They had a knack for picking films that have remained at least a bit off the curve; take the 2nd and 5th films, which are from really big name directors, Rene Clair and John Ford - but are among their lesser-known sound films, each only represented on the Locarno list. But they've been ahead of the times too - giving the award to one of Raul Ruiz's first films, long before anybody had heard of him outside of a very few weird viewers in Chile. Also one of the first places to recognize Kubrick as somebody special. I always find it a neat list when I look at it - over half of the films are unique to it, probably another reason few have made the effort. Can't say I have myself though my batting average on the 21 I've seen is VERY high. Maybe I should prioritize it.Torgo wrote: ↑September 10th, 2022, 10:51 pmMost people wouldn't know how obscure this list is.
You almost enter the Top 500 with 8 checks out of 89 (!). 5 checks from almost a hundred of this festival's winners are enough for the Top 1000.
15 checks are enough for the Top 160; 25 for the Top 50.
Again, there are 89 titles in the list. Even from the last two decades, many films remain below 70 checks.
Cannes this ain't.

The hardest official lists
It was the truth, vivid and monstrous, that all the while he had waited the wait was itself his portion..
I'm sorry guys but hadn't the Portuguese list Publico list been replaced by other more updated list? I can swear that happened but now I see the same list as official in ICM.
There is a movie in thar list that only shows in a Lisbon gallery god knows when, it would be really nice to get rid of that one as official.

The Portuguese list that replaced the Publico list was reduced to 12 titles at the insistence of the publishers in October 2021 so the old list was brought back.TiRex wrote: ↑January 1st, 2023, 8:41 am I'm sorry guys but hadn't the Portuguese list Publico list been replaced by other more updated list? Thanks gunnar. gotta be one of the weakest lists on the site, too. most of the films were voted in by 1 person. only 10 people were polled. and most of those were not film industry.TiRex wrote: ↑January 1st, 2023, 2:58 pmThanks gunnar. Finally got Bronze on the mini series list. I think that is the toughest iMDB list.

Totally agree. There is even an architect among the group of 10 that voted lol. I quickly searched online for Portuguese polls but found nothing relevant besides the one that turned unofficial. I'm really intrigued by how that happened, did they reach the site admins? Wtf!!Tasselfoot wrote: ↑January 1st, 2023, 3:33 pmgotta be one of the weakest lists on the site, too. most of the films were voted in by 1 person. only 10 people were polled. and most of those were not film industry.
The movie is Momentos na Vida de um Poeta (https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/mom ... +um+poeta/). It is a short movie of Mario Cesariny (by Carlos Calvet), a Portuguese painter and poet, the symbol of the Portuguese surrealism movement wandering in Lisbon. According to my research, it can be seen sometimes in the Perve gallery (https://www.pervegaleria.eu/home/index.php) in Marvila, whenever they dedicate some exposition to the Portuguese surrealism movement.
I also just found it here (https://cinevideoart.up.pt/Detail/objects/24). I contacted the developers to check if the movie is available anywhere.
I looked at this the other day. How long is it official, since 2020? (Going by the last update)
- 1 check - which can include one of the short films on the list - is granting you almost a Top 500 ranking.
- 2 checks: ~300
- 3 checks: ~200
- 4: 150
- 6 checks: #96. You are literally a Top 100 user for this list
- 10 checks: #54. This number of films would be the amount of Brockas on the list. Then you're basically ready for the Top 50.
- 13 checks: #32
- 15 checks: #26
- After that, it gets tougher for the Top 20, which you can enter with as many as 20 films seen. You have to pass users such as OldAle to enter the Top 15. These guys are cRaZy for Pinoy films!
13 now!
Not even 40 users have finished 25% out of the 229 films. Top 200 for this list if you watch 10% of it.
Nobody will ever understand how this got adopted at twice the length of the previous list ..

Goes to what I said in another thread about Noirs... the list in concept is fine, but it's far too long for the subject it covers.
The continent of South America has more films on its 2010s decade list than the one, real Japanese list we have for all of film history .. let that sink in!
(Yes there's also samurai and anime and the national award and the big Asian list, I know)
(Still LA-2010s tooo long compared to the rest of the overall selection)

Cinema Tropical's Best Latin American Films 2000 to 2009 was a challenge to get bronze on years ago. I'm inching towards gold now but harder to find the films with subs or at all. I must say that list has had some of the most moving films that have stuck with me.
The 2010 to 2019 is also a struggle to find films for. I'm 18 films away from bronze and ranked #18

While relatively seeming one of the easiest lists to complete, the last bits of the Filmtotaal list are such a chore. With Lawrence of Arabia, i just saw the second longest film i've ever seen discounting miniseries and there are still two longer films on the list: Once upon a Time in America and La meglio gioventù. And for the last one you really need to get out of your way to get the platinum and watch a 7 hour Italian film most people never heard of.
Also, I've noticed that in dutch film circles of the 00's they were films that were commonly named in best of all lists but that they've kinda left the conversation nowadays. Garden State is also a good example of such a film. Into the Wild (which is IMO a bad film), The Fountain, Batman Begins, V for Vendetta are other such examples, though some of those probably were recency bias at the time. And yes, I guess there was some herding on the dutch 00's internet as well, like basically everywhere.
For a list that sells itself as easy to complete, i would argue it is not.

well you either passively watched all those 00s blockbusters throughout your life on cable or sitting on a friend’s couch or you didn’t. I don’t have much interest in the 15 or so I have left either

I mean... it's only 100 films long. And the most obscure film on the list has 3000+ checks (although it 6 hours long). Those 2 factors is what makes it easy to complete.
Once upon a time in America is a milestone of cinema, it is on 19 official lists. Hardly a confidential title no one has heard about...
And La meglio gioventù is on 11 official lists (including our website's most favorited films), also not really a difficult film, however long it may be.
You are naturally free to like or dislike a film, but these are movies that carry a big weight in cinema history, and as such movies anyone interested in cinema history will have to deal with someday (Lawrence of Arabia even more so), which is probably why the list is considered as easy to complete.

Well, some people aren't fond of "dealing with films" for their hobby, certainly not the longer ones. It doesn't help one single bit to them that La Meglio Gioventu is on 11 official lists, it's still an absolute drag to get through.cinephage wrote: ↑May 31st, 2023, 3:09 pm Once upon a time in America is a milestone of cinema, it is on 19 official lists. Apart from actual feasibility (is every film findable with appropriate subs), the definition of "hard" in this context is really all about "how much am I looking forward to watching the films on this list".
