10. The Magnificent Seven (2016)
For those who have seen the original, this is a pallid imitation. There isn’t a scene here to equal the excitement of Yul Brynner’s and Steve McQueen’s ride up to the cemetery, nor a character that can equal their charisma. For those who haven’t seen the original, this is a milquetoast Western, long on action and short on everything else, the sort of movie where nearly every bullet fired is followed by gun twirling.

11. Western Union (1941)
I’ve seen a few railroad expansion movies where a band of plucky Western heroes work together against Indians and other foes to lay tracks. This is just like those only with telegraph wire instead of rails. It’s definitely an “A” Western for this era, with some gorgeous scenery shot in bright Technicolor and a few expensive-looking set pieces, notably a conflagration scene near the end. As with Unconquered, there’s a ridiculous scene that involves the protagonists bamboozling some Indians with modern technology (torturing them with electric shocks in this case). Despite a limp romantic subplot, it’s an entertaining enough movie.

I said pretty much the same thing when I watched it last year for the challenge. It's tied with Comanche Station as my favorite. Now I want to add a couple of Boetticher/Scott films to my watchlist...

I like this one a bit more than I did Comanche Station, but I'm looking forward to 'The Tall T' now. I seem to be watching them in reverse though.

This becomes reasonably exciting in its final third as the protagonist is chased and pursued; the first hour though is a mixed bag. I thought that Lew Ayres made for a dull lead and his romancing of the wife of a man he killed struck me as a bit absurd. The idea of solving the framing of a man you unjustly killed (and whether or not that equates to justice) is a promising idea and it is strange that a director as talented as John Sturges wasn't able to make more of it.

5. Two Rode Together (1961): 5/10

The comedy elements of this late John Ford western didn't really work for me. The theme of white peeps captured by Comanches was an interesting one though.
Seen
1. The Mississippi Gambler (1953)
2. Billy the Kid Versus Dracula (1966)
3. Blazing Saddles (1974)
4. The Good Bad-Man (1916)

5. The Mercenary (1968) * 106 min.  #1900
A Polish mercenary (Franco Nero) aids a peasant bandit/revolutionary (Tony Musante) during the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920). Wild, fun performances by the leads, supported by beautiful Giovanna Ralli as a cynical woman who joins them and Jack Palance as their extremely violent nemesis.

I wasn't planning on participating in this challenge, but it just so happens that several of the films I've watched line-up as Westerns as well! So, I might as well enter this challenge. I'm just hoping to NOT be last place... so, we'll see how this goes!

Image

01. Rango (2011) - Nevada - Rating: 5/10 - Bonus Challenge #1 -- 1830/1900
A chameleon (Rango), accidentally falls out of his owner's car, out onto a highway, where he then meets up with the denizens of the town of Dirt - who are on the verge of a water / drought crisis. Rango has a flair for the theatrical (having put on plays with the décor inside his tank), and despite having no actual knowledge or experience in gunslinging or Western lore - he manages to convince the citizens of Dirt of his marksmanship, which causes them to want Rango to protect them. Then, mostly due to a series of flukes that worked out in his favor - he ends up as town sheriff. He's of course eventually exposed as the fraud he is - but after a mystic encounter on the verge of self-annihilation, he decides that its his duty to fill the needs of the residents: for a hero - that he might be a fake, but he's someone the residents can pin their hope to. That he is their last resort, and he must "abandon the self" to fit that role of caretaker god - someone who's infallible and always manages to end up on top; that if he fails, then there's nothing left to protect them, and that's perhaps the quintessential trope of the Western - that you need the help of someone of deity-like proportions to come rescue the people who are always on the verge of destruction. To Rango, all of this western fighting is just another chapter in his theatrics - where he thinks he's the protagonist, and can never be hurt along the way - because he creates whatever reality he wants - as the playwright, thus he can bend existence to whatever form he so chooses; so why fear failure if you're the one writing everyone's destiny? I would like to also mention the secondary character, Beans, who has these "episodes" where she just goes completely frozen: she stares forward, and can have her arms placed in any position without her being conscious of any of these things. This is never really explained other than a throwaway line of it being a "defense mechanism" - but this happens throughout the film - usually in response to stress or an argument - they aren't exactly in situations where being frozen would actually be of any sort of benefit. This is highly reminiscent of catatonia - which is a manifestation of some forms pf schizophrenia, where you're alive and conscious, but no longer present - no longer able to move or respond on your own volition. We see that here - when Rango moves her arms and she has no ability to resist or control her appendages at all. This is a symptom common to some experiences of schizophrenia - which can be triggered similarly due to stress, and it causes one to just be trapped in a sea of hallucinations, so intense that you can no longer respond to cues or the presence of others, as the experience is so overwhelming, that you essentially just shut down completely - unable to understand what's happening around you. So, it's interesting to see that documented in this film by Beans, though the experience is meant in the film to be "for defense" as in the behavior of lizards, but it is an action that is common with schizo illnesses as well, and similarly due to stress in both situations. Anyway, this is a fairly generic western, wedged in the midst of a mildly child-friendly story of cowboys and water wars - it's held together by a plethora of colorful characters, but tries too hard to be the story of Rango as god, vs the notion of the power of the collective. Which is disappointing, to display the citizens of Dirt as altogether helpless until the good man with a gun shows up to put a stop to things - that they are pathetically weak on their own, and just need a hero like Rango to assist them in accomplishing anything and everything, rather than empower these people to help themselves. And whilst I like the notion of Rango is theatrical god come to life, everything ends up being one deus ex machina after another, which grows tiresome.

