3. Emesis PussyCake (2021) 5/10 [Argentina]

The picture sol posted here grabbed my attention, but I have to agree with the review of sol. It's nothing special, a regular zombie flick with some sci-fi elements not quite worked out.

Glad I am being read, but yeah, I definitely didn't mean to recommend the film. Kind of sad how much of a generic zombie flick it is given how it starts out as a hard sci-fi tale.

And incidentally, I was drawn to the film based on the various front covers and promotional artwork (e.g. these), which promised a far more stylish and neon-infused film than what we ultimately got.

Image

Fleeing the scene after killing a pedestrian due to inattention, a security guard begins his new job working the night shift at the local morgue where paranormal things soon occur in this low budget horror thriller. It is not hard to guess where everything is heading given the hit-and-run element, but there are some great early moments as he is set on edge by weird sounds and drinks that seem to move on their own with some uncertainty as to whether everything is a result of his guilt and paranoia surfacing. As the film progresses though and we start to see more (with less just implied), things get duller.

Famous for his paperback westerns, a financially troubled author agrees to adapt one of his novels for the screen, but struggles with the absurd demands of his producers and stuck-up hotel staff in this Brazilian comedy. The film references Barton Fink at several points and feels rather similar as whether what we are seeing is real or imagined becomes deliciously ambiguous. And then a Stranger Than Fiction angle ignites as he begins interacting with his own character who insists that he is the one writing about the author! If very interesting thematically, I often wished I had Barton Fink fresher in mind here.

We've reached Day 10 and are about 1/3 of the way through the challenge. As expected, jdidaco has taken over the lead with 20 points. I'm still in second place for the moment, but expect to be passed by sol and airdolll before the next update. The group has 84 points collectively with exactly half of those coming from Argentina. Brazil is moving up fast, though, with 34 points. Paraguay and Uruguay are tied for a distant third with 4 points each.

The Headless Woman has been watched 4 times so far. There are others that have been watched twice, including XXY, Pixote, Bacarau, 7 Boxes, Belmonte, and Pussycake.

3. A Place in the World (1992, Argentina)
A coming-of-age story set in 1980s San Luis, Argentina. Though suitably drenched in nostalgia and burdened by a hackneyed framing device, the movie still offers a compelling portrait of small town Argentine society, providing both interpersonal drama and a view of larger social conflicts.

4. Mars One (2022, Brazil)
The life of a working class family in Belo Horizonte with its attendant dramas: the daughter is moving out to live with her girlfriend, the father is a recovering alcoholic, the son doesn’t want to be a pro soccer player like his dad wants him to be, the mother is dealing with PTSD. It’s a very warm movie with good acting. The only drawback is that some of the narrative turns are a bit too implausible and convenient.

Less interesting than the promotional artwork might make it seem, this Brazilian lockdown drama mostly revolves around one guy's daily routine as he works from home, works out and watches Modern Times endlessly on repeat. Meh. Watching him stare at microwaves (without moving) in lengthy, unbroken shots and so on is just dull. After around 20 minutes, something finally changes as a female neighbour knocks on his door and inspires romantic feelings in him, but it is further quarter-hour before he decides to meet her, and by then it is hard to care. The film takes a slight horror turn towards the end though.

12. Skinned (2021) Brazil
13. Virus:32 (2022) Uruguay

Image

A virus outbreak turns those infected into angry, fast-moving zombies here. The title refers to the zombies bizarrely taking 32 seconds to recover their strength after each attack, something that does not really add much plot-wise, and the film otherwise does nothing that other 28 Days Later imitators have not done before. The majority of the action is nicely confined though to labyrinthine warehouse where our heroine works security. And taking her daughter to work on the fateful outbreak evening, the film at least mounts the occasional great moment of her watching her lost, scared kid on security cameras.

14. In the Quarry (2018) Uruguay

Image

Spending a summer's day at a lakeside quarry with his girlfriend and her male childhood friends, an easily irate man grows increasingly suspicious and jealous of his companions in this slow burn thriller. The central dynamic is pretty interesting with the film constantly toying around with whether or not he has a right to be suspicious. Tension comes and goes though and is never consistent throughout, and with no real escalations until the second half of the movie, the film feels like a bit of a patience test at times as we wait and wait for something to explode - but what a great eerily isolated location!

We're almost at the halfway point in the challenge and jdidaco has extended his lead and is up to 30 films total. sol has taken over second place and I still have a precarious hold on third. 72aicm and peeptoad round out the top 5. Argentina holds a 1 point lead over Brazil with Uruguay and Paraguay far behind in third and fourth.

We've crossed the 100 point threshold collectively and seem destined to finish close to 200 points total.

1. Hermia & Helena (2016) * 86 min. (Argentina)
Well made but it seemed rather slight, not helped by beginning with a minor character, then introducing the main character on her way to New York City and covering her first few months there, and then working backwards through her relationships month by month for three months. The result tends to make her choices seem random, which in turn tends to make the relationships seem trivial.

Brazil has taken a 60-53 lead with 12 days to go. We also have a couple of new participants so welcome to them.

Meanwhile, The Headless Woman is up to 5 views which equals the entire total from Paraguay.

2. Morgue (2019)* 81 min. (Paraguay)
A low budget horror movie that offers nothing new. The unlikable protagonist is established as a jerk from the beginning and goes downhill from there, so it seems like he is getting what he deserves. Not bad, just unsurprising and a somewhat disappointing use of some good sets and a standard setup that has potential for more.

Thanks for the update, gunnar. Of course, Brazil is winning so far because jd is pushing his home country  (Argentina is actually winning if you remove jd's viewings altogether), but yeah Paraguay is predictably coming last either way, even with a second person watching Morgue. I was expecting Uruguay to be far ahead of Paraguay though; maybe something to work on here if I can pull myself away from the other challenges this month. In the meantime:

In between indulging in drunken gay house parties, a single father tries to parent his teenage daughter who suddenly decides that she would rather live with her mother in this Argentine drama. The film does not shy away from showcasing just how crazy the parties are, but there are some moments of pure beauty too, with an especially memorable camera pullback to long distance shot as the protagonist and two other men engage in a passionate threesome by a window, not caring if anybody sees. The messages and ideas at hand are all a little basic, but all of the neon-drenched club scenes really look divine.
