Chris loves his Brechtian cinema essays but while it was interesting at times, I just found it too messy and unfocused to be very engaging. And if this is one of Rainer's more coherent narrative structures, I can't say I'll be jumping at the chance to check out more of her work in the near future.

Not just one of her most narrative films, her most narrative by far. So yes, maybe she won't quite be for you, but thanks for giving it a shot.

This is a very impressive film, that I'm still processing 24 hours after viewing it. I love the themes, the precursor aspect of the film on many aspects of french society, the brilliant way those themes are articulated, the wonderful acting and great script (an adaptation from a Romain Gary novel, which I am going to read very soon).
That's certainly a great find for me.

This gets off to a breathtaking start, full of rapid fire edits and quick title card flashes that capture the insanity of war. After this strong start though, the film descends into overly familiar love triangle territory with the main guy coming off poorly for encouraging two different women, while the idea of arriving at a place where all females desperately want you smacks of male fantasy. There is certainly some interesting though in how he essentially escapes from one battle (war), only to enter into another (love) and all of the dark shots of him eavesdropping at night while hiding in deep shadows are divine.

A visit to an old gloomy foundry in Central France that is about to be shut down becomes an opportunity to create a lyrical dissertation —visual too— on the occupation of forging, blending more or less conventional interviews with the workers with quotes from Aeschylus, Hesiod and Proudhon, and resulting in a compelling though sometimes a bit obscure filmic experience. 7/10

This is blessed by some impressive foggy shots at night and there are some memorable moments as one of the main characters has to have a finger cut off and as they become worried about being pursued at a distance while making their way upstream. For the most part though, the film plays out as an odd hangout comedy: non-urgently paced and full of shots of the men sitting around and drinking, singing about how much they love whisky and talking about the Native Americans who they hope to trade with. And clocking in at over two hours and full of narration that spells things out, it was a bit much for me.

There are some amazing widescreen long shots here but Gregory Peck's performance is what really makes the film click with his non-dialogue scenes coming off best as his body posture and facial expressions often convey all; there are some great moments of him simply standing hunched over deep in thought (see above). The romance between Peck and his bride-to-be feels a bit weird as she turns against him incredibly quickly. The film really resonates though as a tale of a man who does not want to blindly please others and who values peace more than machismo; a very appropriate western for the Cold War era.

Since I made the 20th bonus, my new nomination will be Pin (1988). I see many of you regulars have seen it already, so it's kinda perfect film not to overbulk this challenge.

Pin is somewhat of a unique, psychological thriller that sends shivers down your spine, even though there's almost none graphic violence, and certainly not one of those shlocks someone might think of when sees the IMDb poster. David Hewlett absolutely shines. There's a strong incestuous angle to it, which is at one point explicitly stated, but despite that the character played by him (Leon) is a troubled individual you could easily sympathize with - and accordingly, the main villains in this movie and the major cause of problem turn out to be Leon and Ursula's parents, a conclusion one comes to way much later because they appear very briefly, plus they die in tragic accident.

Few films are as creepy as Pin is.

As a group of German filmmakers discuss whether it is possible to make "a comedy of our times" that is "firmly grounded in reality", this gets off to an incredibly interesting start. After this solid start though, the film becomes a more middling affair, spending ages in flashback as the filmmakers discuss a romance between a professor and his maid, debating whether it would make a suitable screen story. It is a lifeless romance with the professor falling for the maid very quickly, and there is nothing funny about the love affair - when the filmmaker characters are dead-set on making a comedy. The final fifteen minutes are certainly very interesting here as the filmmakers discuss camera distances and editing techniques while summing up several scenes, but eh.

A forgotten TV documentary that shows the destruction brought to the lands of the Sami people in Lapland by the exploitation of resources at large scale —mainly mining and dam building— and other imported activities (WWII, hazardous wastes, fox farming, etc.), it’s really sad to see once beautiful and rich landscapes turned into such impoverished ugliness —particularly awful in Russia—, and the film is quite effective in conveying that feeling —despite the monotone narration and choice of dubbing instead of subtitling the locals— without resorting to over-dramatic effects. 7/10

Directing untalented performers is not the easiest of tasks and the film sort of questions whether Harvey Keitel's protagonist is crossing the line in terms of how verbally abusive he is being to carve the right performance. Sort of. While Abel Ferrara's template seems to be Burden of Dreams, Keitel never really feels like a Herzogish filmmaker with grand visions, and his project is not overambitious in scope. The biggest drawback here though is the very way Ferrara shoots his own actors. The camera sometimes gets so close that chins and tops of heads are distractingly out of frame (see above). Several grainy shots too.

