ICMF-FF6: Jury Invitation

#1

Post by beavis »

The 6th edition of our forum's Festival is almost here! I hope most of you know by now what it is about and how it works. The festival highlights great movies that have somehow slipped under the radar, this time from the 2019 - 2021 window. The festival is divided up in sections that focus on topics that are regularly overlooked by the mainstream, but at the heart there is always the "Main Slate", that should contain the best of the fest.

From the very start of the year our programmers have been searching out movies and watching each others nominations. St. Gloede, Fergenaprido, filmbantha, zzzorf along with new additions to the team: Onderhond and Sol and myself were again unstoppable. We feel certain that we have a very strong selection coming up this year. But first comes that time we call in the jury!

this thread is an open invite to anyone who wants to be on the official festival jury this year

Before the programmers make their final choices from well over a hundred movies that passed our collective judgement, we invite all people who want to participate in the festival and can commit to watching (at least) the Main Slate of 10 movies + one other section of 4 movies, to sign up to the jury. In return for this commitment you can choose amongst you from the 37 movies that we have rated most highly what movies will end up on that Main Slate.

There is again a movie we want to single out for our "center piece' spot to give it the full attention of everybody, which is the bold conversation piece Caught in the Net. So that leaves 9 spaces for the jury to fill

What does a juror do?

- An official juror commits to watching the Main Slate, and at least one other section
- They have a say in creating the Main Slate from the below list of titles that are the very best from what the programmers have found
- They have the month of October to sign up as a juror in this thread and decide together on the 9 slots to fill
- This can be by discussion, voting or otherwise. Selections can be made on how much you liked what you already saw, how much you'd like to see a movie, or other criteria of your choosing: make the Slate as attractive as possible for all participants.
- During the festival they watch and discuss movies along with everybody else, although they could also work ahead a bit if they want before the festival has started
- After the festival they present their winners of the mainslate and each section, with as much or as little fanfare as they choose (but a small jury report would be a fun thing to add?).

NB.
- We have established as a rule over time that any casual participant who enjoys the festival and has watched a complete section automatically becomes an unofficial juror on that section.
- There are 10 separate sections next to the Main Slate, each containing 4 films. They are Animation, Arthouse, Asia, Africa, Latin America, English Language Independant, LGBTQ, Documentary, "Just Before Dawn" and Europe. The format of 4 movies per slate remains the most inviting we think, even if we found a lot more candidates for some of the slates this time. Now this will just give us more room to select only the best of the best of what we found.

The festival will be held over the period of a four weeks from Monday 14 November until Monday 12 December

So the window between the end of October and the beginning of the festival isn't that big. Please take your time and it is not to late to sign up even if you are reading this only for the first time while October is already well underway... but... the sooner there is a consensus on the mainslate from the jurors, the sooner the programmers can fill in the other sections and full promoting of the festival can get underway, so don't feel obliged to wait until the entire month has gone ;) I will be keeping an eye on this thread, and if voting on the movies for the Slate is happening in another way or another place, I hope to get notified when there is a final selection made.

In my next post I'll present a list of 37 titles we created for the jurors to select their preferred and ideal festival Main Slate from.

We hope you're already as excited for the festival as we have been making our selections
Please join along by signing up as a juror
and mark the festival dates on your calendars!!

I am proposing to use this shared spreadsheet to tally our votes as per same principles as last year:

For every film, enter corresponding letter to your interest:

High (H): 4 points (Max: 7 picks)
Medium (M): 2 points (Max: 10 picks)
Low (L): 1 point (Max: 10 picks)
None (leave blank): 0 point (No Max)

The nine films with most points qualify, ties are resolved with highest number of High votes (then M votes, etc).

I could probably be a juror. I think I ended up watching all of the main slate and a bunch of the other sections the last couple years anyway.

Great to see a new face in the Jury, especially a prominent face around the forum.

I have added you both to the spreadsheet so you can add your scores in whenever you are ready.

Good to see at least some new blood!

This "duty" is fairly easy, but when there are only a few, it can become more difficult to cover all sections (as we saw last year)... so I would again like to recommend any member who is thinking of watching the festivals films to join along at this stage already, makes it a bit smoother sailing for everybody!

zzzorf, does editing the spreadsheet mean you are also onboard as a juror?

