This is blessed by some impressive foggy shots at night and there are some memorable moments as one of the main characters has to have a finger cut off and as they become worried about being pursued at a distance while making their way upstream. For the most part though, the film plays out as an odd hangout comedy: non-urgently paced and full of shots of the men sitting around and drinking, singing about how much they love whisky and talking about the Native Americans who they hope to trade with. And clocking in at over two hours and full of narration that spells things out, it was a bit much for me.
1. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) #1900
I decided to watch another John Huston, this is the other one that is pretty high in the favorite films rankings, and in my opinion, a slightly better one. I expected to watch a western but it's in its core more an adventure film. And as a kid i've seen parts of The African Queen, so Huston probably is in particularly well known for those older adventure type of films. It's solid, and i'm glad to see a film with gold fever and greed as its themes. I wasn't completely blown away but it's a good and solid film.
Set in 1925 according to the wiki.

There are some amazing widescreen long shots here but Gregory Peck's performance is what really makes the film click with his non-dialogue scenes coming off best as his body posture and facial expressions often convey all; there are some great moments of him simply standing hunched over deep in thought (see above). The romance between Peck and his bride-to-be feels a bit weird as she turns against him incredibly quickly. The film really resonates though as a tale of a man who does not want to blindly please others and who values peace more than machismo; a very appropriate western for the Cold War era.

My DVD front cover actually looks quite similar to that shot, so that's perhaps where the inspiration came from, but definitely agree that the screenshot works well as an epitome shot for the movie. For what it's worth, this is one of those films that I had been putting off for ages due to the massive length, but the minutes really flew by.

16. The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972, John Huston) FTV
An amusing comedy western from John Huston.

68-80 - Gunsmoke Season 1 (1955) - Marshal Matt Dillon takes care of the law in Dodge City, Kansas. This is my first time watching the show and I enjoyed it. It's a pretty good show and I liked it more as it went along and I became familiar with the main cast. I imagine that I'll get back and watch season 2 eventually. I'm curious how different the show became after it went to a full hour in season 7.

16. Four Guns to the Border (1954)
A decent Rory Calhoun Western, but also a bit rote and bland. The most memorable thing about it is how determined the filmmakers are to get Colleen Miller’s shirt wet. It happens three times in the first hour of the movie. Some decent photography though.

17. Station West (1948)
A Western noir, with Dick Powell as an undercover US army investigator trying to figure out a gold-thieving scheme out West. This one is a bit of a mixed bag. The supporting characters, Burl Ives aside, are never fully developed or that interesting. There’s a lot of space in Westerns and noir for colorful goons, but that space is not explored here. The romantic subplot is perfunctory even by the standards of noir. And there are a few too many plot holes. But the main appeal is seeing Powell provide his signature tough guy wisecracking and banter. For me at least, that makes this movie fun and worthwhile.

A western influenced by Sergio Leone, directed by the guy behind the Evil Dead trilogy, and just as awesome as that sounds, this cinematic rollercoaster revolves around a mysterious woman entering a gun-fighting competition in a town run by a corrupt self-appointed lawman. Every fight is breathtaking with Sam Raimi not only utilising spaghetti western zooms-in but also adding an angular element to the mix with his camera spinning around as it zooms in. There are some amazing rapid-fire edits too, a handful of insane spinning vertigo shots, as well as typically Raimi high doses of blood and gore.

