If nowhere near as fun and engaging as the prologue to A Serious Man, this much earlier movie about dybbukim (possessed bodies) is not uninteresting, though it certainly feels very lengthy and dragged out at over two hours long. Tension and atmosphere are in short supply with several dialogue-heavy scenes and elongated prayer sessions, but there are also several striking moments that really stand out. Most notable is an eerie part where a young man spies on a neighbour through a window who (at least according to the subtitles) is summoning Satan (see above). The dissolve-out effects work well too.

06. Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth (1992) - Japan / Indonesia - Rating: 6/10
A meteoroid crashes to Earth, which wakes up Godzilla, but at the same time, a Mothra egg is discovered, and then on top of everything else, Battra (who’s basically a dark version of Mothra) also shows up, alongside the twin fairies, the Cosmos, who act as an in-between for Mothra and humans. Battra exists as the method for the Earth to protect itself, for when humans have caused too much damage to it, thus there’s a heavy environmental theme here, between protestors angry at deforestation around Mt Fuji vs the evil Marutomo Corporation – who want the Cosmos twins as a freakshow / promotion. So, Battra is here once again to destroy everything in their path – as a way to get revenge on humans – which seems a bit self-defeating: destroy humans’ creations because people are hurting an ecosystem – as though those who survive aren’t going to cause more damage on rebuilding than would’ve been done in the first place. It makes for a situation where, to create a cure / rectification, you have inflict major damage in the process, in a sort of slash and burn approach: destroy everything, so that the humans have to restart from scratch, in such a way that they then “respect the Earth.” It does seem like they could’ve gone after the heavy industrial areas, rather than apartment blocks and infrastructure – because what are you going to do, just rebuild an already dense, well-planned urban area with access to public transit? Short of killing every single person, what is destroying everything and forcing people to rebuild going to accomplish in an environmentally minded way? As they don’t seem to go after the wealthy or the strip-mines and strip-malls that do more damage. It’s just going to require everyone use up more resources just so they could regain what they already had. Battra targeting Japan for poor environmental decisions seems misguided (compared to other countries), although Battra could’ve gone after Japan’s fishing industry, if anything. Then: if Battra is the Earth protecting itself, then what’s the point of Mothra – to protect the humans from Battra? This film was not originally a Godzilla movie, and it clearly shows, as he’s much more of a side character, who just appears to cause some additional chaos and destruction – even when the film is trying to focus on Mothra and Battra. Godzilla just even randomly shows up from Mt Fuji – and there’s some explanation that he like swam through the lava to get there? Instead of Godzilla, there’s this focus on this Indiana Jones dude – as he gains a change of heart, so that his daughter could have respect for him, rather than just being a thief – as I guess he’s the bad kind of archaeologist – he even plans to sell the Cosmos twins, just because he’s that sort of asshole. So in the end, this guy must also learn the value of life, culture, and identity – as he needs to also respect the Earth as well as himself. Anyway, despite the clarity of the film’s message of environmental justice and salvation, it still ends up being just another Godzilla film of city destruction. At least here, Mothra uses her magic glitter to make all of the enemies “friendly;” and as anyone who’s been glitter-bombed knows, it too will change your disposition.

A second viewing confirms that this Dracula spoof from Mel Brooks is up to par for him despite a mixed reputation. The vast majority of the puns work, with some especially moments involving dual women under the Count's spell. Every scene with Renfield is also a delight. Peter MacNicol is superb in the role, even outshining Dwight Frye with his weirdness as he scurries about like a wild animal yet talks with eloquence. There is an especially good bit in which he repeatedly eats various insects at breakfast while pretending that it is not happening. Harvey Korman's baffled straight man reactions to this are hilarious.

159 - A Time of Roses (1969) - 6/10 - A filmmaker in 2011 becomes interested in an actress who died in the mid-70s and decides to do a documentary about her. He finds and hires a woman who looks similar to the actress in order to recreate parts of the life of the actress. The film isn't all that interesting in terms of the story or acting, but the costumes and sets hold some interest.

160 - Zazie dans le Métro (1960) - 8.5/10 - Zazie is a wild, foul mouthed 10 year old who spends a couple of days with her uncle in Paris when her mom visits her boyfriend. Zazie wants to spend her time on the metro, but it is closed due to a strike so she and her uncle travel around Paris in other ways. It's a crazy and entertaining film. Bugs Bunny and the Road Runner would be proud of the one chase scene. The visit to the the Eiffel Tower and the trip around Paris were lots of fun.

161 - Kin-Dza-Dza! (1986) - 7.5/10 - A crazy Soviet science fiction comedy about a couple of strangers who look to help a barefoot man, but wind up transported to the distant desert planet Pluke and have to find a way to get back home.

162 - The Seventh Seal (1957) - 8.5/10 - A knight returning from the Crusades plays a game of chess with Death in a bid to extend his life. We see the knight and his squire go on a journey and meet various people during the game. This was a rewatch, but it had been so long since I saw it that I had forgotten much about it. It's very good.

