Country Poll: Argentina [LAST CALL]

#1

Post by Fergenaprido »

Overview of the Project
Schedule

Google Sheet

May 2023: Argentina

Rules
* You may vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 titles.
* Feature films, documentaries, shorts, made-for-tv movies, direct-to-video movies, TV mini-series, and TV episodes from anthology series are all eligible.
* One country per film - IMDB is used as a guideline, but Fergenaprido will be the final arbiter for uncertain cases.
* All ballots are considered ranked unless otherwise stated.
* You must include a list of bare imdb URLs along with your ballot (preferably within a spoiler tag), otherwise your ballot will be disqualified.

Scoring
For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive the number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each successive title receiving one point less.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means #1 has 20 points, #2 has 19 points, and #20 has 1 point; a list with 5 titles means #1 has 5 points, #2 has 4 points, and #5 has 1 point.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted it the ballot had been ranked.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means each title would receive 10.5 points; a list with 5 titles means each title would receive 3 points.

Resources:
Argentinian films sorted by number of votes*
Argentinian films sorted by your rating on imdb*
Wikipedia article on Cinema of Argentina
*due to imdb allowing films to be attributed to more than one country, many titles in this filter may be ineligible for this poll if Argentina is not the primary country of production. Decisions about uncertain films will be listed in the second post of this thread.

Many thanks to Rufus-T & gromit82 for the framework from the Year by Year polls, and to maxwelldeux for the Excel template.

I've got another half dozen films lined up for this month, so perhaps a few changes by the end, but this is already one of my more solid ballots. None of the films I saw were better than these 20, so ballot remains the same.

Here's is a Latin country whose filmography I'd like to explore in more depth, sadly not an easy task due to the poor availability of Argentinian classics. This is a good occasion anyway to recommend for that purpose Top 100 from Argentina 1933-1999 over the already official Argentina-related ICM lists.

16. Últimos días de la víctima (Adolfo Aristarain, 1982)
17. Rosaura a las 10 (Mario Soffici, 1958)
18. Las aguas bajan turbias (Hugo del Carril, 1952)
19. El lado oscuro del corazón (Eliseo Subiela, 1992)
20. El camino de San Diego (Carlos Sorín, 2006)

Haha, oh I don't mean to post first as a competition, but rather I've started posting my lists first the last few polls, instead of waiting until the end.

blocho wrote: May 6th, 2023, 9:29 pm Could I have eligibility rulings on the following?
The Secret in Their Eyes - Argentina/Spain - eligible
The Motorcycle Diaries - didn't realize so many companies were involved in production, and no one company seems to take precedence from what I can tell. It was considered as Argentinian by a couple of awards ceremonies/critics awards, so I'm going to stick with calling it an Argentinian film and consider it eligible for this poll.
A Place in the World - Argentina, as the Oscars famously discovered - eligible
Wild Tales - Argentina/Spain - eligible
Carancho - primarily Argentina - eligible
Garage Olimpo - Italy/France/Argentina - eligible
A Twelve-Year Night - Uruguay/Spain/Argentina/France - not eligible

I've watched a lot of Argentinian films in the past couple of months and it's been great exploring what the country has to offer. I've discovered many great films and have a top twenty that I am very happy with, whereas at the start of the year it probably wouldn't have been much more than a top 10. I'm a little disappointed to see that Azor is ineligible as it's an excellent film and was high up my list but maybe it will be eligible for the Switzerland poll when we get round to it? On the plus side, I had discounted The Motorcyle Diaries as being an international production so I can now include that in my list. Thanks for your work on this Ferg and I'll be looking forward to the results as always.

