With the World Cup and IFFR-prep interfering, I haven't watched as much as I wanted yet. This evening I saw the hugely dissapointing Dames and a while back the excellent Simenon adaptation. But I am most excited in this update about a REWATCH!! My 20th century is a movie I had long wanted to revisit and this challenge was a good oppurtunity for it, but what really drove me to it was a very exciting screening in EYE recently of the avant garde short https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/europa-1932/ that made my dive into the Themersons and movies about "the state of Europe"... I almost even rewatched Malmkrog too.

My 20th Century went up from a 2.5 stars on first watch to a full 4 out of 5 stars this time round. I still can agree with the notes I made on watching it that first time, but with different expectations all the dissapointment I felt then was absent this time. And then the beautiful images and the deceptively simple narrative that actually gives room for so many nuanced layers and a strong feministic perspective too, in a debut feature!, just has to be appreciated. I think I didn't quite see it for what it was at the time, but I do now, and might actually come to like it even more over time. Scanning the supplemental material on the Second Run release already helped me to get a better grip on it, and I still need to explore the director more...

#12 - Twilight (1990). 2/10. Maybe I was hyped by the description. Maybe the incredibly poor quality of the version I watched hindered my experience... but this was the most boring murder mystery I've ever seen.

I also was tremendously underwhelmed when I saw this a couple of years ago. For me, the Sean Penn & Jack Nicholson version remains the best adaptation of this story.

7 - When the Cat Comes (1963) - 7/10 - #573 - I thought this started out pretty well. A storyteller relates the story of the cat who wore glasses to the school children and then the cat makes an appearance and people become different colors depending on their mood and what they are like. After that, the story is kind of iffy, but the music and some of the antics are still fun plus the special effects.

8 - Krakatit (1948) - 7.5/10 - #895 - A doctor and nurse treat a man with delirium caused by meningitis. The man also has injuries to his hands. Much of the rest of the film details the man's memories as they slowly return to him. He is a chemist who invented a very powerful and dangerous explosive. In his delirium, he told a colleague about it and that could have repercussions. I got a bit tired of it toward the end, but overall a pretty good film.

8. RR (2007, James Benning)

Each shot in RR follows the same rule (more or less) of showing a landscape, a train entering and travelling through said landscape and then, leaving us with a few seconds of the landscape after the train has left the frame. The composition is generally strong and one shot in particular, showing a seemingly endless train travel through it towards a tunnel, only to reveal it again a top of the hill above, clearly having circled after the tunnel, is both relatively amusing and spellbinging. However, the film is far too repetitive and did not do enough to keep my attention, in fact, I was wondering why he thought this was in interesting project. There is some political company, and it does in a way create a picture of America and even consumerism (reading what fans are saying), but it was not enough to keep my attention from waning. 4/10

Released less than ten years after his impressive The Structure of Crystal, this is Krzysztof Zanussi film disappoints given that it similarly revolves around conversations between two diverse men. What made the earlier film so great was having equal time dedicated to conversations and dialogue-free scenes, whereas this effort is talk, talk, and more talk. The earlier film's gorgeous black and white imagery is missed too. Comparisons and contrasts aside though, this story is second-rate and the female characters lack dimension. That said, I'd never seen a summer camp for university students before watching this.

9. Diabel / The Devil (1972, Andrzej Zulawski)

As usual with Zulawski we get a chaotic energy filled with people just convulsing and acting in a grating and frustrating manner. I can respect that he has a unique directorial language/how he works with actors, but it tends to strike me as off-putting, and comical and silly in ways I don't think it was intended to be. 4/10

10. Ayneh / The Mirror (1997, Jafar Panahi)

The concept behind The Mirror is simply ingenious, and I do not want to spoil it, but let's just say it elevates what is otherwise a rather grating film quite well. 6/10

From these three I liked Requiem the best, very close to an 8th. Both production design and acting are outstanding and help to make the story believable and relatable. It is just that the story didn't move me much beyond just what it is... the mother-daughter relation became somewhat more interesting later on in the movie... but for now it got stuck at 4-stars with a 7.5 on a scale out of 10.

Shooting stars also got stuck, mainly because I found the story telling a bit too clunky (with many unbelievable and plot-convenient passages). To have such an early depiction of a behind-the-scenes on a movie set is cool and there are two scenes that I might describe as impressionistic that really add a bit of class to this one

The Maggie is allright but it had me often more annoyed than amused at everything that happens in it. Especially the crew of the boat are a bunch of c@nts... while I think I am supposed to find them endearing...