03. Destry Rides Again (1939) - Kern County - Rating: 6/10
The town drunk (Charles Winninger) becomes the new sheriff of the corrupt town of Bottleneck; but to everyone's surprise, he takes the job diligently, and tightens down on lawlessness, along with the help of the son of his former lawman friend - Destry (James Stewart). Stewart eases into the deputy role, by hiding his abilities, and is immediately accepted as a non-threat presence to the evil forces at the saloon - as he orders a milk, and is handed a bucket and mop to keep him busy. He also doesn't carry a gun, which is perhaps his most noteworthy feature; he of course proves he can shoot exceptionally well, but finds himself to be in a safer position if not armed, which makes him less of a worry to the baddies - having an unarmed lawman. Stewart portrays an interesting role here - clearly siding himself with justice / fairness / the law, yet he often seems to be walking a delicate balancing act of playing to both sides, yes to alleviate suspicion, but to also allow himself to probe further into a case, without seeming too nosey. For there's safety in being an embarrassment, of not being taken seriously - that people can disregard you as a potential threat, and just conclude that you're either in their pocket, or that you're so much of a pipsqueak - with elements of queer coding here - of being poncy: someone who doesn't drink, fight, or shoot (how lavender of him!). That he'll never stand up to the illegal shenanigans going on here, thus nobody ever really values him as an adversary. This all works to Stewart's advantage as law enforcement, as the majority of the runtime, he's never playing a traditional Western lawman (usually a god incarnate), so everyone feels comfortable opening up to him, because they never expect him to actually come collecting on debts of justice. This is also rather similar to the presence of the drunk turned sheriff - who was only given the job because nobody ever thought he'd actually perform the role. Winninger + Stewart are also joined by this comic relief Russian dude - who is similarly considered such a non-threat to anyone in the film, because he's doing stuff like losing his pants in a bet. This trio ultimately are derided by both sides of the scale of justice - for either doing too much or not enough - thus others are either starting to become worried about them, or the flipside: wanting to take matters into their own hands - having given up on the law. Anyway, I enjoyed this kind of / sort of antithesis to Western lore with the three lawmen all underplayed, against the trope of stoic faultless hero. Instead we get three men who have a long way to go to prove their value to the community, by essentially playing dumb the whole film, and it's little wonder that the standby citizens of Bottleneck might decide to settle justice on their own terms, as who has the ability to play the long-game that Stewart and Co are devising when you want swift equity now.

18. Go West (1925) #1900
Buster Keaton goes West and gets work at a ranch, whereupon many pratfalls ensue. It’s pretty fun.
19. Santa Fe Trail (1940)
Just as Young Sherlock Holmes and Young Indiana Jones showcased the adventures of their young heroes, displaying the qualities that made their adult versions into popular characters, Santa Fe Trail does the same for a bunch of future Civil War Generals: George Custer (Ronald Reagan), Jeb Stuart (Errol Flynn), Philip Sheridan, George Pickett, and James Longstreet. We see them graduate from West Point together and then serve in Bloody Kansas together, working to protect the titular trail. This is obviously historical bunk. These officers’ antebellum military service did not have such a neat chronology that they all graduated and served together. Would that this was the only historical error here. Just as nonsensical but far more aggravating is the political history, which advances the Lost Cause myth that the Civil War was the fault of abolitionists. And that Bleeding Kansas was also the fault of abolitionists, John Brown chief among them. Speaking of Lost Cause myths, this movie also has some freed slaves who would just love to go back to slavery because that’s a better life. My sense of nausea kicked in at that point.

A western comedy that could have used a little more plot or a lot more comedy. Burt Reynolds, Ossie Davis and Clint Walker have a nice, easygoing camaraderie, but Angie Dickinson is primarily decorative, not getting much of a chance to show what she can do.

Not as good as the first one, but both Django movies were childhood favorites and I still enjoy this one.

10. In the Land of the Head Hunters (1914) * 63 min.
I wasn't aware that photographer Edward S. Curtis had made a few movies as well as well as photographing Indians. The plot is typical of westerns of the period, with a romantic rivalry leading to war between villages among the Kwakwaka'wakw people of British Columbia, but the Kwakwaka'wakw have used the movie as a source for preserving their culture since it documents their dance and some other aspects of their culture.

Promoted as a horror film about a "monster [who] rampages through the old west", the antagonist of this low budget western is disappointingly human, but the film is certainly more brutal and violent than telepic par. This is unfortunately one of those films though in which the bad guy is a lot more dynamic than the interchangeable good ones. Wearing a bandana as a makeshift eye-patch (see above) and constantly laughing, he is fairly fearsome and his motivations are interesting, constantly complaining about his female victims asking not to be hurt when women can be so quick to hurt men emotionally.
And yes, that's right: I actually managed to check a western that PUNQ hadn't seen.

14. Sergeant Rutledge (1960)

Revolving around the court martial of a black cavalry sergeant, this unusual John Ford western is engaging at first with the reasons why the sergeant is on trial (and the evidence against him) only slowly emerging in bits and pieces. Things become very melodramatic in the final few minutes though (including physical assault!) and there is excessive pontificating, but the performances are solid with a special shout-out to Woody Strode who never loses his dignity.