02. Night of the Lepus (1972) - Arizona - Rating: 9/10 - Bonus Challenge #1 -- 1830/1900
OK, bear with me. So, a plague of normal sized rabbits are eating away at the cattle grazing territory of ranchers, so a scientist makes an experimental formula to prevent them from breeding, but a rabbit gets loose and suddenly there’s a new plague, this time of 20ft tall killer bunnies – who are out to destroy everything in their path. This is played completely straight – that there’s a horrifying swarm of killer rabbits on the loose – who will murder you and everyone you love, and this is supposed to be scary somehow. You could of course use a frightening looking puppet or figure, but no, these are real – flesh and blood adorable little rabbits, who have gotten into some preserves (“blood”), started roaring, and then filmed at a low angle with miniature sets to document their terror. I applaud the actors’ abilities here – to take any of this seriously, as this could have easily been a high-camp film, but no, we’re here to see gory after-shots of dead bodies, dead…. due to bunnies. I’m sorry, but I can’t take any of this seriously, I just laugh the entire time and cheer for the rabbits to destroy everything and everyone.

This said, the film is actually quite progressive for 1972: like the ranchers don’t want to use poison to kill the rabbits, because they not only worry about the livestock ingesting it, but also because of the environmental effect it would have – like poisoning the food chain (birds being specifically mentioned). So they turn to science to find “natural” or at least “humane” ways to deplete the (normal sized) rabbit population, lest they harm native animals and plants – because they’re choosing to not just “cyanide them all.” The film then goes into science mode with control groups and experimental formula – but it's all undone by one girl switching cages around, which is the sort of fatal flaw that all of these labs have: someone swapping cages. Yet I thought the scientific elements here really helped to give a degree of credence here – that they actually went for a technobabble approach, rather than just “it’s radiation, ooOOoooOO.” That they thought to give a shit about native wildlife and the effects of ecological damage in 1972 is rather ahead of its time, and I for one appreciate that they cared enough to treat their ranching and livestock ways in a sustainable and healthy way – and you don’t normally hear this perspective, especially for this film’s age. As the whole “gas ’em and exterminate ’em” is such a horrific perspective – that the “pests” of nature, life, and society deserve to be annihilated for existing, represents the worst in humanity. That they see these “problems” as a means of destruction, separation, and anguish – and that’s the sort of position that’s been obliterating the environment + those in need of help, for millennia – this will to want to just remove and pretend never existed – that they’re better off burning in hell than lifting a finger to bring their salvation.

Anyway – I just adore this film, they tried their absolute best to play everything as a normal, straight horror film – with even the trailer never mentions what the “Lepus” is – just bouncing clearly around that topic. You can make most any animal look scary and horror-acceptable, but I’m sorry – these rabbits are just the most adorable “killer monster” of any film. Every time I see these damn rabbits, I just burst out laughing – seeing their mouths covered in strawberry jam or whatever they used. This is such a hysterical experience, and I applaud everyone’s effort to play this as a serious horror film, but come on, rabbits are the least threatening creature, and using real rabbits hopping around a town just makes me roll on the floor laughing – I can’t get enough of this stuff.

Also: I get the feeling that everyone was harmed in the making of this film.