Well, I liked this more than I expected I would. Which is to say that I expected to hate it, but merely disliked it. It's a bio-drama of the life of Saint Therese. It's really boring - it captures the utter boringness of being a nun well, but it's boring. And very religious. There was a time in my life where I would have been moved by the religious devotion, but that time has long since passed, and I find it pointless. The direction elevates this with the use of short vignettes, which works better at the start of the film when they're shorter. But it helped with my ranking on the Cesar list, so there's that.

Various bits of footage are spliced together with truncated conversations and musings about art and reality in this ambitious experimental feature. There are some amazing visuals in the mix, including snow falling backwards. The at-times rapid-fire editing is pretty nifty too, even if some of the images (the camera hovering over one guy's rear end) are hard to find purpose in. Indeed, interpreting the film after a single viewing is no easy task with all of the dialogue and musings oddly cut short, sometimes interrupted mid-sentence. The general theme seems to be the role that art and film plays in perception.

And I've now seen everything under 70 minutes on the official list.

With a very dialogue-heavy general approach though, it is bit hard to feel for the big stir that this caused when released half a century ago. It is generally entertaining however while it lasts.

The film also carries some ambiguity for the most part with a suggestion that the killer merely thinks he is a vampire. With a very dialogue-heavy general approach though, it is bit hard to feel for the big stir that this caused when released half a century ago. It is generally entertaining however while it lasts.

There's a second movie called The Night Strangler and then a 20 episode tv series as well. They might be worth checking out since you sort of liked the first film. The tv series is held in a bit more regard than the movies.

I first got into Kolchak through a series of comic books published sporadically from around 2002-2016.

I was having a conversation with a buddy a month ago, and for some reason I don't remember I mentioned Kojak, the TV series starring Telly Savalas. And he said, "You mean Kolchak." And I said, "No, I mean Kojak." And he said, "You're pronouncing it wrong." And I said, "Are you talking about the cop show or the vampire show?"

It turned out he had never heard of Kojak and made the reasonable assumption that if I was speaking about TV from the 1970s, I must have meant Kolchak. But that led us to a bigger question: How did American TV get to the point that unrelated series named Kojak and Kolchak were running at the same time? I know Kojak came before Kolchak, the series. But Kolchak, the character, appeared in The Night Stalker, the TV movie, a year before Kojak showed up. I'm just surprised that TV executives didn't change the name of one or the other series, the way a movie will sometimes get a name change during production if it learns about another movie in production with the same name or a similar name.

@gunnar @blocho - thanks for the replies; yes, I'm aware of the Unofficial List second film and TV series, and funnily enough I had somehow got into my own head that The Night Stalker was meant to be *Kojak* pilot. You can imagine my surprise when I paused the movie and double checked what was going on after realising that Telly Savalas was not the lead actor.

7. The Devil (1972)

“These are the voguish patriotic dances on the grave of an independent homeland.”



A slightly phantasmagoric journey through Poland at the time of the Third Partition. It has that Zulawski touch where the camera is constantly shaky, the characters and their choices make little sense, and people seem to always be writhing and screaming. This is very much not my taste.

9 - Birds, Orphans and Fools (1969) - 5/10 - #518 - Three adults (two men and a woman live together in a city affected by war. They act like fools or children much of the time. There were some interesting bits here and there, but I didn't really enjoy their antics or the film itself.

10 - Miracles of Thursday (1957) - 8/10 - #828 - A group of prominent citizens in a small Spanish town that has seen tourism and other visitors decline over the years come up with a scheme to fake an appearance by their patron saint, San Dimas, in order to improve business in town. Their scheme has some minor success, but really gets rolling when a stranger (Richard Basehart) who seems to know all that they have been up to arrives in town.

11 - Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea (1977) - 8.5/10 - #232 - Jan is a fairly boring, but successful rocket designer who lives in an apartment with his twin brother Karel, a womanizer who pilots rocket ships which carry tourists on sightseeing tours to the past. When Karel died while eating breakfast, Jan impersonates him and gets caught up in a Nazi time travel conspiracy. The film is pretty funny at times and I thought it was also very entertaining.

12 - Who Wants to Kill Jessie? (1966) - 6.5/10 - #432 - A new invention is able to project dreams onto a tv screen. However, it accidentally brings some of those characters to life. I thought it was funny how they spoke using word balloons, but that got a bit old after a while. I liked the last 15-20 minutes or so the best.

Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter - The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick (Wim Wenders, 1972) 6/10 ... #851 ... read the novel a few years ago and recall liking it more than the film, although you can see the beginnings of Wenders' brooding road movie style that was later used to much better effect in films like Alice in the Cities, Paris Texas and Until the End of the World
13. Peterloo (Mike Leigh, 2018) 7.5/10 ... #704 ... very interesting exploration of a historical event and movement I'd heard of but knew very little about, for me this is one of Leigh's best films

I'm glad that someone out there agrees with me on the greatness of this movie. It's woefully underappreciated.