21. In Pursuit of Honor (1995) #1900
The very first line of dialogue in this movie is: “Pay the bonus now.” Anyone familiar with American history knows what that’s a reference to. In the first scene, we see that this HBO movie’s central theme is the tension between individual conscience and a soldier’s duty to obey orders. Most of the narrative is set in the period a few years after the Bonus Army was crushed and a few years before a war that stretched individual conscience more than any other. But the story here is about neither of those events. Instead, it’s about horses. Should the Unites States Army maintain cavalry units? And if not, what should happen to the horses? How much anyone enjoys this movie depends on the extent to which they find those questions a worthy exploration of the central theme.

It sounds like fun as a zombie apocalypse breaks out in the Wild West here with everybody unable to grasp what is going on. There are indeed some funny moments as the zombies are mistaken for lepers etc.; for the most part though, the film does not milk everyone's confusion for all that it is worth, while the comedy is mostly reserved for the side characters (a bank teller thinking that a zombie is a very persistent late customer). The main characters are actually pretty dull and the zombies feel extremely generic with lots of slow-moving attack scenes that feel like they could have been a part of any film.

21. Sky High (1922, Lynn Reynolds) FTV #1900
The Grand Canyon is the real star here but Tom Mix is solid in his supporting role. Great aerial stunt over the canyon.

Left to her own devices while her mother is at work, a young girl dresses like a cowboy and passes the time solving small-scale mysteries in this fun family oriented comedy. The stakes never feel especially high and the fantasy content introduced towards the end feels a bit off, but Mary Blair brings such energy and charisma to the lead role that she is absolutely captivating to follow around. She is always full of quick wit and frequently talks with the maturity of someone twice her age. Her back-story is pretty interesting too, modelling herself on a deceased lawman father who died in service.
Finishing with two osterns!,

Since I never got started on the 1951 stuff, I ran out of films, so this ended-up being the only western related stuff I watched the last 3rd of the challenge.
104-109. Joe Pickett (2021) - Season 1 [******] - 518min
--- I originally gave up on this after one and a half episodes, but decided to give it a second try. And I'm glad I did, for it picked at around episode 4 and became a entertaining wilderness drama.
110. The Warrant: Breaker's Law (2023, Brent Christy) [***]
--- Neal McDonough does westerns, a follow-up to The Warrant (2020), which was a extremely generic film in the genre. This one doesn't change any of that, but you can have a fun time with the corny and unoriginal tough guy lines McDonough is forced to spews out of his mouth.

Thanks once again for hosting, blocho. My challenge tailed off a little over the last 10 days or so - mostly due to running low on westerns that I'd recorded and having rather more DtC titles to pick from on my TV planner. Still though, I found it to be a wonderfully rewarding adventure once again!

I'm not sure I'd use such a descriptor though. For me, Sherman's film stands as an essential entry. It proves incredibly striking and resonant in its treatment of the forces that collide in this setting. There is a dignity and a profundity to movements, actions, interactions, the capturing of bodies (collective, individual, oppositional, allied) in the land that the American Indians are being pushed from little by little. The melancholia, the pride and the sharp air of historical inevitability really comes through in the open-air wide shots of gathered men on horseback. It also has colour to go with the weighty issues. De Carlo adds verve as she always does, Heflin is complex and emotionally scarred as the scout with a foot in both camps, the US army really doesn't come across well. It was certainly a highlight of a film to bring the curtain down on my challenge.

That's all, folks!
Yes, you clearly liked it more than me. I more appreciated Tomahawk for its surprising historical accuracy of a mostly forgotten event. Always good to end the challenge with a highlight.RogerTheMovieManiac88 wrote: ↑Yesterday, 5:21 pm Who can forget ''cromulent'', heehee...

Thanks blocho for hosting as always! As far as highlights this month, Rustler's Rhapsody was pretty funny. The Man from the Alamo with Glen Ford was a solid one. Surprisingly those three TNT Originals with Tom Selleck were actually pretty good. Selleck (who also produced all of them) seems to have a genuine affection for the genre. The Fred MacMurray westerns I watched (Quantez and Gun for a Coward) were also pretty solid. The Good Old Boys that Tommy Lee Jones directed and starred in was another good one, a more languidly paced movie in comparison to some of the others I watched. Deadlock was a cool modern German western and season 2 of Deadwood had a lot of great stuff in it too.
On the opposite side of things, out of all the cheap B-movie junk from the '30s I watched, I have to say Fighting with Kit Carson is easily the WORST, cheapest, most stilted serial I have ever seen... Impressively so almost. Anyway, it was fun!