I am declaring this film a Western - because its about ranchers trying to fight off rabbits from their land - its at its heart a Western film, just with these killer rabbits existing as well. And if that's not good enough, then here's some stuff from Wikipedia, :cowbow:
According to Turner Classic Movies' David Kalat, director Claxton also came from a Western film background. In directing Night of the Lepus, he applied the same techniques used in his other films and declined the use of "standard" horror effects that would have enhanced the atmosphere, such as "canted camera angles, dark shadows, [and] eerie music."

Rory Calhoun was cast as rancher Cole Hilman, whose ranch would be the start of the rabbit explosion. Well known for his Western work, Lepus put him in unfamiliar territory as it was his first science fiction role; however, he found familiarity in the Western film trappings and his role as a rancher.

That's all I had lined-up. Now I'll start doing a search through the years up to 1950 to see if any cowboy films from the years I've covered has turned-up in the last few months. Could be zero or it could be 60+ like I've found in recent years. We'll see. Fingers crossed to check off a few more of those poverty row flicks.

50. Organ Trail (2023, Michael Patrick Jann) [****]
--- It's not Oregon, it's Organ Trail. Which means a more horror driven western. Nicely shot, but I was hoping for a more chilling experience. But considering the state of the modern western, this was above par. Especially with that rather creepy end.

51-79. Yellowstone (2018-2023) [********] - 2,370min
--- Filled with as much macho bullshit it could to be a compelling cold take on a ranchers life. Watched all the episodes available, and will definitely watch the series conclusion when it releases in the fall. Very good TV-series.

80. Firebrands of Arizona (1944, Lesley Selander) [*****]
--- Now, that's a plot twist I never thought I'd see. Evil Smiley!!! Smiley Burnette, one of the most beloved western sidekicks of all time with a evil "twin"! Sure, it becomes a spoof of the old dual roles trope, but it's full of humor, and along with fresh guy Sunset Carson by his side, they take care of business. A fun old western!

81. Bandits of the Badlands (1945, Thomas Carr) [****]
--- Ordinary B-western starring Sunset Carson. Absolutely nothing original, but it's got those things that made those cheap westerns charming. Decent showing from Sunset, even if wasn't exactly bursting with personality.

82. Days of Buffalo Bill (1946, Thomas Carr) [****]
--- And with this I've seen all of Sunset Carson's films from his initial movie career. He would do some appearances in obscure films decades later, but his time as a cowboy star went downhill quick from here. This is the usual B-western. Packs enough action to entertain for an hour, but little that'll stay with you beyond that.

83. Homestead (2023, Ehrland Hollingsworth) [***]
--- Holy shit! It's pro-wrestler "Diamond" Dallas Page doing a western! Peaked when he showed up. However, this living in isolation western got less interesting from there on. With that said, for a 2023 low budget old west picture, it's better than most made today.

An okay western, but I didn't love it in spite of the star-studded cast.

59-62 - Lonesome Dove (1989) (373 minutes) - I think that I watched this when it first aired, but I didn't remember much about it. The acting is pretty solid throughout. I thought the first episode was a bit dull, but I got hooked during the second episode. The middle two episodes were the strongest and it petered out a bit toward the end. Still, a very good series.

6. The Specialists (1969) * 104 min.
A revenge western starring French rock star Johnny Hallyday, who looks good in the role and his acting is okay, but is terrible in the big barroom brawl. Director Sergio Corbucci is normally very good at staging and editing such fights, but Hallyday repeatedly misses his opponents by a lot, despite the sound indicating that his punches are connecting. The plot seems a little more like a mystery than a western, since despite the fact that everyone knows who did it, finding out exactly how it happened is a major focus of the story. The movie is visually impressive and has amazing mountain scenery.

As per the title, this curious western follows a young gunslinger who agrees to be branded with a birthmark tattoo as part of an elaborate scheme to fleece a wealthy family. It is an intriguing premise with lead actor Alan Ladd constantly denying that he ever possibly be the clan's long-lost son while nevertheless sporting the same apparent birthmark and relaying information (told to him by his co-collaborators) that only the son would possibly know. Things soon get even more dynamic as Ladd discovers why his collaborators know so much about the lost boy. Rich colour photography too, though I preferred the first half.

14. In Old Arizona (1928, Irving Cummings) FTV

In spite of its dated exaggerated acting and pace, I enjoyed this first western talkie. Warner Baxter is rather charming in the lead and Dorothy Burgess is good as his gold digging gal. Enjoyable despite its faults.