163-172 - 805 minutes of tv shows
Continuum Season 1 (2012) (440 minutes) - In the year 2077, society has come under the thumb of various corporations who are in charge of the government. Freedom fighters access a time machine to travel back to 2071, but end up in 2012 instead along with a police officer who accidentally got taken through time as well. She uses advanced technology that she had with her plus a helper that she acquires in 2012 to join the local police force and try to thwart the terrorist plans. It isn't anything groundbreaking, but it is a pretty good sf police procedural.

Eve Season 1 (2015) (365 minutes) - A scientist goes on the run to keep her project secret. She enlists the help of a colleague to destroy the project, but it turns out to be a humanoid robot named Eve and the colleague's son convinces him to bring Eve home where she soon becomes part of the family. Most episodes revolve around Eve learning to be human, often through some misunderstanding.

29. Antiviral (2012)
The body horror apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, does it? This is a corporate espionage thriller mixed with body horror mixed with social satire of celebrity culture. In each category, the results are inconsistent. While consistently icky and occasionally disturbing, this isn’t a successful movie. With regard to celebrity culture, especially, I think there’s a missed opportunity to dig deeper into this theme. Yes, people are really, really obsessed with celebrities. The sole insight Antiviral brings to the topic is the manner in which celebrity obsession tends towards the bodily. That’s neither an original nor a particularly interesting point. I think a more sophisticated movie would have found it fruitful to explore the topic with regard to spirituality and class.

30. Love and Monsters (2020)
A post-apocalyptic monster comedy that somehow manages to work on a comedic and emotional level and also as an action thriller. Consistently enjoyable.

Alright, it's been awhile. Got sidetracked by other movies.

23. Sonic the Hedgehog (Fowler, 2020). Eh, a chase movie derived from a chase game with some old-school buddy-buddy stuff thrown in. Fantasy
23. Maleficent (Stromberg, 2014). I was hoping that Disney would embrace a telling of the traditional story from the villain's point of view, but of course they had to turn the villain into the actual hero. It's not bad, but I was hoping for more. Fantasy
24. Peter Rabbit (Gluck, 2018). Hmmm... I wanted to like this, but I just didn't buy into the CGI and I didn't much care for any of the characters. Fantasy
Spoiler
1. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (Mitchell, 2019). Fantasy
2. Despicable Me (Coffin & Renaud, 2010). REWATCH Fantasy

173 - Birds, Orphans and Fools (1969) - 5/10 - Three adults (two men and a woman live together in a city affected by war. They act like fools or children much of the time. There were some interesting bits here and there, but I didn't really enjoy their antics or the film itself.

174 - Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) - 7.5/10 - Alien clowns land near a small town and start killing or capturing the residents. It was absurd, but fun.

175 - Miracles of Thursday (1957) - 8/10 - A group of prominent citizens in a small Spanish town that has seen tourism and other visitors decline over the years come up with a scheme to fake an appearance by their patron saint, San Dimas, in order to improve business in town. Their scheme has some minor success, but really gets rolling when a stranger (Richard Basehart) who seems to know all that they have been up to arrives in town.

176 - The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb (1993) - 7/10 - A tiny baby is born to a couple. They adapt and form a happy family until men in black take that boy away to a research lab where he is studied. The lab has a very weird mix of specimens/prisoners. The film is an odd mix of live action and stop motion with insects galore throughout the film.

177 - Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea (1977) - 8.5/10 - Jan is a fairly boring, but successful rocket designer who lives in an apartment with his twin brother Karel, a womanizer who pilots rocket ships which carry tourists on sightseeing tours to the past. When Karel died while eating breakfast, Jan impersonates him and gets caught up in a Nazi time travel conspiracy. The film is pretty funny at times and I thought it was also very entertaining.

178 - Who Wants to Kill Jessie? (1966) - 6.5/10 - A new invention is able to project dreams onto a tv screen. However, it accidentally brings some of those characters to life. I thought it was funny how they spoke using word balloons, but that got a bit old after a while. I liked the last 15-20 minutes or so the best.

This has its strengths for sure, including Boris Karloff's performance, detailed make-up and Karl Freund's penchant for atmospheric camera pans. The film also gets off to a strong start too with the mummy's hand only ever-so-slowly creeping into shot when he first comes back from the dead. This was, however, a real disappointment upon revision (not seen in 5+ years). I had forgotten just how few scenes Karloff has in the scheme of things and the notion of a lovesick ancient Egyptian is never particularly scary or eerie. Freund makes really good use of close-ups (Karloff's eyes!) throughout at least though.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who liked it. I really didn't care for it as a kid, but when I rewatched it a couple years ago, I was amazed at just how good of a parody it is while also being a good action film on its own. Two very different styles of action in there, and they both worked.

I saw it in the theater when it came out and liked it a lot. I watched it again back in 2005 and still enjoyed it. I'll rewatch it again one of these days.