No as us programmers can't be Jurors by theory, I will watch all the movies like I did last year and vote in the Audience award and such but yeah can't do both jobs to be fair. Was just helping them out keeping the ball moving.

flavo5000, pitch and I have our votes in already !

I am sure there will be more jurors/viewers when the festival comes; probably that posters dont want to bother with the main section selection process.

We can also ask previous jurors: teproc, zuma, outdoorcats.

We had 6 jurors signing up ahead of time in the 2021 and 2020 editions, and I think they were our most busy to date, so we can indeed be pretty certain more people will jump in once the threads are up - but it would still be best to get back up to 6 (or above).

Past jurors (who signed up ahead of time - based on a quick check of the Jury threads of ICMFFF2-5):

teproc 2021, 2020
zuma 2021
outdoorcats 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018
Melvelet 2020
MatthewScott 2020
xianjiro 2019 (also past programmer)
RogerTheMovieManiac88 2019, 2018
Lonewolf2003 2018
Carmel1379 2018
Perception de Ambiguity 2018 (also past programmer)
Ivan0716 2018 (also past programmer)
Cynical Cinephile 2018
zissou14 2018
flaiky 2018 (no longer on the forum sadly)

In terms of pass programmers (who could be interested in doing the other side):

xianjiro
Kingink
sacmersault
maxwelldeux
Perception de Ambiguity
Ivan071
AB537
Maxwell
PGonzales

We could also have a look at who actively participated last year, as well as check in with the most active people in the challenges + newer users.

Just bumping to see if we can pick up more jury members, while we can work with the little amount we have a couple more would make a big difference. Maybe some friendly messages to previous participants/new potentials may give us some more?

There is a good chance I have scored us another Juror. David is new to the forum but I have known him for a few years in the Facebook group dedicated to Flickchart and would be a perfect fit here. If he decides to do it after looking over the movies he should be signing up later today.

Hello, I am posting to introduce myself and announce my intention to be a juror! I am here at the invitation of zzzorf, a friend from elsewhere on the movie internet, and from whom I have received many wonderful movie recommendations that he found via ICM. One that became a Top 50 all-timer for me a couple of years ago was 1988's Camp de Thiaroye.

I am also the author of Akira Kurosawa and Modern Japan, which has been getting good reviews since it came out this past April.

For the last 7 years I've covered the SXSW Film Festival in a critic capacity, as well as some other Austin-area festivals like the Austin Asian-American Film Festival (my personal favorite). This feels like an exciting next step in my festival journey.

I mostly work from home and am the primary caregiver of two toddlers, but I think I can do what's required of a juror. Even during this busy season of my life I average almost a movie a day, so it's just a matter of putting my other watch projects on hold.

Nice to be here!

I'd say just go for it and see how far you get. Hopefully you'll get inspired by everyone participating (and the great selection of movies of course) and it'll be a joy instead of a challenge.

OK just wondering when we are looking at calling the main slate finished. Last year the slate was fully decided a few days back. There is still a possibility another Juror joins but the sooner we programmers get the final list the sooner we get sort out the minor slates and get all the information back to the jury. I have been following the scores and the last few jury members (gunnar and David) haven't changed the chosen 9 movies, just the order they were selected.

Hey David -- Welcome to the forum. It's nice to have a historian here.

Let’s wait for this Sunday and see if anyone else is volunteering by then - so the deadline is clear. Programmers can already work quite a bit on the preliminary results anyway.

Surprising myself, I actually think I do have time to do this, this year. I have quite a lot of holiday days I can take from work. Volunteer here!

The only one of the selection of films that I've seen is Mad God. Mad God is an extraordinarily good film in my view. These are 10 I would pick for the main slate.

Mad God
Loony Porn I would like to see in the main slate, I can access this easily and it looks interesting.
Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes as well, Adam Torel seemed to be pretty keen on it in your podcast.
Matthias & Maxime. Have read good thing's about Dolan's latest
Papicha. This looks quite defiant, I like the sound of it.
Straight up. Trailer looks beautiful, and also got a laugh out of me. Feeling very good vibes.
La Traversée. I looked at the stills and I liked the animation style.
The Long Walk. Looks like a lot is going on in this one.
Two of Us. Looks warm.
Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy. Looks a bit obvious for our film festival, but I haven't seen it, and looks like an important production.

It will be great to have another Juror. Don't forget to put your votes into the spreadsheet.