84. The Gay Buckaroo (1931, Phil Rosen) [****]
--- Renamed The Frontier Buckaroo for a modern audience so not create false expectations. This is a Hoot. A Hoot Gibson western, that is. He plays a shabby rancher, but teaches the local folks a lesson while also taking care of the crooked gambler in town. Fairly fun for a cheapy. Hoot definitely made worse westerns than this.

85. Flying Lariats (1931, Alan James & David Kirkland) [**]
--- This sure was some patchwork, with God awful acting to boot. One of those early talkie westerns that's fun to watch because everything so damn terrible. Didn't seem like they took it too serious either, so that became part of the fun. Still a total bomb as a movie, and a wonder that Hal Taliaferro (aka Wally Wales) managed to stay in Hollywood for another two decades after this debacle.

86. Law of the North (1932, Harry L. Fraser) [***]
--- Not the lowest of lows, but the climax was flat. At least some of the build-up was halfway enjoyable, and Bill Cody perhaps looked better than usual. Hard to tell, because Cody was never a big personality on screen. I just feel I've seen more cringy performances from him before.

87. The Boiling Point (1932, George Melford) [****]
--- Hoot Gibson films are for the most part cozy and funny. A little bit different than the average B-western. They are still low budget and small experiences, but they provide entertainment for the hour they last. Here they even got room for a small role for Hattie McDaniel and pre-beard George 'Gabby' Hayes, while Hoot tries not to fool for rival Wheeler Oakman's tricks. It makes the most out of a small plot.

88. The Cheyenne Kid (1933, Robert F. Hill) [***]
--- Tom Keene was a handsome cowboy, but RKO rarely handed him much of a budget for his westerns to make him look good. Roscoe Ates adds a few laughs, but for me there wasn't many thrills to The Cheyenne Kid (1933).

89. Trailing North (1933, John P. McCarthy) [***]
--- This snowy Bob Steele vehicle felt more like a dramatic western than a action based one, which was not what these poverty row productions was finetuned for. Slow and lifeless acting, but the winter landscapes did help with the overall feel of Trailing North (1933). Not often one saw these little pictures take the time to film in the snow.

90. Border Guns (1934, Jack Nelson) [***]
--- Bill Cody westerns are often very broad and corny, and probable aimed at kids. Border Guns (1934) is like that. Really bad, but in a way that makes some of it fun.

91. Western Racketeers (1934, Robert J. Horner) [**]
--- Bill Cody comes off as a real goofball in these one-take westerns. Humorous is one way, but it's worse than most bad attempts I've seen. At least it's not bad AND boring, for the amateur approach does bring life to it.

92. The Cyclone Ranger (1935, Robert F. Hill) [***]
--- Another cheesy Bill Cody poverty row western. The most outrageous thing about this one was having Earle Hodgins as a Mexican! I haven't laughed this hard at a miscast since they did the same to Lafe McKee!

93-95. The Roaring West (1935, Ray Taylor) [****] - Serial: 280min
--- An alright Buck Jones serial. But with 15-episodes it becomes too long even if they go through most of the true and tested western tropes. The problem is that they take most of the really exciting parts from other productions, and there are too many filler shots, probable stock footage also, which means Bucks workload is probable the same as a one-hour programmer, even if this is a nearly four hour cinema series. With that said, the Buck portions were enjoyable and they kept the energy up.

96. Desert Justice (1936, William Berke) [***]
--- This Jack Perrin cheapy starts out in the city before it takes its action out to the ranch where gangsters are hiding. Perrin was way passed his prime by this point, and soon after his headlining days were over for good. He stayed around in Hollywood doing uncredited bit parts for almost three decades after this. As for Desert Justice (1936). The city stuff was fine. The out west stuff was run-of-the-mill. Bad storytelling in autopilot, while clumsily trying to add some excitement and humor without that doing much to save the picture.

97. Everyman's Law (1936, Albert Ray) [***]
--- During this period Johnny Mack Brown made a lot of unimpressive and boring B-western standards, and Everyman's Law (1936) also falls in that category. The highlight was almost Brown babysitting. That tells you how bland the rest of this stuff was. I mean, it delivers exactly what every other poverty row westerns does, but in a way one always expect better from Johnny Mack Brown.

