Just had an excellent rewatch of Videograms of a Revolution, as I expected/hoped. The big difference for me was going from appreciating what it was doing, to being fully immersed i both the form and content. I think the idea that the revolution is indeed (partially) televised and indeed captured on amateur and professional cameras, and that what we are seeing is the day by day progression of a merger of this content into a narrative unlike anything seen before is incredible. It combined technical glitches, omitted information/images as we trace cameras from the point of which the dictatorship has the power until after the revolutionaries seizes it - and the angles and who shoots it captures an, if not objective, seemingly neutral/detached eye (of course, there is no such thing).

The techniques on display, often cutting between people filming their TVs and their reactions and the TV footage itself, or between footage of people hiding in their homes or walking on the streets amidst protestors, show events as they occur - often from a distance - and technical limitation of what is shown when and who see what is key. One of the most intruiging early sequences show the last live speech of Nicolae Ceausescu, until people start shouting, and something seems to be happening beyond the view of the camera - before the TV screens in the whole country go black. We then cut to the photage from the TV van with information that they were informed to film the sky if anything out of the orginary happened and we hear the audio around them while simultaneously seeing the error screen for home viewers - then, visuals come back and home, but no audio - we hear it, but not the viewers in real time.

We are experiencing the chaos, and the violence, we get some rather heartbreaking pleas and statements, especially in the opening and closer - but the majority is a collage of images from different angles, and often abstracted. Some of the events, such as interviews/discussions with prisoners, with the revolutionaries beating people bloody out of anger, show the real situation on the ground - and there is incredible footage from inside the TV station as they discuss how to form the narrative and calm the situation. A unique document, and one that is simultaneously an exploration of the event itself, technology/video and indeed cinema, even composition.

Thanks for pointing that out - fixed my ballot above.

And for the sake of consistency, we use IMDB dates, which I clearly failed at. :P

Just wanted to chime in and thank gunnar, gromit82, and OldAle1 (and anyone else) for recommending me 1992 shorts!

I'll of course still try to get to as many as I can of them, but I can only see so many (as I spend like 2+ hours writing each review - which is the part that holds me back from just watching everything (as I've GOT to write a longwinded review for everything). I'll be watching up until the deadline though, as I want to see as many as possible and pad out my list with more quality stuff. :ph43r:

Comment:

A great year for watching movies, for me - Unforgiven reignited a dormant interest in the western, and made me a lifelong Clint Eastwood fan, and this was a year where my burgeoning interest in Iranian and African cinemas really got going. In retrospect, and looking at my lists and ratings, it's as good a year as any overall, but a piss-poor one for Hollywood - only the top film on the list, and a handful of the also-rans are major studio releases. While I do think Hollywood in general has gone downhill since the 70s, this is a remarkably poor year for mainstream output from my standpoint, possibly the worst between the 1960s and COVID. Thankfully some fine indie releases, shorts and experimental work, and a slew of good-to-great films from Canada, Iran, the UK, Mexico, France and other cinematic wonderlands make it a competitive year anyway.
It was the truth, vivid and monstrous, that all the while he had waited the wait was itself his portion..

I'm not so great at <90s cinema, so I apologize for my list being so mediocrely pedestrian. I am eternally glad to the four people who recommended me shorts though - and I think I added at least one film from all of your suggestions. Was going to marathon more of them, but ran out of time (thank NES emulator games). I did end up watching 10 films from 1992 this month, so I consider that a success, given my limitations. But I'm happy with what I saw, and I'm sure the others would be delightful as well. But I'll see all of you in the 1931 poll - and you can suggest more shorts for me there as well!

Ranked

01. Killer Tomatoes Eat France!
02. Tiny Toon Adventures: How I Spent My Vacation
03. Hard Boiled
04. A League of Their Own
05. La course à l'abîme
06. A Sense of History
07. Mom and Dad Save the World
08. FernGully: The Last Rainforest
09. Jídlo
10. Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers
11. Wayne's World
12. You'll Change
13. Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth
14. Strictly Ballroom
15. Aladdin
16. Franz Kafka
17. Porco Rosso
18. Adam
19. It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown
20. The Muppet Christmas Carol

Don't think I'll get to compiling this until tomorrow, so if you want to update your list one last time, this is your opportunity.