Nolte is very good as a deep undercover spy masquerading as a Nazi mouthpiece who finds his life in ruins when the US refuses to acknowledge his efforts in the war. Grim but compelling.

Jeez, I need to watch something cheerful. Here's another bleak melodrama. Outside of Simon Signoret who is quite good in it, the movie is shot and acted in a surprisingly dull way as if the whole cast and crew were on quaaludes with an almost amateurish quality to it given it beat out Bunuel's Obscure Object of Desire at the Oscars that year for best foreign film.

Set in nineteenth century New Zealand, this bizarre melodrama revolves around several individuals with secret desires and hidden agendas, from closeted men, to closeted women, to a wealthy man intent on coercing a woman into marrying him by convincing her that she would do better trading under his surname than her own. There are some imaginative sets for a movie almost entirely filmed indoors. The characters constantly sound like players in a Shakespearean drama though with the overly eloquent way that they talk; they also converse at a rapid-fire pace, resulting in confusing conversations.

Very ordinary film. Would not be surprising if it's completely forgotten in 5 years. It lacks character and a proper villain given the genre. It also illustrates some of the issues i have with modern blockbusters, the need to implement humor everywhere. Simon Pegg were in my eyes a completely useless character.

Starting off as a look at a rocky mother/daughter relationship before becoming an exploration of an older lesbian couple, this experimental feature from Yvonne Rainer ultimately turns into a film about her coping with breast cancer and all of the anxieties that come along with it. All of the performers are very decent, but the clear highlights are Rainer's cameo appearances that become more and more frequent as the movie progresses and as she audibly wonders whether having "too much fun" or "all the peanuts I've eaten" could have led to her breast cancer. I didn't understand her anti-Kubrick bias though.

The male protagonist here has an incredible axe to grind as he rambles on about sterilising men and a future in which women will survive without men unless something is done (!). Philippe Leroy varies between scary and insecure in the lead role, telling his victim that he is jealous of her adrenaline surges, while also talking about wanting to "iron the quirks out of my nervous system"; he is a truly weird and unsettlingly unpredictable antagonist. The real star of the film though is the interior set design with Leroy's mansion covered in crazy-looking artwork and newfangled furniture, while secret rooms abound.

I don’t think the goal is trivialising (I wonder if some may even feel a bit offended) but suicide in this peculiar hotel looks far from the idea most people have in mind —just too placid and easy—; maybe it's just a cultural perception or maybe simply the background chosen to give this simple romantic story —otherwise well filmed— about loneliness (she says “lost and lonely” though it feels more like “boring”) a distinctive character, but in the end, it makes it feel a bit unconvincing. 6/10

This began like another entry in the "my family's maid was so wonderful" genre so popular in Mexico and South America, but it became clear fairly soon that the real subject was class consciousness and loyalties. It seemed uneven in tone, with the comedy and drama seeming to clash more often than to enhance each other. The result was good, but it could have been better.

A western influenced by Sergio Leone, directed by the guy behind the Evil Dead trilogy, and just as awesome as that sounds, this cinematic rollercoaster revolves around a mysterious woman entering a gun-fighting competition in a town run by a corrupt self-appointed lawman. Every fight is breathtaking with Sam Raimi not only utilising spaghetti western zooms-in but also adding an angular element to the mix with his camera spinning around as it zooms in. There are some amazing rapid-fire edits too, a handful of insane spinning vertigo shots, as well as typically Raimi high doses of blood and gore.

Returning to the hometown he long ago abandoned after his father's death, a writer forms a special bond with his former girlfriend's teenage daughter here. The film goes in some dark and unexpected directions in its final half-hour, and the film plays around a bit with chronology. The whole thing is well acted and the overall story is really sad and thought-provoking once everything comes out, but I found this to be a pretty lethargic watch for the most part.

84. A Chump at Oxford (1940)



This gets off to a bit of a slow start with Laurel and Hardy initially redoing their undressed salad routine and fumbling their way through odd jobs before arriving at Oxford more than twenty minutes in. From the moment they arrive though, the film never lets up with a hilarious night-time prank involving an arm in a bush and crazy shenanigans as they are tricked into believing that the dean's quarters are their own. Where the film gets really interesting though is in the final fifteen minutes as a coincidence kicks in, which leads to Stan giving arguably the most layered and dynamic performance of his entire career.