98. Pals of the Pecos (1941, Lester Orlebeck) [****]
--- Pretty good for a Three Mesquiteers vehicle. Doesn't do anything beyond the usual stuff a B-westerns does, but it does standard stuff well and it becomes enjoyable. This was the Robert Livingston, Bob Steele, Rufe Davis incarnation of the gang, and they all bring a little bit of themselves to make sure Three Mesquiteers remain the king of the Trigger Trios.

99. Texas Justice (1942, Sam Newfield) [****]
--- George Houston's The Lone Rider seeking Texas Justice (1942). Simple cowboy stuff with some hilarious moments like when Al St. John pretending to blow-up his friend and Houston going undercover in the religious cloth. Rough overall production, as it's handled by the infamous hack Sam Newfield, but it's actually one that manages to entertain in a camp-style way.

100. The Lone Rider in Cheyenne (1942, Sam Newfield) [***]
--- Sadly, this Lone Rider picture doesn't have any other hook other than being a average bad western.

101a. The Dentist (2020, Michael Brian Rawlins) [***] - 6min
--- Dental killing out west. Clever tiny tale, even if a little silly.

101b. All Out (1925, Slim Summerville) [*****] - 19min
--- One of my favorite teams in the old silent era is The Ton of Fun. Hilliard Karr, 'Kewpie' Ross & Frank Alexander. Three big fellows doing slapstick like no other. Lot's of fatty joke and bumping around. Here they end up at a ranch and do all their crazy stuff there. A little all over the place, but there definitely are some creative gags for big laughs going on!

101c. Wild Waters (1935, William Berke) [****] - 18min
--- Flash the Dog the action! Dog movies from this time were usually a drag, but this one last less than 20 minutes, and that's the sweet spot for this kind of thing. And with the dam sabotage, there actually was something to get thrilled about.

101d. Adventures of Texas Jack (1934, Victor Adamson) [**] - 16min
--- One of several short westerns Hal Taliaferro did under the name Wally Wales during this period. Too small of a experience to build any excitement, and the production quality and the acting is below par, even by poverty row standards. Just a quick forgettable fix.

101e. The Marshal of Gunsight Pass - S01 - E15 - Shotgun Messenger (1950, Phil Booth & Frank Fox) [***] - 25min
--- The only episodes surviving from the short-lived western TV show The Marshal of Gunsight Pass? Stars former singing movie cowboy Eddie Dean with longtime screen sidekick Roscoe Ates as the comic element. This was shot live, and honestely it's quite clumsy, especially on line delivery. You get a very basic studio western with few thrills, but with The Plainsmen singing a soothing song to add some value to this.

102. Land of the Outlaws (1944, Lambert Hillyer) [***]
--- Another underwhelming Johnny Mack Brown western. The guy had so much personality that these B-westerns should have automatically been a lot more fun, but somehow he usually just slept his way through them and often made them more boring than a small-time screen cowboy would.

103. Ride, Ryder, Ride! (1949, Lewis D. Collins) [***]
--- Jim Bannon's first one as Red Ryder as Eagle-Lion Films rebooted the former Republic Pictures film franchise. In color and all. Sometimes it finds it's adventure mood, but most of the time the cheapness shines through too strongly for it to feel like a upgrade of the old Red Ryder series.

Thanks for the stats update, blocho. B) Wasn't planning to watch many non-DTC westerns this month, but when I heard about this one, I couldn't resist:
Spoiler
1. Angel and the Badman (1947)
2. Hellfire (1949)
3. 3 Bad Men (1926)
4. Lightning Jack (1994)
5. The Pilgrim (1923) REVISION
6. Lemonade Joe (1964)
7. The Capture (1950)
8. Branded (1950)
9. Homestead (2023)

For a film sold as Becky in the Wild West, this does not really hold a candle to that, but it is a curious motion picture all the same. Betsy Sligh is excellent as the female protagonist: an insolent preteen girl taught by her stepfather to be excellent sharpshooter. Her stepfather was once a violent outlaw though and as his former gang members track him down, she gets an earlier-than-expected chance to put her training into action. Promising as this might sound, Sligh does not really get a chance to do much with a gun until the film's second half, while her stepfather is underwritten, but this was decent while lasted.

12. Run of the Arrow (1957)
There are enough similarities here with Dances with Wolves that I wonder whether Run of the Arrow influenced the later movie. This is a Sam Fuller picture, so it’s a bit smarter than the average Western and a bit more unusual in its narrative. If you can get past the poor sound looping, seeing Charles Bronson in reface, Rod Steiger’s bewildering accent, and the weirdness of seeing a story about the Sioux that’s set in the desert Southeast, this movie offers a thoughtful exploration of identity in the postbellum era.