36. Fortress (1992)
All these dystopian prison stories are starting to run together. Yet are eerily topical. Because the prison is run by a corporation for profits and considers all inmates property. There's an escape attempt. It's a little weird. And let's just say that Christopher Lambert did not get snubbed for an Oscar nomination with this performance.

179 - A Scanner Darkly (2006) - 7/10 - Keanu Reeves is an undercover cop who becomes addicted to the dangerous drug that he is investigating. I think the film would have worked better without the animation. The scramble suits might have been hard to do.

180 - Alice in Wonderland (1966) - 6/10 - This is an odd take on the Alice in Wonderland story. I did like the music quite a bit, but I kind of lost interest in the film after the first 15-20 minutes. Fortunately it was short.

181 - The Singing Ringing Tree (1957) - 7/10 - A prince tries to win over a spoiled princess, but she sends him in search of a tree known only in stories and he gets turned into a bear for his troubles. The sets are pretty low budget and the moral is pretty obvious, but I still found myself enjoying the film.

182 - Soylent Green (1973) - 7.5/10 - Charlton Heston stars as a New York police detective who is looking into the murder of a wealthy citizen who was on the board of the Soylent Corporation. The Earth is vastly overpopulated and food is scarce. Soylent makes much of the current food supply. Edward G. Robinson has a nice supporting role in his final film.

183-187 - Falling Skies Season 1 (2011) (410 minutes) - Aliens invaded and killed a huge portion of humanity. Survivors have banded together to survive and fight back. The aliens want the children and install a device to harness and control them after capture. It's a pretty good show.

The first film produced by the Syfy Channel, this telepic revolves around a man who is unable to convince anyone that he is being periodically abducted by aliens. The plot has a lot of E.T. déjà vu as he eventually teams up with a government captured alien to sneak him back to his crashed ship. The whole thing is fairly engaging though for a movie made on a budget with thought-speech, the alien able to mimic human form and some fascinating eventual origins once all is revealed, but budget constraints really shine through with the alien looking like a child ballerina in a rubber suit, because, well, it was.

31. The Devil (1972)
Comments in the 1000<400 challenge.

32. Strange Days (1995)
A gritty conspiracy thriller with a sci-fi touch. Unlike a movie like Predator 2, which takes Los Angeles’ most lurid qualities and exaggerates them 400%, Strange Days feels like a reasonable forecast of 1999 Los Angeles from the perspective of 1995 Los Angeles, a city riven by race and wealth that feels at the forefront of millenial urban excess. This is very much a post-Rodney King movie, in other words. It goes on about 20 minutes too long, but overall this is pretty good. Kudos, by the way, to Ralph Fiennes. He’s not the first guy I would have picked to play a sleazy ex-cop hustler, but he’s quite convincing.

Agreed about the forecast of 1999 LA - I thought it was an interesting exploration of that time period, and even almost as relevant today.

I'm still mulling over the movie. There are some deeper themes that I'm only thinking about after further reflection. That the narrative takes place over the final two days of the twentieth century gives it both a millennial and a millenarian quality. Several times, different characters refer to "the end of the world." There's an explicit suggestion this is related to racial strife but also, I think, an implicit indication that this means the replacement of the physical world with the digital world. The tension between the two is an ongoing theme throughout the story. At one point, Tom Sizemore's character explains how society can't manage another thousand years because every idea and experience has already been exhausted.

Finally, it seems significant, if only in a way I can't properly identify yet, that the climax of the movie takes place at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, which has been a topic of extensive commentary among architectural theorists as an emblem of postmodernism.

There's a lot going on beneath the surface in this movie.

Cutting himself off from the outside world to tend to a supercomputer he has built, a computer programmer becomes unsettled by the possibility of his invention turning evil here. The first half of the film is incredibly strong with lots of interesting conversations between machine and human, including the supercomputer's concern that its survival depends on the programmer's rationality and ability to stay sane. The second half of the film is less conversation-based and drags out for far too long after a certain reveal, but the whole thing is still enthralling and the black and white animation looks amazing.

18. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022) Episodes 5-6 (141 min.)

Took them 6 episodes to show the first two battles and they were mostly vanilla. This has to be the most expensive crap ever produced. There was a good song in it, though.

33. Spiderhead (2022)
I remember years ago reading the George Saunders short story this movie is based on, and I’m impressed that the screenwriters managed to extrapolate from it a feature length movie that offers a compelling narrative about scientific experimentation on prisoners. There’s a long and infamous history of such experimentation in the United States. Spiderhead is an emotionally rich movie about power imbalances, self-forgiveness, scientific ethics, and egotism. And there’s some irony in that because the experimentation in the narrative is with drugs specifically designed to alter emotions. Take one step further down the thematic pathway, and this is a movie about movies. I think of Hitchcock’s explanation that cinema gave him the tool to make audiences feel anything he wanted them to feel.