1. The Secret in Their Eyes
2. La Antena
3. Extraordinary Stories
4. The Bitter Stems
5. The Hand in the Trap
6. El Dependiente
7. 4x4
8. Wild Tales
9. Rosaura a las 10
10. Intimate Stories
11. If I Should Die Before I Wake
12. Nine Queens
13. El Critico
14. Bombon
15. End of The Century
16. Yo Adolescente
17. The Motorcycle Diaries
18. Rebellion In Patagonia
19. The Floods
20. Nocturna: Side A

Backups if required:

21. The Funeral Home
22. The Official Story
23. Hardly a Criminal
24. Terrified
25. Leonera

Spoiler

shout-out to a few very close runners-up. all with a 4-star rating (could be used as back up if needed)

El Viaje (1992)
Zama (2017)
Errante Corazón (2021)
Habeas Corpus (1986)
Kékszakállú (2016)
Favula (2014)
El Perro Que No Calla (2021)
Mamá, Mamá, Mamá (2020)
La Mujer de los Perros (2015)
Hierba (2016)

NB1 I've excluded Con el Viento (2018) because the director seems to be Spanish, but if somebody else nominates it (highly unlikely as it is little seen) and it is deemed elligible, then it will end up very high upon my list too! ;)

NB2 I need to see a lot more by Leonardo Favio (which I had planned to do this year, so this polls just comes slightly too soon for me), I suspect he might be one of my favorite Argentine directors in the end, from what I've read about the movies...

Join the World Cup, submit your darlings and those films would likely grab a chance to become mafia films, too.

As an old-fashioned cinephile I prefer that one to the new ranking. Taking into account my top 20: 15/16 make the first list but only 11/20 make the second one.

Pretty much the same for me: 14/15 vs 12/20. Personal preferences aside, my impression is —correct me if I'm wrong— that, in many regards, the cinema of Argentina has stayed more or less at a similar level along the time, unlike other countries where some past (or recent) decades are clearly superior to the rest.

Except in certain periods due (mostly) to political reasons. However it is one of the largest film industries in the world without a proper film archive.

Honestly sometimes this place, and you in particular sol, amaze me. I understand I have unique tastes and a lot of the movies I bring to the various challenges thinking they are good don't get very good reactions yet all of a sudden I will find you (in most cases, though there are a few others, flavo5000 and filmbantha are two others that do tend to like things that I do in some ways) just seem to love something that I thought is just me. I didn't even think anyone would have this on their radar let alone have watched it.

It seems that I watched that one for the 2021 Argentina/Brazil Challenge. I can't remember how exactly it came to be on my radar, but I suspect that it was streaming on Mubi at the time.

If you get a chance I recommend La Tutora (2016) I think it will work well for you but I figure with DtC it would be a future watch too late for inclusion here.

Yeah, I don't plan to watch anything in the final few days of May that isn't eligible for one of the three Challenges. Maybe remind me next time an eligible challenge comes along. :)

Given that you live at the beginning of the day, you could probably watch it in June and still have time to edit your ballot before I get around to calculating the lists on the 1st in my time zone.

Do note, for everyone, that since I'm hosting the Queer challenge this year and I usually go all in for that, I'll be calculating the results rather quickly after the deadline (within 12 hours) so that I can switch focus right away, which means don't expect any extensions (unless I screw something up in the calculations  ).

Argentina is a country where I have a limited but very good sample. Probably the strongest top 5 I'd submit for any country with only 16 films on IMDB (including co productions).

1. Relatos salvajes - Wild Tales (Damian Szifron, 2014)
2. El secreto de sus ojos - The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella, 2009)
3. Argentina, 1985 (Santiago Mitre, 2022)
4. El ciudadano ilustre - The Distinguished Citizen (Cohn/Duprat, 2016)
5. Los tallos amargos - The Bitter Stems (Fernando Ayala, 1956)
6. Silvia Prieto (Martin Rejtman, 1999)
Spoiler
Three other films with Argentina tags on IMDB would appear on my ballot if eligible: Elite Squad (Jose Padilha, 2007), Embrace of the Serpent (Ciro Guerra, 2015) and Monos (Alejandro Landes, 2019). However, I'm assuming all three will appear in other country polls.