13. Rango (2011) #1900
A fairly typical Western tale of a dude masquerading as a fearless gunman. The twist is that it’s animated and all of the characters are anthropomorphic desert animals. The references to other movies come a bit thick in this one. A scene is copied from Apocalypse Now. The villain here is the same as the villain in Chinatown. And I noted allusions to Once Upon a Time in the West, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Raising Arizona, the Dollars Trilogy, and The Odd Couple. All that aside, I found this delightful. The action scenes are thrilling, and the dialogue is consistently clever and funny.

63 - Decision at Sundown (1957) - 7.5/10 - Randolph Scott stars as Bart Allison. Allison blames Tate Kimbrough for his wife's suicide and has been tracking him down for the past three years. He happens to arrive in the town of Sundown on the day of Kimbrough's wedding. It's another nice collaboration between Boetticher and Scott.

64 - Buchanan Rides Alone (1958) - 8/10 - Randolph Scott stars as Buchanan, a man on his way back home to West Texas who stops in the town of Agry along the way. Unfortunately for him, the town is run by the Agry family and he soon finds himself in jail as an accessory to murder, having his money stolen by the sheriff in the process. I liked this one more than Decision at Sundown. Scott is very good.

14. Hell or High Water (2016) #1900
Seen for the second time, this modern Western is even more impressive. Some of the subtler themes are more evident on second viewing, as is the quality of the script. It is an elegiac Western, full of fatalistic characters who feel their end coming. Even Jeff Bridges’ ranger, for all his bonhomie, carries a desperate loneliness. The story itself is very simple, but the right twang, characters that feel authentic, and high-quality actors create a superb movie.

15. Colorado Territory (1949)
One of the classic Western tropes is the aging gunfighter looking to get away from violence and settle down. And one of the classic noir tropes is the criminal looking for one last big score. These narrative devices merge fruitfully in this noirish Western, which features excellent action scenes and gorgeous location photography at what I thought was Canyon de Chelly, though IMDb claims it is Sedona. Like Hell or High Water, this movie has plenty of fatalism.

6. Junior Bonner (1972): 5/10

This was a curious one. I guess it's Sam Peckinpah's directing style, the editing, or both. Anyway, Steve McQueen showed once more why he was called the King of Cool. Sadly, this film is about rodeo (a rather cruel form of entertainment) and doesn't condemn it in any way.

7. The Big Country (1958) (rewatch): 9/10 (old rating: 9/10)

A feast for the eyes. Stunning cinematography, Burl Ives in top shape (as an actor, not physically :P) and good stunts as well. This remains one of my favorite westerns of all time.

4. The Good Bad-Man (1916)
5. Two Rode Together (1961)
6. Junior Bonner (1972)
7. The Big Country (1958) (rewatch)

65 - Lemonade Joe (1964) - 7.5/10 - A singing cowboy/lemonade salesman only drinks lemonade and he comes to a wild west town with the intention of cleaning it up and eliminating the effects of alcohol. There are a number of fun gags and I liked the visual style with the tinted picture. I thought it dragged a little on occasion later in the film, but is still pretty entertaining.

66 - The Ballad of Little Jo (1993) - 7.5/10 - #Bonus - Josephine Monaghan heads out west and finds that being a woman alone isn't a pleasant prospect so she starts dressing and acting as a man and goes by just Jo instead of Josephine. She gets a job, builds a ranch, and fits in well. I thought this was pretty good.

8. Marshal of Reno (1944) * 53 min.
Red Ryder, based on a comic strip, is the most kid-oriented western movie series that I've seen, usually with more guys getting guns shot out of their hands than getting shot. Marshal of Reno has plenty of fights and shooting, Bill Elliott makes a solid hero, and Gabby Hayes is more restrained than usual. Nothing to raise it above the level of a typical B western, but nothing much to drag it down either.

I snuck one more in tonight.

67 - Westbound (1959) - 7.5/10 - Randolph Scott stars as a Union officer who takes charge of a stagecoach line bringing gold shipments from California. He runs into trouble in one town with Confederate sympathies where a wealthy man is a former acquaintance. This is regarded as one of the weakest of the Boetticher/Scott collaborations, but I enjoyed it and think it is a decent film. I do wonder why gold shipments wouldn't be more heavily guarded, though.
